INSIDE OUT 2 Got Two Emotions WRONG...

  • Inside Out 2 introduces two new emotions, Envy and Ennui, who don't exactly match their names but still fit well into Riley's emotional landscape. Envy, despite her name, embodies admiration rather than resentment, particularly towards popular hockey player Val Ortiz. Ennui, representing boredom, spends most of her time lounging and operating the console through her phone. However, she exhibits more sarcasm than boredom when controlling Riley. Despite these discrepancies, both emotions still fit well within the movie's narrative. As Riley navigates puberty, she experiences complex emotions, often intertwined. Envy and Ennui's interactions with Anxiety show different aspects of Riley's struggle, with Anxiety driving her forward despite Envy and Ennui's influence potentially leading her to isolate herself. Despite their names not perfectly matching their roles, Envy and Ennui add depth to Inside Out 2's portrayal of Riley's emotional journey through puberty.

Envy and jealousy are distinct feelings/emotions. While jealousy is usually described as a protective feeling towards a perceived relationship that you fear it might be threatned by a third party, envy is a agressive feeling often described as pain at the good fortune of others, going as far as to wish they would lose what they have even if it doesnt benefit you at all

Well I'd like to think all the emotions has a negative and a positive
Envy has an obvious negative that we all know it for but it does share positives
      For example
Someone who envies people with strong builds will either A pout about it and let their admiration turn negative or B use that envy as motivation to get better ( and I've seen both sides)
This is even shown with each emotion in inside out
Joy, makes you happy obviouse positive but also as shown trying to push out other emotions to be happy all the time is bad so negitive
Fear, obvious negative it can make you paranoid and overly cautious but on the good side fear and caution has saved plenty of people from dangerous situations
Sadness, obvious negative and an obvious positive sometimes you have to cry to truly get it all out but also being overly sensitive and letting everything hurt you does more harm than good
      So on and so on
I'm just saying that just because the media portrays something as negative or only really shows the negative sides to things doesn't make it all negative

@@B.O.Xproject I see envy as the difference between admiration and covetedness. (Bear with me).
I had finished some Christmas shopping, and stopped at a restaurant for dinner. A place famous for their onion rings (extra thick cut, double batter dipped, flash fried (the good stuff)). A family with two boys were seated in the booth across from me. And the older boy ordered rings as an appetizer. When they came, and his brother saw them, he started fussing, demanding to have the rings. In an effort to placate him, the parents asked the elder brother to give his rings, and they would get him another order. He reluctantly agreed, and little brother was soon munching on onion rings (and making a production of it). He was laughing and carrying on, until the waitress came with big brother's second order of rings. Suddenly he stops laughing and stares at the new order. Guess what happens next. Yep, the little brat actually stood up in the booth, and ignoring the rings still on his plate, reached across the table to grab more of his brother's rings. *That* is envy and coveting. It wasn't just that he wanted rings. He wanted his *brother's* rings. Just because of who had them.

      I see your point
But my point isn't that envy isn't bad envy can be bad my point is that not everyone who displays envy is being negative
Envy and admiration are different but they also come hand in hand for most young people
Most people can turn their envy into admiration or motivate and that would make their envy more positive but that doesn't take out the extreme negative that your saying ( though I would say that the brother getting his food taken would be more envious of his brother taking it his brother is just spoiled and doesn't have a basic understanding of what "you can't have that" means)
The point is the emotions are complicated
All emotions can have a good or a positive depending on how the person chooses to act on it and to just label something as all bad or good is the fundamentally wrong
Like anxiety ( kinda spoiler if you haven't want the movieeeeee)
Anxiety has its obvious negatives but they are exploded by the end of the movie because that would give the notion that "if you feel anxiety you have to get rid of it" but that's not the point
Mostly Everyone feels these emotions and sometimes its better to learn how to think positively about it ( like turning your envy into admiration) rather than just putting it in a box of good and bad

The way I interpreted it is that all emotions have a good and bad side, and it’s up to them to figure out what their good and bad side is.
Joy‘s bad side is avoidance or selfishness, she can make Riley ignore important things or lots focus on things that really matter, and Riley can’t see things in another way.
Anger, Fear and Disgust bad side is being perceived as negative, but their good side is to protect Riley or defend herself from threats be them emotional or physical. I believe embarrassment falls here too as he can limit Riley’s actions.
Envy’s good side is admiration and ambition, and her bad side is greed.
Anxiety as we saw in the ending of movie 2 also has a good side and that is to help Riley prepare for future important events that she CAN control. (While the bad side is worrying of things she can’t control).
Now Ennui was a really tricky one for me, she didn’t really exhibit a good side through the movie, all she did was help Riley to pretend through sarcasm, but if you try to analyze it from a different perspective we could say Ennui helps Riley relax and less tense to deal with situations, as we saw when she was talking with the older girls, Ennui took over Anxiety and helped Riley relax to interact without having to create lots of excuses or lie.
If we could separate them through roles I’d do
Joy & Ennui are mood controllers
Anger, Disgust and Fear provide protection
Sadness and Embarrassment are behavior/physiological limiters and bring reflection (and I say this because sadness was what stopped Riley from running away in the first movie and stealing the coach’s book in the second)
Anxiety and Envy control Riley’s ambitions

I think it's the idea that one emotion changes based on the consequence of their nature. When you're new to the sense of envy, you either admire something long enough for it to become an "obsession" for something you don't have or not. For ennui, sarcasm is pretty much driven by extensive amounts of boredom, like as in you can't be entertained by regular conversation that you feel more entertained when trying to trigger a reaction from others.
The more bored you are, the more tempted you become to do something that seems simple such as mockery, sarcasm, etc.

  • @GiratinaofFury

I was thinking of how each emotion could function both positively and negatively - Envy can be aspiration, but also be jealousy, whilst Ennui can be discretion, but also apathy. I mean, there's a scene where Envy and Anxiety argue over how Riley should move her arms whilst she walks, and Ennui just ends it by saying "We've got pockets". And in that moment, Ennui shows the positive aspect of herself - being able to silence a discussion when it's not worth having and taking the approach least likely to aggravate.

So the writers decided to use psychology terms here, Ennui causing her to be sarcastic is a more general representation of disinterest, in this case, insincerity. When you don't care how you're perceived, you might make a comment that's too rude, too sarcastic, too vulgar and then feel ashamed for it later when you realize how it came off. With envy, it's not the malicious desire to take, but rather the motivating factor in contrast to disgust that attempts to draw us towards the things we find attractive that we either do not have or cannot have. In purely medical terms "envy" is actually a big motivating factor in romance, but it can be embarrassing if we let that kind of motive overstep. Embarrassment was really well written here because he's inherently at odds with the other new emotions. By design our psychological system uses shame or "embarrassment" to stop these other negative behaviors.

Well, that featurette you used in your previous videos had the bedroom scene. So, first things first, on the left corner, there is an origami pizza planet truck. (Even though you configured that in one of your vids) I love how Pixar keeps using this tradition in older movies. Such as Toy Story, and Cars. Now, we are going bunk by bunk of all 5 emotions Sleeping. First, Fear’s bed has a guardrail to keep him from falling, even though he is in the bottom bunk, and has an array of night lights, and sleeps cozy with his teddy bear. Next, Disgust sleeps with her sleep mask, and her hair net to keep her hair good when she gets up. Thirdly, Anger’s bed is the most interesting one. He has a cinder block as a pillow, a fire resistant blanket, a fire sprinkler overhead, a speed bag for boxing, a bat beside him, and punches angrily in his sleep. Fourthly, Sadness whimpers in her sleep, but she also Yawns in her sleep as well, Finally, Joy is the one who is snoring, and she giggles in her sleep. Her bunk is decorated like Riley’s bedroom, and has an origami figure of Bing Bong.

  • @wingdingfontbro

Envy isn’t just negative. You can be envious of something or someone but that doesn’t mean you want to take what’s theirs or ruin it. You can be like “wow my cousin’s wedding party was amazing I want mine to be like that” and then you make your grand and amazing based off of that envy in the form of admiration. Not every emotion has to strictly be itself, we saw that with joy in the movie when anger was calling her delusional and she had a breakdown, we also saw it when joy found Riley’s sense of self, only to have Riley’s new sense of self based off of anxiety echo through Riley’s mind. Ennui also fit in the narrative, while she didn’t do much it’s hard to have a character that literally represents boredom have an incredibly active role. And with the sarcasm, again the emotions are not limited to acting as themselves and several times in the movie through the 5 prior core emotions they are shown to feel other emotions.

The emotions we see don't have to be the literal embodiment of the emotions they represent in real life, rather they're just the ones who make the person feel the appropriate emotions via the main control panel.
In other words they're more responsible for giving their human some emotions, than they have to feel this all the time. They're characters. They're meant to be like us. It would be difficult to push the story forward if they're simply one dimensional or acting by the emotions they represent alone.
Thats why anxiety doesn't have to be the literal feeling of anxiety, joy doesn't have to happy all of the time, or fear doesn't have to be paranoid or something like that. Anxiety is portrayed as an excited and like a person who works all the time, joy is portrayed as a team motivator archetype and fear is portrayed to be a funny person. They evolve just like other character in other stories. Envy feels admiration, but that shouldn't mean the person they control should consequently feel admiration too. The person could feel what the controller is assigned to give, envy. It only makes sense for the person to feel envy because the character controlling feels admiration.
The key here is that this is a story about the emotions themselves. Its like a story about the goals of the chracters giving this emotions; how will this emotions act if they are people?
How will each of them fulfill "the goal of an emotion" than they themselves are the literal personification of it.

I never understand why people mix up envy with jealousy, they are the same in situation but the opposite in reason or emotion.
Jealousy is frustration, fear, or anger due to someone else having something that you don't have.
It's "I'm angry my life isn't like yours." Or "I'm afraid you're gonna take this one thing out of my life"
    Vs.
"I wish my life was like yours!" Or "I'm so in awe, I want what you have!" Envy stems from more positive emotions towards the desire to have something or someone else's life while jealousy is the negative perspective of it.

Actually, envy and ennui names match a lot because envy shows jealousy by admiration and lots of times when you’re bored you’re sarcastic.

Envy could be either resentment or admiration. Either way you feel jealous and wish you had what others had. Resentment is when you do anything in your power to get what you don't have.

Also this guy: Ennui spent his time the most by controlling the consol using his phone and etc, rather than boredom

You have to admire something before you envy it. For example if someone has a better car than you, you have to admire the person’s car and then desire to have a care like that resulting in being envious of someone else having a car you wish you had

In the movie when ENNUI takes over by talking with SARCASM it’s implying that she’s bored 🥱 when talking about the musical band. Envy on the other hand was completely missed characterized, because ENVY is resentment or hatred towards someone else’s success.
