Riley's panic attack actually made me tear up because it was so realistic to me. Seeing Riley in a state like that made me relate - as a 16 year old who struggles with bad anxiety, that film had me on a emotional roller coaster fr.
Right? Like I went from laughing to cringing from embarrassment, to worried asf, to sobbing. Her inner thoughts and how she embodies the emotions is so powerful and relatable. Realising that her anxiety attack didn't stop until she embraced not only that she was a good person, but so much more, made me wanna cry.
The best part about The Last Wish's panic attack is that it's all done without words. No cliché comments, no stupid jokes. Just a friend comforting a friend in their time of need.
Glad someone finally pointed out the whole “MARIO HAD A PANIC ATTACK” charade. Like yeah, he’s definitely shook up from being smack around by a MAN-SIZED Godzilla, but I wouldn’t say his reaction is all that indicative of a panic attack, more so a quick breather/self-reflection before getting back up again.
Also looking at your other vids, it would seem as though you are VERY underrated. While I can’t completely remedy that immediately, have a sub for your troubles, and I’m looking forward to what comes next! 🤘
Yeah not every distressful experience leads to a panic ir anxiety attack, Mario seemed to be trying to breath through the pain and recover from initial shock and rush of adrenaline before getting up for round two.
I dunno why, but I thought that if Mario did have one, I’d thought he’d drink his worries away, try to fight bowser drunk, and then bowser just incinerates him. (I watched the movie, I know how the film goes.)
Another thing about Riley’s panic attack I noticed while watching Inside Out 2 was that she was using grounding techniques such as feeling the bench she was sitting on and feeling the rays of sun on her face
I don't want to be mean when I say it but it's true, puss in boots LW did it first and did it best; everyone else (even if it was from a good place) capitalized on it (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery). Like the original creator of this video didn't even go into the tinitis aspect, when you can't hear, when you memory and cognition literally sever and your body hard shifts into pure survival. How you literally can't see or see through someone trying to help you as the 5 F's Take over. (Fight, flight, freeze, fawn/feign, faint)
@@kaiyote7924this is just so incorrect. The creator of this video really built it to follow his preference as opposed to reality and objectivity. Just like the animation style and a lot of aspects of that movie while The Last Wish may be a really good movie, a lot of it is so clearly a copy of the original Spiderverse movie that had just won countless awards just a few years before. Spiderverse really was the movie to start this new wave of animation like the Mario movie and The Last Wish. The first Puss and Boots movie is proof of this. The first Puss and Boots movie is good but nothing special and certainly not like The Last Wish at all and that’s because Puss and Boot’s and Dreamwork’s history and past isn’t where people who worked on The Last Wish got their ideas from. Spiderverse and inside out were also without a doubt the first big popular kids animation media to show feelings of panic and anxiety, it certainly was not Puss in Boots. Even from a more mature older as opposed to teen led movie prospective it isn’t Puss and Boots, it’s Bojack Horseman. Like “I’m sorry” but what you just claimed is completely wrong and is a great example of how false news spreads and can be disproved with simple google searches. The Last Wish only came out in 2022. SpiderVerse came out in 2018, Inside out 1 came out in 2015, and Bojack horseman came out in 2014. 10 years ago. And I’m willing to bet there’s animation from way longer ago that also portrayed panic attacks, but again the creator of the video didn’t want to make a non bias, objective, video essay about panic attacks in animation. What he really wanted to do was to show off his favorites and speak about them as if they were facts.
@@cacti4324 ummmmm, not to be rude but (aside from the presenting them as facts thing because that doesn’t happen) the video is based from the creators opinion, as it would be a much larger feat than a UA-cam video to scientifically rank panic attack scenes. Also no idea what the tangent about last wish being apparently unoriginal has to do with the scene? He’s ranking those scenes specifically. Tbh, as someone who suffers from extremely bad panic attacks so much so that I am on medication to lessen their effect, the top two scenes are both tied for me as they each represent a different kind of panic attack. The last wish was what I like to call a ‘survivalist’ panic attack, when you can only think to run from the perceived danger until you get somewhere safe. Inside out 2 was a ‘frozen’ panic attack, when you can’t really move from where you are and just try your best to calm down, it’s a quieter form of panic which mostly just leaves you shaken and exhausted. Also it’s from inside out 2 not 1. Easy mistake to make though. Also, it’s a UA-cam video dude you can’t expect it to be the most well researched, thorough analysis possible. While there is analysis of the scenes and such, the main purpose is to be informative and funny. I understand wanting it to be completely objective but that simply isn’t possible currently. Finally, the commenter made a good point about the tinitis and your body basically auto piloting to a place it feels safe because that has happened to me before on many occasions. I literally remember getting on a bus to go back home from school (sixth form so I wasn’t in major trouble for this) while having a panic attack, my brain was just completely overwhelmed and I just couldn’t do anything but my body went into full survival instinct and made a beeline back home. I do agree that the original comment did make a kinda dumb point about the last wish ‘doing it first’ and ‘everyone else copying it’, you were right to criticise that. The problem is with the weird tangent and then the sudden critique of how many scenes were in the ranking, even though that doesn’t really matter that much because it’s just one video. Criticise the dumb comment, not the entire video. Sorry if I come across as rude or anything, not trying to be just voicing my opinion on the matter. Anyway, have a great day :)
I was thinking the same! Arcane portrays anxiety and panic so well. (My immediate thought was the scene where Powder has her breakdown in episode 3. It's so intense and really really shakes you to the core.)
Jinx has more of a schizophrenia+BPD+PTSD type thing. Its very stressful on her, but its not the typical "panic attack". Shes having major delusions and is hallucinating, which isnt a typical symptom of a panic attack. Not ever "Im very stressed and not in a good mental place right now" thing is automatically a panic disorder. Since there are so many other traumas and mental illnesses mixed in, its not gonna reflect how a standard panic attack works in your average otherwise mentally healthy person. Like her breakdown in Ep 3 and subsequent issues regarding feeling "left out" or like shes getting replaced is pretty clearly a symptom of her BPD and the PTSD from the trauma of her being left by Vi. Her schizophrenia pokes out in the visual and auditory delusions and her paranoia. Obviously panic attacks are a pretty common symptom of PTSD and other mental issues, but shes just a cocktail of mental disorders so its probably above our paygrade to rank her in accuracy. The show does treat the issues very well though and from what ive heard from real therapists its pretty accurate.
one more thing to add about the last wish, you'd think because of perrito asking puss to rub his stomach it would be played for laughs, but it is played so serious and used actual science of a dog's heartbeat having a calming effect.
I'd also like to add that Perrito doesn't say, "Wow! I guess I really am a therapy dog, huh?!" or something like that. They just let the moment sit, and don't have a lame joke or something.
It's also nice that Perrito is specifically doing DPT (deep pressure therapy) for Puss! And he's the perfect size for it! Perrito is a small dog, so he wouldn't be able to do it for a human, but since Puss is a cat and they're closer in size, it works!
@Based_Gigachad_001 Dogs, and even cats, have actually been scientifically proven to help reduce and relieve stress and anxiety! Merely petting a dog decreases stress hormones like cortisol and increase hormones that help you feel relief and happiness. Admittedly I’m not quite sure specifically about the science of a dog’s heartbeat helping, but it would make sense, seeing as it provides a steady rhythm to focus on and ground oneself while also providing physical contact by being close enough to the dog’s chest to listen. It’s fascinating how pets can help us with our mental and physical health, I highly recommend looking into it!
What makes Riley's panic attack so well done is how the duality of the movie's perspective helps to enhance it. Because we get to see both the outside and inside of this panic attack, the exterior Riley can show the symptoms while not needing the world around her to show what is going on. The inside of her mind becoming such a warzone does PLENTY to show us just how chaotic a person's mind becomes when an anxiety attack strikes.
The fact that the panic attack scene in Velma ranked lower than something that wasn’t even a panic attack in this really goes to show how bad Velma was.
I saw a youtube comment once that says that apparently scrappy doo kills velma, obviously I can't fact check it, but if it is true then that's at least one good thing.
@@metal_pipe9764saw a review done by I think Saberspark, can verify she does get killed off by scrappy and becomes a ghost but there’s an end credits scene that alludes to a 3rd and hopefully final season (if not cancelled) because of the mention of bringing her back alive on Halloween
They cannot renew the show, because if they don't then Velma gets canonically dragged to Hell, and that would be one of the funniest things in TV history

Puss’s panic attack in the last wish was so realistic it completely caught me off guard, literally had me crying in the theatre. I still cry every time I see that clip because it’s so gut wrenchingly accurate - I respect them so much for giving such a goofy character such serious character exploration
When Steven goes through his traumatic flashbacks he only gets through the first season before the sequence moves on. He still had 4 more seasons and a movie to think about in that panic attack
People often confuse the Mario scene for being a depiction of a panic attack. And while I understand the confusion, he’s just scared. And him being extremely afraid only lasts for like, 15 seconds. When did this comment get 1.9k likes???
@@adzdrawss Omg yeah I see so many people confusing the 2 all the time. Hyperventilating is much more severe and isn't just caused by injury, physical activity etc... you literally CANNOT BREATHE.
I loved the way inside out portrayed anxiety and panic attacks. As someone who suffers from severe anxiety the way they showed inside (anxiety losing control, rapidly and blindly slamming buttons, the storm blowing everyone back) vs the outside (Riley staring off into space, taping her foot/fidgeting, and hyperventilating) was incredibly accurate in my opinion. Also the fact that the solution wasn’t just to “be happy” and let joy take over, but to accept her flaws and admit that she needs help sometimes.
That duality was immaculate. I knew that a movie with a format like this would benefit from being able to show what an anxiety attack looms like externally as well as what it FEELS like.
Well, Mario being slapped around by a firebreathing turtle-dragon before taking a moment to calm his nerves ranks higher on the list than Velma, so that shows the quality of the writing.
You should have also mentioned the second time Hunter was having a panic attack with Gus. Hunter was spiraling in circles showing that he's still messed up his trip in Belos' mind. Gus immediately proceeded to calm him down utilizing a breathing trick Willow taught him. And after he's calmed down continues to be gentle and patient with him knowing that he's under a lot of stress and is not ready to open up to him. Also bonus negative points at Velma for treating all of her panic attacks as a running gag in season 1.
@@shoopydoopya panic attack that always shook me up was the Basil Fight near the end of omori. Spoilers below Sunny and Basil got into trouble where sunny accidentally killed Mari. He has a panic attack in the bathroom and tries to end his own life. Eventually after confrontation sunny tries to prevent Basil from harming himself by getting the knife away from Basil, but he lashes out and cuts Sunny’s eye. A lot of animations recently seem to be having characters going through panic attacks and mental health issues. And that’s a good thing. It shows the viewers that they’re not alone and that it’s okay. It makes the shows/movies more relatable and makes you feel bad for the victims. And it makes sense that a movie about emotions would have a character going through one, especially one with Anxiety in it.
As a person who has panic attacks, i do agree with the way Puss in Boots handled it. They gave him someone who would listen and let him know everything would be okay. One of the main things to do it to just listen to the person and show that your there for them, and the creators nailed it!
I haven’t seen the movie but I had to look up that scene after hearing about it. Man they nailed it. It brought me back to some time when I went through something similar, and I think it also involved a therapy dog. Not sure what time it brought me back to, but a time nonetheless.
Just watching the silent snippet in the beginning of Riley having a panic attack was enough to elevate my heart rate and make me tear up, such a realistic scene and one that I've experienced at all the lowest points in my life
I also adore what was mentioned in the video: Anxiety just becoming a whirlwind around the console while simultaneously frozen. When you have a moment like this, you FEEL like everything around you is simultaneously going way too fast and like the moment is frozen forever.
@@plaidhatter1674 god right?? that visual is so burned into my brain. It's so real and accurate. And Anxiety herself in that moment--she doesn't want to cause Riley to suffer, she wants to keep Riley safe and give her a good future, but everything she's done is destroying Riley and she's so desperate to regain control but is only making it worse. The characterization of anxiety as controlling but not ill-intentioned and being, herself, terrified in the midst of a panic attack was just so on-point. Joy struggling to get through to her had me tearing up in the theater.

This may not be a new find to those who watched Inside Out 2, but I really liked it, is that when we see Anxiety's little tornado, we can't see the monitor on what Riley sees. Riley's mind is literally clouded and not even the other emotions can see what's happening

hunter's panic attack is one of the reasons why the owl house is one of my favourite shows. as someone with an anxiety disorder, i can in fact say that it is extremely accurate and overall just a nice little touch of angst to the show :)
Yep. Despite being called adult shows, they can be surprisingly immature sometimes. And we instead get high quality storytelling from “kids” movies and tv shows
i specially think puss in boots handled it so well because when i watched it with my little cousins (10 n 11), they didn't need to know what a panic attack was to know and understand that puss was struggling to keep himself grounded and work through his thoughts. they did a perfect depiction that all audiences could understand and appreciate
And to think that they removed Scooby from the show because they thought having a talking dog would be too “kiddie” and yet the kid’s movie with talking cats, talking dogs, talking wolfs, talking bears, and talking crickets was infinitely more mature.
All of Hunters panic attacks were really well depicted. His va did so good too. His felt so realistic I could feel my own anxiety rising. Definitely deserves a higher spot imo

one of my favorite media panic attacks is from my little pony, in which starlight is being told that she has to meet up with a childhood friend after trauma related to said friend caused her to freak out and do some things she sincerely regrets and is ashamed of. she starts staring blankly into the middle distance and the words of her mentor fade out as a dial tone fades in slowly. it suddenly cuts as twilight gets her attention again, but me and my twin saw the dial tone as such a realistic way to show the feeling on the inside. its not the most realistic one, but it was a clever use of sound to represent something like that
I really do love how the depicted what Anxiety would be doing during a panic attack. It accurately shows that everything is becoming overwhelming, and anxiety is moving at sonic speeds. Amazing how they showed that on both the outside and inside.
I never knew what it felt like with a panic attack until recently when I had my very first one before going on a trip. It felt like a nightmare but I eventually calmed myself down! Glad media is making stuff like this more understandable! 😁

Mario recovering from getting bitch slapped into a pizza shop window by a 400 pound turtle voiced by Jack Black is a more accurate depiction of a panic attack than Velma
8:54 Inside Out: This one annoys me as someone with very bad anxiety. Anxiety and panic are different and so an anxiety attack and a panic attack are different and present differently. They show a panic attack but that would be caused by fear not anxiety. I would gladly explain more or if anyone is interested, I want to stop this bad misconception.
I do think it’s important to differentiate the two; anxiety, panic/fear, and even stress are all different things with largely varying effects. Though, I think it’s also important to consider how much the movie had to simplify complex topics. Its science isn’t perfect by any means, but at the same time I think it’s a very powerful and memorable way to communicate those concepts to a younger audience who may not have known how to describe those feelings before seeing it portrayed that way
Something I really appreciate about the Puss in Boots scene is how there’s only the sound of Puss’ breathing and his heartbeat. I feel like in a lot of scenes where characters are panicking, the visuals and sounds are very overstimulating in order to put the audience in the character’s head, but it always takes me out of the moment a little bit because there’s too much going on. In The Last Wish panic scene, there’s just enough to give the same feeling without being overwhelming. I definitely totally didn’t cry at all when watching it, shh- (Inside Out 2 did an equally amazing job imo! also definitely for sure didn’t cry during that one!! shh!!) Great video overall, love the editing!
This is the first video I’ve ever seen from you, and I gotta say… great editing, I like the jokes you added in (appropriate timing was used), and you approached the topic with maturity and respect 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾 I’m interested in seeing your other content.
I can't believe no one has noticed this in Inside Out 2 omfg- in the panic attack, THERE'S A FLOOD OF NEGATIVE THOUGHTS THAT HAD BEEN PUSHED AWAY FROM RILEY'S MIND BY JOY.
Special shoutout to Demon Slayer. Tanjiro's panic attack in Season 3 over whether to save the villagers or Nezuki was really good. You can see him stress over making the decision, and it ultimately results in him overworking his brain and doing nothing.
I think you should have used the scene from TOH when Hunter and Gus are in the school, just like an episode or two later, when Hunter is having a panic attack and Gus teaches him the breathing trick. I personally feel like that's the better of the two.
Thank you for including not just the depictions of the panic attacks, but also how they are resolved. I struggled getting through this video because it hits very close to home (anxiety disorder), but I appreciate so much when people spread information about helpful coping methods. I use mantras when I'm on the verge of an anxiety episode without even thinking about it; honestly I don't think it ever occurred to me that it's a coping mechanism until you mentioned it? And despite my initial scepticism about "54321" (a grounding technique), it has legitimately pulled me out of a spiral multiple times over the years.
Thank you so much for sharing! I'm so glad that you liked the video, and I thought showing how they can resolve is a very important part of the depiction. :)
Personally, I thought Miraculous did a really good job portraying sheer panic. For context, Marinette literally lost everything she was supposed to watch over and keep safe, pretty much giving Hawkmoth the golden ticket to end the world. When she starts spiraling, Adrien tries his best to ground her and tells her to transform back, putting her in his closet where she straight up COLLAPSES and detransforms. Theres also other episodes where she has panic attacks, but not quite like this lmao

true! I'm so glad they didn't have a punchline. they just let it be.

Lol yeah, it helps to feel things to ground yourself during a panic attack
Also the tapping of her foot. Whenever I would have a really bad panic attack my legs would jump around uncontrollably so I liked that detail
And the sounds of the puck and skates against the ice. I love how they animated the shots of her hand on the bench and sound of the skates on ice
UGH yes this was such an amazing detail

why are you everywhere

Every time Powder/Jinx had an anxiety attack tho.. the fact that it's not even on this list is Criminal
I was thinking the same! Arcane portrays anxiety and panic so well. (My immediate thought was the scene where Powder has her breakdown in episode 3. It's so intense and really really shakes you to the core.)
I think they look like schizophrenic attacks.
Panic attacks and anxiety attacks are different things
Dude, Powder's anxiety breakdown after the explosion is fantastic, I was absolutely gutted watching Vi walk as Powder just sat there wailing
The show does treat the issues very well though and from what ive heard from real therapists its pretty accurate.
one more thing to add about the last wish, you'd think because of perrito asking puss to rub his stomach it would be played for laughs, but it is played so serious and used actual science of a dog's heartbeat having a calming effect.
yes! That's so true!!! :) 💙
@Based_Gigachad_001 what?
@Based_Gigachad_001
Dogs, and even cats, have actually been scientifically proven to help reduce and relieve stress and anxiety!
That made me cry, and before watching this I had a panic attack myself 😅 I would say it matched Puss’s except for no one knew and no one saw.

A lot of animations recently seem to be having characters going through panic attacks and mental health issues. And that’s a good thing. It shows the viewers that they’re not alone and that it’s okay. It makes the shows/movies more relatable and makes you feel bad for the victims. And it makes sense that a movie about emotions would have a character going through one, especially one with Anxiety in it.

that lowkey made me tear up
I felt the same way on Splash Mountain when I got stuck at the lift once.
one of my favorite media panic attacks is from my little pony, in which starlight is being told that she has to meet up with a childhood friend after trauma related to said friend caused her to freak out and do some things she sincerely regrets and is ashamed of. she starts staring blankly into the middle distance and the words of her mentor fade out as a dial tone fades in slowly. it suddenly cuts as twilight gets her attention again, but me and my twin saw the dial tone as such a realistic way to show the feeling on the inside. its not the most realistic one, but it was a clever use of sound to represent something like that
I really do love how the depicted what Anxiety would be doing during a panic attack.
Me too! Thanks for checking out my video :)
10:44 This is literally what I thought.
Hi! I really appreciate it the shrinking. I was sobbing in the theater during Riley‘s panic attack because I know how that feels. I have them due to trauma I am healing from. I appreciate it Puss in boots’s portrayal of wine as well as Jesse from toy story as well. Thank you so much for taking this issue and ranking seriously. I’m dictating this comment and siri likes to mess things up! I actually said ranking not shrinking. Also, I did not say wine, I said portrayal of panic attacks. Siri strikes again, unfortunately.
Hahaha, thank you for the comment! :)
@@shoopydoopy I hope you weren’t laughing at the fact that I experienced panic attacks myself. Because that’s not cool! I chose to share about it to help. You understand why I appreciate that video and how I related to it.
@@laurenrodriguez4786think they were laughing at “Siri strikes again”
@@laurenrodriguez4786 I think the laughter is probably about the Siri part, where it thought you were saying things you weren't?
@@DoctorSweet16 Hi! That makes sense. I'm just so used to mi familia invalidating my trauma and panic attacks that I jumped to conclusions. That's why I tried not to accuse the channel host even though I thought that's what he was doing. I do appreciate the video.
Personally, Ladybug sticks with me because I used to have these panic attacks when I did something wrong.
The way perrito lays his head on Puss's chest honestly made me cry because its an absolutely adorable representation of DPT
Finally someone talks about hunters panic attack in the owl house I never see people talking about it
Theres another scene in the owl house where hunter has another panic attack (labyrinth runners) and gus calms down with his breathing technique
Good point! I should have included that one
Cristina Vee did an excellent job portraying a panic attack in Miraculous! My respect and worship for her only climbed when I watched that scene!
Aw, no mention of fluttershy panic attack? It was so well done
4:35 THE RUNNING NOISES😭
6:21 "for the first time in years" nah, for the first time, EVER. it's stated in the episode that he's never been to a doctor before, lol (not trying to be mean)
1:37 The only thing I’ve been saying since I’ve started watching is “Hehe Blueberry” °^°
🫐💙
I was very surprised to see Gumball at number 3 until I realized it was incredibly simple and retained the show's humor
Mario recovering from getting bitch slapped into a pizza shop window by a 400 pound turtle voiced by Jack Black is a more accurate depiction of a panic attack than Velma
8:54 Inside Out:
This one annoys me as someone with very bad anxiety. Anxiety and panic are different and so an anxiety attack and a panic attack are different and present differently. They show a panic attack but that would be caused by fear not anxiety. I would gladly explain more or if anyone is interested, I want to stop this bad misconception.
thank god im not the only one thinking that
I do think it’s important to differentiate the two; anxiety, panic/fear, and even stress are all different things with largely varying effects. Though, I think it’s also important to consider how much the movie had to simplify complex topics. Its science isn’t perfect by any means, but at the same time I think it’s a very powerful and memorable way to communicate those concepts to a younger audience who may not have known how to describe those feelings before seeing it portrayed that way
Panic is a type of anxiety. Anxiety is a type of fear.
I definitely totally didn’t cry at all when watching it, shh- (Inside Out 2 did an equally amazing job imo! also definitely for sure didn’t cry during that one!! shh!!)
Great video overall, love the editing!
4:33 There’s actually another scene from TOH of Hunter panicking in the episode “Labyrinth Runners.”
I’d say it’s better than the example u chose.
I'm glad more media is starting to have these!
Me too! Thank you so much for checking out my video! :)
This is the first video I’ve ever seen from you, and I gotta say… great editing, I like the jokes you added in (appropriate timing was used), and you approached the topic with maturity and respect 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
I’m interested in seeing your other content.
Thank you so much for the wonderful comment :)
I love Demon Slayer! I felt so bad for Tanjiro.
4:29 Hunter also has one again, with Gus late in the show
huh… judging from the thumbnail, a LOT of warm coloured characters have panic attacks
I think you should have used the scene from TOH when Hunter and Gus are in the school, just like an episode or two later, when Hunter is having a panic attack and Gus teaches him the breathing trick. I personally feel like that's the better of the two.
Speaking of drawings… I love your persona/art style..the blueberry! it’s so cute!
Thank you!!! :)
no arcane with that powder scene is actually criminal
Jinx has too many great depictions. To be fair, though, they are all mixed with a dash of psychosis.
@@plaidhatter1674 that's what I was thinking, like are those panic attacks, meltdowns, breakdowns or just psychosis?
Stop I had to pause the show when I saw that scene because it was too much like mine 😭
Thank you for sharing, and for checking out my video! :)
@@shoopydoopy dude thanks for the video! It was really insightful, I really enjoyed it :D
I love the Schaffrillas-Esque transitions, it’s by far my fav type of UA-cam transitions. Bravo, Doopy.
If Bojack wasn’t in the list I was gonna go Ham!!!! (The Jessi visuals, inside out visuals and puss and boots visuals made me cry so much)
