I used to drive from the Fox Valley to Iron Mt. for work. When I was driving, 141 was closed through Niagara and the detour was through Norway. I remember thinking Norway looked like a cute little town. Now I wish I'd taken the time to explore it.
Upper Michigan can be gorgeous but the winters can be brutal. Come back in the spring (May) and continue downstate… there are many interesting places to explore.
Awesome video as usual! Beautiful autumn scenery as well. Love Marty’s humor and Sally’s reactions!🤣 Very informative about this town’s history. Great work, you two!! 😃👍
My great grandfather Albert Eklund donated the land for the cemetery and the fairgrounds. He crafted the family monument that you showed in your video. He built and ran Norway Granite and Marble Works. You can see the stone building in the back of your video. He built the stone wall that runs all the way around the cemetery. He spelt the word built wrong on the wall. He also built the stone house next to the Granite business that is still there today as far as I know. He later built a house on top of the hill behind the business but that has since been torn down. When Great Grandpa Eklund died, his son-in-law Earl Peterson (my grandfather) took over the business. He was a member of The First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain where he created and donated a beautiful altar table that I believe is made out of marble.
I’ve really enjoyed your travels through the U.P. We lived in Grand Rapids for a year after we were first married, and I always regretted not getting to know more about the upper potion of the state. I’m doing it vicariously through you today.
Norway was served by the old C&NW RR between Power and Iron Mountain MI. Final run of the remaining old C &NW RR passenger train between Escanaba and Iron Mountain.
The Anderson Memorial Building used to be Anderson Memorial Hospital from ‘61-‘96. And the Rock Shop used to be the office of Dr. William Gladstone who then leased it to me after he retired.
Great presentation and a wealth of information! I had never heard of Norway and I live in Michigan and travel in the UP all the time. My sister lives up there.
It's not just a biking vote, I mean Viking boat. There's a silly saying about that: "She got her tongue tied around her eye teeth, and couldn't see what she was saying." Little known and less important fact (I think) is that at 6:27, the clown holding the duck is, I believe, a circus clown from back when I was a kid, by the name of Emmett Kelly. I believe he was with Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Informative video, good job. My aunt used to work at the Vertin's store in Calumet. It was a huge store for the area, 4 stories and a basement. I knew they had another store in Houghton, but didn't know about the one in Norway.
Love the video and Marty sure was on a roll for this one! 😂😂 I always learn something new when I watch your videos. I did not know the cute hats you wear were called Stormy Kromers
I used to live there. Wasn’t terrible, but I lived on the mountain when the ski hill was closed. Couldn’t get internet and they didn’t plow the road. Wasn’t fun.
I go there to the St Vinnies! But not so much anymore. Because I used to be able to also go to the Goodwill in Iron Mt and they closed it! Very cool! I go thrifting and never did anything else there. I'll have to take an opportunity to do that.
I enjoyed seeing Norway. I have never been there but heard about it. As always a fun visit to another interesting town. Thanks Sally and Marty and pups!
My best friend growing up lived in that house you showed next to the Swedish Passport Company when you were talking about where the hospital was. I think my grandpa's grave was one of those in the background as well. He died in '86 and my grandma is still alive pushing 100. He was the president of the closed bank you showed across from Viking Square. Also I fell down Piers Gorge once about 50 feet. You didn't show any of them but there are some high cliffs there.
Another great video. I really liked the BRF video since i am quite familiar with the area. Reminded me of the Static X song Wisconsin Death Trip. Based on the Michael Lesy book.
Another excellent video, although, apparently news has not reached Norway, MI, or its town leaders that Viking helmets did not have horns. Probably too costly to fix the statue(s) and other things that still erroneously depict the horns
Norway Michigan looks like an interesting town. Love the Viking influence! Love the signs on the poles. Dog bakery is cool. Masonic corner is cool. Love to visit Rock shops! Sink holes can be a real problem! Aww the story of the red door and the monkey. St Mary's Catholic church is nice. That is an interesting museum! Love that log cabin! I could see how there could be a controversy on the spelling of O'Dill/Odill. Always love to visit cementaries in towns. Would love to visit that shop with all the Scandinavian gifts. Love you pointed out the vikings ships. That is cool about the spot where you can fill your water container up. That is a nice white water rafting area.
No pasty shop, but a few miles up the highway in Quinnesec is a popular one, that delivers to us former Yoopers who grew up in Norway but now live in Texas. They have a website if you’re interested.
Something else worth the mention, the house at the corner of 2nd and Main Street was the old Catholic Rectory. It is haunted. The house next door to that, I believe, housed Nuns, as there was a staircase that led from the rectory down to the house...
Great Vid Sally! you should drive to Mexico and make vids....do not believe all the lies about the "danger" Mexicans are friendly and always happy to help....Try Baja first it's like Mexico Light...but the whole country is wonderful and full of history
A unique town indeed.
Thanks for another great story
Our pleasure! So happy you enjoyed it 😊
Norway resident here. Stumbled onto your video and you did a great job showing off our little city. Thank you and be sure to come back again
Marty is pretty low key. I appreciate his under-understated humor.
Thanks.
I love old history thanks for having me along for the ride
I love the UP....even just Upper Michigan. It gets weird fast, but always great.

Just down the road a piece from "Vulcan".
What an interesting town! Thanks Sally and Marty!
Loved it. Keep a diary. No one will forget you.😊
That is what these videos are, a video diary.
Sally, those hats of yours, ROCK!
Michigan has a ton of clean, interesting small towns
I have family there! Made a couple trips there this summer and fall. It’s a nice town!
12 second mark the gray building was my grandparents' home and tavern for over 50 years.
Upper Michigan can be gorgeous but the winters can be brutal. Come back in the spring (May) and continue downstate… there are many interesting places to explore.

GREAT TO SEE THE BOTH OF YOU.
Hello Sally and Marty from Longview Texas. I enjoy your open spaces.
Hello there! Thank you, appreciate it. Texas has some mighty fine open spaces, too.
At the festival Arthur Garfunkel shows up dressed as a Viking. Another case of Art imitating Leif.
Norway was served by the old C&NW RR between Power and Iron Mountain MI. Final run of the remaining old C &NW RR passenger train between Escanaba and Iron Mountain.
I'm enjoying this interesting travel video !!!! Thanks for posting !!!!
Loved the video! Beautiful colors! Thank you!
Thanks Sally 😊 and Marty 😊
Excellent stories on the Norway and surrounding area. Five Stars
So many interesting places up in your neck of the woods. Well done as usual, Sally and Marty. Safe travels.
thank you for this video, I’ve been jones’n for some Sally!
The Anderson Memorial Building used to be Anderson Memorial Hospital from ‘61-‘96. And the Rock Shop used to be the office of Dr. William Gladstone who then leased it to me after he retired.
Thanks for the adventure and History lesson!
I love your vids Sally, you are so amazing! 🥰 Marty makes me laugh 😃

Great presentation and a wealth of information! I had never heard of Norway and I live in Michigan and travel in the UP all the time. My sister lives up there.

Hi, Sally. I always thank you for your great video! Best wishes to you and Happy the week. ❤
I grew up here. Graduated in 1979 and haven't been back. After 5 years in the Navy I've lived in Virginia. Would like to go back sometime.
I used to live there. Wasn’t terrible, but I lived on the mountain when the ski hill was closed. Couldn’t get internet and they didn’t plow the road. Wasn’t fun.

You should try the Kickapoo river tubing or canoeing. Fewer mosquitoes thusbyear.
I see you have your Stormy Kromer hat on. Ed Gein used to wear those. Happy Halloween.
Ed was a bad man
I was just there in Norway at the fair I think late august, Cute quaint town! My daughter lives in Gladstone..another cute town in the UP.
Very cool! I believe that was the very same fair that Chippy made his escape from so many years ago!
@@SightseeingSally chippy your dog?
@@loriwhinery3210 🙈nooo, might want to rewatch the video. 🙊
You were so close ! The Stormy Chromer factory is in Ironwood and they offer free tours. Very much worth your time.
Used to live here as a kid before moving to NYC-crazy to look back at it and so nice to remember my roots

I live in Norway and absolutely love it ❤❤❤
Absolutely nailed the "shave it" joke
Good place to shop for Christmas presents is at the Feed Mill ,

Just down the road from Norway , is Vulcan , and the Big John Mine , under the ground , one of the deepest underground lakes around , 1300 feet ,

I noticed you're wearing the famous Stormy Kromer hat made in the UP. Looks good on ya.
Any pasty shops in Norway?
Didn’t see any but they got to have one, that’s a u.p. must in every town I’ve been in.
