- The key to layering for Scottish winter climbing is simple. It's about providing maximum storm protection without the weight penalty or sacrificing freedom of movement.
Dave MacLeod takes us through his go-to Scottish winter climbing kit, and the principles behind each layer.

Thanks for the review.
Just came here to say the sheep in the back are a nice highlight in this video xD

ME gear takes some beating. Great review. :)
Quick question.. what size are you normally with ME, Did you go up a size for the Mission Jacket? Reason I'm asking is I bought a 2nd hand frontier jacket and I can't use it as an 3rd/outer layer as it's too tight. Do you suggest sizing up from small to medium to accommodate a simple fleece? Cheers, TIA.
Thank you.
Do you have any thoughts about buffalo eg the Special 6 and / or paramo as part- alternatives to layering in winter? I say part layering as some say you still need something to go over the jacket when you stop.
Hi good kit. I am looking at the softshells. Do you have a particular model that might suit hiking in winter and autumn thats durable with a backpack on .
I guess the principle of your soft shells is similar to a Buffalo Shirt, or a fleece with windshirt worn over the top ? I sometimes get a bit fed up with changing clothes while out and am looking for a breathable all in one midlayer with windproof properties. Regards
Try the Frontier Hoody.
how do i look up those shoes? I Can’t seem to find them

Great video, well presented 👍 why the subtitles though?? I can understand him clear as day. Must be for the overseas viewers, fair play I guess.
For deaf climbers such as myself subtitles are a godsend. It doesn't really matter how clear someone is if you're profoundly deaf.
You gonna make somebody go broke, buying all that shut!
why the subtitles? ahahah
His thick accent is a bit difficult to understand for Americans
Its helpful for deaf people watching youtube
@@MattD86 You need to come to Scotland if you think that Dave has a thick accent! :D
I thought the same haha because he's Scottish I guess.
Because for us non-native English speakers, it can be a bit hard to understand thick English accents (wether Scottish Irish or southern USA to give u some examples).
I brought this jacket in cosmos blue some months ago. Never using until the weather conditions deemed so. I took it up snowdon 4 weeks ago in very poor weather conditions, driving rain and 60 mph winds, the rain went straight through it and in the process completely destroying my smart phone. I'm currently looking into how to get my money back from mountain equipment although they don't appear to want to do so
You have to zip them up.
You mean the tupilak or the fitzroy? I know for a fact that the tupilak comes with a little information card in the pockets reminding you that the zips aren't fully waterproof, so you should use a waterproof bag or similar to keep important things dry in foul conditions, unless that was missing from yours? The fitzroy isn't fully waterpoof, just water resistant.
@@mrgreatauk hi. No it was the changabang. I was gutted, and slightly embarrassed as id told everyone how good it supposed to be
@@davidfalat4377 Fair enough must have been quite annoying! To be honest I've had Mountain equipment jackets for years now and never had a problem
@@davidfalat4377 I have the kalanka (the precursor to changabang) it lets water in through the pockets. I've wrecked a phone that way too.
