I like that Dirk appreciates Ben’s artistry, and doesn’t bash anyone. Keeping it classy 100% 👌🏼
S.C.I.E.N.C.I.E. Blew my mind because of your Bass man, you are a monster!
Miss this guy! One of my influences in bass
I stopped listening to Incubus after Morning View. You took the groove with you when you left and they were never quite the same to me. Which isn't really a bad thing as bands and artists change and grow in new directions but their stuff after your departure just never quite did it for me any longer.
I'm 40 years old now, I still listen to all the Incubus stuff up to Morning View and you're one of my inspirations for deciding to learn to play the bass around 5 years ago. I'm in love with it.
thank you so much!
@@EastofJune Noooo thank YOU! :)
Crow left to murder was a great album just like morning view. With that being said, sick sad little world from that album is my favorite and Alex had a part in that. He definitely had the groove. I wish they would do a reunion. I think that initial chemistry would spark new creativity.
Its true. Science Morning View, and Make Yourself were pinnacle Incubus. Everything else after that was average at best if not painful. If not now when should be deleted forever.
This so much. I cherish the albums DL was on. Everything Incubus created after just fades into oblivion. DL bass lines are unforgettable.
Thanks for the answer at the end mate! You’re a legend.
Video uploaded on May 19th, 2020.
Has a 7-month old comment.
Wtf?
It probably was uploaded first for paytreon members or something similar.
I would love a 'Storytime with Dirk' video series of tales from the Incubus years.
Ooo good idea.
@@EastofJune could even be a podcast.
This would be awesome! As well as videos on how you played the Incubus basslines!
I wait a very long time to see this interview. Thanks Alex!
Me too
Nice one, Dirk! Man, you were always one of my biggest influences regarding playing bass, thanks for that!
Respect.
Yours truly.
my wife love HILIKUS so much thanks dirk from AMONGUS TO MORNING VIEW!
So, so glad to see you back in the music industry. Fun fact: you're the reason I bought a 5 string bass way back in 2003 and I still play that thing all the time. Keep on doing your thing, I'll be listening!
hope you can reunite to incubus, I miss you playing on incubus man, respect to ben. but you're the heart of incubus man!
Thank you for answering my questions, Dirk! I wish the best for East of June and look forward to what you guys put out.
Thanks for taking some of your time to answer fan questions. We love you Dirk!
Nice Q&A! Excited for the new tunes!
Huge loss for Incubus. DL is an amazing musician and very creative. I Hope East of June gets to play here in Brazil.
Fred?
JESUS CHRIST I LOVE THIS MAN GIVE HIM A PODCAST
Agree!
What would you want to hear him talk about?
East of June starting with interviewing his current bandmates..and then other artist/musicians
@@EastofJune HIS EDEN RIG!!!
@@joshmayer5419 That's a good idea. We might have to explore that one!
I didn't think this would happen but it did! Now I need to check out this band!
You was the soul of incubus, the fucking bass player!!! Are the best! greetings from Peru.
this dude is legend.
This is beautiful
It was good to hear the answer to the last question 👍🏼
I think we all came here to hear if he still keeps in touch with members of incubus
I would love to hear Ben and East of June collaborate
Ben Simmons?
I love you dirk lance :)
At last, something new from one of my favorite bassists growing up!!!
Me & my Friends watched Incubus live in concert here in Los Angeles last year (October) for the 20th anniversary of Make Yourself and we were really hoping that somehow you'll make an appearance and jam for a couple of songs, but I guess that will never happen.
Please come back to Incubus Sir Dirk
YES PLEASE!!
Grew up with Incubus in the 90s and was always a fan of your playing. Make Yourself is still one of my favorite albums of all time. They just didn't have the same feel and didn't do it for me after your departure. Enjoyed this Q/A and would love to hear more of your insights from your time in Incubus.
Just wanted to say if it wasn’t for Dirk Lance neither bass nor music would’ve ever crossed my mind. Thank you for all the delicious grooves you’ve written and I hope to hear more. I’ve always set in my mind that you are the greatest groove writer ever
Much appreciated 🙏
Alex is honestly what made Incubus… He’s the reason they were so Good and Got huge and it’s a big surprise that he was let go from the band, he’s a very underrated bass player and de-valued.
Word!
It's amazing that people think Incubus is all about the MUSICAL chemistry, and leave out the personal chemistry that seems to be the reaaon Dirk left the band
Would be cool if Ben moved to rhythm/lead guitar and Alex was back on bass
Give this man his own XM DJ spot
Alex, do you believe that there are external forces not of this world that influence music and culture?
When Dirk left, so did the heart and soul of Incubus
One out of the four founding members leaves (three remaining) and there goes the heart and soul? Where is the logic in that? Lmao 🤣🤣🤣
Incubus will be celebrating 20 years of their Morning View album. Any possibility you will be performing with them on their upcoming special event? Thank you for an amazing album.🌊
@@natehtf5760 Same.
At first, i was quite frustrated you leaving Incubus. But over the years, i kind of get it. We never really grow up; just adapt to the situation(s). Incubus & Mudvayne were so good for that era.
Personally, i like the new stuff East of June & wanted to know the band more. Why not have a jam session & mess around?
Salute to you dirk, for me you and ben are different kinda bass player and have their own style, but both of you highly respect from my pov, some said ben is too bla bla, dirk is to bla bla, NO you both are great
Just saw Incubus last night but it wasn't the same without the dirk vibe. You're a genius, man.
A magicians deck
I'll try this again cause youtube hates me and deletes my comments lol it did this last night on my boy brandon Hoovers vid. What I was saying was I'm not sure the great mr dirk will remember this, but here is a funny story from my teenage years. Dirk is my main influence when I was younger for buying a bass and trying to slap and get into that style. I was a huge incubus fan from fungus all the way up until morning view. Nothing against the records after those, I just like the other ones alot and I think that's mostly cause of dirk. So I seen incubus about 8 or 9 times and when I was about 13 or 14 i asked my grandmother and uncle to take me to an incubus show at ft Lauderdale fl which I had family living there and it was about 2 hours from where I live in sebring fl. This was my 4the time seeing incubus , the first being befor korn in Lakeland fl in 1998. I've never heard anything like that before and still think his bass lines are freaking classic. Anyways after the headline show for them ( right when make yourself came out) I waited outside by the bus . The first one to come out was mr lance and I looked at him shy and smiled and asked for his autograph. He looked at me and said sure let me go jerk off and shower and I'll be right back. Lol he came back to me and looked and me and said sorry or something cause he seen my grandmother waiting behind me lol . Which it didn't bother me, that's how I talk joking around anyways . But it was so cool that he came back out and talked to me for about 30 min. I got out of incubus after he left. Got back into them a few months ago and was like , where the hell is this awesome bass player at now and here I am. I have been listing to alot of mello stuff and alot of julien k lately and I'm definitely going to support this group. I love her voice and The music is great. I'm gonna hop off now and bye the album or Download it, what ever is available. But anyways he wont remember this story, but I just wanted to say thanks for making great music again. You are great dirk. Much love eric from fl
Wow what a story! Sounds very much like a Dirk comment 😂 I'll make sure he sees this. We appreciate your support so much and hope you enjoy our new tunes! ❤❤ EP is out this Friday! --Emily (also sorry for the late response lol)
What are we going to do tonight Alex? Try to take over the local Starbucks!!!..I mean the 🌎.
Fangus Among Us is my favorite Incubus album. It's blast of insane energy of fun pulsing from Dirk's bass to listener's heart. Incubus is a not Incubus without Dirk.
Is it just me or does he have 2 different colored eyes? He's a heterochromiac! Thanks for being the inspiration to pick up the bass
Well he answered a lingering question I had for a long time...he's way passed incubus.
Why did he leave Incubus in the 1st place? Can anyone that has replied on here explain that to me
I heard he got overwhelmed by the popularity and fame from Morning View and thought it was best to leave.
I think you right with the overwhelmed thought, but I always thought the song Leech was about him. I don't think the departure was all warm and cozy 🤷🏾♂️. I also always thought he was actually kicked out of the band, but neither him nor anyone else in the current Incubus lineup has ever really talked about it anywhere that I've seen.
I can't believe Incubus did anything without you ... 💔
12:51 Dirk, nobody does this solo right...
I meant Dirk and Brandon in like 1998 Norfolk Boathouse. Miss the days and lost my autographed ticket dammit
what kind of amp does dirk use
He still uses the same Eden amp and cabs
@@EastofJune thanks, what amp exactly?
@@funkybunkii6190 WT 800
@@EastofJune holy, thanks guys, keep the good job!
Oh cool…I never realized that Dirk was dichromatic. Got those wacky, Max Scherzer eyes
John Frusciante came back after 10 years. A Dirk Lance return is not out of the question haha
Ummmm... different circumstances surrounding their departures, perhaps? What a foolish comment!
No one gonna talk about that Halo skull?
Dirk didnt It ever dawn on you when you left Incubus the music went downhill?
it definitely became different and lost some of that funky incubusness
@@pmiskovic ehhhh just a little too attached to the funk part of their sound. If you prefer that, great! Just don't dismiss the later stuff as a result 👍
I do believe Dirks departure took a toll on Incubus sound on their later material
So, Incubus was supposed to rehash their older sound over and over? 🤔 that makes no sense. Those guys are way too talented to do that and would have the band a grave injustice
Omg , I thought you were incubus drummer .. are you left handed? I'm lefty , but I play unorthodox like you .jazzy , ever hear Phil Collins play drums ?
What would be more interesting is how YOU would reinterpret the newer Incubus stuff (i can't say his name. i'm not apologising).
I remember back in HS when we would want to cover their songs but couldn't because it was hard to find a good bassist hahaha Incubus was never thesame again after you left dude!
Incubus is nothing without you , can't stand any of the new stuff.. AT ALL , It just doesent fill my heart with joy like funked up Science and Make Yourself
"Incubus is nothing without you," huh? Speaks more about YOU than it does THEM because a true fan would accept the change in sound (and band member).
Just gonna say it. Incubus was better with Dirk.
Agreed.
By far
Say it louder lol
I disagree. They were different then not better or worse. Brandons vibe was differentvthan dirks at that time. And knowing life that wasnt the onlybreason he left. U don't always see eye to eye after growing up. And that's OK. U don't have to pick sides.
@@mobeus84 I preferred the incredible funk and funky heavy rock metal don’t even know the names for these things. Just all of Science, Make Yourself, and Morning View. I also love the radio stuff after Dirk and some of the non-radio stuff, just far far far from almost all of it like I did with Dirk. Just music. It’s ok to grow apart and so forth. But just my two cents on the music and how it struck me.
Well my comment was deleted so that's weird lol
That is weird! Went to our notifications and saw part of it, but didn't see it here to reply! Would love to hear what you were gonna say!
@@EastofJune lol ok I'll try again. It wasn't anything bad. I'll re type it and by the way I'm glad I found your music. Really great. The singer has a lovely voice.
@@EastofJune it took away my like too. Weird. Anyways I'll re do it. Thanks eric
Does anyone know the real reason Dirk left Incubus. I cant find any info on that. They all keep it tight lipped. Was it musical differences? How the hell do you walk away after Morning View?
Thanks for uploading. If you have a minute come check out our music videos - We're an indie rock band and think you may dig our sound. Appreciate it.
incubus never sound the same after you left...... Incubus sounds light.... not the incubus that i used to know...(musicality)
The problem is not them. It's YOU for not evolving with the band. Case closed 🫡
Great bassist! Attitude is poor. I can see why it would be hard to work with you and why they asked you to leave the band.
his style is so flawless. just play what's needed. ben is more a guitar player who overplays the bassline. fine. but not my desire
Yeah I remember seeing Ben play on an Incubus concert (playing older Incubus songs) and it instantly sounded different. Almost like he always plays "too much/too many notes". Ben is a great musician. DynaMike said that Ben can run circles around him when it comes to playing guitar, but not as good a fit as Dirk was imho.
I really enjoyed incubus when dirk was in the band, but damn, he comes across as so smug and arrogant.... Kinda annoying . Like he doesn't have anything good to say about growing up and being in a band with his friends?
Incubus real Bass Player. Ben kenny👎👎💩💩
Agreed
Incubus ORIGINAL bass player. Let's not confuse that. Clearly, it wasn't working out on a personal level, and you all forget that very quickly
It hurts to read comments from folks that cant accept bands that evolve and become musically mature. Incubus moved on. Dirk moved on.
This should be top comment and personally made so by Dirk Lance himself 👍
