Ben Kenney has long been the bass player for Incubus, since replacing Dirk Lance, but before that he used to rock the guitar and bass for a hip-hop outfit called The Roots. Ben was asked by one of our members what it was like to play for both bands and how that affected his style of play along with the general transition from going to hip-hop to rock. Ben talks about his time with The Roots, and the climate change to playing for Incubus. Ben also addresses replacing a musician of a current band and how that can be a difficult process, especially when you really like and respect the musician that you are replacing. If you are an artist looking to do something great in the Music Business, pay attention to the wise words from Ben Kenney!

What a great clip. Never have before heard Ben's voice. Didn't know he was such a massive musician and have mad respect for Dirk now. To be admired by a musician from The Roots, damn!
I was initially one of 'those' fans that really hated Ben. He did in fact replace my favorite bass player. But years later now, I've come to not only appreciate what he does, but respect him and really dig his addition to the music. Incubus has changed so much musically that it's not ever a fair comparison between him and Dirk.
Dirk is and always will be my top 5, and he has a style all of his own that has influenced me greatly. But Ben is a perfect fit for Incubus now, and is an excellent musician. I've been able to see him live and listen to his stuff, great chops for sure. The only time I am skeptical is him playing the old stuff, sometimes I love it and sometimes I don't.
Anyway, point is, I think by now everyone has given him a chance and we should be able to agree that he is the perfect fit for where Incubus has gone.
Couldn't agree more with you. Being a Dirk fan, I admit Ben's awesome.
He is a good musician, plays a lot of instruments, but in incubus, a guitar player who plays the bass.
I was seriously excited to hear what Ben would bring when he joined Incubus because his hip hop background was a curiosity
Same thoughts here. It feels like Ben wants to overplay the old basslines, which are more simple in terms of quantity of notes and more spaced-out... which isn't a bad thing, it is just a different kind of groove
correct!
Dig around and listen to some of Ben's solo work and early bands. Since he joined Incubus their music is so much driven with Ben's style. Ben is not only a great bass player, he is fantastic guitar player and drummer and one hell of a singer as well. Ben IS music.
I love Ben he’s cool, and his solo work is awesome. His voice is great to. There’s nothing not to like about him
I agree!
Hey Ben, Light Grenades influenced me as much as Make yourself or Morning View. I am so glad I got to see you on tour twice!
My wife is a lawyer.
i love ben and respect this guy because he is so creative and a big contributions to incubus, without ben? incubus is gone
Dirk left Incubus at the very end of 2002. That gives him a full 11 years with the band. Ben joined as they started recording Crow in early 2003. That's Dirk's 11 years vs. Ben's 9.4 years (at the time of this video's recording). Maybe Renman was putting the beginning of the timeline at the recording of S.C.I.E.N.C.E. for some reason, which was technically their first "full-length" studio album, whatever that means. That's the only thing I can think of.
Musically speaking, in my opinion Dirk was more laid back, in-the-pocket kind of player, Ben is little bit more flashy ,with more fills and improv added to the basslines. Just two different types of players, and it makes appreciate the role of the bassist and how replacing it drastically changes the band's composition and sound.
I guess some people don't remember all the base players in some rock bands..But we all can never forget that Paul McCartney is the bass player in the Beatles..Maybe Paul isn't the best, but he can never be forgotten, we all know who Paul is!.....I think Ben is a great bass player..He fits in well with the guys in the band. And he adds a lot to the band Incubus, and I think he is Cool and he is a cutie too!
Hi Steve ! I'm currently doing a bass tutorial about one of Ben Kenney's bass line in Incubus ("Pendulous Threads" - Light Grenades).
Can I use some snipets of your video for this ? (Of course you'll be credited in the video and the video description with a direct link to it.)
Oh I like him; I think he's a very chill dude, and he seems to know how to take care of the band. He also brought kind of a social networking aspect to Incubus when they were seriously lacking it. I love talking Incubus to other Incu-geeks! haha
Where can I see this full interview?
hmm well Morning View came out in 2001 right? That would only be ten years, since that was last album they did together (with Dirk). Ben Kenney has been with them (one can say) a bit before 2004 (when "ACLOM" came out) because the band with Ben Kenney had to have enough time to first write as well as rehearse the songs enough times from that album before they might have been ready to record the album, and then after recording the album it takes time to release it..
Slap ben slap
Where I said "Ben's 9.4 years," I meant to type "Ben's 10.4 years." Typo.
Trying to imagine Steve pounding the table! ...ask Brandon.
Ah that makes sense then...hmmm Idk I've personally have felt a little sketch about the renman, but yeah maybe hes going by how long he's managed incubus ? Either way you're right :)
Renman said Ben has been in Incubus longer than Dirk was? I thought Dirk was a founding member in 1991. That would've given him 14 years with the band when Ben has only been with them for nine. Is that wrong?
so the album could have been done as early as 2003(?) maybe? So ballpark let's say that Ben Kenney has been in the band since 2003 just to be fair (to give that little leeway for recording and writing) that would give Ben Kenney almost about a year more (or a tad bit more) in the band than Dirk...Funny how that happens haha. Sorry for geekin' out like that hahah, I was just as curious about that statement
I don't hate Ben, but come on. Dirk Lance was a legend. It's understandable. Ben is still great, but Dirk is on another level. The Willie's Nerve Clinic stuff is also pretty damned insane. Dirk is a much more forward and progressive / out front bass player, where as Ben lays back. Different styles.
If Dirk comes back randomly, that would be insane.
I've thought about that too. That'd be either awesome or chaotic.
dirk is the reason why i started to play bass. i don't hate ben but i don't listen to the newer incubus songs. science, make yourself and morning view are the only album i still listen to in incubus
not half a dirk
Dirk>Ben Dirk to me is a bass purist. Ben should have been a guitar player.
Ben you dont even deserve to change Dirk Lance's bass strings.............
