Hello everyone - thank you so much for all of the responses with regards to the painted pots. I have to say, I am still no further forward to making a decision as it seems there is a 50/50 split between the pure white and aged pot! Thanks for your help and I will keep you updated! N
I would paint the upper part of the internal border too, to avoid the orangey. I agree, the white, even though too white, is somehow chic, making a sort of an elegant contrast with all the grey around
I like the grey “aged” look more. But I would definitely paint the inside of the pots as well (at least the top part) so that it’s not obvious that they were the terracotta orange colour originally
I love the pots Nicholas, as a paint effects person I would paint the pots grey then go over with a white wash, just dilute the white either with a scumble glaze or water, then paint and wipeoff gently. I would also paint about halfway down inside black which will blend with the compost. Alternatively, black pots look very chic with green foliage and white flowers. My favourite in a garden is black, white and green. Good luck! 💖
Noted your reply. I love using black pots because it enhances the color of the flowers to my way of thinking. I understand the reasoning behind painting the door because the area is on a lower level. With SO many gray days the black could easily feel depressing. That said I LOVE a glossy black door in many if not most settings. I have seen some doors of lighter colors that I feel is a good choice for that particular home.
I think if your Door Frame will stay white, I would go with the All White Pots. 😊. You have now inspired me to start my Back Patio! I cannot wait for the next Vlog. Have a Fun Week!!!!
WHITE !! And I love how you paint your furniture which usually has a two tone, weathered look. I also don’t typically like pure white. So I’m surprised. It seemed like the gray one came across more as busy/ dirty. I could be wrong but love the clean white.
Marketplace is the perfect place for finding garden bargains, wonderful planters and statues at good value prices. Looking forward to seeing your courtyard garden take shape.
Nicolas, I think it's a very nice idea to let the viewers choose the color of the plant pots. Since there is already a lot of gray on the walls, I would leave the pots white or in the color of the door. That way you create a nice contrast. Good luck and have fun creating a new garden!🌻🌱
I liked the white pot better nicer than all dark as like you said lot's of grey in Edinburgh.. the door is far better lighter too ... .. 😄 wasn't expecting a recipe in the video x nice..
1st, I’d definitely go with the white pots. Especially now that you’ve painted the door a lovely light shade. May I say Nicholas, how absolutely creative and inspirational you are ! This was well worth the wait and I enjoyed it so very much. 😊. That recipe is divinely delicious. Much love to you and Sofie 💕. I can’t wait for next week to see what else you have done. 🪴😊
The all white looks beautiful! I vote for the all white. The new lighter color on the door looks so good! You have such great ideas! Looking forward to next weekl!
At this stage, I think the ageing grey of the pot would be better as it would suit the current area.I think the plain white does not blend in as well. However, it also depends on what other decor or furniture etc that you will use to dress the area. We as viewers don't know what else you will do in that space as yet, only you will know that. So, commenting on the pot colour is only as we see the area as it currently is. Another point is perhaps the pots should be the last thing you do after you have dressed the area that way you would see what pot colour suits better. Having said that, I think the area needs to be spruced up with a lot of colour to make it more inviting.
I really like the white pot without details, I think. I wondered how the door would turn out, but it really turned out so nice, giving a warmer feel. It matches your clothes colors! I think is was a great decision to do your door. The hardware will really make it pop. I wanna make those cookies. Thse toppings really make cookies and cakes so so pretty. Thank you and cant wait to see part 2!
Your courtyard has so much character, that the all white pots bring a highlighting effect. Which will look even more special, when seen against the beautiful shades of deep green foliage. You will have in the garden when your work is complete. looking forward to part two
As for the pots go with the White...they will get rustic on their own quite quick. If i had your outdoor aeria i would fill the courtyard garden with mauve and pink climbing roses and some ivy..William Lobb ,old pink musk ,Marie Louise and Cardinal De Richelieu are some of my favourite roses and because they are pink and mauve they will go well with your grey stone courtyard..i think only William Lobb is a climbing moss rose .cant wait to see what you come up with. The door looks nice white/cream instead of black gloss. Lovely video.
I feel the white pots would look lovely and bright, ready for greenery or beautiful spring flowers it will brighten all the stone in the courtyard! Whatever you decide will be just perfect!
Love the choice of pots you bought. I myself quite like the white, they look very chic with just the white. But whatever you decide they will look gorgeous in your space. Love the color you chose for the door, really lightens up your space. Can’t wait to see how you decorate your outdoor space. 😊❤️🇨🇦
Looking forward to seeing how you transform your courtyard. The Cotswolds are beautiful and I would find it very hard to leave there. Thank you for your lovely videos, Nicholas.
Haven't finished this video yet but just to say how glad I am to find your wonderful channel. You have a lovely calming voice Nicholas. You're so cute. I love that you're having a go at things yourself, inspires me to get started on a project of mine (time permitting) God bless you x
What a lovely, relaxing video for a Sunday. With the pots, it's hard to decide which finish is better without seeing them where they're going to go or with the bay trees in them. Also, painting your door will make such a difference to how they look. Personally, I prefer the pot with the grey added as it seems to match the different colours of the stone in your courtyard so well. I also think that it might look better with such a pale door. You will know what to do!
With the dampness in that area, as shone on the surrounding stone, I would have thought leaving the terracotta pots to age themselves would have been a better approach. The flowers will trail over the pots shortly and everything will be most beautiful. The pot color will be irrelevant.
Another elegant presentation! Those cookies look scrumptious! As for the planters, I prefer the white color, I think it makes the colors of the flowers and plants in the pot really pop.
I adore your videos Nicholas. You have a very calming manner and that's a joy to watch. I can't wait to see your courtyard unfold. Lots of trellis and greenery on the walls will bring it all together x
The terracotta pot looked great when it was white with only the ribs painted mottled grey. That approach maintained the integrity and beauty of the essential design elements of the pot. The grey paint inside the diamond shapes of the raised ribs looks too splotchy and messy and confuses the eye. I would repaint the splotchy area inside the diamond shapes white again. Then simply apply the beige only to the ribbing on the other white pot. The white paint will naturally age with time as well. I think you chose lovely pots, trellises and hardware for your door and am looking forward to part 2!
The pressure washing made a big difference!!! You inspired me to pressure wash my patio as well!! I think I like the pure white pots but the distressed looks good too!! Thank you for sharing!! 💐
I normally would love the grey detailing especially with your stone but when I saw your door I think the white would be such an elegant contrast! I loved this video! Very soothing to watch and your creativity inspires.
I agree. Especially if considering a “cottage garden” effect - which will look stunning. Perfect area to sit and enjoy the sunshine, sipping Pimms!! Whatever your decision, you’ll make the right choice and enjoy. 🍹
Hi Nicolas, I prefer the white pot because it offers contrast to the grey stones and when you put your plants inside, it will blend with an air of quite class much like you. The front door looks great. I can not wait until next week to see how much more you accomplish.
The all white is quite lovely, fresh and clean looking!! Try it for this year and then maybe switch it out next time!! Once you have your plants and greenery, the white will really pop! Enjoy!
Grey detailing so pretty. All white seems kind of stark. Love watching you. So calm & relaxing. Blessed with a beautiful voice. You make everything so special. Make your life special. Love how you always say. Just what I was looking for. After you make a decision. So many people can’t decide on things. Then not happy with what they chose. It’s a gift. Sure brings on much happiness & peace. Will be happy to see upcoming videos. You are an inspiration.
I love your patio make over, I distress furniture often and love the shabby chic look. I start off with dark color, like the gray and then add white over the top . Then use a dry rough sponge or lite sandpaper to scrap off some of the white. It seems easier then doing the white first. The gray will show through where you want it. Some times I put black then another color, then white and scrape one or in places two layers and it looks really old and “chippy”. Then clear coat over so
Hi Nicolas, you’re fun to watch. I can see your wheels turning. A mere suggestion; use the original linen grey for the base and brush the white on the trellis design on the pots as a nod to the arched trellises that you purchased. It will have a slightly stronger contrast but will pick up the beautiful surrounding grey walls. I want a cookie! I love your toppings in your last video and this one. It makes the treats even more inviting.
Yes being outdoors makes you happy. Something in your videos is soul nourishing. One day you are going to be blessed with a huge garden. Keep up the great job!
I think that the grey distressed pot fits in very well. Looking forward to seeing your garden area evolve. I use Annie Sloan all the time to paint some of the furniture we sell at our Antique/vintage outlet and I agree with you . It’s brilliant, beautiful colours, simple to use and hard wearing. You can be creative and use it many ways . Not sponsored either !
I really loved how you added the grey. It blends with the stone and your focus will be on the trees not the pots as you mentioned earlier. I truly enjoy watching your videos they are always so enjoyable. 💗💗💗💗💗
I have so been looking forward to your patio series! The pressure washer made such a difference in removing all the debris. Your cookies turned out beautifully 😍
The white color is a nice contrast and over time the weather will naturally give it a greyish tone.Your cookies look absolutely amazing and delicious! Love the color of the door too.😊💛
I love the look of the aged pot, but after you painted your door, the all white would be my first choice. I can’t wait to see what else you do with your garden area. Those cookies were so pretty, and looked delicious! ❤️😊
Regarding the pots, I think I would like to see them painted grey with the white highlights. The pots would match the stone but the white would add interest and tie in with the trim work. Love the video.
Hello Nicolas. Both pots are pretty. I think the white, however, will add a bit of brightness in the courtyard without "blinding" you. The plants will still shine as the main interest. Also, as it ages the white will fade and as algae obviously does well in your garden the pots will naturalize with the algae...which I really like on terracotta pottery. So that's my 2 cents worth. PS LOVE your cookies!
Thanks for another great video. I once read that what we like in decor is contrast, therefore I like the white pots for your garden. You can also use white and pastels in the garden flowers and your dining area. Can't wait until next week!
Thank you, Nicolas, for such a great video. I think the pots with the grey finish will blend in better with your surroundings. I can't wait to see the evolution of your garden in the weeks to come. Everything you do is inspiring and beautiful. From the USA, Gabriel.
Lovely 🌹🌹ok so I think you should paint both pots white then do as bunny Guinness does to age terracotta and paint live yoghurt onto the pots to encourage lichen growth ☺️
All the changes you have made have really made a difference. I prefer the gray tinted pot instead of the solid white and the door looks amazing. I'm going to try your cookies for a bake sale, as I have bananas in the freezer.... mashed and ready to use! Can't wait for part 2 garden video. Thank you for the fun ideas!!
I love the idea of seating under the arch. It’s always good to have shelter, as you say from the rain but also from the heat of the sun. I agree with your initial thoughts - the white pot is very chic. Also, I admire how confident you are with your decisions and reasoning for them - I have huge difficulty making decisions over house and garden design!! Adding something about the pots - The all white will soon age and take on different tones without adding a grey paint effect.
You are very talented good that your doing the work yourself liked all the pots keep up the good work it's a good way to try and get over your parting from friend love the video hope to see more thanks
So enjoyed this video wanted it to go onall evening, both pots are lovely ,but I think the white.Just cannot wait until next week, but so admire how you never seem to get into a mess whenever you paint.Have a great week.
Hello Nicholas! They both look nice, however, what I do is paint the entire clay pot with a soft warm grey (Watered down), and then add the white accents on top to settle into the lower spots, and soften the grey. You can even do a clear wax at this stage, then your soft white on top, which allows you to manipulate the paint a bit more. It then looks like aged concrete. You can also then add your soft green to the bottom like you normally do. Ok, now back to watch the rest of the video…😀
I like the grey detailing. It gives the rusty look that blend with the building color. Completely white, may seem a bit "too loud" under a darker outdoor background , unless you placed them indoor.
Hello everyone - thank you so much for all of the responses with regards to the painted pots. I have to say, I am still no further forward to making a decision as it seems there is a 50/50 split between the pure white and aged pot! Thanks for your help and I will keep you updated! N
They both look great flip a coin ,Nick ....
The pots would age. I think painting the pots is stupid.

I would paint the upper part of the internal border too, to avoid the orangey.
I agree, the white, even though too white, is somehow chic, making a sort of an elegant contrast with all the grey around
Definitely the clean white, simple, & chic. Let Mother Nature herself manage the aging of the pots.
I really like the pot with the grey, it gives the pot a more Vintage Look
I do too.
I like the grey “aged” look more. But I would definitely paint the inside of the pots as well (at least the top part) so that it’s not obvious that they were the terracotta orange colour originally

Great idea with the black pot, white flowers and green. I am gonna do this.
Brilliant - the black would be elegant and a lovely contrast

All white for both pots!
I vote for the gray detailing. It will blend well with the patio's palette.
I would tone down the second one also. Stark white really doesn’t go with the beautiful aging of the whole area. Can’t wait to see the finished area.
The gray detailing. The power washing made a world of difference.. There is something so satisfying about power washing. Hi Sophie!
I like the pure white-nice and clean and crisp-let the foliage, trees, etc. take center stage!!
Marketplace is the perfect place for finding garden bargains, wonderful planters and statues at good value prices. Looking forward to seeing your courtyard garden take shape.
I think the grey detail is more interesting than the plain white.
Nicolas, I think it's a very nice idea to let the viewers choose the color of the plant pots.

Ahhh, but the All White pot is so chic, clean, and pretty for spring! That would be my pick! xoxo
I much prefer the aged look on the pots, it blends so much better with the stone of the building. Will you do the same look to the window boxes?

I really like the light gray as it blends beautifully with the stone outside. I think the white pot is a big too stark.
To blend with the stone outside, it might have been better to paint the pots grey and then detail with white.
The door looks stunning in the new colour, and I think I prefer the plain white for the pot. Looking forward to part 2!
I love the white pot; it is elegant, chic, and classy.
I like the simplicity of the white pot. And you can pick up that theme with other accessories. Or in the leaves or slowers.
Definitely the rustic effect, it looks amazingly chic.
I would have never considered this concrete area to be a garden but now I am very excited to see its transformation!
I feel the white pots would look lovely and bright, ready for greenery or beautiful spring flowers it will brighten all the stone in the courtyard! Whatever you decide will be just perfect!
I love the rustic look to the pot. Blends so much better w/the environment. You have such a talent for design. I just love your projects!

I personally prefer it just white Nicholas, once the green plant is in it will look absolutely stunning against your brickwork
I just painted my bath panels in Farrow and Ball Drop Cloth and I am thrilled with the results, pigment in their colours is on another level.
I love that you’ve made your home your own. You have such classic style. Thank you for your time.
I like rustic, anything aged and antiqued. That grey detailed pot is perfect ☺️

I like it with the gray detail. Even a little more gray! 🌷
Love the door colour and those cookies looked fantastic. Can’t wait until you show us more of your garden and plantings.
Hello Nicolas. Both pots are pretty. I think the white, however, will add a bit of brightness in the courtyard without "blinding" you. The plants will still shine as the main interest. My vote, Grey with the white. Both are great. Your choice.
I prefer the grey detailed pot. It will be interesting to follow you as you build your garden, and I’m certain it will be lovely.

Lovely 🌹🌹ok so I think you should paint both pots white then do as bunny Guinness does to age terracotta and paint live yoghurt onto the pots to encourage lichen growth ☺️
I think so . Live yogurt and a little mud will encourage a beautiful aged look%
Vanessa, what a wonderful idea ! Thank you for sharing it. I’d long forgotten about using live yogurt. 😊👍
Grey with white, looking great. Awesome taste, USA

I didn’t think I would but I love the grey and white
I’d go with the pot with the grey accent, just blends in nicely with the stone
Grey mix blends in well with the hard scape elements and plants and flowers 💐 will provide the color.
Can’t wait to the result(s)!
Now that you have painted your door, I believe the grey pots will complement your patio/garden area. Those cookies are so beautiful. Yum. :)
Go all white. Love it and then watch it slowly turn rustic over the years. Best of both worlds. You are such fun to watch 💕💕💕
Can't wait to see your new garden. Looks great so far.
I like the rustic treatment to the planter pot
Paint both pots grey! I think you'll be happy with that once it's done :)
I like the grey detailing. It gives the rusty look that blend with the building color. Completely white, may seem a bit "too loud" under a darker outdoor background , unless you placed them indoor.
