      @@RailRelaxation In Chile, we used to have an interesting railway network (although not as intricate and complex as Argentina's). For example, from 1914 through 1975 we had the Ferrocarril Longitudinal Norte (we friendly called it "Longino") which ran from central Chile to the northern city of Iquique. It crossed the Atacama Desert! It took passengers about 4 days to get to their destination. We also used to have the Ferrocarril Transandino, which crossed the Andes mountain range and connected us with Mendoza (Argentina) and then Retiro station in Buenos Aires. Would you imagine yourself here, making videos like yours if you had a time machine?

    • @RailRelaxation
      @RailRelaxation  Рік тому

      @SouthernSoul2014 for sure I would love to film those lines...time machine would be great....but, anyway, I have a plan to go to South America and film lines around there. Can you give me some ideias of lines that are still operating? It is possible that I will go to Chile too.

      @@RailRelaxation Well, in Chile railways are operated by EFE which is divided into 4 branches: (1) EFE Valparaiso which is in charge of Metro de Valparaíso, a service that connects the port of Valparaíso, the touristy city of Viña Del Mar and other cities in Valparaiso Region. (2) EFE Central which is in charge of the suburban service between Santiago and Nos, and the services Santiago-Rancagua and Santiago-Chillán (both cities in central-southern Chile). (3) EFE Sur which operates the Biotrén (a service that has 2 lines in the city of Concepción and surrounding cities and towns, with a 3rd line to be built soon); and the service between the cities of Temuco-Victoria. (4) EFE Arica which operates the Chilean segment of the line between Arica (the northernmost Chilean city) and La Paz (Bolivia), this line used to transport passengers in the past and it crosses the impressive altiplano (a high plateau in the Andes) to reach the Bolivian capital. In Chile, the railways tracks from Santiago to the south are 1,676 (Indian gauge), while the tracks from La Calera (which used to be the starting point of the "Longino" train) are 1,000. In the past, Chile had the Longitudinal Sur service which ran from Santiago (Alameda Station) to the city of Puerto Montt in the far southern region of Los Lagos. In Santiago, there was another station called Mapocho (a really beautiful one, please check photos here on the Internet) which provided a service between Santiago and the port of Valparaíso. Halfway in this line, there were 2 stations: Llay-Llay, where a branch line connected to the city of Los Andes which was the start of the Transandino (train that crossed the Andes mountains and reached Mendoza and Buenos Aires in Argentina); the second station was La Calera which was the head of the Longitudinal Norte, an incredibly long line that reached the far northern city of Iquique (this trip took about 4 days!). The service between Santiago and Valparaíso was closed in 1992 but years later the segment between the cities of Limache and Valparaíso was renewed to create the Metro de Valparaíso. In the past, lots, lots of branches started at different points of these longitudinal services (northern and southern, here we call them "ramales"), the only surviving one nowadays is Ramal Talca-Constitución, a picturesque service between the southern city of Talca and the coastal resort of Constitución. In the north, there is another peculiar railway service between the cities of Arica (Chile) and Tacna (Peru). In Santiago, another railway service is being built between this city and the cities of Melipilla and Talagante, reviving an old "ramal" that existed from Alameda Station to the nearby port of San Antonio and the resort of Cartagena -this service will be called Melitrén.

      I have been to Argentina and learned about their former and current railway network. Argentina is a much larger country so, believe me, their past railway network was impressive. Impressive!!! There used to be trains to everywhere! They used to have long-distance services that connected to other countries in this region. At present, most of that network is dismantled but there's an intricate remnant (very interesting, for sure) in Buenos Aires. They have 4 main big stations where you can take trains to many, many towns in the Buenos Aires province. There's also a "long distance" service to their coastal resort city of Mar Del Plata. Buenos Aires has one the the biggest railway stations in the world: Constitución, which has 16 platforms. The other main one is Retiro, which is actually three!!! big stations one next to the other (each originally from a different company).

    Thank you for a great ride. That's not one of the usual routes in Central Europe (swiss, germany, austria, france). What I have noticed. The platforms are extrem narrow and with zero comfort. The passangers have to walk over the railway track and wait there. At one station there is waiting a train direct nearby on the same track. Here in germany, if there are people on the track, it will closed immediately. Crazy.

    • @ADPRailVideoChannel
      @ADPRailVideoChannel Рік тому +3

      Sorry if my comment is very long :
      Class 240 electric locomotives (formerly known as class S 499.0) were originally built by Škoda with the maximum speed set to 120km/h, particularly because the then ČSD (Československé státní dráhy a.k.a Czechoslovak State Railways) defined 120km/h as the max speed for trains on trunk railway lines (including those in southern part, which were electrified with 25kV 50Hz AC).
      ČSD did ordered 25 additional units of these locomotives to Škoda in 1970, and they were fitted with modified traction motors to allow them running as fast as 140km/h. Due to this, they were assigned new number that was known as S 499.1, allowing ČSD to differentiate them from earlier 120 units classified as S 499.0 (which are original locomotives that could run only up to 120km/h). However, they were later downgraded by ČSD (in term of its max speed) and incorporated into class S 499.0 (as S 499.0121 to S 499.0145) in 1978 due to lack of track section that enabled them to accelerate up to 140km/h.
      When Kryšpín numbering system then used by ČSD was officially abolished on December 31st, 1987 in favor of UIC numbering system (the current ones), both original S 499.0 and former S 499.1 locomotives were unified as class 240. The original S 499.0 that comprised S 499.0001 to S 499.0120 were renumbered as 240.001 to 240.120, whereas ex-S 499.1 (S 499.0121 to S 499.0145) became 240.121 to 240.145.
