  • In this episode, I explore what a powerful and monolithic impact one dedicated teacher can have in the life of a student, and the beautiful experience of tracking that teacher down and letting him or her know what a wonderful influence they had on you-- even half a century later!

I remember my third grade teacher Mrs. Kaye. Our whole class loved her so much at the end of the year we all stood on line so we could kiss her goodbye! She also read to us and taught us about the world around us and our little town too. We did plays and puppet shows with her, so much fun. She read us Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little!

Mrs. Hardwick read us those same two books as well! Probably standard fare for that age group at that time-- but having a teacher read to us; life changing! Do they still do that? Or is there no time allotted in their lesson plan protocols dictated by administrators? Education sure has changed. I'm so glad I went to school when, and where, I did!

This is an amazing story! It just goes to show how much of an impact a person can have on your life without them even knowing.

It really does, doesn't it?! Thanks for commenting! There'll be more stories like this coming, too... I got a million of 'em!

In or around 1995 my then wife and i visited my 1st grade hometown in N.C. We looked up my teacher (some 32 years later) and visited in her home. She claimed to have remembered me. Miss Mary Kathryn. Cheers, friend.

Loved loved LOVED this story. Thanks Scott! I can think of a few high school teachers that impacted my life, or just the way I think about myself. Miss Prouty, for taking me aside, one on one, and forcing me to understand basic math. Mr. French, because he was so good at teaching Spanish and made me love it. Mrs. Farmer, for teaching me to sew (and you know how far reaching that became in my life!). -Sharon

No doubt about it, teachers have a huge impact on our lives. The following year, the first year we went to Peterborough Middle School (PMS, haha), for 5th grade, I had Mrs. Warren, who was just HORRIBLE. I cried every day having to deal with her meanness and overt, spiteful, vindictive attitude towards children. All I wanted to do was go back to Greenfield and have Mrs. Hardwick or Mrs. Gagnon or Mrs. Winslow. But then 6th grade was pretty cool, after that. I guess we've got to have a balance of sorts, in everything, right?

Great story. I love how you tied each of them together regarding your early days in school and then your senior year.
I have a couple of suggestions but will PM those to you.

I only had Ms. Hardwick from March to the end of 4th grade. That’s the year we moved to Greenfield, 73’ the year we met.
I knew when you said a tall kid who you were referring too.
I remember Mrs. Hardwick was quite lenient and let us move our desks around a lot! Also she read to us James and the Giant Peach! I thought that was a very cool story!

"Charlotte's Web," "Trumpet of the Swan"... she had an AMAZING voice for reading. And still does. Except for gray hair, she hasn't changed a bit!

Hi Scott! I never knew Miss Hardwick since I spent most of my childhood in Connecticut. I did, however, know Mr Aldrich. He was one of my favorites. I remember the memory machine. He would shorten the length of time we could see the numbers to just a blink! Thanks for the memories today. Keep it up!!

Years later, when I was a cop, I developed a technique to practice the same thing-- I found that as cars come toward me at night, there's a split second (depending on speed) where the car is close enough to you that you're not staring into the headlights, but it's still close enough to catch the briefest of glimpses of the number plate. Probably in large part due to Mr. Aldrich, I rather easily got to a point where I could read the entire front number plate of a car at night, passing me in the opposite direction! I still do it once in a while, just for fun!

Loved this! Editing is sooo much better than the 1st one. I really think you should have explained that initially you grew your hair for your wife! I love watching you be an old softie! Such a wonderfully sentimental day with someone I felt I knew b/c you talked about her so much, and my former co-worker!

Yes, and the editing should, I believe, get even better when I get the more versatile DaVinci editing system figured out.

    Beautiful story..Story telling becomes you..
Not everyone can tell stories well. Maybe tell more?

Thank you! That's the plan. I'd ultimately like to get to a point where I can tell a story WHILE I'm building or constructing something. But there's something nice about a campfire chat-- I hope to do a lot of those. Similar to the first episode (Hope vs. False Hope) where I do some work and show some progress on my property/cabin, and then sit down and have a "porch chat!"

Reading opend the door's to educate education and the only limits are personal motivation,
    That might explain something.

We were so privileged to grow up in that town, and have THAT school, when we did. Mrs. Gagnon, Mrs. Hardwick, Mrs., Mrs. Winslow...

Hey Scott, great story! How’d the repair of Heathers guitar turn out? 😃

    • @ScottatPorchPulse
      @ScottatPorchPulse  6 місяців тому +1

Thanks! The head stock is repaired, and I'm letting it cure-- both the glue and the lacquer-- for a good 2-3 weeks before I start putting it back together. Watch for "Part 2" coming soon!
