- Well, due to some bizarre life circumstances, it's going to be a month or two before I can get back up to my mountainside property for "front porch" topics or wilderness survival and cabin construction discussion. So I decided to invite you all to share in another hobby of mine... lutherie! Join me as I attempt a repair to a dreaded fell-from-a-tripod-stand-and-snapped-the-headstock-clean-off nightmare! Let's see if I can work the necessary magic to bring it back to functional status again.
Nice work Scotty me lad.
Thank you!
That's what had happened to my Washburn some years ago. I was fortunate to get it repaired in such a way that it lasted several more years. It broke a second time, and didn't last as long, but I did get some mileage out of it. By the time it broke again, it was dead for good.
Thanks for sharing this. It's fascinating to watch how this is done.
Thanks, Joe! And yeah, often when a repair of this nature is made, because of the catastrophic aspects of the cross-grain fracturing, one repair is about all you get. If it breaks again... well, I've never been asked to do a second repair, but I'm assuming it would have marginal chances of success, at best. But if I ever get a chance to do a secondary head stock repair, I'll take it and give it a shot, just for you! See if I can come up with a creative solution!
@@ScottatPorchPulse I've got a 12 string with that break. Not worth fixing, though. It's a Seagull, didn't sound that great to begin with! I keep it because my son and his wife painted the top (making the sound quality even worse!) But it's purty.
I just looked up Seagull guitars. This would have been worth saving once upon a time. Damn.
@@kaisersrock I could probably do the repair for around $100, B. We can work a deal if (when!) I end up doing that parlor guitar restoration for you. Peace...
I had the misfortune of this happening to a beautiful Guild years ago.. I had no Luthier available and the guitar was given away when I was packing for a deployment in the Marine Corps.. Look forward to how this turns out.. Thanks for the video..
Guilds are wonderful. I don't get why they're not more popular. I had an all maple jumbo Guild--- an F-40 maybe? F-45? Can't remember, but it was a flat top, with an arched back. The thing just BOOMED... and man did it have nice mid tones. I don't have the best ear when it comes to sound, but this rang like a tuning fork. I'm sorry that happened to your guitar... someone got a very lucky gift there! Stay tuned... in a couple of weeks I'll post the follow up, but that glue needs to cure a good two weeks. Subscribe and hit the notification bell... you should get notified when I post "phase II" of this repair. Thanks so much-- for watching, for subscribing (if you have already), commenting, and mostly, for your service in The Corps.
Every proper guitarist has an Altoids tin nearby!
Ah! You noticed that, eh?! I use them for TONS of stuff... mainly for camping applications. Put a rubber band around 'em and toss 'em in the backpack!
