Forgiveness doesn't free the wicked from their evil deeds. Rather, it frees the wounded, allowing their lives more peace. Thank you Sir for a lovely narration.
This audiobook is a true Dickensian gem. The story of Richard Doubledick, with its themes of redemption and hope, is beautifully brought to life. It's a perfect story for the holiday season.
That’s wonderful! I’m so glad you tuned in. This is an excerpt from The Seven Poor Travellers that also featured on its own as a Christmas edition in a magazine of the time. ❤️
I'm glad you enjoyed the story! It's truly amazing how love and forgiveness can transform lives, isn't it? Charles Dickens had such a remarkable way of capturing human emotions. What do you think is the most powerful message we can take away from this story?
I never read Dickens until I retired. I saw several versions of The Christmas Carol and the movie, A Tale of Two Cities. They seemed okay. However, when I read these stories. I was amazed by his craftsmanship and his beautifully conceived stories. He is now one of my favorite authors. This story, so beautifully narrated, added to my favorable impressions of Mr.Dickens. Thank you for this.
It may sound corny but for many Christmases I had a tradition of re-reading "A Christmas Carol" every year because each year I seemed to associate with a different character. Dickens is a giant!
It's wonderful to hear how reading Dickens after retirement opened up a whole new appreciation for his work. His ability to weave deep, meaningful stories is truly remarkable. Do you have a favorite character or moment from any of his works that really stood out to you? It’s always interesting how certain themes or scenes resonate differently with each reader.
A big thank you for this audiobook. 'The Poor Traveller' is a story that resonates deeply, and your narration has made it even more impactful. The combination of Dickens' words and your voice is a perfect match, making for an unforgettable listening experience.
I agree! It is 1 a.m., can't sleep, just found this and listened for 15 seconds and am thrilled. Excellent narration, Charles Dickens, I just hit gold. Thank you So much.
Richard double Dick being a drunk and on the ropes was truly blessed to gain a Mentor father figure and best friend, a mother, a wife, and a perfect life. This tale is fast moving and every word and sentence counts. Well done Sir Charles Dickens and well read Sir Elliot.
I really appreciate your reading of this wonderful Dickens story. I had never inown this story before. Your reading is very timeless, well paced and thoroughly memorable. Thank you!
I am fond of Dickens, brilliant writer!!!! It’s hard to find good narration but you are so very pleasurable to listen to. I subscribed so I can listen with my cuppa. You have given me great pleasure, thank-you.
How good reading is! In all of history, no book has been read as much as the Bible. Below, I share a summary and recommend the full reading. God bless them! "Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14.6 NIV
I have a brain injury and a disability that make it hard to sit through thinga this long. I got through all of this. Dickens wwas truly something special
Foudn this by accident, whilst trying to beat the midnight deadline and complete my 2023 Goodreads book challenge. What a wonderful story, and a lovely new chanel to subscribe to. How talented you are. Thankyou
The most powerful think in a mans life is to choose peace and being at peace with those who wrong you and trying to do right. As it is said, All wars are holy war's; because we are fighting different things we hold dear. Indeed, forgiveness is divine 🙏
I have greatly enjoyed many of His novels, so I cannot complain that a few of his short stories were clinkers. Oh well, it is bravely and well narrated. Good work, man.
A request: You might read "Tattercoats", an English fairy tale collected by Joseph Jacobs in his More English Fairy Tales, or other works in this collection. Thank you again for your fine narrations. A pleasure to listen.
I really want to get to the beauty of this story that these comments elude to. I am, however, struggling to get past the first few minutes because he has said "Private Richard Doubedick" so many times, not to mention the hole which he spent so much time in. I shall press on, with faith that the depth of Dickens will overshadow my childish mind! 🤦♀️😅
Thank you, this is another Charles Dickens short story that was hitherto unfamiliar to me. I wonder if anyone with better historical knowledge than mine can enlighten me on the last remark about the sons Doubledick and the French officer fighting side-by-side? Does anyone know which conflict Dickens was referring to? (If he had lived 50 years later, I would have thought he meant WW1!)
Thank you for listening, Katy. It’s a really lovely story, similar to his redemption tales more well known to us, but without the supernatural element. Incidentally I believe the conflict which the sons would have fought in was probably the Crimean War (1853-1856) as allies against Russia.
isnt it funny...its just what i needed...the gift of forgiveness...love and privacy...the world doesnt need to know...kia ora...all the way from aotearoa(nz)
That’s wonderful to hear, thanks so much. I’m looking to come to NZ in the next few years so it’s great to know the stories are making their way so far!
@@classicaudiobookswithelliot hi E, the Dean of Canterbury did a live reading of 🎨TPP 3 years ago (if you didn’t already know). Endearing to see!- but I’d still like to hear your version. A tale of such haunting beauty and convoluted wonder. At the point where he gets stranded, it starts to feel like a shaggy-dog story, funny- then one is promptly thrown into unfolding layers of the uncanny. The forgiveness did Christ cleanse you of your sins but of course you have to repent and try not to commit again. The lord knows your heart.
