Catification: Designing a Happy and Stylish Home for Your Cat (and You!) shop.jacksongalaxy.com/products/catification-designing-a-happy-and-stylish-home-for-your-cat-and-you
Hey Jackson, love watching cats from he'll over here in the UK lol. I'm getting a kitten tomorrow & yes, I have a power recliner sofa, which you have just said don't get if you have a cat lol. Can you suggest any ideas to stop him from going exploring inside it. I was thinking about spraying inside there with a lavender spray. Would that work? Also his current mommy said that he as just left his mum & brothers & sister 2-3 weeks ago & he likes to chew doors, walls, furniture, & cables. I was going to try & find a trainer for him but do you know what the best way to stop him from doing this as I have a very smart home with a hell of a lot of cables & some of the steps you've said are not going to be practical for my home, also she said he bites & scratches a bit. Any advice that you can give would be extremely appreciated. All the best & hope you enjoy the rest of your week. Brian from Birmingham UK.
@@crakedispelo6498 are you thinking about a kitten or an adult cat? Either way please go to your local animal shelter. 💙💙💙 Spend time with the cats that you think you are interested in. If you spend time with several of the cats believe me one of them will choose you and you will have a very happy fur baby! 😺😻😽 Also Jackson is 100% correct about adopting two. Talk to the shelter volunteers and if they have a bonded pair. A bonded pair are sometimes hard to adopt out because a lot of people already have pets. So there you go please adopt don't shop and spend time with a bonded pair. If you do this you will be my superhero! Please keep in touch and let us know.
@@smokieandenzo one thing that will really help with the issues he's having, adopt one of the brothers or sisters as well. They will play and wear each other out plus the benefit of having two is that as kittens they learn from each other that biting each other too hard hurts 😸💙💙
For emergencies, I have trained all my animals, cats included to come every single time I say "treat" - they come even when frightened and I am so very thankful. They always get a treat when they come - we practice every couple of days to the response sharp.
Years ago my cat escaped from my apartment. I wasn't even aware until my neighbour knocked on my door. He had been relaxing watching TV when his Christmas tree began to shake, the poor man nearly had a heart attack. Slowly and stealthily my ginger cat made her way down the tree much to the relief of my neighbour.
Sounds like a setup for the "gotcha!" of a Doctor Who Christmas special.... :D That poor neighbor. I could see how that would shake anyone up. -- Good thing it was your cat and not a raccoon, squirrel, or something more...temperamental! :D
Just had to evacuate my cat two nights ago. The carbon monoxide alarms went off in the middle of the night, so I immediately got her carrier out and she loves playing in it so she goes right in. I also encouraged her with treats to go in it when she was a young kitten. I thanked myself for doing that, as she was zipped safely in her carrier in about 15 seconds and we got outside quickly. The fire dpt came and luckily did not detect any CO, said we have a faulty detector, but now I know that I’d be able to easily get her in her carrier in a real emergency.
That's so good. I had lightning ⚡ hit the house.everything is fine but the cats now hit with thunder. I've been putting them in the stroller near me when they get frightened. So now they go to the stroller when scared. It helps.
I was told by the fire department to have carriers on my balcony ready - just in case of fire as they can’t enter through the building to get the animals if it’s dangerous! Please keep carriers on your balconies for each one of your pets at all times !
Beware of fridges! When my cat was a kitten she snuck in there and was locked in for several minutes before we heard her screaming and opened it back up. It sounds silly but it happens.
When I had had my senior cat a few years past kitten hood, and thought we had all the major kinks worked out of exploring, boy, did I get a surprise one day. I had been cleaning out the fridge, then put in some food I'd cooked. So the fridge had been open a few times. I thought I was being careful. I had my back turned a time or two. I finished and went back to work in the rest of the house. A few minutes go by. "That's funny, where's my cat?" He would usually hang out with me when I went to my desk or bedroom. I checked the house, calling. No cat. What on earth? I had not been outside, so I knew he was in somewhere. Finally, I remembered the fridge and checked. By then, it had been several minutes. There he was, confused but not worried, and out he got, as if no problem. -- That truly worried me. I don't know how long he could've lasted in there. It would be dark and cold, above freezing. I would think the oxygen would run out. I did not hear him meow even once, with me calling and everything. Did he meow and I couldn't hear him from in there? Did he not meow while in danger, because he wasn't/t worried yet? Scary. He did not tear things up or have an accident. (Oh, I checked!) Thankfully, he/s never done it again. I just looked at him and cocked my head and told him don't do that, eh could've gotten hurt. It was too big a mistake and too worrisome to get too upset with him, but it shook me up. I spent extra time with him that afternoon. -- And I wonder if we'd hear it if a cat or a little kid or a dog got in a refrigerator. I would expect an older kid or adult could kick their way out unless the door was jammed. So very glad my cat was OK. I don't know how long he was in there, all told. But I could've had a seriously hurt or dead cat that way, if I hadn't/t checked as soon as I noticed he was missing. He is otherwise usually bright. Why, kitty cat? Why? Still love him dearly. That's been years ago now.
Yes, I'm very cautious when I open my fridge. My kitty is very curious and a lot of times when I have it opened, she's looking in there like she wants to jump in. I could actually see her doing that with her personality. So fridges is something that I'm very careful with. Especially since not only is it cold in there, but they could run out of air within a few minutes.
Yes! It once happened to a friend of mine. She could hear her cat meowing but it took a little while before she realised he was in the fridge. Thankfully he was ok. This was years ago, but it still makes me shudder to think about.
-Please add the dangers of rocking chairs, the importance of silverware facing down in the dishwasher (especially knives), bags with handles, and that covered trash cans in both the kitchen and bathroom.
I’m a pet sitter and once a cat I was sitting was exploring my canvas tote bag and became twisted in the handles. He was freaking out, banging on the walls trying to escape. I got him out but he was weirded out afterwards. In fact, he was hostile to the other cat. I sat with them a long time afterwards until calm was restored.
I get annoyed with people who put knives in the drying rack pointy side up because it’s dangerous for people, too. Either wash and dry and put them away by hand, or put the blasted points down.
I lay my knives or other pointy utensils under other dishes in the drying rack as an extra precaution because my kitten is extra curious I've seen him try to get in the rack to sniff stuff.
Getting my cat lectures in before I get my kitten in two months Update: getting my baby, Sushi, the 20 of August ❤ Update: got my baby 3th of August as a surprise. Can't explain the love I'm feelings to this baby. I guess love really is multiplied and not divided.
Same here. I’ve not had a feline for a while due to the resident dog. Once said pup heads to the rainbow bridge - his 19, I’m getting a cat, probably a Bengal. Thus lots of catification is required.
I've never been this excited for anything ever, I recently moved out and don't have any friends and due to covid campus is locked too so i dont meet anyone. I realised I'm an adult now and can therefore get the cat I've always wanted (but mom got me snails instead lol) so I decided to adopt a kitten and here I am excited to scoop poop and change my entire place.
I have a whole cat proofing checklist I go through before I leave the house but it’s all worth it. I can’t even leave clothes out on my bed because my cat will eat any string coming off of it. Simple things like that for keeping my evil boi safe
Tip: If you have pot plants, especially bigger ones, you can put big rocks over the soil in the pot. This makes it impossible for a cat to move them to get to the soil. The rocks also do look quite nice 👍
I'd also recommend putting stones inside the bottom of the pot, then soil and your plant, then more stones. This way it doesn't exclusively move the center of gravity up to the top of the pot, which ironically enough ends up making it more likely that the whole thing will tip over. 😊
It works well to feed some greens to your cat like chopped up kale or even cat grass or a food with greens for indoor cats. It’s worked great with every cat I’ve ever had to get them to leave my plants alone!
@@catcolb11yeah, I grow cat grass near my cat’s play place and cat nip is hidden away at my office until it’s needed. It’s used for getting my girl calm at the vet for her check ups. She gets excited now and doesn’t need sedatives for shots and such. I highly recommend all cat owners to use nip sparingly as a healthier way to handle more unpleasant things like taking them to vets and groomers.
Good tips! We have 2 seniors.. Just adopted a 13 year old girl cat from our local shelter, we also have a 14 year old boy cat we've had since he was 8 weeks old. I would encourage anyone to adopt a senior cat. They are so loving and for the most part are passed all the craziness a kitten can bring.
That is true. I never worry about my older cats, but my little kitty drives me up the wall. She gets into things I never thought a cat could get into. My other 2 older ones never really got into much even when they were kitties. But my little Missy, gets into everything. Everybody always wants kittens. Although nothing is cuter than a kitten, nothing is more frustrating than a kitten either. I love her to death, but I do worry on a daily basis about what she will get into next.
Agreed. Just “rented” (oh hell, ya never “own” a cat!) a senior who had been in the shelter far too long. I am now truly a cliche: The Old Widow Broad™️ with the Old Cat. (But just one....so ffaarrr...!)
The sweetest cats I've ever had were a couple of seniors my partner and I have. I'm sure we were spared MANY headaches just because of how chill our lil guys are. Unfortunately one of them passed a few months back, but his partner is still going strong! And he's still got the loudest meow I've ever heard lmao
Art supplies! Especially any wet media. Even if you're using nontoxic materials, it's still a pain. Washing gesso off a cat's leg or following a trail of green paw prints on your carpet to find a cat you need to bathe is miserable for everyone involved. 😭
For any tall IKEA furniture, there are included fasteners that you must attach your furniture to the wall with. You can even go to any IKEA store and receive these kits for free. I guess you DO get what you pay for.
The problem is too many people don’t know how to anchor furniture properly. IKEA gives the kits to people because they were found guilty by the US government of having furniture that was killing small kids. They could solve the whole issue by creating furniture that meets the standards for not tipping, which are the simplest standards to meet (can it resist tipping if 50lbs is placed on any shelf or drawer). It would take the most minor modifications in design for the furniture to resist tipping.
I made 1 simple alteration to the structure of my cat tower which should have initially been done by the designers & thats to have a wider base! If the top & bottom are the same width, towering 1800mm high of cf course its going to topple as soon as the cat or cats climb it especially if their in full play mental mode!! It dosnt need to be much of a add on, ive got prob about 130mm all round & to blend it with the tower itself i got some offcut carpet & put that between the tower base & the new base, it looks like it came like that, also didn't like the idea of a strap half way up the tower attaching to the wall, i can see it being a good way for them to neck themselves & surely it would restrict their full physco swinging acts goin up & down!!
The seismic anchors now come with IKEA furniture. They come with the accessories too. The last time I was setting up some BILLYs with the expansion cabinet, I had a bunch of leftover seismic anchors.
I don't think there is a way to completely cat proof your home unless you take everything out of your house and have an empty house. But then my kitty would still find something to get into. She is a handful but I do love her.
If there was nothing but my cat's toys in a room, he'd still instead chew on the carpet, the baseboards, dig at the door, then probably eventually rip one of his own toys apart.
You mentioned a lot about being able to get you cat in an emergency. Could you make an emergency video? Is there a way to do drills, or train a cat to go to you if the smoke detector goes off? I keep a large carrier out at all times and would actually love to teach my 3 fur babies to run there.
As someone mentioned somewhere here in the comments: use whatever sound your cats react to. It can be "Treats!", "Food!" or "Nyam nyam!", whatever works. They will run to you for a treat and then you can take them to safety.
I second this idea! But I'd also love advice on how to do training with my cat so that I can pick her up. In the event of an emergency or the vet this would be so helpful and while I'm thankful she doesn't scratch at me or anything the few times I've needed pick her up, she is constantly trying to wiggle away in a very unsafe way.
I lost a beautiful kitty in a fire. He ran into a closet and died from smoke inhalation. We couldn't find him anywhere. RIP Mr. Boots. I wish youtube was around back then.
I normally give my cats their wetfood in a steel plate so everytime I tap on the steel plate to make noises they come running towards me thinking it's wetfood time. so maybe u could try that :) hope this helps !
I'm a very new cat mom (I'm on day 5) and one thing I made sure was to plan my furnishing of the apartment around the cat. Yeah, it's small so I can only afford to have one litter box, however, it's a XXL covered one so he likes it quite a bit. I think he has adapted quite well to my place, I get home and not much is out of place. He has been eating more and since the beginning, he's been using his litter box just perfect. I love him already and can't wait to gain his trust. Of course, I'm always worried when I leave to work but that's because I'm just paranoid lol. I'm glad I found this channel! I want to be the best cat mom for my lil baby.
Same here, got my lil baby 3 days ago and was a surprise to say the least. I have to buy loads of cable proofing and all that and still learning h how to train her so this video is very helpful. All so new to being a cat mom myself 😅
@@Jiaeme put hot sauce on some of your wires. One and done lick and never again 😂 (dont actually do this haha buy some cat safe spray that is made for them to hate and stay away from)
I had a cat chase a mouse under my couch. The mouse found an opening in the fabric cover under it. So to escape my cat, it jumped into the hole. Of course, my cat followed the mouse. Then, they continued the chase among the springs of my couch. All the while, I am panicking, of course. At long last (2 minutes) my cat came out with the mouse, in his mouth.
I'm a senior who loves to read. You should consider having your books in large print. I know I appreciate how you make videos on most issues anyone can deal with their furbabies
As a senior if you live in the US, contact your county’s Office for the Aging or Public Health Service and they can provide you with full page size flat magnification sheets. No charge. Best wishes-and a county’s Office for the Aging is the best kept secret across the country. They have a bunch of resources and referrals for seniors.
I've learned this the hard way..my first cat died inside a sofa bed. I don't know how, maybe she suffocated. I was on vacation and left my cat to a friend. It happened the second day of a 10 days long holidays. I was abroad and coming back home and not finding her was devastating. It took me a long time to over come the pain and the guiltiness..I was unexperienced with cats, I loved her but I didnt know what was safe and unsafe...
I hope you have healed; it is not your fault. May you find healing and know that you saved that cat from a life on the streets/shelter. You rescued the cat and did the best you could with the information you had. Your cat forgives you and you should as well. Much love
Little tip for the crafters and people who sew: get a tool box to store your threads, needles and even fabric. Yes the tool box thats usually for construction tools, but the small, hard plastic ones come often with multiple compartments, a nice handle and with strong clamps to keep the box closed well. These things can come cheaper than storage boxes designed for storing sewing supplies, especially in terms of size and durability. And theyre easy to stack as well!
I've actually been thinking about how I want to store these items because my boy LOVES to chew my thread, to the point of banning him from my room. I appreciate the advice!
I have a friend, that told me a horror story that happened to her cat. She was sewing and the needle dropped on her carpet. She looked for that needle everywhere. She couldn't find it; then a few days later, her cat starting hiding in her closet. She knew that was not normal behavior for her cat. She took her cat to her vet. and he performed an x-ray. He found the needle up her cat's nose! The vet thankfully removed it. No harm to her cat, thank God, she took her cat to her vet! Now that I have a cat( Henry, I'm only allowed to have one cat) I'm so very careful about every room in my house. My cat is an indoor cat( due to a busy st. right outside my front door) so I purchased a window perch; as it is too cold to leave the window open during cold weather. Henry Loves it!! He also has a climbing post with a small "condo", scratching posts, climbing areas, toys that dangling, that are safe for Henry( came with the " condo" ) and several levels of climbing areas, but not high enough that I can reach Henry, in case of an emergency. Henry is the love of my life. I actually named him Henry, as that was my late son's nickname that I had for him. Henry( my cat) is the reason I get up every morning, to face a new day with Henry. P.S. Where I live, no pets allowed, but I have special permission from my landlord to have Henry.I ♥♥♥♥🐱🐱🐱 I Lovey Henry!!!😊🤗😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Curtains...blinds...light cords, cables, anything stringy. I just learned to unplug anything I didn't want the kittens to chew up and get electrocuted. Yes it was a pain for a bit, but eventually they grew out of that phase and the house was fine. I let them just explore yet I always followed them to see what they was into. Anything like q-tips and little things must be picked up. My senior cat just watched them play and then I put the kittens in a cat room for an hour and gave that time to my senior. It all worked out fine. Being a catdaddy is a full time job but awfully rewarding but always remember...patience! If you don't want them to get into things when your gone, put it away or unplug it. I also suggest to shut your windows and doors when your away. When your home with them you can train them to not get on them.
I was going to soon make a deposit for 2 Birman kittens but after watching your video I got cold feet that I am now taking this adoption thing a lot more seriously. I have built in shelves everywhere and some of the shelves are made out of glass and most of the stuff that I put on those shelves are breakable. So after seeing your video I toured my house and a lot of the things that you stated I had in full view from lite candles, gaps at the bottom of my kitchen cupboards and lower dishwasher, curtain cords, exposed soaps and colognes, loose cupboard doors that a cat could open, hide a bed with a bed frame, the inside of my wood burning fireplace, 3 plants that I don't know if they are toxic yet and I to leave things on counters, floors and tabletops. All of these things I noticed within the first 5 to 10 minutes of my tour. Thank you so very much for this video for I don't know what I would do if my negligence would end up harming one of my kittens . What scares me now is what I did not notice but I cannot go around being paranoid either.
if you don’t have handles on your cabinets I highly recommend these magnetic baby locks that you stick to the inside of your cabinet. Really good if you’re renting and can’t drill holes.
I just love everything about Jackson- his personality, aesthetics, how he explains stuff. I love cats and don't even own one (yet) but I still love to watch these videos just because of Cat Daddy!!
My boy is a pica explorer. When he discovered cords as a kitten I couldn’t afford the sprays and stuff but I did have a jar of vicks, I put a coat of that on the cable he hasn’t gone near them since. His thing is plastic bags to eat so I just don’t have any.
How did you know the cat had Pica? I’ve got a cat that REALLY likes plastic of any kind. I don’t know if it’s bc it crinkles or if it’s bc she actually wants to consume it bc I always take it from her before she gets a chance. But she doesn’t just bat them around. They’re always in her mouth if she can find them.
Awesome idea but vicks has the perfumes and chemicals that can poison that jackson says not to use -and vets. You CAN use an orange or orange peel, its natural, not poisonous to cats - they just dont like citrus fruits. At xmas put them around the bottom of the tree or as decoration on the bottom branches and your cats wont climb the tree :) 🐾
My cat hasnt been diagnosed with pica but this last year she keeps going for wires 👀 Going to use your tip and Jackson's cord hider tip, switch vicks for orange though. Has anyone found any flowers that aren't poison to cats. So many! I love Rose's and lilies but I love my cat more. Still would be nice to have some flowers occasionally.
I have open-wood stairs into my sitting room and a six-month-old lunatic. His favourite thing is to launch himself through the highest point possible and there's a sofa beneath it so he always gets a soft landing. Great for him. If I'm sitting there tho, I suddenly get a faceful of epileptic thistle at 90mph, frequently followed by a catnip banana or similar falling on my head. Sitting watching the telly has taken on a whole new level of terror!
I’m dealing with four kittens and these vids are really working! I did a slow blink and a hour later after some play and permission petting it slept with me for the first time and approached me on its own this channel is so helpful!
For my fellow kitten owners who have a low bed and you're waiting for your kitten to get big enough that they don't fit under the bed anymore, a very budget-friendly block for under your bed are pool noodles. My black baby girl Midnight would go under the bed with the clearance being maybe 1.75 inches tall. We knew that she would eventually get too big to go under, but we still wanted to block it out. We got a bunch of pool noodles (5-6 for a king size mattress) and they worked perfectly. They cut easily and you can squish them around the bed to block until your babies are too big to fit. Much more affordable than the super expensive bed blockers that I was looking at
I have had a migraine for 4 days now, and seeing a video from you has been the absolute highlight of my week. My Joanna is definitely a climber and an explorer, so have to pay attention to what we have on bookshelves and things that she likes to climb.
Oof just starting to recover from a 3.5 day long cluster migraine myself. I feel your pain. Take it easy and be as kind to yourself as possible. Sending healing vibes your way
I was completely obsessed with our recliner when we got our first cat. Scared me so bad that someone would close it up without checking. Our new kitten likes to go under the leg part especially when there's a blanket hanging down. Ugh I'm always swatting her out of there. But she's getting better!
A man who loves cats and guitars? You're my brother from a different mother! This channel is amazing; your content is always helpful *and* entertaining. Thank you.
Well, my Stefan is nice boy. He doesn't chew on cables, he doesn't throw things off the cupboards or anything really. He only like to scratch the couch. But he's about 5-6 years old and he's a rescue cat, he's been living with me for 7 months. I let him out onto an unshielded balcony, there are trees and birds near by, but he never tried to jump or anything. He had been living on the street for who knows how long and he misses outdoors.
I actually had the experience of a fire in my apartment building and I couldn't get to my cat, who was under the bed in time. Thankfully, he was okay but it was so scary.
Bless you for making this, Jackson, this was SO THOROUGH 👍! I didn't think much would apply to me after being a cat owner & rescuer for decades, but I STILL found a few: so TAKE HEED, FOLKS! NEVER UNDERESTIMATE A CAT.😳 What rang a bell here: I too have had cats go in the dryer, cabinet, & recliner, get stuck behind the washer, drink from the toilet, nearly choke on a plastic aspirin seal, yarn ball, & tinsel, nearly crushed by an unstable bed & a toppled radiator, nearly hung by the window blinds' cord, the list goes on. Angels must have been at their sides, but that's not always the case: so this is SO LIFESAVING! THANKS! 🙏🙌✌️😻
Got my cat two weeks ago...the next day I woke up to find him behind the radiator and I panicked so much!! That was the LAST place I would've thought to cat proof
Mine got herself stuck behind the dryer! I never thought to check how big the gap was between the dryer and the wall... They really will find wherever they can to be in trouble!
Great video Jackson. I recently, about 1 month ago lost a kitten to an elliptical. It nearly killed me also. I lost a tone of weight and still struggle with it. I have since been catproffing everything, to the point ppl think im crazy . They are little babys that want to explore everything. Little furballs of unconditional love. They deserve for us to protect them and keep them out of harms way. When it happens its to late! God knows i would give everything i own to go back and change that day!
Even though my cats (and foster kittens) know the what "GET DOWN!!" means, and even jump down when they hear me coming... So, in the kitchen when it comes to the stove top, after cooking and the burner is still hot, I fill a pan with cold water and out it on the hot burner till it cools.
I have done all these things, for my toddler, (now in college) and my three kittens adopted 10 years ago. Lost the girl @ 5 years, heart clot and one of the boys January 2021 and the last, so precious last month. Now I look around and realize all the precautions are no longer necessary, candles, curtains, etc. I cry every day.😿😿😿
Our latest edition has been one of our biggest challenges- our cat loves chewing wires. We discovered this when she first chewed a low level laptop plug and we had to rush her to emergency. Since then we have taken every live wire out of reach- and for two technophiles that is a lot of chords. We designated a room the office where she is never allowed, and shut the door at all times. It seems excessive I know to some, but when I find chewed up unplugged chords, it only reinforces that we are doing the right thing.
Jackson is the only man I call daddy. Not my father. Not my husband. Watching him and being informed about bettering my cat's life. He is thee cat D-A-D-D-Y. Thanx
Thank you for this video! Mine have both just turned a year old so they are still young, crazy and curious. They keep me on my toes and I have to be (at least) one step ahead of them at all times
My cat George, is kitten(about ten months), explorer, and Denis the menace all rolled into one... He is into everything!! This morning he tried to jump onto a hanging light fixture in the dining room... We are in a rental so I can't change what type of light fixture is there... George is good at keeping me on my toes!! And child safety on cabinet doors is definitely needed! George has figured out how to open the cabinet doors that are not tied shut... ( I tied the cabinets under my two sinks shut so he can't get to cleaners ect) he uses his paws like hands and pulls the edges until they open... I love my Georgie... But your not kidding when you say cats are like toddlers who can reach the ceiling!!!
Hiya. Can you not change the light fitting, but keep the original and just change it back before you move out at any point? That's what I've done In my rental. And not even because of catification, but just because the light fitting they had in the living room was so ugly I couldn't take looking at it! Lol
Our Maine Coon kitten thankfully was/ is very smart and has his own sense of danger in may areas. I think he did bite into a cord and learned his lesson the first time. Compressed air has been my best training tool for him. Started him early with jumping on counters, tables. Pet-proof screening is very affordable.
Just what I needed! I'm hoping to adopt a kitty in a couple of weeks (once the landlord gives the green light) thanks for the endless stream of information and encouragement, I'm so excited to bring this little man home!
The categories my cat, Loki, comes under are Explorer and Dennis the Menace which would make him Explorer the Menace! He definitely emulates his namesake, Loki the God of Mischief!
My mom was Norwegian so I grew up learning the Norse legends. Many years ago, a young couple who moved in next to my parents had a baby and named him Loki. They were surprised by my reaction to the name! "Are you _sure_ you want to call him that?" 🤣
I so wanted to name my kitten Loki but I’m silly superstitious and so didn’t want a self fulfilling prophecy situation to happen. 😂Great name for a cat though, really fitting! Love it.
Tam haha true it is but I love my troublemaker to death and he also acts like a scaredy-cat as well it is a really funny thing for me because I named him after a really famous troublemaker god.
Jackson, this video could not have come up at a better time! I just adopted a 6 week old kitten to be a companion to my 6 year old cat,, and I am already seeing MANY things I am in the process of kitten-proofing. I like that you mentioned the runners to cover electric cables. I honestly hadn't really thought much about that because my older cat is not destructive at all. He has his toys and cat tree and window perch he hangs out on, but OH BOY is this little kitten a pistol! I would also like to add in addition to covering your cables, there are these things called "cable management boxes" . they are small to medium sized boxes that cover up your power strips. These have been the BEST things we have found to keep our new kitten from stepping on power strips and turning them off, or prevent her from putting her claws in them. Velcro also works well to attach said cable management boxes to walls or under your desk. As far as my kitchen goes. I do not have handles on my cabinets, but have found that velcro on the cabinets also works to keep both cat and kitten out of them.
When I was growing up we would put at risk ducklings and chicks in the oven to keep them warm (pilot light), so we always did "chick check" before turning the oven on. ( no, we NEVER burned any) Sixty years later all three of us sisters( the boys didn't cook) still do chick check, even in electric ovens.
Jackson dude, I've been watching you for years. My cat from hell was always one of my favorites as a kid and I continue to love watching your channel on here as an adult. Thanks for always being you and giving us cat owners helpful information 🤘
Can you do a video about moving into a new home with your cats? Specifically, how to ease their transition into a brand new place while maintaining the peace between them? Love your videos!
Thank you for making this extensive list. People don't think about these things. When I was a vet tech, a client called in hysterical because her cat was killed in the dryer. Another cat ate a sewing needle with the thread still attached. We only found it because he became so ill and we were about to anesthetize him for exploratory surgery. Opened his mouth to intubate and there it was, piercing his soft palate 😨
Paper twist and other types of handles on gift bags are a hazard to pets. The handles need to be removed if you're going to let them play with a paper bag.
My Husband said it's insane how many times he's had to go to a fire clean up (his job) that's been started by a dog or a cat turning those stove knobs then walking away. It's very common and your house will burn down. Those safety things are important!
I love having candles. What I ended up doing with both of mine is lighting one and then holding their paw about 8-12 inches above the flame, letting them pull back when they wanted to. They both got treats and love and praise after. Both of them got the message immediately that this is hot and I don't want to touch it or mess with it. Even so, if I have to leave the room for any reason, I blow it out.
I have been cat safetyfying my appartment all summer for the arrival of our kitten the 15th of september. Everybody wondered why I was so stressed during the holidays… and they laughed… it was good to find this video. And I learned some new dangers… 🤯
Definite yes to the washer and dryer one. Several years ago my old cat crawled in the dryer while my mom was putting clothes in, so they were put on top of her. My mom had no idea she was in there. It took several minutes until my brother heard loud noises in there and maybe some meowing, so he decided to open the dryer. We had to rush to the vet and she was all banged up. They tried to help but, well... she didn't make it.
I remember my mother rescuing our cat from the dryer. The lid was left open with warm towels and the cat got in. Later Mom didn't realize and started the dryer. She knew she didn't have tennis shoes in there which is what it sounded like. She did mouth to mouth recessation and saved our cat.
This happened to my family when I was 6. Our kitten crawled into the dryer because it was warm and the person who loaded it didn't look before putting the cloths in. The kitten wasn't found until someone was unloading the dryer. It was rather traumatic for the whole family. I check the dryer each time now and watch the door while loading it so no one has a chance to sneak it.
I’ve been nailing down everything I can with museum putty in preparation for our new cat, suddenly the whole house looks put together and nice bc all those knickknacks stay in the same, aesthetic position all the time. Haven’t had to tidy my windowsills in WEEKS it’s wonderful
I’m having to keep my kitten in one half of the house because of renovations. I just added two temporary doors to the hall. Hope to have him free soon.
Great Video. I have a pair of littermates, male and female who are quite resourceful. The larger one can open doors and the smaller one open cabinets. So between the two of them, they can be quite challenging. Solution....I have locks in every door even the closets and they stay locked at all times. Cord covers in every cord. Both of them liked chewing on cords since they were kittens. Our banister is covered with cardboard. Because the first week we had them, Nelson (the larger male) was running across the living room floor, slipped on the hardwood, right through the bannister down the stairs! Thankfully he was unharmed but the cardboard went up immediately! Needless to say, it’s a lot to think about but all worth it!
We had an accident with my daughters new kitten. He's about 13 weeks old Super friendly super playful ...lots of bursts of fast dashes up and down the hall the stairs....he slipped and had that bad landing.....hind leg is fractured. The vet costs were very expensive so yes these things do happen to real people. It will take up to 4 weeks to heal but the other challenging part to this is he needs to wear a protective cone so he doesn't lick the cast. He is so so sad this will seem like a lifetime for poor kitten. I'm so sad too.
Jackson when it comes to my cat Elsa I double & triple check everything. I couldn't handle it if anything happened to her. I've learnt so much from you. Thank you so much. 😽😸😺😻
"An IKEA bookcase could come right down" lmao my home consists of literally 90% IKEA furniture 😬 gonna have to spend some time bolting everything to the walls lmfao
Candles , flowers 💐, my kitten just last night knocked over the whole thing of flowers and water went everywhere . So This video has helped . It’s helped me a lot thank u . The toilet seat being down is very important esp with kittens . I actually have to redo my whole cottage and kitten proof things . I have two children one 19 and one 6 so I’ve been thru baby proofing but it’s all over again with this kitten 😂❤ My bday was Oct 7 I also had 2 balloons and I just got rid of them bc she loved the colorful frilly weights that keep them down , the strings were her fave . All I kept thinking was “ that darn balloon is gonna get up to the ceiling fan and get tangled inside or the cat will pop it and choke .
I’d love to see a video and your take on managing cat life with multiple cats. I have 5 furry babies and that comes with a whole new set of challenges. For example, training is difficult as all 5 crowd me at the same time if treats are about. Going to a different room doesn’t work as they’ll scratch at the door to be allowed in - which is super distracting for the kitty I’m trying to work with. Food can be difficult to track, it can be difficult to monitor bathroom waste, etc. I’d just love to hear your take on it 😁
I still have some catproofing left to do in my livingroom, but one big thing I decided - both to help with my hubby’s allergies and because of all the cat dangers involved was this: The office/ Craft room is a cat-free zone. None of her scent markers are in there, and we keep that door closed when neither of us are in there. When he’s studying, sometimes she’ll wander in for a quick scritch, but we quickly turn her around so she doesn’t linger in there. Most everywhere else can be catproofed. That room, I just don’t trust myself not to miss something small with.
I took in a young cat that someone in my apartment building couldn’t take care of anymore and quickly realized he is a high energy Siamese mix. He would pretty intensely play ambush me and my roommates and bite our ankles constantly but with watching your videos I got a handle on his predictable energy highs with scheduled play time and getting a harness and leash to take him outside for daily walks (which he LOVES). He’s still high energy but with your help he’s now using up his energy in ways that aren’t destructive.
Fun fact: most stove knobs pop right off and are easy to pop back on! I just pull all mine off at all times and keep them in a drawer for when i need them. Saves you a little bit of money instead of buying the knob covers!
I replaced all of my windows with pet screen. It’s really made a difference. No more runs from cats sharpening claws( even if there due for trim) I’ve never had a cat’s claws get stuck in/on pet screen. I buy a roll of it and replace the screen myself so they can’t break through and the pet screen lasts longer.
The museum putty blew my mind. I immediately added it to cart online! I can attest to the fridge and the dishwasher. My explorer kitty got his paw stuck in the dishwasher. He was about to climb inside while I was loading it and shut it with my hip (habit). He yelped and thankfully no harm was done. My cousins once got their new little kitten stuck in the freezer...overnight... its a miracle he survived. He jumped in there when my uncle was filling up the ice trays and no one found him until the next morning!! Wild
I rub Dawn dish soap on wires it taste very bitter. I put black pepper on my certain objects, spritz Misty water on the side of the furniture to keep them from scratching and sprinkle black pepper on it after that. Worked for me for over 50 years and I rescued many many many animals.
Hey my moms always been afraid of cats so I was never allowed to have one growing up. But I’m 19 and a sophomore in college now and I got a grey/black/brown/orange tabbi cat and I love him. I really like watching these videos and other videos to educate myself on being a good owner for the little dude. And tbh it’s honestly working. When I first got him he would chew my chargers, hide from, meow constantly at night but I’ve slow ley been implementing the advice from these videos and over time his meowing has stopped and he seems to imprinted on me. Overall he’s been a good boy lol. (Btw he’s 5-6 months old
I got 2 bc several professional animal experts including jackson said it was easier bc they teach each other. But OMG it has been hard. They are into everything! They are female siblings and got them at 3 months old. Before they got here my husband and I packed up everything on tables and shelves in living room bought a giant cat tree. Same with bedroom. But they want behind the mirror above my dresser. They can jump from one dresser to the other and over the washer and dryer to get behind them. We keep the bathroom doors shut bc they slice the shower curtains. They have their own bedroom and that's where they stay while we sneak in a meal for ourselves. They are either 5 month old wildcats or sleeping sweet we love them cats. I've had cats b4 but never 2 at a time!
you got the same word for word story of my life rn its crazy, if u have any tips id love it really struggling with my kitty chewing chargers and hiding from me
This is a great list! There are some things on here that I need to think about for my own house. I would like to add one serious hazards in my home that wasn't mentioned in the video. The back of the slide-out freezer drawer. My refrigerator has the freezer section on the bottom and it's a big, heavy drawer you pull out. The cats are often hanging around in the kitchen when I'm rummaging around in there. The scary part is that when the drawer is sitting open, the cats can easily slip right into that big gap inside the fridge/freezer that's empty when the drawer is pulled out but when you close it, they can get crushed (we have to slam it shut bc it's so heavy) or gravely injured and then freeze/suffocate to death. So I always check to make sure one of the cats hasn't slipped in there before I close the freezer drawer. I just keep the bathroom door closed all the time. They don't go in there unless I pick them up and take them in for a bath or a fur trim.
Ive got 8 cats so best thing is to just keep all the doors closed (apart from the lounge) so they cant enter bedrooms, bathrooms or the kitchen. I also have to keep a lock on the main living room since they know how to open the door!
My cat crossed the rainbow bridge a month ago. He was an absolute angel and I miss him. He was feral who finally became tame. He didn’t bother anything. He never scratched furniture, bothered plants, jumped on countertops, Christmas trees, etc. He slept on my beds and couch, but only if I put his blankets down first. It might be an entirely different scenario when and if I adopt another cat. This video makes me sad because I’m realizing my perfectly behaved kitty is gone and maybe he was a rarity. He was the best.
Came into my bedroom and my stretchy acrylic blanket was crumpled on floor. I thought my cat just was playing and pulled it to the floor.WRONG! MY CAT WAS INSIDE WITHOUT NO WAY TO GET OUT. I NO longer leave these blanks on bed when I am gone. Also learned to make my blanket high contrast to cat so to be able to see him and not sit down on him. (Great job Jackson).
Yep! I know. I worked at a vet for 5 yrs ago. Some people didn't think about Xmas lights plugged in. The cat bit into it. Burnt the cats mouth and throat. Stomach feeding tube in for a week. We had to put the cat down. Unplug your cords if you don't need them !
I refer to my youngest cat as "Dennis the Menace in a cat suit" - he wants to get into everything. Fortunately, he is more of a floor dweller and does not want to get up high.
When on the subject of the laundry room another important safety precaution should be mentioned. My one cat is small even though she is fully grown. She loves to get behind the dryer and tear up the flexible dryer vent. I do not have a way of shutting her out since the laundry area is an open space in the hallway. I did read a good tip though that I am going to try. You can get hardware cloth, which is actually pliable metal like chicken wire but with smaller grids and wrap it around the vent. Hopefully this tip will also help someone else with a similar issue☺️
As always Jackson Galaxy the cat Daddy! You're a very good parent, you mentioned things I had not thought of, so I thank you very much. I have pretty much a chemical-free home so that's not a big problem but it was something definitely worth mentioning. I just want to thank you for all the information you always give us and hopefully I can get one of those sweatshirts still because it's really cool. And by the way your beard looks really nice the way it is. Please give your beautiful wife my best Be safe Be happy Have light love and mojo Back at you.

I have a cat that’s a bit shy, so I put my bed on the floor. That seemed easier than trying to completely block off the unders. The mattress and box springs are both very thick so it’s still high enough to sit on easily. I lost the under bed storage space by doing this but it’s worth it.
I know you don't have a problem with this 🤣 but I have long hair. When scooping litter I find my hair in it. At times I see my hair hanging out of their mouth and I pull it out. Our hair isn't as strong as thread so I hope there is no serious danger there. It isn't like they will swallow a ball of our hair
I don't allow my cats into the laundry room. Even so, I still constantly check the washer and dryer before I start them just in case. it's one of my greatest fears. Pretty much anything else really dangerous I just avoid having altogether. Before we had a laundry room, I would have to physically see all cats before I would even start the dryer.
This was amazing! I’d love to know how to board up your couch or block it off. My kittens love going in there so I have pillows stuffed under there for now so they can’t get in! 🤦🏻♀️
The other day my cat launched from the counter to the top of the fridge (her favorite show off move)... but this time she kicked off the knob to the power burner on the stove. Managed to turn it on full flame right in front of me. Thankfully I am working from home so I could quickly turn it off. I immediately purchased locks for the knobs. Before this experience I would have never believed it necessary.
Hey I was just thinking of Justin Wilson the cajun tv chef the other day. I don't know where you're from, Jackson, but you just made a reference to him at the beginning of your video. I guarantee it.

Spend time with the cats that you think you are interested in. If you spend time with several of the cats believe me one of them will choose you and you will have a very happy fur baby! 😺😻😽
Also Jackson is 100% correct about adopting two.
Thank you for this very useful and helpful advice. Brilliant!
You got it! Yes! 👍
That’s a great idea. I’ve also taught my pets the word dangerous.

@@benw9949 I think he may have thought it was the ghost of Christmas past 👻
LOL. I'm glad the cat and the neighbor survived that.
😂
😂 That's funny! The poor neighbour must have nearly had a heart attack. Haha!
Pat on the back. Glad this worked out fortunate for you.
thank God you guys are safe!!

My youngest loves the fridge too.

I haven’t thought of the silverware, good tip.
@Lynn Miller Exactly!

Update: got my baby 3th of August as a surprise. Can't explain the love I'm feelings to this baby. I guess love really is multiplied and not divided.
Awww,.. lucky!! :D
Better to get them now then at 3am from the ER vet after they've told you kitty needs a $3,000 surgery.
@@imzadi83fanvids7 how is the fur-baby doing now? What happened?
I have a whole cat proofing checklist I go through before I leave the house but it’s all worth it. I can’t even leave clothes out on my bed because my cat will eat any string coming off of it. Simple things like that for keeping my evil boi safe
same, especially have to remember to put masks in a safe spot! my boy sadly loves those strings :(
Could you please share the List?
Can you share your list ❤️
Yes, please share your list :)
Please share would be really healthy
Growing cat grass and catnip for your cats in favorite window spots helps.
Amazing! TY for adopting a senior!! ❤
Agreed. Just “rented” (oh hell, ya never “own” a cat!) a senior who had been in the shelter far too long.
I am now truly a cliche: The Old Widow Broad™️ with the Old Cat. (But just one....so ffaarrr...!)
So true. Their “catitude" is what we love most.
The sweetest cats I've ever had were a couple of seniors my partner and I have. I'm sure we were spared MANY headaches just because of how chill our lil guys are. You're a real 1
Art supplies! Especially any wet media. Even if you're using nontoxic materials, it's still a pain. Washing gesso off a cat's leg or following a trail of green paw prints on your carpet to find a cat you need to bathe is miserable for everyone involved. 😭
Learned that one the hard way - still have the remnants of teal colored paw prints on my hardware stairs.
For any tall IKEA furniture, there are included fasteners that you must attach your furniture to the wall with. You can even go to any IKEA store and receive these kits for free. I guess you DO get what you pay for.
touché!!!
Yea I am worried now. Gonna be putting holes into the wall I guess.
Mine too! She is lovely but a handful now! A far cry from the starving little parasite riddled girl in the street two months ago
This is a fantastic idea for a video!!!
I second it!!
Try leaving the litter box door open. Your baby might feel a little safer. Don't forget play and snuggle time
My boi had always been so good, never chews on cables or anything.
How do u do it, my kitty sees me put down a cable and immediately starts chewing it 🥲
@@Jiaeme put hot sauce on some of your wires. One and done lick and never again 😂 (dont actually do this haha buy some cat safe spray that is made for them to hate and stay away from)
Lucky...
Lucky you !!
Mine is the same way... if he can’t chase it, he’s not interested 💙
How exciting! For the cat. No so much you, I'm sure. lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@catherinerose1607 Yes, it was two minutes too long, for me.
I'm a senior who loves to read. You should consider having your books in large print.
I know I appreciate how you make videos on most issues anyone can deal with their furbabies
As a dyslexic person with bad eyes, large print book’s are awesome!
Oh my gosh I had to read that multiple times to realise it didn’t say your senior cat loves to read 😂
That is so sad.
I hope you have healed; it is not your fault. May you find healing and know that you saved that cat from a life on the streets/shelter. You rescued the cat and did the best you could with the information you had. Your cat forgives you and you should as well. Much love
I pray you have healed and overcome the guilt. Your kitty is now over the rainbow Bridge resting in peace and I hope that brings you comfort 🙏
Aww I'm so sorry, that sounds awful :( Hugs
Little tip for the crafters and people who sew: get a tool box to store your threads, needles and even fabric. Yes the tool box thats usually for construction tools, but the small, hard plastic ones come often with multiple compartments, a nice handle and with strong clamps to keep the box closed well. These things can come cheaper than storage boxes designed for storing sewing supplies, especially in terms of size and durability. And theyre easy to stack as well!
Fishing tackle boxes are amazing for organization!
❤❤❤❤❤ the love from a kitten , definitely helps ease the pain. ❤💐⚘
Bro told us a heartwarming tale. This was better than UP! The quick mention about Henry named after his late son just about broke me 😭
There's a well-known UA-camr who had an unfortunate mishap with a cat in the dryer. Again, you may not think about it, but ALWAYS ALWAYS look first!
Hope you decided to adopt instead
if you don’t have handles on your cabinets I highly recommend these magnetic baby locks that you stick to the inside of your cabinet. Really good if you’re renting and can’t drill holes.
I just love everything about Jackson- his personality, aesthetics, how he explains stuff. I love cats and don't even own one (yet) but I still love to watch these videos just because of Cat Daddy!!
You'll never own a cat... the cat will own you! 😸❤️😂
My boy is a pica explorer. When he discovered cords as a kitten I couldn’t afford the sprays and stuff but I did have a jar of vicks, I put a coat of that on the cable he hasn’t gone near them since. His thing is plastic bags to eat so I just don’t have any.
Oh good idea. I live in the Dominican Republic and can't find cat spray but I will use the Vicks!
@@zknight4481 he looks for it to consume, I spoke with his vet because he actively searched for bags and threw up bits later.
My cat hasnt been diagnosed with pica but this last year she keeps going for wires 👀
Going to use your tip and Jackson's cord hider tip, switch vicks for orange though. Has anyone found any flowers that aren't poison to cats. So many! I love Rose's and lilies but I love my cat more. Still would be nice to have some flowers occasionally.
Don’t forget the string or ear loops on the end of face masks!! My cat has destroyed a few so I always put them away when I get home.
I pull the ear loops off the disposal masks before I toss them out.
Same! Our cat chewed off and ate one of the loops. Thankfully it came out the next day on its own.
He wants to be safe
FYI dryers are really dangerous i had a kitten die in a dryer it was a accident my mom didn’t check all the way
For my fellow kitten owners who have a low bed and you're waiting for your kitten to get big enough that they don't fit under the bed anymore, a very budget-friendly block for under your bed are pool noodles.
"Joanna" 😀
@@zexnynex777 That's my kitty's name. She's named for a friend who passed away about a year before my kitty chose me as her human.
Get a footstool or hassock, and don't use the recline feature on your furniture.
Thank goodness he was ok! That must have been utterly terrifying!!
We lost our sweet Sage a year ago to a house fire 😭😭😭😭 my husband crawled in after her but the smoke ran him out.
@@kayladeerlopez7582 I'm so very sorry Kayla. God Bless You💜🙏
@@loobylouboti I'm sorry, I was not notified of your reply. It was so terrifying. He was a good hider.
@Diana Moore They can be good hiders. There should be some kind of alarm for collars in case of fire.
When my boy was a kitten he had gotten behind the fridge, I had to pull the fridge out inorder to free him, thankfully he did not hurt himself
😢😢😢
Even though my cats (and foster kittens) know the what "GET DOWN!!" means, and even jump down when they hear me coming... So, in the kitchen when it comes to the stove top, after cooking and the burner is still hot, I fill a pan with cold water and out it on the hot burner till it cools.
Oof, I never would have thought of that, thanks so much!!! My cat comes today and my burners stay hot for ages...
I cry every day.😿😿😿
Not long after I got my pair of kittens, I had to literally remove everything that was on a shelf of any kind /sigh
You should develop a line of cat safe cleaning products.
Watch the video to the end-he does!
Lol
@@loobylouboti thanks for the suggestion! 🙂
Haha same with my Loki!
My mom was Norwegian so I grew up learning the Norse legends. Many years ago, a young couple who moved in next to my parents had a baby and named him Loki. They were surprised by my reaction to the name! "Are you _sure_ you want to call him that?" 🤣
Lol
I have my granddaughters watching My Cat from Hell. They are learning that undesirable behavior has a reason behind it. You need to do the work !!
This is very timely. I am just about to transfer my kittens into my bedroom and I just realized that my room is not cat proofed enough 🙃
I've never heard of museum putty! (UK) What an ingenious idea! Thank you!
This should be a mandatory video to watch for first time cat owners before adopting. (Along with the poisonous plants video)
😭🥺omg
This happened to a childhood friend of mine when we were in 4th grade
So does he ;-)
Great Video.
He's about 13 weeks old
Super friendly super playful ...lots of bursts of fast dashes up and down the hall the stairs....he slipped and had that bad landing.....hind leg is fractured.
My explorer siamese cat has done a lot of things on this list lol I learned from mistakes but nice there’s you gave us a checklist now
I took in a young cat that someone in my apartment building couldn’t take care of anymore and quickly realized he is a high energy Siamese mix.
What is misty water?
I'm so sorry for this sad time in your life. I just lost my baby 5 weeks ago. I'll send you a cyber hug, just in case it would help.
Good advice. Things you never think of, cats will find. Thank you Jackson once again. X
Reminds me of a saying I have when I'm in a very uncomfortable situation, "I feel like a cat in a room full of rockers."
Yep!

Jackson: “who is your cat”
Me: it is a kitten that I don’t even have yet so I don’t know it’s Personality’s
ME LMAO
Right lmaooo
Same lol 😂
I have a cat that’s a bit shy, so I put my bed on the floor. That seemed easier than trying to completely block off the unders. The mattress and box springs are both very thick so it’s still high enough to sit on easily. I lost the under bed storage space by doing this but it’s worth it.
I know you don't have a problem with this 🤣 but I have long hair. When scooping litter I find my hair in it. At times I see my hair hanging out of their mouth and I pull it out. Our hair isn't as strong as thread so I hope there is no serious danger there. It isn't like they will swallow a ball of our hair
Im so glad I got my mom on board with catification. We always share ideas and I'm so excited to catify up our home :D
My cat Sigma that died in July (19yr) was a nightmare cat that taught me all of these lessons... he definitely used all of his 9 lives
I guarantee it.
i’m a new yorker but no matter- the cajun chef (and his suspenders) reached far and wide!
