That is so fantastic of you!! Just a thought - maybe get another kitten as company and playmates for each other. Jackson again mentioned getting 2 kittens together. Great for them and such fun for the humans.
@@jeandixon586 I’ve actually thought about it, I love cats, but I’m unfortunately terribly allergic and have a bird so I don’t feel that would be terribly responsible of me unfortunately. I put up with my allergies for her kitty though!
Big s/o to Jackson for educating us every week instead of saying “read my book”. He sells his books & products for the cats, not for himself 😽😽 what a rad guy
I live in the UK and keep my 3 cats indoors. They are so much more relaxed than the indoor/outdoor cats I've had previously during childhood. People here think it is cruel, but so many cats get run over, stolen, poisoned or injured by evil people over here too. I have a catio for mine, numerous beds, cat posts, a cat tree, scratch pads and lots of toys!
I thought it is cruel for the longest time, too. But honestly... we keep our dogs indoor and on leashes, too. And I am absolutly positive, that dogs would be happier if they could roam free outside as well... but for dogs everyone understands that that is a bad idea and instead we developed a huge bunch of activities for dogs as substitute. I hope this attitude changes in Europe, because cats are a real problem for biodiversity, simply because they are so many, and their prey shrinks in numbers every year and will be gone if we don't increase our efforts to protect them. (Exception: rats).
I niverunderstand why people keep digs tightly controlled but cats are just let out if the door. Weird. Mine love their enclosed garden and I have peace of mine. Especially in the current climate of what may be coming to us all. Stock up on pet food folks.
I'm in the UK too and literally everyone who knows thinks it's so strange that I don't let him outside to get into trouble and kill birds. I wish people were more understanding of it, but I'm glad it's becoming slightly more popular now.
Totally agree, I’m British but live in Europe and in Malta most cats are indoor cats too and I’d never let mine outside. I can’t imagine not knowing if she is safe and knowing how dangerous roads are, I’d never relax! She’s the happiest cat I ever knew so I know its the right thing to keep them indoors too!

Jackson you're the reason I have a cat. I am disabled and have multiple mental health issues and having sprinkles has been so important and has made my life better in so many ways. She means the world to me and I would do anything for her. She even lets me pet her belly when she stretches out.. after having her a few months she stopped hiding and now shows belly to ANYONE who pets her. Shes perfect in every way. One of my three cats is always desperate to go outside. Nearly every attempt at a cat-harness walk has ended in escape, followed by a panic-induced cat recovery session (ahh!). I've decided cat walks are too risky to continue, but... I'm glad to say we're constructing a catio! Hopefully our little adventurer will be pleased with this compromise.
See if your "outside" cat would be willing to use a backpack like my cat does. We have a clear, hard sided on the left and right unit from Pet Seek which is excellent. She gets to see everything but is protected. We go everywhere with it, even to restaurants. Funny thing is, we get almost as many comments from men as we do from women. It brings a smile to all around without endangering the cat.
Yeah, dad and stepmom had 3 of their cats that were indoor/outdoor. Coyotes moved in and got one, couple of years ago. So, the other 2 became full time indoor like it or not. The younger one still wants to bolt for an open door now and again. But, it has seemed as he has gotten older less interested in doing so.
My husband passed last year, and my daughter encouraged me to get a cat from the shelter. She knew that I love cats, but my husband was allergic to them. My precious black, female kitty, is amazing! She is inside, and has three windows that I set up, with a comfortable seat, at each one. Also, I have two flights of stairs, that give her exercise. She has such a personality.
We found a pregnant black cat 🐈⬛ and she is crazy 😂 Love her though ❤ The kittens are nearly grown up and are safe btw. They have stayed in the family because we didn’t trust anyone else to take care of them 🤣
@@Neko_Komi Now that's what I call love! ❤️ Very fortunate little furbabies 🥹 Am preparing my home for a little 1 year old boy, coming next week! Am very excited 😅 I think I shall call him "Mojo" after Jackson! Hope he will be happy here 🙏 Take care! 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
Sorry for your loss. It is very nice to see you even think about the exercise(stairs), very empathetic. I am sure your husband is watching over you like God.
I was always a dog guy and never had any interest in cats. My wife and I saved a half starved cat as a blizzard started. We pampered her so much and She pampers her daddy as well! She sleeps between my wife and I , if we do not acknowledge her she plop’s on us repeatedly until we pet her! Her name is Autumn and her and I have a love affair going! Love your programs, it helps us better Autumn’s standard of life and happiness!
As a person living in Europe / The Netherlands I agree on keeping cats indoors. I grew up with cats that would be outdoor cats and only one of the 4 cats we had made it past the 10 years and the rest of them tragically passed away. So I'm more than happy to see my own cats still happily jumping around in their senior years inside my living room :)
I refused to keep my cats outdoors after one of mine was killed with a bat, by a classmate, back when I was in middle school. Once I left my parents’ house, my cats were all indoors-only.
Same. I don't have cats yet (planning on having in a few years when me and my partner will live on our own) and it's really sad when the cats (or dogs really) are just left alone to run outside and there is little to no catification done inside the house. The resulting aggression (from not having territory) is just heartbreaking.
@@CynthiaPrice79 If someone had done this to any of my cats, I would make sure they have a permanent reminder not to repeat ie loss of teeth/wired up jaw.
My nurse sister took in a preggo cat and was all over me to take this ONE. He’s the balls though and he’s literally saved my life like 6 times from passing out from low blood sugar. He wants to go with me anywhere I go in the car and he’s the friendliest animal I’ve ever met. Never backed down from anything. 🤗
Love that! I know after a couple of very major back surgeries, my cats were there for me. They seemed to understand. They didn't annoy me they were just there for some major emotional support.
I had a cat that always stayed outside, under the carport ,never roamed ,she was a rescue . she would allow us to vet her and things that had to be done. She lived to 28 years old! In the end she was inside with me , diapered , and she would let me know she loved and appreciated our time. This calico died in my arms and has a marble marker under my fig tree in her favorite place. I have rescued cats my whole life and this 'save' that was distant and a little neurotic was the best.
please tell me what food you give and what treatment you did to her, vaccune every year, etc? Please teach me your knowlegde, dear cat guru, I need your guiding for my naughty cat 😭
For forty years I believed strongly that cats should be allowed to enjoy being outside. A month ago my beloved pet was killed and carried off by a coyote, from my backyard in daytime. I've now adopted two rescues and they will be staying indoors.
So very sorry to hear that about your baby. No matter how old they are they will always be our babies! I have 2 kittys, both handicapped and adopted, by me. My little loves... And I adopted a German Shepherd. They all have medical lifelong disabilities. Didn't plan it that way but I am very happy just the same😂😂😂
I also used to say that kitties should be able to go outside. But after learning the harm they do to native wildlife all over the world and the dangers they face outside I will always keep cats inside and tell others to please do the same!
I would also like to remind folks that the only living thing that has the same energy as a kitten...is another kitten. Adopting two at a time provides great companionship and learning opportunities for them, and means you sometimes get to watch them rolling around and racing each other on the living room floor instead of having to provide appropriate play. I love watching cats play together, preferably with a senior cat on my lap :)
My exotic shorthair furbaby's are always on the watch for a window being left open a bit too much, so they can jump into the garden. I can't build a catio as I'm in an apartment. I have thought of getting a little harness and lead for them so I can take them outside for 5-10 mins. At the moment just growing cat grass.
.......... to continue.... So when I try to find homes for them, especially because they come from a big family of other cats where they've cuddled play together wrestle together just have general fun together sleep together eat together.... after all that I don't want to bring them to another family by themselves. To. me that's a little bit mean.... we need to think of the the kitty cats well-being, not just ourselves.; but their happiness too. so I always try to encourage people to take at least two if not three but at least two so they'll have each other...... if a person or family only wants to take one I won't do it and I tell them the reasons why. they are better together to have another feline there of their own kind. Yes we can love them and show them attention but not constantly. When another of their own kind is there they can play and cuddle together!!!
I’ve had indoor cats for 45 happy, happy and healthy years. They have windows, toys, perches, hiding spots, comfy 🛌, clean water, and fresh food … always … and me to care for and play with them. 😻
That's very encouraging. I get guilt-tripped by my family for not wanting to let the cats outside. Although I understand the live-free-or-die philosophy, I worry about the kitties when they are out. So thanks for a positive review of indoor living!
@@saradavies5809 I have four cats indoor only. I'm in the UK, numbers of indoor cats here are growing. There are so many missing cat posters in my area, I decided to start keeping mine indoors. He was previously a stray so I thought he might be unhappy being an indoor cat as he was used to being outdoors, but he's adjusted so well! I got him a huge cat tree as my 'apology' for not letting him out 😂 and he's got lots of scratching posts/mats, toys and cat grass. Some evenings I also do training sessions with him and he's learned to sit and give his paw on command. My project for this summer is to build a catio!
Thank you so much for not only protecting your cat, but also protecting local wildlife! It sounds like you really love your cat and it makes me happy to hear you are providing so much enrichment and attention.
@@Cruznick06 In the UK, the wildlife isn't much of an issue because small cats are native to the UK. It's a huge issue in North America, South America, and Australia where they aren't native and are invasive species. That said, keep your cats indoors because it's the safest option for them! :)
I have two indoor cats in Korea. Since I live on 10th floor of an apartment, I got a catio with cat trees and large windows. I have 4 litter boxes and scratchers all over my house including my living room. Watching this clip definitely helps what to do for my loving cats. 😻

Yeah, I live in the UK too and almost all my neighbours let their cats out. Also, one of the requirements if you want to adopt a cat is to let it go outside. I don't understand that, especially I'm from Poland where it's in an adoption contract that it's mandatory to keep the adopted cat inside.
@@nnlss1110 yeah I have lots of neighbours with cats and unfortunately they use our garden as their litter box! I would agree that it makes more sense to keep them indoors especially given how many of them disappear (presumably killed by cars).

@@nnlss1110 it is because having your cat inside is considered abusive by many people in western Europe... which is slowly changing, but still its very wide spread.
@@hannajung7512 yeah, it is. It's a shame that these people don't see that at the same time outdoor cats which have unlimited food in their homes are predators killing a lot of small animals like birds. They don't hunt because they're hungry, just because it's their nature.
I cannot express enough how much easier it was to adopt a bonded pair of kitties. They got to know me and already felt comfortable with each other. This is the third time adopting a pair, but 40 years ago we didn't have people like Jackson giving me the insight I get today.
We took a pair of brothers and they were inseperable - but one day, one of them caught a virus and it crashed his liver. Sometimes his brother still goes looking for him, miaowing loudly.
I have to tell you, my cat lived 14 years, in Oakland, as a mostly outdoor cat- his choice. I moved and he was forced to become an indoor cat. He will be 20 in March. Thanks for this great video!
@@belmum1689 Doesn't the cat have a chip? I kind of understand both sides here... The cat may have been sitting at the neighbors home all day while your sister thought she was outside.
My cat age 13 has never had a desire to go outside. She doesn’t try to bolt out the door when it opens. She’s walked outside a few times, looked around and was like 🥴 nah I’m good, turned around and went back inside.
lol lucky you, my cat doesn’t even need to see the door open soon as he hears it being open he’s already standing there looking for a chance to escape before you’re even walking in lol
My cat used to be feral, and she does this. She might chew on grass and watch the birds, but she doesn't want to hunt anymore. Then she wants back inside after 10 minutes.
I adopted my cat, who was close to starving when she was found. Although the vet reckoned she was two, I genuinely thought she was perhaps five or six months as she was terribly thin and small. Now she lives very happily as an indoor cat. 13 years later and she is a content and secure cat.
When i got my cat i was told she was 6-7 months, the vet said 2 yrs, i think she was 5-6 yrs old. Ive had her 7 yrs now and i can't imagine not having her in my life
i can relate, i rescued an scpa cat that they were going to put down in a few days. 22, yes 22 years later she is still with me but sadly was recently diagnosed with early kidney disease. she gets a pre a pro biotic kidney powder supplement in her soft food and she has improved for now.
Australian (who now lives in NZ) here. One place I lived was right next to a nature reserve. So many native birds. Another place we lived was next to a dairy farm. So many snakes. So yeah. I don't want them preying on wildlife, or having the wildlife prey on them.
@@Fennily and trap them! Ive seen it happen. I get doing it in the bush because those are ferals and often kill wildlife and are actual pests here like wild dogs but doing it outside of proper rural areas is super sick.
How's the gov't in Down Under? From the news it sounds like its getting pretty fascist. Complete lockdowns? "Get the vax or endure my wrath" one Australian Govt official says sternly.
Another reason to play with your cat: it helps relieve stress. Stress can lead to Feline Idiopathic Cystitis, which is very dangerous, even deadly, especially for younger male cats. My 4 yr old tabby was just diagnosed with FID after I saw him peeing blood in my laundry basket. I immediately scooped him up and brought him to the vet ER. To quote Jackson: “Play with your cat!”
I hope he's OK now.. Haven't heard of FIC. They definitely need attention, especially when they are an only cat. My cat follows me around the house to get my attention and loves sitting on my lap, and on my bed to get warm, and during day get some sun.
My old boy was terrified of the outdoors. He would love looking out of the window, but as soon as he had to go out (to go to the vet) his hair would just fall out and he would moan meow haha Just had to have him put to sleep. 17 years old and he was in very rough shape, poor old guy. Miss him. About 7 years ago, he nearly died from a blockage in his bladder. I'll never forget the woman at the vets office (the vets wife actually) telling me "It's going to be really expensive. It's just a cat." I was a struggling musician at the time but still said "Just do it!" then I went and sold my 1978 American Strat, I took a serious hit on it but it was enough to cover the bill. It was my gigging guitar too. I would do it again in a heart beat. Unfortunately there was no amount of money that could save him this last time... I probably put it off longer than I should have, but I didn't want to let him go.
I have had 18 cats. So clearly I have watched over several deaths. The worst thing I have done was to keep them going once I realized that they were not well. Cats are amazingly tough, and they will not show pain or discomfort. Recently my 16 year old cat began to show signs of sickness, and the vet said that she was deathly ill. After many previous experiences, I was wise to the event, and I had the vet give her the shots to take her life before, thank God, she really started to suffer. I will never again prolong my cat’s life just so that I can spend more time with him or her. It is very important for us to recognize our responsibility in this matter.
I love the routines I’ve set with my kitty. When he hears me wake up, he starts meowing and we have snuggle time. When we go down stairs, he goes straight to the door for patio time. And he waits at gumbos bowl every evening for his fresh water and dinner. Cats are such a blessing.
Jackson, please look into doing a video on dealing with the death of our beloved pets. Many are in pain over the loss of their cat, in anguish over deciding when it's time to euthanize and guilt for waiting too long or putting their cat down too soon. I know it's not an easy subject but there are a lot of people and cats could use guidance and support in dealing with this. Thank you
Just went thru that 2 weeks ago. Still hurts so much. All valid questions. Did I wait to long? Too quick. Vet not much help in this case. "You know your cat".
@@lindazink4126 Yeah, I know. I asked her opinion, she didn't really wanted to take part. Eventually she said, she would probably do it, too. So frustrating, not knowing what was the right thing to do.
i recently posted on a local page on facebook, warning one of my neighbours about letting there cat out and how it keeps coming to my house to try to get in/fight my indoor cat,i was harassed by a bunch of karens because i was on the side of keeping your cat inside because its safer and overall the cat will have a longer life,Jackson has taught me so much about being a better cat dad and i thank you for that!! you're the man jackson!!!
That reminded me of my time when I still live in a Gated Community. Theres some Karen and a couple of stubborn old coot lived there that "own" outdoor cats. One day, many households put complain about problems related to cats over population. I also have cats, so I'm tried to be a good member of community and pitch in for solution. Im actually already suspicious that those Karen and Old Coots said nothing (it's obvious that the cats is theirs), while the Karen's husband basically said that they're fine with everything and will follow the community decision. Ended up on voting whether to let each household to deal with it by themselves or to force cat owners to put their cat indoors... ALL vote agree on cat being indoor. A week after that, Old Coots refuse to keep cat indoor because "its how they always do", the security that tasked to catch any cat that run out is too cowardly to actually catch the cat, while the Karen's cat somehow went "missing" while they grumble about the Community decision being too authoritarian... shitheads dont even say anything in discussion yet expect us to respect them. Just keep reminding to keep the cats indoor and, if it really bother you, try to get local animal lover community involved.
I'm always going to keep my cat indoors personally, because even though I rescued him and I haven't known him since he was a kitten, it's pretty obvious that he's used to being indoors. He's scared of most things that are outside. Also, we live in southern california in the desert, and there's a lot of coyotes outside that my cat would not be able to protect himself from. The indoor life is the obvious choice for my cat.
I don't let my cat outside bc so many of my cats either got lost or died bc of being let outside, so he's an indoor cat but I let him outside on a harness supervised sometimes
If you have space, no way should they even be outside. If you don’t, take them on a leash if possible. I have 2 of them and they entertain each other, and neither will wear a leash either. They’re also too scared of going outside 😂
Shelter cats sadly are indoor cats, with a few exceptions. One thing that you will notice in shelter cats is whether they are close to window and listening to you (indoor), or close to window ready to jump out(outdoor). There are other differences, but this is the big one I noticed about cats. Note, this is without any prey animals or movement around.
I take both my cats outside with me in the yard,I started when they were kittens,so they know their surroundings, they hang out in the bushes and stuff, then when I call them they follow me right into the house, then they get a treat. They are the best!!
I did the same with my 2. When they were young, one would always sneak over the fence. I would have to go and get him. After awhile he realized that he had to stay in the backyard. Eight years later, I come home and they immediately go out to the garage and front yard. It took a bit of patience but I enjoy watching them sun themselves and pounce on wind blown leaves. I always leave the door cracked in case they get scared and I can't get to the door fast enough to let them in.
same here. as soon as the door opens the shoot to the bushes to try and catch lizards, they munch on grass and roll in it, scratch on the tree and lounge in the sun.
How did you train your cat to do this? My 6 month old kitten keeps trying to get out but I'm so scared he will get lost. I would like him to stay close to the house and not wander off if he ever escapes
@@mq2124 you have to fully supervise them. and keep bringing them back to the area if they wander too far. it helps if your area is fenced. one of mine does jump the fence but only if i go back inside. i think supervision is the key. you cant just toss them outside alone or they will just do what they want.
Might still be problematic for other local wildlife. Don't let them catch or play with lizards or birds, mice, or anything else. Keep your eyes on them. Most wildlife haven't adapted to cats as a natural predator and outdoors cats are quite common.
UK here - Growing up we always had indoor/outdoor cats and I just accepted this as being the norm. I always heard of other people's cats meeting unfortunate fates outside but since it never happened to mine, I put it down to bad luck, and my family continued to let ours out every day. Then we lost our beloved gentleman to a car and I was heartbroken. My entire view changed. While my family still let our remaining cats out, and I don't judge anyone who does so, I decided that as soon as I had left home and got my own pets, they'd remain inside. It's been met with some derision but I know my babies are safe, and that's all that matters. I can't imagine losing either of them
I will always be an indoor only cat owner. I got my first cat at 11. My parents let her outside when she wanted. One day she did not come home on time. When she did, she had a broken front paw with bone sticking out. We took her to the vet and they said it was best to put her down (This was the 1980's). Our neighbor came over and apologized, he was trying to kill a skunk with a trap. Cats being cats, she fell for the trap he placed. I cried for weeks. There are just way too many things out there that can harm an outdoor cat. Cars, evil people, traps. If you love your pet, keep them home and safe. as this video shows, there are a lot of ways to keep them happy inside the house, mainly play and spend time with them.
You're so right. I moved to new area, there's freeway one block, can see from living room window. Was told that one dog died from exposure to antifreeze and her cat got sick. Just too many dangers outside, it's not worth taking risks with our precious pets.

It helps me to realize that playing with the cats and spending time with them is not just a fun thing for ME to do, but it's something they need, something that's good for them. If it just felt like something fun for me, then if I'm feeling busy or tired I might just skip it. But realizing that it's part of maintaining their health makes me much less likely to ignore that very important task.
I have always had cats and after a tragic event decided that indoors is safer in many ways. I moved to southern California and know that there is nothing safe about outdoors, (coyotes and hawks) We had a gruesome find in our yard because our neighbors let their cats outdoors. Thank you Jackson for advocating for indoor living.
Hello, Jackson! I tried a harness on one of my cats yrs ago. I think it was the figure 8 one. It seemed secure on her, but she got outta it & ran back inside! I never tried to bring her outside again. She used to be feral, and she said hell no to the outdoors. She liked her new posh life inside too much. ❤️
I just got my 14 week old her first harness, and I’m so shocked at how quick she got used to it. So, I said f it I’ll try and see how she reacts to the outside. 10 min with the harness on, she’s outside, walking confidently and playing around!!!! She LOVES it, she’s such a natural. It took my Mika mooch a week before we were able to take her outside!
My cat has been more inside, even though my friend found him outside and he adopted me, she was taking care of some cats in her area. Now living near freeway, so put harness on him and he took to it well quickly. He gets to go out get some sun, smells everything, after 10-15 minutes he wants go back inside.
My 6 months lets me put a harness on him after a bit of struggle, but as soon as i bring him outside the door he is just paralyzed by fear and refuses to move, flattening himself on the ground.
Haha when I put harness on our cat she started running around the house in panic and then settled indignant, refusing to move. I gave it back. Harness, not the cat.
I'm in the UK. Outdoor cats are more likely to contract FIV from cat fights...doesn't matter where in the world you live. If you really want to let your cat outdoors, why not cat proof your garden. Jackson please do a video on FIV+ cats! 🖤
I just really want to thank you for promoting cats being indoors. When I was a kid we had an outdoor cat and even after came home with a death threat note my parents still kept him outdoors. He then got poisoned by a cat hater in the neighborhood and died. Now as an adult I'm looking for a kitten myself and I'll definitely keep him or her indoors. Save your cats people 😭
Where I live we have coyotes, bobcats, stray dogs, wild hogs, cars, FIV and other diseases, very hot temps, and stray cats. All reasons to keep your cat inside. And a catio is a wonderful thing!
It's important to keep in mind that a lot of places (like new Zealand and Australia) have native birds whose populations are being thinned out by cats, so keeping your cat indoors could help save endangered species
In Australia its illegal to have cats outside at night or at all in some areas. Its not just native birds but marsupials, reptiles, amphibians and basically anything that moves that's threatened by cats.
Not just Australia. The United States is estimated to house a population of 60-80 million cats, and they are estimated to kill 2.4 billion birds per year, making them the leading human-caused threat to the survival of bird species in the country. - Wikipedia
came to mention this! cats are considered invasive in MANY places (including but not limited to the US and Australia) so please be sure to do your research if you are thinking about allowing your cat to go outdoors. i think harness training would be a great alternative since you can monitor your cat's behavior and they still get to enjoy the outdoors! also PLEASE do not let the animal societies who claim cats are not invasive to fool you, they absolutely ARE invasive and the people who lead those kinds of programs often have no idea what they are talking about. only trust reputable scientific journals and peer-reviewed articles in regards to topics concerning invasive species :)
I live in California and because of fires here our population of some smaller snakes and lizards also are trying hard to make a healthy come back and cats are just wiping them out : ( My cat loves lizards, so she is becoming a permanent inside cat : )
My cat seemed interested in going outside but she's strictly indoor. We tried harness training her for a while but it didn't work out so we've put a hold on it. Instead we got her a stroller to take her outside and she loves it! She was scared the first time but now she gets excited to jump in the stroller.
Yeah, the harness walking, didn't work so much because she just sat outside, so i also got a pet stroller, and now my two cats are happy to go on walks on it. I still put the harness to secure them to the stroller, so i can keep it open which they like more.
Hi, tell me, is this a" special stroller" for cats or a regular baby stroller? because I'd be very interested in getting one for my cats and can you put only one cat in at a time or is there room for maybe two? please respond back because I would really like to get one and thank you very much!! 🐈🐈💕
@@barbmanley3114 i personally have a pet stroller, is like a pet carrier but with wheels , often shaped similar like a baby stroller, with the difference that the area where the pet goes can be fully closed like a carrier and it has something to strap the pet arness to the stroller so it can't jump out of it. They sell them in pet stores but you can find also pretty decent ones and less expensive in aliexpress. I got mine in aliexpress and is pretty good.
I don't know if you read comments, Mr. Galaxy, but if you do.. THANK YOU!!!! I am a first time cat owner, I never intended to have a cat, but a stray moved in with me and decided I was his person so here I am. You have been such a godsend, I was so clueless and it seems like you have a video for everything and it's helped me bond more with my new cat and it's all thanks to you!! I have subscribed and look forward to your videos all the time
Here in Germany, there are many indoor/outdoor cats. My cat is indoors only. She is safer, healthier, and very loved. Thank you for educating about cats.
I put my cat on a harness and go for walks after 1-2 try’s I was surprised how he just started running around. People look at me weird like “you walking your cat”? -Yes Suzanne I’m WALKING MY CAT 😹😹
Mine was ok with the harness, but once outside she really didn't move much. Forward in time, my second cat, who is still a kitten, is growing to be a big cat, and they were too heavy together in the bagpack carrier. So i got a pet stroller. Now i use the harnesses to secure them to the stroller, so i can keep it open like a baby stroller and they enjoy going on walks and explore from there. And people also look at me between weirded out and thinking is cute because they are all like " oh, it's cats what you have there, i thought it was a baby !"
I started feeding my kitten wet food in the morning and dry food at night (7:30/7:30). I gave him dry food this morning and he meowed at me and looked at the fridge. Lol, how does he know!!? So smart!
@@jkbpwlchow is it anthropomorphizing to say that a Cat meows and Looks at the fridge? Cats are really stuck on routines, If you have a picky Eater, Just Not getting that wet food in the morning can throw them. And theyre smart enough to know and smell where you stash the food. Thats Not pretending theyre human, thats Just Observation. My Cats smell the Cat food in the kitchen and will sit in Front of the drawers when i got to the kitchen. Nothing human there, but they know where i keep the food and want to get to it.
@@annabeinglazy5580 totally. My cat feeding routine is to go to the kitchen and prepare the food, then I let it warm it up for a few minutes - I always shoot for 10 and normally make it, so my cat knows how long this "few minutes" is supposed to take. If I get distracted he will come over, "mmmmmmrrrr" and pat my arm to remind me it's time. I have actually verified that his timing is spot on, mind you - this is not in my imagination or some kind of wishful thinking :D As you say, they do indeed know the routine.
Our cat Merlin (who came up on our porch and said "I live here now" when we were moving in) was so much happier when we got him a little sister (Isis). I do think he regretted the fact that she was a kitten once or twice when he was sleeping and Isis was awake and ready to play. They love each other so much.
We're lucky enough to have a screened in porch so we give him daily opportunities to come out with us and places to hang out and check out our backyard with lots of wildlife, from squirrels to birds to the groundhog that lives under our shed. Dervish LOVES it out there. Definitely do your best to make a catio. And if you have one, give them perches and hidey holes where they can hang out while "outside."
We English speakers call them "pets". The Spanish call them "mascotas" (which means pretty much what it looks like it means.) The Germans call them "haustiere" which literally translates as house animal, hearkening back to the origins of domesticated animals. By far my favorite is the French which call them "animal de campagnie" which means Animal Companion and just gets straight to the point!
I recently got a new kitten because I felt like my other cat was lonely by herself. I followed Jackson's instructions on how to introduce them and they are starting to become friends! All three of us have hung out on the sofa a few times. Recently, I was painting a wall and wouldn't let them into that room while I was doing so (or while the paint dried), I came out to them snuggling on the sofa. It's been the best decision. I feel like my family is whole now.
I adopted a bonded pair and it has been such a benefit to us. It's no more expensive or time consuming and the cats benefit greatly. They’re almost 7 years old now and they still curl up together and groom each other. It's beautiful
My female must be an outlier. I got her and another stray months apart and wish I had never had her spayed. She is still wonderful now, but I keep the male in a separate part of my condo and she comes out on my stories high deck with me. She only ever will and would come out when I was with her and never wanted my un-neutered male’s attention. He got out two times and r** her. Otherwise I would have not spayed her. She has been traumatized by the outdoors though. The only sounds she doesn’t panic at are the ones made by me.
@@silllykitten329 I fixed them both. His personality didn’t change at all. He is still awful to her and still an ass in general. She isn’t nearly as sweet as she used to be. I regret fixing her but I know it is better for a cat’s health to do so. Obviously I am glad I did for that reason. The risks are small but I feel like I lost her when it happened at the same time. She isn’t the same cat in the slightest.
@@Rattlsnke I would honestly consider to maybe re home one of your cats, because it sounds like the two really shouldn't be living together. Alternatively, You can also maybe try re introduction? I'm sorry if this isn't my place to say this or an upsetting thing to hear, I'm not trying to tell you what to do I'm just hoping to suggest solutions to make the situation better
My Sadie is a total snuggle-bug so one of the things we’ve been doing lately is curling up and watching your videos! She also gets really interested when I’m doing my workouts, so it’s unintentionally turned into quality time too - like, doing push-ups and giving her kisses or squatting to scratch her belly.

We lost our nineteen year old cat in June. She was an indoor cat her whole life. We miss her very much and are adopting a pair of kittens this afternoon and will keep them indoor as well. My husband, who has never had a new kitten (our girl was an adult when he and I got together) has been binge watching your videos.
I was suddenly worried my cats weren’t happy…literally just because I saw the title of the video. I’m really glad that when he was talking about catification I could EASILY say I surpassed what he was suggesting and I realized my cats are happy
I've never had an indoor cat before and Jackson's advice is so great. I feel bad that my cat keeps to our routine better than I do (he's at my wfh workstation by 11am even if I've got the day off) I do play every day now, and he definitely loves that. I am becoming a better cat guardian 😻
Cannot wait! Have just adopted an adorable and very energetic 19 month old panther. It has been more than couple of decades since I last had a youngster in the house and it is certainly an adventure.. His name is currently alternating between Bandit (= Smoky and the.. ) and You Little Shit.
I just recently adopted a feral non touchable female cat that turned out to be a scared tiny little 5 week old male kitten! His name alternates between Jensen, Heathen and you little shit! I think the last one is probably a very common name. Jensen is 8 months old now and I swear I don’t remember kittens being this rambunctious. Trouble waiting to happen. Hugs.
Cats need short names and it is important for them to know their names. So Bandit is perfect. Second option funny but really not nice and not a name. And b/c you seem nice I would vote for Bandit.
Please don’t name cats derogatory names. Jackson did a “My Cat from Hell” once in which the cat’s name was Bastard. Jackson was NOT happy. (Lousy owner. Every viewer was surprised Jackson just didn’t pick up the cat and leave.)
I am so glad we adopted two kittens. They definitely have their moments, but they get to "cat" together which I think is really fulfilling for them. If we're both at work, they still have someone to play with, and we all get to snuggle up together on the couch or bed which is especially nice in winter. This is the first time I've ever had more than one cat, and I don't think I would ever go back to having only one. Our two are almost 12 and I can't imagine life without them. I know they'll leave us one day, but I'm thankful we gave them this life and for the life they've given us.
Routine for sure. My almost 20 year old stinker wasn’t locked into a routine until I was able to get him transitioned to wet, good quality food (on your advice!). He loves his puréed wet food so much that he keeps trying to push his feeding time earlier and earlier n the morning. If I’m not up by 5:45, he wails continuously until I get up to feed him. But I love him.
"if the introduction is done well you're gonna be just fine" YES! My older cat doesn't seem to like other cats. But we did the introduction like you said in your book and now she tolerate the new cat haha. They can sleep next to each other (without touching), eat next to each other, and sometimes they play by running behind one another so that's a huge win!! The cat that I thought was gonna be an only cat for her entire life can tolerate her little sister and I'm so so happy with that. thank you Jackson.
When the weather is warmer, I’m going to let my kitties go out on my three season porch to get some fresh air. It’s screened in and reenforced for pets, so it’s perfect!
I’m in the UK, and my cats have been indoors for the last few years, having lost so many to the roads. They are happy and loved. 2 have never been outside, so don’t miss it, and the third is too lazy to care ! My latest baby has arrived having been outdoors, but is now of course, indoors. She seems happy, lies in the window, watching the world, and we play daily ! ❤l
Hey , my cat is 8 months old and always lived outside , transition to inside has not been easy. Do you have any tips ? There's not so much about this .. transition cats from outside to indoors 😊
I had a feral I took in and she was miserable being indoors 24/7. She’s my only cat who had outdoor privileges. She lived to 17 and died of old age. She could get out of harnesses - and collars. She was a little Houdini.
I've been taking my cat Sadako for walks in her harness since she was a kitten, and she loves it. Goes out at least four times a day. But this had an unexpected benefit. My roomate's cat, Jade, has always been an indoor cat who was terrified of beyond the door. However, seeing Sada going out and enjoying herself has encouraged Jade to follow out on the porch. She won't wear a harness, and is freaked out by grass, but she will beg to be picked up and carried around the yard.
I am fostering a cat that is accustomed to being able to go outside (via a yard), but I have a small apartment with no balcony or yard whatsoever, so I’m really thankful for this video! I really want to make sure this cat is still happy and doesn’t become bored inside.
I watching this video cause we just saved a cat from the street and we want him to be happy and live a long life.. we never thought of having a cat. I'm actually a dog lover . But Neo!! that's my cat, just made change my mind about cats!! 🥰
Watching from the UK, we have a very lively young cat who has recently become an indoor cat due to getting into too many fights with other cats, your tips from UA-cam and My Cat From Hell have been lifesavers because like you said, indoor cats aren’t as much of a thing here and we didn’t really know what to expect going into it. Much love and appreciation 💖🤘
It's funny but much of what Jackson says of keeping your cat curious, occupied and in touch with thier 'raw Cat', was how I grew up with family cats. Me and my siblings just played with them all the time. Made puzzles and games, asault courses all over the house. It just seemed natural. We were learning about play and problem solving together. And had 3 happy healthy cats.
We only really had dogs growing up. So I thought all cats were like in the movies and was scared of them until I got my cat she completely changed my opinion of cats Her name's Bambi and for a while I thought she didn't even know how to hiss til she hiss at another cat after they hiss at her😂
I’m so excited to get my enclosed deck built soon!! I’m going to build my Lucy cat what I call a jungle gym!! I just lost a precious furbaby named Bart after a diagnosis of kidney failure😢💔🕊but I also started volunteer work at a cat rescue called Second Chance For Cats ♥️ when the time is right I will adopt another precious kitty that needs a home♥️
Where I live, the winters are cold and dark, so I leave some lights on in the house and play quiet music for them when I leave for work.I also keep the heat the same temperature as if I was home, so they're warm and cozy. I can't prove it, but if think they appreciate it.
I live in a big city. It’s safer to keep my cat inside. He is a VERY happy and active boy. I play fetch with him 5 to 6 times a day. I also have screen doors on my front and back door. I leave them open most of the day. He LOVES to look out at the birds and squirrels, plus he gets fresh air. 😻😉❤️ Oh and he also has a “treat puzzle”.
When we lived in France (rural and also in suburban areas) I never had to worry about outside. Now in USA in a (nice) suburban area I’d never ever let our 2 rescue kittens out. Too many cars and coyotes, foxes, hawks etc. Plus the vet who had rescued them insisted they stay inside. I completely agree. They love the house. Lots of big windows for cat tv and staircases to run up and down and lots more besides. Can i really let them out the door and think I might never see them again??? No way.
Also Jackson, you have been such a big help to me. I got my first ever cat at 18, when I was kicked out of foster care and started living alone. They are such amazing animals and my feline friend has brought me so much happiness.
My Emmy has been an inside/outdoor cat for 18 years. She's a happy old girl now, and still really healthy. Doesn't roam as much, but loves to sun in the front garden. Of course, with winter coming, so she'll be indoors more. Here's hoping she's with us for years to come!
I just want any to say a big THANK YOU! I'm a first time cat owner (I've always had dogs) and before watching your videos knew absolutely NOTHING about cats. In fact, the first week I owned her I wasn't sure about what to expect! So I started reading about how to physically communicate with a cat and how to learn her language and watching your videos, I've learned so much. Her and I have bonded and I see how content she is now. So thank you for all your videos and for making them for people like me ❤️
My cat is harness trained and our whole little tiny house space is built around him having places to jump and climb. He has plenty of places to scratch. I open doors all the time and he's not dying to get out. He has plenty of opportunities. I only have one litterbox, but it's a tiny house.
I totally get you on the cultural differences of owning a cat. I grew up in Europe and all my cats were mostly outdoor cats. It was beautiful to see them as they would be “in the wild”, running and climbing trees. Now that I am in the US, however, my cat is 100% indoors, it depends on where you live, but I wouldn’t let him out and about, I am pretty sure he won’t come back safe.
We've been blessed with an old house that has huge beams and high ceilings! were building our kitten a huge cat wall super high amongst the beams so she literally has a playground at home!
My cat had to tough it out and suffered as a fully outdoor and partially feral cat for 5 years and he knows better that indoor = vastly superior easy life. Cats don’t like suffering starving and getting beat up by other cats out in the bushes they want warm cozy safety
same here, i used to have a very old tom cat who we took in because he kept showing up hurt from losing his territory fights. he was objectively happier having his territory in our house and never getting run out
Our last cat, Spike, was very fond of playing catch with wadded up balls of paper and when we slapped a water bottle cap back and forth between us under the bathroom door.
I’ve used wadded up very tight balls of aluminum foil. Also, those heavy spring-like plastic hair ties. We got a two inch yellow plastic ring in a Happy Meal years ago. Still his favorite toy to play fetch.
My kitten 'invented' fetch too! Her favorite toys are the cheap little mice and she carries them around in her mouth all the time (yes it is the cutest thing ever) and she started dropping them at my feet after I threw it for her so I could throw it again, she sits and looks at me and waits for real, she'll do it for 10+minutes straight
Thank you for the video. I have 11 cats and they are INDOOR cats. Healthier, longer lives and let's not ignore the devastating effects domestic cats have on local wildlife.
I like your point on companionship. And that it's much better to adopt 2 kittens instead of one. We did that, and the fun, the love and the companionship are duplicated, the work.. is the same
If we could just treat our cats the way we want to be treated ... regular brushing, massage, play time, chill time, cuddle time and meal time. Cats choose you but we can always try to keep them happy, just watch them to see what they like !! Love your videos and thank you
Thank you for your expertise about cats. I have learned a lot from you and appreciate your love for cats. So many people don’t like cats and want to harm them in some way. Which is why I keep my 2 cats (17 yr old male and 11 yr old male) inside unless I’m in my fenced yard that them. They love our porch in warm weather too. Thank you again
Thanks Jackson! Adding stucture and playtime seems to be helping tremendously. Our 11yo male burmese has kept me awake for YEARS. You saying "dog owners have a leash, cat owners have toys" opened my eyes. I'll rather take 4x15min or whatever from my day to play with our two cats rather than lose hours of sleep every night. And only feeding after play. I'll keep doing this experiment and see where it takes our family! Otherwise we have plenty of climbing, scrathing and hiding possibilities in our apartment.
We tried for 3 weeks to get them to understand the clicker. But it just didnt click 😄 (sorry bad joke) Now we teach them trick with just treats and it works fine ^^
I live in Australia and many city councils impose a 24-hour cat curfew to protect indigenous wildlife... Jackson’s info is invaluable to making our cats live a healthy life indoors...
I’m from the uk and have two indoor cats. We had one (Taz) then got Tiz to keep him company. Ours are indoor because we live next to the Motorway (Highway) they are beyond happy, really affectionate and just content :) but obviously I want them to be that little bit happier 💕 Happy Pets Happy Life 🐾
Because I love your vids and you've been helping me with my kittens, my husband calls you my cat whisperer. He says that stating "what did the cat whisperer say?" You're the best!
We took in a family members cat that needed a new home, but kept her away from the other cats, because one of our cats was coming to the end of her long life. When she passed the dogs and the younger cat became very depressed. We waited a couple of weeks and opened the basement door. After two months or so, the young cat ventured downstairs and stayed there to visit the new cat. The younger cat has suddenly matured and seems happier and calmer. Having another cat for him, really made a difference. No more solo cats for us.
the other reason to keep cats in is to protect local wildlife populations. Cats DECIMATE small rodent and bird populations, and don't eat most of what they catch (probably for the best but still).
Love watching these 🥹 I watch them all day w my cat lmao. She's the sweetest little ball of light in my life. She keeps me sober because I know she relies on me. 6 months sober BECAUSE OF MY CAT.
I don’t have a cat, but I’m using your videos to help keep my roommates kitten happy to the best of my ability.
That is so fantastic of you!!
Just a thought - maybe get another kitten as company and playmates for each other. Jackson again mentioned getting 2 kittens together. Great for them and such fun for the humans.

Plenty of nasty people about that will be cruel to domestic cats if given the opportunity.

One of my three cats is always desperate to go outside. Nearly every attempt at a cat-harness walk has ended in escape, followed by a panic-induced cat recovery session (ahh!). I've decided cat walks are too risky to continue, but... I'm glad to say we're constructing a catio! Hopefully our little adventurer will be pleased with this compromise.
poor thing. I feel sorry for every cat enclosed in an appartment. But still better than being in a sanctuary
Build a few cat activity walls
If your cats escaping you either have the wrong harness or it's fitted wrong. It took me a couple tries to find the right harness.

@@CynthiaPrice79 that is horrible... Good that your cats stay indoors now☺️
Same. I don't have cats yet (planning on having in a few years when me and my partner will live on our own) and it's really sad when the cats (or dogs really) are just left alone to run outside and there is little to no catification done inside the house. The resulting aggression (from not having territory) is just heartbreaking.
My guardian walks me every day outdoors 😽
@@CynthiaPrice79 If someone had done this to any of my cats, I would make sure they have a permanent reminder not to repeat ie loss of teeth/wired up jaw.

Didn't plan it that way but I am very happy just the same😂😂😂
My kitten is an indoor cat, but is harness-trained. That way, he gets to enjoy the outdoors in a safe, supervised way ^_^

Both our cats hate outdoors! One is a rescue and the other adopted. They enjoy cat tv better than actually being outside.
I adopted my cat, who was close to starving when she was found. Although the vet reckoned she was two, I genuinely thought she was perhaps five or six months as she was terribly thin and small. Now she lives very happily as an indoor cat. 13 years later and she is a content and secure cat.
They judge based on teeth apparently but I could be wrong
When i got my cat i was told she was 6-7 months, the vet said 2 yrs, i think she was 5-6 yrs old. Ive had her 7 yrs now and i can't imagine not having her in my life
i can relate, i rescued an scpa cat that they were going to put down in a few days. 22, yes 22 years later she is still with me but sadly was recently diagnosed with early kidney disease. she gets a pre a pro biotic kidney powder supplement in her soft food and she has improved for now.

Also...too much ash in the hard food causes bladder stones
My old boy was terrified of the outdoors. He would love looking out of the window, but as soon as he had to go out (to go to the vet) his hair would just fall out and he would moan meow haha
Just had to have him put to sleep.
I'm sorry....❤
I have had 18 cats. So clearly I have watched over several deaths. The worst thing I have done was to keep them going once I realized that they were not well. Cats are amazingly tough, and they will not show pain or discomfort. Recently my 16 year old cat began to show signs of sickness, and the vet said that she was deathly ill. After many previous experiences, I was wise to the event, and I had the vet give her the shots to take her life before, thank God, she really started to suffer. I will never again prolong my cat’s life just so that I can spend more time with him or her. It is very important for us to recognize our responsibility in this matter.
😢😢😢❤
Thank you

good for you being involved

My indoor/outdoor cat lived for 23 years. I now have a 4 year old indoor only cat since I’m now in an apartment. Thank you for this video!
It’s ok keep your babies safe. I’m in the city and I’d never let my babies out because of coyotes, strays, and constant speeders.
Lol very similar got a rescue and she is indoor , only goes in the garden with me and that's it .
I can't imagine losing either of them
I'm so grateful you exist, dude. And I'm even more grateful that you share your knowledge with us.

I'm in the UK. Outdoor cats are more likely to contract FIV from cat fights...doesn't matter where in the world you live. If you really want to let your cat outdoors, why not cat proof your garden.

Interesting point. And yes a different cultural perspective 👏

@@annabeinglazy5580 totally.
❤❤❤
Aww, that's so sweet!!!
We just got a new kitten for our 3 year old and it’s the best thing we’ve done! They are best friends!
I adopted a bonded pair and it has been such a benefit to us. It's no more expensive or time consuming and the cats benefit greatly. They’re almost 7 years old now and they still curl up together and groom each other. It's beautiful
LOVE this! It's important to know that indoors cats need more interaction and stimulation. Thanks for sharing this, it's really great!
You my fave
@@Rattlsnke fixing your pets is for the best. Fix your male too unless you want him to keep harassing your female.
Lost too many cats to Coyotes living in the Arizona Desert. We keep them in now. We adopted a stray a year ago he is sooo happy to be inside.
Coyotes are everywhere these days, even cities, thanks to the outward push of the suburbs into their territory.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade are coyotes present in az ? I was thinking of moving there but i keep hearing more n more things that seem like a negative to live in az
@@miti342 I'm nowhere near there, it's a national issue throughout much of the country.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade oh- I’m not sure if we have them in my state but that’s scary to think I wanted to move to az and there’s just wild coyotes? And the gov ain’t doing nun bt that ?
I'm in the UK and my cat lives in my one bedroom apartment and she's very happy. She previously lived on the streets
Good for both of you!! So glad you are happy together!!!❤
Hugs.
Lol
Cats need short names and it is important for them to know their names. So Bandit is perfect. Second option funny but really not nice and not a name. And b/c you seem nice I would vote for Bandit.
My Kit's nickname is "Doodle". He doesn't realize it's another name for poop.
"if the introduction is done well you're gonna be just fine"
YES!
Congratulations!!
My wife and i just adopted a kitten , your videos helped me so much. Sending love from Australia ❤
I had a feral I took in and she was miserable being indoors 24/7. She’s my only cat who had outdoor privileges. She lived to 17 and died of old age. She could get out of harnesses - and collars. She was a little Houdini.
We love these lil guys
I call one of my cats houdini as well due to same reason 😻
I've been taking my cat Sadako for walks in her harness since she was a kitten, and she loves it. Goes out at least four times a day. But this had an unexpected benefit. My roomate's cat, Jade, has always been an indoor cat who was terrified of beyond the door. However, seeing Sada going out and enjoying herself has encouraged Jade to follow out on the porch. She won't wear a harness, and is freaked out by grass, but she will beg to be picked up and carried around the yard.
Try a "kitty cart". It is a stroller for pets.
@@thenorthernspinozist397 I totally agree with the pet stroller. I’ve got one for my dog and it’s amazing!
@@thenorthernspinozist397 Thanks, that's a great tip!
that’s so cute!
I am fostering a cat that is accustomed to being able to go outside (via a yard), but I have a small apartment with no balcony or yard whatsoever, so I’m really thankful for this video! I really want to make sure this cat is still happy and doesn’t become bored inside.
GET HI TOYS. HE' LL BE GREAT INDOORS!
Lovely message and all, but indoor cats are most certainly a regular thing in the uk lol
So I thought all cats were like in the movies and was scared of them until I got my cat she completely changed my opinion of cats
Her name's Bambi and for a while I thought she didn't even know how to hiss til she hiss at another cat after they hiss at her😂
I’m so excited to get my enclosed deck built soon!!
Oh and he also has a “treat puzzle”.
Kia Arena Do you not mean, you are owned by your Cat? Lol Smiles. And the best to you and your Cat
Have you tried white ping pong balls? Our cats love them
@@Hanmacx our other cats loved them, but Spike was disabled and they skittered away too fast for him.
@@Hanmacx ty! I’ll pick some up.
11! Omg
I like your point on companionship. And that it's much better to adopt 2 kittens instead of one. We did that, and the fun, the love and the companionship are duplicated, the work.. is the same
"Feline sundials that they are...". So true, wise one. So true...
Clicker training will change your life, honestly- we need it. That’s an easy peasy way to build a common language with an animal.
We tried for 3 weeks to get them to understand the clicker. But it just didnt click 😄 (sorry bad joke)
Now we teach them trick with just treats and it works fine ^^
Just adopted two kittens and your videos have been soo helpful!!
Such an important point - wish JG had emphasized this as even more important than the happiness of cats.
@@Wee162 I think he's emphasizing the reason most people would actually change for. Lots of people just don't care about wildlife
@@Kuhboose1 Which is a problem. People SHOULD care more about wildlife. :( It's so important to our ecosystem.
Agreed! I wish he had emphasized it too
If I recall correctly, domestic cats are responsible for about a dozen bird species going extinct over the past century or so.
Love watching these 🥹 I watch them all day w my cat lmao. She's the sweetest little ball of light in my life. She keeps me sober because I know she relies on me. 6 months sober BECAUSE OF MY CAT.
