We had a cat that got a cactus thorn stuck in her paw, when we finally discovered what happened her paw was infected and she was limping. We smothered her with attention while she healed, spoiled her rotten. Then, down the road whenever we had to give a stern “No” for something she would lift her paw and start limping. LOL, that was several years ago honey, we know your tricks! (Of course she got hugs, but we knew what she was about!)

My one cat Daisy I have to keep away from my prickly pear cactus cause she loves I mean loves rubbing her face on plants. She once rubbed her face on it while I had her outside and I spent half an hour with a tweezers pulling all of the tiny spines out of her ear and the top of her head.
My cats now have a catio so when theyre outside theyre safe and cant reach any of the cacti.

When i was younger my family had a kitten who jumped in the freezer and my mom didn't notice and closed it.... Luckily my dearly departed (old age) best cat ever, Mig, sat in front of that freezer and yowled until I came to check out what was up. I heard a faint mew, opened the freezer and got the kitten. She got lots of warm cuddles, and i will FOREVER be grateful that my wonderful cat Mig decided to sound the alarm to save a kitten that she didn't even particularly like... The Mig was a hero and my best friend. Im lucky to have known her.

Get yourself a confident rescue cat who's lived outside and seen some shit. You won't have to wrap a cat like that in bubble wrap - he'll mostly take care of himself, and he'll do it well. Just provide food, water, heat and medical care. And cuddles, of course, but only when he's amenable.

"Toddlers that can reach the ceiling" is the most terrifying sounding thing.
*Edit:* You can add inside furniture to that list. The other night, my new cat got bored and climbed in my dresser. I saw her sink into a drawer that was partially open and thought "oh, she's laying down." Then, I walked over and realized she crawled BEHIND the drawer. Everything was fine because I saw her go in, but if I'd just walked in the room and saw the drawer open, I would've gone to close it, which wouldn't have ended well.

happened to one of mine... i opened the drawer, turned to put down what i took out and then tried to close it. it wouldn't go all the way in, so i put my hand behind thinking something from the drawer fell behind, only to feel a bunch of warm fur -.- i had to take out the drawer to get her out because she wouldn't leave. she was not hurt because i didn't push harder, but what got me worried most of all is that she didn't meow or make a sound, even when i first tried to close it. now i never turn my back on any open furniture because she also loves sneaking into closets. the other one is not interested in such things at all.

I let her smell it and she'll usually give me a look like I'm tricking her and eating something else cause it doesn't smell good to her. The only thing I'm really worried about is dairy and bread (she's obsessed with all types of bread and dough). Still if I'm not in the room I'm an anxious cat mom and just have to put everything away

You might add that waste paper baskets and the trash in the bathroon and sewing room/nook may contain dangerous items that the cats will fish out. Aside from thread, floss, pins, there are those plastic capital ' I 'shaped things used to attach price tage to clothes are just deadly, like fishbones but they will never digest. All these items should go into closed trash containers and get booted ASAP.

He is totally right about the furniture topic. I had just adopted my beautiful pure black long haired baby boy named Sithis, I went to work and when I came home. I saw my other two cats running around but didn’t see my newest baby. We searched and searched until I heard the faintest meow. I looked under my bed and the fabric lining that was attached to my bed frame was wrapped around his little neck. He was still alive but barely and we finally got him out. So I rip out any fabric under coating on all my furniture because of that scare with my baby. But the good news is he survived and is happily turning 1 in two weeks ☺️

My cat loves coffee mostly for the smell, but if i put my rice milk and a little sugar in it to cool it down he sometimes acts like he wants to drink it and I have to take it away. He will drink tea if people leave it though and water ( which at least ice water is safe) and some juices. Which I try mot to let him have much cause sugar but if it's natural and a safe fruit for cats and I see him drinking the melted juice ice I usually let him finish and take it as a sign he needs his water bowl rinsed and refilled again. (Like for example I drink pom and let him smell it when it was nearly down to ice and he stuck his foot in it so I couldn't drink it and stole the rest of the like sip and a half of juice and melting ice :P at least pomegranate isn't outright dangerous though. It's mot healthy to think that way. We'd never leave our bed if we did. All you need to do is be aware of the dangers and that you don't have them on show in your home. Don't buy recliner chairs. Don't let your cat eat chocolate.. etc. Please don't let fear ruin the point of having a pet. Some parents spend their lives obsessing about protecting the children that the child becomes a prisoner if sorts and grows up to be a fearful and unhappy child. Protect your cat but nothing will go wrong if you use Common sense. I was so worried when my cats first went outside. I live in a safe area for cats but I still worried. But keeping a cat inside that does not need to be is awful and the garden us the furthest they go. Have to watch what plants are planted and the machinery and bonfire or compost. But they love being outside so it's easy to catproof the home and garden.

In case anyone is watching this video and is having a panic attack about adopting a cat - take a deep breath. Jackson brings up a ton of good points about stuff to keep away from your cats, but at the end of the day, you basically just need to put stuff away and make sure everything has its place. As soon as you're done with your cleaning products, put them away. Check the dryer before putting clothes in and/or starting it up. Put sharp objects away when you're done using them. If you limit the amount of chaos in your home, you and your cat will be okay.

This is an amazing video Jackson! Most people think I am so over-protective of my cats because I don't have house plants, I don't burn candles, I don't shut doors and I am paranoid about threads and rubber bands on the floor. I haven't used curling ribbon for many years after we were very lucky to have one of our Persians pass a long piece on her own. We were unable to use rubber bath mats for about 15 years because one cat was addicted to eating them! I had to use the glue-down flower things! Cats are such weirdos. One of my daughter's Bengals fell out of a window while lying in the window well. The screen's spline (the rubber string-like material that holds most screens in their frames) popped out with her weight against it, the screen separated from the frame, and the cat fell from the first story window- unseen and unnoticed for some time. She had never been outdoors before so she panicked and got lost for a day but was eventually found in the eaves of a neighbor's shed. Despite a cat's amazing ability to right themselves in a fall, second story falls are the most dangerous for them because they are not in the air long enough to complete the twisting motion they use to right themselves. After my daughter's incident made me realize how unreliable window screens are, I now keep second story windows open a maximum of 2 inches so my cats simply can't fit into the window.

I wish I’d seen a video like this, with a warning about blinds, when I got my kitten in May. He almost died by strangulation/hanging when he got tangled in our blinds about a month ago. I was outside doing some yard work when my 5 year old son rushes out of the house frantically, saying that Rocky was choking and couldn’t breathe. I ran inside, grabbed scissors, (I wasn’t about to waste precious time trying to untangle him for the sake of saving some cheap blinds) and cut him down. I don’t even know how he managed to do it, because it wasn’t the long cords he got caught in, it was actually the short cords that go in between the slats in order for them to be able to be pulled up. Somehow, he managed to get that super tiny amount of cord DOUBLE wrapped around his neck. It was awful, he was nearly dead. His head was rolling because he’d lost all control of it, his eyes were rolling back, he was limp, etc. Luckily, he perked back up as soon as I cut him down, and has had no long term effects. But it was so scary. Thank god we were home, and my little boy knew he needed to come get me immediately to save Rocky’s life 💔

After owning cats for all 19 years of my life, I’ve seen some things...
    1. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE FOOD YOU ARE FEEDING YOUR PETS. I cannot stress this enough. We lost a cat to crystals he had formed in his kidneys a few years ago. When we took him to the vet, the doctor said the primary cause of crystals and stones forming in cats is low-quality ingredients in their food. By-products, fillers, excessive grains are all things which should be avoided!!!! PLEASE look out for your animals and watch every ingredient in everything you feed them. So many animals suffer from their owner’s ignorance and lack of judgement... it is truly sad. Don’t wait until you lose your cat to realize how important a good, quality diet is!!!!
    2. We once lost a kitten to our recliner. She was playing with her brothers and got stuck under the metal and was strangled before we could realize what was happening.
    3. I had another kitten get stuck in our artificial Christmas tree. He was climbing up in it and all of a sudden we hear loud yelping and see the poor thing got his leg stuck in one of the pieces of twine that secures the branches. Took a while to get him out, and he was limping a bit afterward, but he eventually felt better the next day.
    4. I had an elderly cat once escape outside. He was mentally disabled and had constant seizures, so he was a bit more vulnerable than the other cats we had. In the middle of the night one day, my sister woke up to the sound of loud cat screams coming from outside. She ran out and saw two German Shepherds carrying him in their mouth. She chased them away but unfortunately we ended up losing him bc the damage those dogs had caused him was far too great. She carried him inside and the poor baby passed away that night in his bed. (This also happened when I was fairly young, so for years I absolutely hated dogs and was just traumatized from what they did to our cat)
    5. One of my favorite cats I’ve ever had unfortunately passed away due to being poisoned. We don’t know exactly how it happened, but I’m pretty sure our neighbor had set rat poison outside and she must’ve infested it one way or another. My sister and I sat with her in our backyard as she squirmed and drooled and it was one of the saddest moments I’ve ever experienced.
    6. One of our cats once got bit by a big garden spider and had uncontrollable drooling for days. We eventually took him to the vet to get some medicine and he was all better.
    7. Other cats can be really dangerous too! We took in a couple cats from a friend of our who could no longer take care of them, but they really did not mesh well with our cats that we already had. It was clear they had some behavioral issues, as they would constantly corner our other cats, fight with them, bite them, sneak up on them, hoard food, you name it. I eventually reached my breaking point with them once when I was awoken by the sound of them fighting and came out to an unusual silence. I looked around the house to find my beloved kitty, who I’ve had for so many years, huddled in the corner under the dining table, shaking, absolutely terrified, and her paws COVERED in blood. When I tell you I lost my shit.... I legitimately had it with the new cats. I cleaned up my poor girl, took her to my room, brought her food in there with me, and took the two cats to the shelter the next day. I’m all about being patient with cats and trying to understand them, but this girl was (and still is) my BABY, I’ve had her for 7 years now and she is my absolute ride or die, so when I saw her covered in blood, hurt, scared, shaking, in MY house, the home that’s supposed to protect her and shelter her and be her safe haven... I could not call myself her mom without getting rid of the cats that had done that to her. End of story.

Thank you, Jackson, for making this video. My emotional support dog recently had emergency surgery after consuming the fleece part of one of those cat dancer toys. They took over three feet of the fleece string from her stomach. The doctor said that if I'd left it another day, she'd have died. Now I look at all toys with an eye toward safety. I foster kittens for my local shelter and tend to collect toys. Now a lot of them, like the cat dancers, only come out during supervised playtime.

When I was making my documentary "Adorable Cats of Persia, 1," about street cats, I noticed so many cats limping, blinded in one eye, or badly scratched. A few even had their skin and fur hanging. Some of them were because of fighting. But as this very good video clip discusses, they are not always very careful animals. For example, sometimes they totally zoomed out that they were sitting in the middle of the street and a car was approaching.

My mother’s friend lost one of her cats because she wanted to get out through a tilted window but got stuck. Idk how common those kind windows are in America but in Europe they’re pretty common. My husband and I foster cats and I always give "new parents" a huge list of all these dangers. Yes, some people think it is excessive to the point of neurosis but it covers all the things you have mentioned because we've seen most all these dangers in action, too. As a person commented, drawers are another bad one - dresser and kitchen drawers as cats will get in behind the open drawer and then get squished as you close it. Another thing that happened to me first hand was, as I opened the dish washer, between the bottom of the door and kick plate a gap became available, a kitten crawled half way in, I closed the door and squashed her! It was terrifying. I thought I had broken her ribs or crushed her organs. we rushed her to the vet and she was okay but that scared me so badly, I never forgot the lesson. Also, toilets - never leave the lid open. Kittens can fall in and not be able to get out, thus drowning.

Will definitely need to take her to the vet soon to see what we can do for her. Also, as kittens both of my cats have gotten stuck in the fridge when my father-in-law was not looking. I am missing two things that I know happen more than you'd think (from my experience working for animal protection services). One: any 2 story or higher apartment should have windows and balconies secured somehow (I have a net for my balcony). Cats can land on their feet, yes, but from a great height they will break their paws and possibly their jaw because their head smashes on the ground from the impact. It isn't pretty.
Second thing: tilted windows. The ones that let you open them partially at the top. Cats - doesn't matter if they are indoor or outdoor cats - will sometimes try to escape through the V shaped cracks and get stuck. They slowly suffocate. The more they struggle, the further down they slide and that's the end of them. There are window guards for these kinds of windows.

Now we have a new kitten and she disappeared for a bit and it got eerily quiet. We get hyperly aware of her quietness because she's a semi-hyper one 😅 We found her under the recliner sleeping. We realized immediately it was an accident waiting to happen, and there is no real way to close the openings, so now no one in the house sits on it. We placed a block underneath to stop it from rocking at least, but wow.... we didn't even think she was that curious to make a secret bed in it.

Id be curious what you would suggest if the cat in your engine compartment doesn't want to come out. That's how we just wound up with our little city kitty. She jumped up in the warm engine compartment and refused to come out(this happened at work),I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked, I didn't have the resources at work. I told her to please stay right where she was, said a prayer to God and had to go home(I couldn't stay longer or take my engine out, she was in there for hours). We got home and I heard her meowing and thanked God for keeping her safe, grabbed some chicken and got to work to getting her out. Now she's inside, in the warmth and absolutely loving life. She's full of spunk and has such a personality. She fussed at me when she's ready for bed and tells me about her day, but the rest of the time she's running around like a mad woman, getting into all kinds of trouble but she's so smart and knows what she's allowed and not, doesn't mean she doesn't forget or still try to get away with it lol. She came into our lives at the right time for sure.

@@barb8046 Yep, I close the dryer door and then go count the cats (there's only 2 so it's quick) before I'll turn it on!

Be watchful with fireplace inserts, too. Many have a top surface that cats can jump onto when it is hot. Since it is not always hot they may not avoid it. That happened to my kitten when she was playing chase with her brother. All 4 of her pads had blister burns. Remember to be watchful when there is a fire in it.

me making cable protectors while watching: yeah... we're gonna need WAY more than this...
Seriously though, THANK YOU so much for these videos. I've been watching like crazy to prepare for my new kitten in three weeks and I realize I have SO much more preparing to do. It makes me feel much better knowing I'm learning all I can to give her the best home as possible. Now, to figure out how to avoid needing to fish her out from the sofa bed... I've done it before and it is NOT easy.

Try to keep a sheet under the couch cushions, as a block to getting to the bed (from the top) and another, king size sheet to COVER the ENTIRE foldaway bed, when it's mostly folded up, cover EVERYTHING, only THEN fold it into the space. Yeah, found a kitten, years ago fostering, had gotten INSIDE the couch, in between the FOLDS of sofa bed mattress, ALL while folded up! My roomie SAT ON HER. She survived, thank goodness for cushions. I then developed the king size sheet method - wrapping up the halfway folded bed in a sheet. I used to use tacks to keep the sheet in place. GOOD ON YA for looking ahead. You're a good cat daddy! ❤️

One of my kittens ended up getting into the washing machine! Thankfully she managed to get out of the part where the water was so she didn't drown, but it was so frightening. She was okay in the end, and she's full-grown now with no more washer incidents!

Thank you for this video. I haven't had cats since I was little, and they were outdoor cats. Now, I'm about to get an indoor one to help with my depression. This video is very helpful.
