I've just been aggressively adopted by an outdoor stray. He keeps trying to get into my house, so I can't help but be amazed at the timing of this video. I think this might be a sign.
I ran a half marathon in an ice storm. I got home so tired and cold I was in tears. I pulled off all of my wet clothes and curled up in a blanket and shivered so hard it hurt. I couldn’t stop shivering. But then, my brand new rescue cat who still didn’t 100% trust me jumped up and curled herself up behind my knees and purred until I was toasty warm and fell right to sleep. After a three hour nap she was still there - warm and purring. She will always be the cat that saved my life.
I was 27 years old when my Husband brought home a kitty for a present for me. I had no idea how to take care of a cat. I called my Mom in a panic. I think she laid it out real simple for me. She told me a cat has to eat just like you do, so you supply the food. It comes out the other end just like it does for you so you need to supply the toilet. Then just love it, and you will both teach each other as time goes on, pay attention. That got me by when there was no internet to refer to. We taught each other. I must have done something right because my first cat lived to be 20 years old. My second cat lived to be 22 years old. I am now on my 5th cat. 43 years of cats and counting. Yes, I am old now but have set things in place so that when I die she will not go to a shelter. They have taught me a lot in all those years, but the most important thing they taught me was love. I have cremated all of my cats when they died and had nice boxes made for them. When I die, I have asked my Granddaughter to place them in my coffin. I'm taking them with me. Laugh if you will but I love my cats. They are better than people for the most part. Until that day comes, they await my arrival at the rainbow bridge.
this is so cute i teared up on that last sentence :( you are such a good cat owner even though you're a stranger i just know you're a really good person please continue to live healthy and life to the fullest!
My best advice to a new cat owner is don't assume your cat doesn't like a certain toy or thing you've bought them just because they don't play with it or seem interested in it within the first few weeks of adoption. My cat Venus was super loving and adjusted to our apartment within just a few hours after we adopted her, but she had zero interests in the toys we got her. She just want to be petted and cuddled. Then one day she just decided she liked the toys and wanted to play with them. I just kept showing them to her each day and tried playing with different things for about five minutes each so she didn't get bored or annoyed. You just have to give them time to adjust to everything and let them do things in their own time. Once they realize you are their human and this is their home and THEIR toys, they will start to come out of their shell more.
I just found a 6 week old cat in a trash can on a really warm day. He barely meowd, but I picked him up, and brought him home. I put down some water and he immediately started drinking. I took him to the vet, cheked his health, thaks God it was OK . I've never been a cat person, but after I saved his life, he was such a cutie. So we fall in love with each other. Now, he learned how to sit, stay and if I call him, he come. He is very clever and I would do anything for him. Thanks for your videos, they helped a lot at the beggining!
This is a great list. I once got a stray kitten as a gift in college. I didn't want a cat, but it had no place else to go. I was so poor, I could barely get anything for it. I used an old plastic bin as a litter box and went outside and got some dirt for it. Later on I found sand in various places for free. I put old newspapers on the bottom as a liner. We put an old board under a window using some shelf hangers. And put an old towel on that. He loved to sit there because it was over our steam heating. We eventually got a little harness to take our cat for a walk outside. Back then, this was considered very unusual. He wanted to go outside so badly, I just had to get him used to a leash. I just wanted to say that, even though cats should have all these things, they don't have to be new or expensive. You can even make a lot of these things. If you give a stray cat shelter, you are saving its life. Eventually, my cat went to a better home than I could give it.
I have become an evangelist for Sustainably Yours litter! NO sticking between toes. Falls away like clean beach sand. No licking clay litter bits to gum up cat innerds.
My cats and I have a bedtime routine every night. First, we play for 20 minutes or so. Then, we head upstairs to bed, for a brushing first, then some treats, then bedtime snuggles. My cats actually know where to go when I tell them it’s bedtime. And, they also get antsy when its a little later than normal and I am still downstairs. We’ve been doing this for almost three years, since the day I rescued them and brought them home. They are both special needs, so it took a while longer for them to warm up to me, but I kept at it, and now, three years later, it is our bedtime ritual. I think it has not only helped to reinforce the fact that I will never hurt them or leave them, and it has just brought us closer together overall. Plus, its the best part of my day every single day!
That is so awesome! Like kids! And yes, cats can totally tell time and love their routines. I got an elderly cat from my grandma’s house a few months ago and while I have a terrible sleep schedule, it seems my grandma goes to bed at 10pm and wakes up at 6:30am, because that is when the cat tries to physically herd me to bed (she grew up w/a mini Aussie & thinks she’s a dog), and when she meows louder and louder, closer and closer to my face, to wake me up in the morning. If I’m stubborn, she’ll keep going (off and on) until I finally get up, even if it’s not until noon. 🤦🏼♀️ At that point, we’re both frustrated. Smh.
unpopular opinion: the couch is the best scratching post. I have a small tree but the couch is where we spend most time with the cats so I feel like they should be allowed to scratch it as it makes them feel at home ☺️
We have two dogs! And one day we opened our door to let them go outside and a freaking small black cat walked up the porch, came into our house, and went up on a shelf and started rolling around, got comfy and looked at us purring!!!!! She adopted us and know I have to figure out everything I can about loving this cute thing that stole our dog loving hearts!
My late cat was a vertical scratcher, he had the door of our shed torn to bits so I nailed a fresh row of wooden planks to it every month or so and he'd get super excited every time fresh wood went on! His tail would go all fluffy when he'd rake his claws down it! He was such a good man, he never ever scratched the furniture in the house. I miss him so 😭
We adopted two cats from Greece but we live in The Netherlands. Guys, adopt, don't shop! The warmth you get from adopted cats, wether it is in a shelter near your city or like us overseas is something you can't put into words. I love them both, I spoil them both and man, I get so much love back from them! Love my fur babies
@@tonia1236 No need to say sorry, it is a good question! We went to Greece on holiday, and the stray cats who live there were so cute and loveable, we wanted to adopt them all!! Once we got home, I searched for shelters who adopted those cats and we wanted to give them their forever home. So thats the reason. Again, no hard feelings! Thanks for asking!
You are a true cat warrior. Once the Coronavirus situation has settled down, I think that people looking to adopt from overseas should seriously consider rescuing cats from the Asian meat trade. I know it's not glamorous or fun, but after watching a number of videos about this topic, I was heartbroken. These poor little creatures are poorly fed, get little or no water, no vet care, are kept stuffed in cages on top of each other, and are handled in a very rough manner as if they were inanimate objects instead of lovable living things. And that's before these cages with huge numbers of cats are transported hundreds of miles to wherever it is they kill them for human consumption. I think they go to open air markets where restaurant owners buy them to be killed on site. The weather in these countries is often very hot and humid, so some of them die in transit from lack of food, dehydration, physical injuries, and exhaustion. They are a lot luckier than the ones who survive, but are tortured to death by heartless traders and restaurant owners. I won't go into what they do, as it's too heartbraking. Some of the cats are strays, but many are stolen from loving owners. The supply chain and methods vary from place to place, but from what I read, the trades exist in China, South Korea, and Vietnam. I think there are also some in Thairland and Indonesia. While there are a number of great people trying to help, most of them are focused on the dogs, who go through the same things. So I'd really like to see Jackson's team undertake some form of rescue project to save the cats, as there seem to be very few people helping them for some reason. Please accept my apologies for taking the fun and excitement out of adopting cats, but I felt I needed to bring this issue to your attention. I'm thankful to be living in Australia, where my cat will always be safe from those heartless psychopaths. While I understand that humans eat meat, I don't understand the inhumane treatment and torture.
@@mariskings understood! Thanks for answering! :) I adopted my little girl right next to my home. I'm from Brazil, so when I read your comment I was thinking: aren't there any foster cats in Netherlands?
@@tonia1236 I’m from the Netherlands too and I can confirm that there aren’t that many adoptable cats in shelters here (except for kitten season, but they usually go into foster care).
Of my cats Oskar with the long thick hair really needs regular brushing. And he's willing to knife you if you do it. I can do the top sides while he's eating, if he's hungry enough. But the undersides are surrounded with sharp things.
im a child, not overly experienced- but i have volunteered at shelters, and have several cats! and what i found out is some cats (not all. some dont care) like their food dishes a bit more shallow, so their whiskers dont bend when they try and eat.
Darkshizumaru some cats don’t mind! Also a lot of cats are bad at drinking enough water so it’s always good to provide more wet food then kibble. But find out what your kitty prefers! One of mine sticks his head all the way down, the other won’t go past the rim. Its fun to find out what your cat prefers, it’s like a little scavenger hunt!! :)
Yes. That makes sense. My daughter's cat was getting finicky about her steel bowl. (A good 1) so I didn't know what to do. Its my 1st cat. We found her a wide, low sided bowl and no trouble since. I wished I'd thought to check out cat channels earlier. All's well, it worked out for us. Thanks for putting your idea out for others. Blessings
My fiancé taped together a bunch of cardboard boxes and made short tunnels and look/ paw holes. It’s about 2 feet high at its tallest. Our kitten LOVES it! No need to spend lots of money for lots of fun 😻. Thanks for all you do for our kitties!
I really respect he has a good recommendation for kittens. I respect people who can say "You know what, I'm not the expert here, but I know exactly who you should know." And encouraging information to spread and helping out another channel is overall really great. Good job man
This is a great checklist. I think cats have different personalities, just like humans have different personalities. As a blind person I personally like the backpack style cat carriers. Because when you’re blind you already have one hand tied up with your cane or guide dog so having that backpack carrier can really free up your hands. I also think a collar with a bell is a great idea so you can hear where they are. Especially with kittens because they have a way of getting into everything.
you are so right and alot of people don't understand all cats are different my cat is not a cuddler doesn't like to be held but knows when I am sad or anxious! he will sit at my feet and purr just watching me! no regrets on getting a cat! nice comment
Yes, i know the bell or even collars are a bit controversial, but it depends on situations! I have one cat that grew up wearing collars with bells. When I get her a new one she chirps and when she doesn't have a bell she gets a bit fussy. My other cat? Hates them. In your case the bell is a solution to a problem! So there's cats that hate them, like them or need them.
I have a bell on my kitten’s collar because he blends into his surroundings when it gets dark, and I want to know where he is so that I don’t accidentally step on him
@@DFloyd84 cats shouldn't be outdoors in unenclosed environments and bells don't help would-be-prey. cats with a bell and those without one catch the same number of animals.
A few more tips: - get a more “plate-shaped” food bowl for your cats to avoid whisker fatigue. - if u get them young introduce them to AS MUCH AS U POSSIBLY CAN to get them used to things straight away. Touching paws, looking at teeth, having strangers pet them, vacum, music, being picked up, loud sneezes (looking at u dad) etc. - when u feed them or give them treats repeat their name constantly as u do so. U teach them their name like this and to respond when u call it. - don’t feed them when you’re cooking/eating. - for small kittens keep the toilet lids closed and make sure to plug up holes they can disappear into (dishwashers, pipes, drains etc.) - give them a place to hide (cat box/bed/carrier and never force them out of that space or put ur hands in. Let them feel like nothing (not even u) can get to them there. (But make sure u can get to them in an emergency). So when they get scared and hide u know where to find them. This saved my cats when there was a fire in my building cos I knew exactly where to find them and how to get them out. - play with them before bed time so u can get some sleep and they don’t wake u up. - keep strings and small things they can swallow out of reach. They will swallow them. If your cat DOES swallow a string NEVER pull it out. Call a vet, u can hurt them. - there are little plugs u can get which releases a calming scent in the house, this helps cats with anxiety and could help them adjust to ur home. (Make sure to plug it in a few days before they arrive). ♥️ enjoy ur sweet bean.
During pandemic I have been adopted by a cat. It was my neighbors', but he got sick and they didn't take care of it. I couldn't see it, so I took him to the vet and gave him medicine for seven days. I thought he would hate me, but after he just started sleeping in bed with me and spending most of the time by my side. In the end my neighbor just told me he had chosen me and she was getting another cat. So now he lives with me. I have two litter boxes, two water bowls and one fountain. I'm trying to give him a better environment and this channel really helps me.
Yesterday I adopted a wee girl , only a year old and this is her 3rd and FINAL home . The 1st home , their baby was too rough , 2nd - the woman was constantly "chasing" her and became a terrified wreck . I like to think that her new home has a more calming vibe where she is allowed to have that peace and quiet she wants and an understanding . I can already see her posture being more confident and now (due to the urgency of adopting her) it's time to Galaxyfy our home . I can't wait to build her highway ! Thank you for your advice Jackson x
Just wondering did you name her goldilocks? Isn't that the fairy tale of to soft, to hard, just love? (just right) congrats. My daughter and I got a place. I have always had dogs, currently have a 13yr yorkie. She has a 6 month old kitten. I've never had a cat. I was so worried that they wouldnt get along. They are doing very well, my dog is still trying to be a bit bossy over me, but the kitty is just so calm, never hurts her and I adore her. She almost a year old now and the family, all of us are great. Was so nice to hear your story and of your rescue. Blessings
Haha!!! You said "rewind" the video... As a guy who grew up in the 90s, I remember... "Be Kind, Please Rewind" on all the VHS rentals... Ah, good times! 📼📼📼
remember the creepy brrrr sound it would make when a movie finished, I remember leaning off my bunkbed ladder just to turn it off cause I was scared of the monsters getting my feet lmao
Best advice cat daddy has given, and I took: two cats is half the work as one. So true I adopted two brother kittens and everyday I'm so thankful I did! Plus it's twice the cuteness!!
Well lucky me. I have just adopted a beautiful Bengal kitten today and so far she is very playful and loves to be picked up on day 1. I live in 2 houses and move between them every week (1 house has another kitten named coffee, while the other house has 2 small dogs). My lovely bengal now named Ashley doesn't get along super well with the dogs but im sure that they will grow to be family soon, after all its still day 1. Ashley has a cat tree the size of me and loves it so far. Im a little worried about the long road trip between houses (30 min-1hour long) but im hopeful. Ashley is only a few weeks old and is already more energetic then my whole family combined and she ADORES anything that even remotely looks like a bird. So far in the first house we have stainless steel food amd water bowels, cat tree (with scratching post on it and a hammock and a small bed and mini house), 1 good toy, litter box (trying on getting more), and a cat carrier thats big enough for her bowels and her. Is there anything else i should be getting or doing for her to warm up to other pets? And is there anything we should be getting for her to enjoy car rides. When bringing home Ashley she cried the whole ride so i am hoping to find a good way to make car rides a treat. Ashley has already gotten pretty good at being around people and actively looks for attention and love.
@@carlinataylor93 she's 2 weeks old. Maybe more time with mama. How does a 2 week old climb a tree? Just wondering. 1st trip and she cried. She's probably so tiny you could have put her in your lap or next to your leg/hip area. Made her all warm and snuggly. I sure hope things went well.
Watching this made me realize just how un-picky my cat is, he'll eat anything, scratch on any pad I get him, he'll play with anything and he doesn't care at all about his litter box, he'll go in any box I get him scent or not, cover or not, liner or not. He's never scratched where he isn't supposed to from day one, nor has he ever gone outside the litter box, has never been violent or scratched ever. He's got a bin of toys, but his favourite is literally a ball I got from the dollar store and he just plays fetch all day with it. I didn't even know half this stuff existed until I watched this, he's so chill that I've never really had to worry about any of this lmao
I have had cats for yrs. My (15yrs) baby passed 6 mons. Been finding cat toys everywhere. I 'm begin to think one of us had/has a hoarding problem, due to the amount of cat toys I have found. But One can never have enough. Getting 2 kitties, not soon enough! May the purr be with U!
I was chosen lovingly by a beautiful brown tabby kitten at a rescue 2 weeks ago! It was on the 17th to be exact and your videos have helped me immensely. I’m a brand new cat daddy, as I mentioned, she picked me. Saw me, stretched her tiny pay through the bars and began these long adorable meows at me. I couldn’t resist and 2 hours later a trip to a pet store with a friend found me bringing home the most beautiful little soul. She is so sweet and loving and we’re so fortunate to have people like you who kindly show us how to be better parents. Thanks so much for all you give!
I'm picking up my first cat from the local shelter this Sunday, and I am so excited! She started out as a stray that was terrified of humans, to a point where the shelter would've put her down. But then my twin (who's a trainee there), got through to her _the day before they'd have her put down!_ And now she get's to be my first kitty.
Please don't forget to be patient with her. It will take some time for her to get used to the new environment! I'm sure You will find nice advices at Jackson's channel! 👌
I automatically adore this man and what he does i came across stuff about him on tumblr a million years ago and what he does is so important. Im so glad we are turning this generation to respect their pets. I'm not treating my pet as a kid specifically I'm treating it as a LIVING THING with a consciousness and FEELINGS
I'd also add a visit to the vet. I'm shocked at how many people adopt out or sell or give away sick kitties and puppies... the vet should be the stop you make on your way home from getting the cat.
@@toriless as someone that works in a shelter, I would still 100% recommend taking a shelter cat to the vet. The stress from the change to a house can give cats URI symptoms and a shelter won't test for things that a cat isn't showing symptoms of, but a vet might recommend a Felv test or a herpes test (especially if the cat has chronic URIs). Plus, it's always important to get established with a vet before you actually need the vet. The vet will be less help if they've never seen your cat before.
Take the cat/kitten to the vet _before_ you commit to the adoption. A sick kitty may be fine to adopt but if s/he needs more care than you can provide, you need to know that. Getting rejected because of an unknown physical problem just damages the cat emotionally and delays adoption by a real forever family
@Frostykatkit that's exactly what happened to mine. I adopted her from an independent place that rehomes abandoned cats, she had a vet visit before I got her, all her vaccinations were up to date then she died from FIP/feline corona virus not long after I got her. Nobody picked up that she had it until it was too late.
I would often find one on the hallway outside the bedroom when it was last in the living or family room. He was clearly leaving me a message. He could just never figure out how to get it into the bedroom or it probably would have been on the bed wit him. Oh yeah, he can open doors but only levered ones. I have had to change a few levers to round knobs.
We have a cat that plays fetch, though he'll bring the fishing pole and scream at you to throw it. Sometimes he'll play with the fishing pole when he brings it, but he mostly wants to throw it.
I just adopted two black 3 month old kittens. I’ve had them about a month now and I absolutely love it. They get along with my sisters dog and my senior cat pretty well 💀
You and kitten lady honestly saved my kittens life. She was super tiny and after the first day I noticed her acting very lethargic and cuddly (which was weird because she was not cool with my family yet). She also started sneezing. My initial want was to get a neonatal kitten but we got her instead. So I had already done a lot of research. I saw her getting worse and started asking my mom to take her to the vet. She said she would be fine but my gut told me to keep asking. So my sister and I did a bit of research and got worried because she wasn’t getting better at all. My sister and I started bother my mom until she caved and took the cat to the vet. She had a bad upper respiratory infection and had a bad reaction to the medications. Even before I got her I watched your channel to make sure to be as prepared as possible. And the video on warning signs gave me the push to advocate for my cat. Thank you 💛
I work for a veterinarian and I would really like to urge people to talk to their vet before switching to a grain free diet. It can have some negative effects on the heart if the grain is replaced with things like legumes. All the other tips are lovely! Thank you for being such a great voice for our wonderful feline friends ❤
I'm gonna get my first cat soon when me and my mom get a house! I'm super excited to get my first kitty!! Update: I GOT HIM!!! I got a Maine Coon mix named Oatmeal from my local rescue shelter!!
Please don't forget the microship in case he gets lost. This is very important for an outdoorcat! And a cat insurrance, this is not expensive every month, but it can get very expensive if he has an accident or gets sick.
We live on a boat (37 feet, not huge, but not teeny either) and the VERY FIRST thing I noticed was the big giant, wide shelf type area right under the inside widows inside the cabin/living area. It would be comparable to the dashboard in your car. And I immediately knew just how much my 3 kitties were going to LOVE sleeping up there in the sunlight, and they do! I put a cat bed up there and also a small, folded blanket, but of course they often prefer to lie on top of our large map book and navigation charts, which we also store up there. But they really, REALLY dig it! It’s almost as if a cat himself, designed that particular area for his own enjoyment! 🥰
ain't no shame in that. Reduce, re-use, recycle! Just make sure to completely de-odorize and clean. You never know what might be living on that tree, and the scent of a foreign cat on it might make your cat family a little nutty!
You can recover them to, to re-do the sisal, if you live in the UK, Screwfix do sisal rope, which works ell, and the carpet runners from Wilko work well, for the bases, I've recovered alot of bases, for my own and my local rehoming centre, I used spray carpet adhesive, stick it over the base, and trim about 2inch larger fold over and then use small tacks (shorted then the thickness of the base) you can even screw little rubber feet, on the bas. For the sisal, I strip off the old, do this straight over a binbag, and I use double sided carpet tape laid lengthwise along the tube. and wear gloves, and lay the sisal on, I tie a knot in the end, and screw this into the tube. For cutting both the sisal and the carpet runner, I use the scissors I got from my St John first aid course, £1 as they are really tough and can get a good neat edge on the corner of the base. If the plush platforms look a bit rough you can either recover with fur fabric, or steam and hoover, and if necessary make a blanket to cover it. enjoy x
@@carolineowen7846 Wow, what great info! I enjoy making stuff for my boy and just bought a roll of green sisal and have been thinking of safe ways to attach it. It all started because he loves cardboard boxes more than store bought stuff so I started strengthening and adapting them for him. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the great tips. We pick up our new black male kitten, Jett tomorrow and can't wait!!! I lost my beautiful girl Tortie last October and wasn't sure about another one....He just came into out lives at the right time and he will be one well looked after loved kitty 😍❤❤❤
Hi Jackson and fellow cat lovers, I have 13 cats and they are all desexed, microchipped, Vaccinated and indoor only. I adopted 7 from the RSPCA shelter, of different ages and the rest were give to good home, I love all of them, they are my reason for getting up every day. They saved me! They are not pets or just animals, to me they are my children. There is no difference for me that they aren't human babies. They are the most beautiful creatures and I feel blessed to share my life with them. They get the best of everything. I am not a hoader or crazy, I keep a very clean and fun environment for us all. They are my life. They have heaps of space to play in and a kitty gym. Water fountains, you name it. Cheers from Australia.
RAW FOOD! Not only is it the best for your cat (as long as it is actually formulated for cats) it also has awesome benefits like smaller, nearly-stinkless poop and a shinier, softer coat.
Getting our rescue cat in 4 days!! Perfect timing 😉 can't wait for her to start the rest of her life with us ❤️ CAN'T WAIT TO SHOWER HER WITH LOVE!! (yes I know that she will need time to acclimate. I'll be there for her when she is ready ☺️)
Really appreciate this well put together resource. I always thought I was a dog person, but recently had several encounters with cats that made me start thinking about adopting a cat. This was super useful.
Thank you for all your kitty based knowledge! My husband and I were found and chosen by two adorable teeny tiny kittens in our mobile community. They ran out from under a car in a driveway up to us on our nightly walk. We asked the people there and multiple other homes, no one claimed them. They are such sweet babies, they already knew how to use a litter box, and they are very clean and lovey. We think someone dumped them here who couldn’t find homes for the last two in a litter. We never thought we would have pets, but these little girls are our precious babies now, and you are going to be our kitty yoda! I’m going to go check out the kitten info now. I always thought dry food was supposed to be the best thing for them. So much for me to learn. Who rescued who indeed.
It is horrible! I wish I had known 30 years ago when I had it done to one cat. I know so much more about cats now but a lot of it was from what he taught me.
@Robin Siwula do you know what declawing is? You're literally removing each and every claw under anaesthetic. This means a partial removal of the cat’s bones that the claws are attached to. Imagine you decide to cut off the first knuckle on every finger. That's what it basically is. If you cant handle a cat using their claws or if you dont want to put in the effort to redirect your cats clawing habits then dont get a cat
@@justjello7599 honestly, people that are so obnoxious and ignorant to understand that they are actually damaging their cats. I dont even have a cat and I know you DO NOT EVER declaw
I was never allowed to have a pet growing up. I finally decided to adopt my sweet Teddy and he set me on the course for decreased anxiety and a happy health life. I’m so thankful for your channel for a new cat owner like myself who wants to give me sweet boy the best ❤❤❤
I started brushing my kitten w a firm toothbrush his feet between his toes he is 11 weeks trims all ten nails like a pro. He gets his favorite food after every lesson though. We're harness training with just a figure 8 to show him he plays in it and gets treats too. New cat mom at 53 🐈🤗💜 We rescued each other, he just kind of takes everything good. Im a 12 yo, and in about a few weeks i got a cat as a gift! And having a cat has been my dream since 7 yo, and the cat i got is such a cutie and such a good kitty, and what i love the most is that I saved her from her old house, the house she was in had another cat which always was jealous of her because she’s the younger one and she’ll always get attacked so im super happy and yeah! 🥺
theres a cat at my sisters house that is extremely wary of people. but since ive been using the techniques in your videos shes been growing closer and slowly forming sense of a trust for me
Ichabod came from a friend of mine who had said he had all his shots and dewormer - but he was very thin and lethargic, which I had never seen in a kitten even in the ones that I just played with with friends of mine. I had made him an appointment with the vet for a check-up anyway but ended up moving it to the same day I got him. I'm glad I did, because it turned out that he hadn't been dewormed at all, and was in fact filled with parasites to the point where he wasn't getting nutrition. We got him on meds and turned him around, thankfully, but! Even if you get a kitten from a friend, always book a visit for a vet as soon as possible. It's a great start to the adoption process to just make sure you get off on the right foot with your new friend, and to make sure you establish a relationship with their vet. And you never know what might have been missed otherwise.
We just rescued a cat today. She was living under my grandpa's car. He the sweetest thing. She's so affectionate and thoughtful and smart. She's the perfect kitty
Three years a cat mommy. Watching and making a mental check list. Breathing a sigh of relief every time Jackson mentions something and I can check the box. “✅ Got it!”
I saved some money and thought, I'll do my cat something really really good and bought a cat tree worth 300€. He is 4 years now. Damn, how the time ran! Those scratching poles are really really thick. It has a very cool sleeping spot above everything where he can observe everything in the room perfectly and feel like on top of the world and a basket where he can hop in and chill, which he really does. Took him a few days to actually try those things out, but once he started to do that, I was sooooooo happy. There is no better feeling than you observing your cat accepting the things you give them and actually use them! My mom also got me a new water fountain for him. I wanted to get a new one, but I didn't even ask my mom, somehow she just knew. I swear, this was one of the best gifts ever and it wasn't even for me, but yet I felt so much joy. Oh Jackson, I tried to trim his claws, really. I can touch his paw and everything, but him and me just don't like forcing all this. I came to the point of acceptance. It's ok. He used to scratch me a lot when we were playing. Of course, not on purpose, but nowadays he learned, it hurts me and therefore he doesn't use them really on me and when it comes to playing time, as you said, I don't use my hands or something. Toys with sticks and whatever, no sweat, no problems. If he scratches me by accident, which can happen every now and then, I can't get too mad at it, as he starts running off and tell me that way, he didn't do it on purpose. Aside oof that, it seems like my cat is doing just fine. Letting me sleep, go to bed with me actually, only start to do cat things when he notices that I wake up, cuddling, eating wet und sometimes dry food (more like a snack, the main meals are wet food twice a day at the same time) and yea. Thanks for reading. Superb video.
Use treat after, I do it once a month and they get one treat per front claw. It creates a great association. You know, a bunch of YES and JG would call them. Since it is only once a month and they only thing they get treats for even this generous amount is not too much.
Omg wish I had seen this a year and a half ago! Thank you for being so detailed and thorough and actually caring about cats. I’m so sick of hearing ‘it’s a cat can’t you just leave it food and water for a week? They like to be alone’ ughh
Found him at my front door every morning, found out he was sleeping under my garden hut.. It's more like he adopted me!! He's now the family favourite!!
On point #3: I ask humans *just how many times* would they like to use the toilet before it gets flushed? Yeah, I thought so! Lost my two elderly cats a few years ago, at ages 19 and 20, and just rescued a *second pair* of kittens this year, which makes FOUR kittens total. I'm in Kitten Heaven, and am *very* glad to have found your UA-cam channel, as I'm a fan of yours from watching "My Cat From Hell" on Animal Planet several years ago. Thanks so much for sharing what you know, Jackson. The kitties and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
@@monb7796 The first natural diet I fed my kitties involved grain, but after obtaining a second rescue cat I eventually figured out that they haven’t evolved to eat grain. (Neither has our species, but that’s another subject!) Jackson extols the virtues of adopting adult cats (which both of mine were when we found each other) and of feeding a raw meat diet. I use TCfeline premix with ground beef from a local producer and Evanger’s canned Rabbit or Quail for “fast food” and variety. Now I’m experiencing the joy of raising kittens and currently they’re getting a catio, as my significant other realized it wasn’t difficult to convert his front porch that in past years accommodated chihuahuas. Yay! Truly in Kitty Heaven here!
A year ago I adopted my sweet Margeaux & I wish I had seen this video back when I did! She’s not fond of getting her nails clipped & she’s never used any scratchers or cat trees I buy her (probably because she posts up in the window ledges already & has decided the carpet is all she needs). But I did watch so many of your other videos when I got started with her - thank you for your work! Margeaux is my first pet & the journey with her so far has been beyond rewarding. I love that cat beyond words 💕
My two rescues love their 3 way tunnel. At one end there is a hanging toy, but they just seem to love that tunnel, playing together in the tunnel, making the crunchy sound the tunnel makes. I would recommend a tunnel to anyone.
My cats love a tunnel too. They don’t like the kind that makes the crunchy sounds and that’s the kind that I see everywhere. I ordered one of Jackson’s tunnels and they spend hours in it
Thank you for making this video. First, let me say I’ve never liked cats. I didn’t dislike them, I just never cared for them. Well, this last week someone dumped a male cat behind my house. The little critter stole my heart. He does things I had no idea why he did it like stirring on me “making biscuits” and rubbing his head abs face all over my chest. I’m learning a good deal from your videos.
Top Litterbox tip! You can get $5 litterboxes at Lowe's/Home Depot. Look for mixing cement tubs, they are HUGE and double as a cat litterbox. There's no covers, but I use a litter made of bamboo and charcoal, so I honestly don't smell anything.

My wife and I are trying to get our first cat, so just wanted to thank you for all the tips (and all of your other videos which I've been watching religiously)
Thank you! I'm really thinking about adopting a cat, but I grew up with dogs and don't know much about cats, so my first step is making a bit of research and I came across your channel. This video is so good, short, clear, I'm less scared of doing something wrong, because now I feel like I know the basics.
Thank you Jesus! I need this! I love cats and want one, but would’ve forgotten basic stuff beyond giving them a bowl and a litter box. Thank you for this video!
Omg... I saved a kitten about 13 weeks age from side of road, he is my soul mate, wicked but so incredibly sweet! Have two older cats who I love but he has become my heart
What a nice point when he said Food and any other supplies they don’t like can always be donated back to a shelter so you can replace it with a kind they do like
I rescued one yesterday. A rainy day. At KFC restaurant in Nairobi Kenya. She is also injured on her back left leg. Looking forward to sharing our growth stories together 😊.
I feel like treats are something that was missed, you mentioned it once, but in training (potty training, getting them to come to you, etc.) and in getting them comfortable, finding the high value treats is gonna be something you'll want to experiment with from the beginning.
Great timing for this video, after a 10 year dry spell my partner finally agreed to adopting a pair of cats after we move and I am SO DARN EXCITED!! I have always had cats or dogs so these last 10 years without pets have been very hard. To prep for the move I had to erase the last two traces of my beloved Maggie: the holes in the window sill from her favorite window perch and the spot she wore on the wall corner where she would rub her little face while she was “supervising bathroom activities.” I almost teared up when I did the patching and painting, but she had a long and happy life. I miss her so much and I can’t wait for the next cast of characters once we get settled.
Picking up my first, cat(adoption), this afternoon. I'm so grateful 🙏🏽 and excited. A little nervous, yet i have Confidence as well as Faith, that We'll be just fine.😇😊
Thanks so much for these tips I am adopting a cat today. Actually she chose me, I found her on my patio last week. I let her in after contemplating for 30 min. immediately. Yes I fell in love with my fur baby. But due to the law where I live , I have to take her to Animal Services. I knew in my heart I wanted to adopt her. She needed me but for real I need her. Thanking God for blessing me with this angel.
I free feed my cat grain free kibble and schedule feed grain free wet chicken based once a day. She was eating cheap kibble when I got her and you could tell. Her fur is so much softer and healthier now. Grain free all the way! Edit to add my cat took her string toy out of the cabinet and tore it apart when we were gone. I childproofed the cabinets after that. I never thought she could get in
Family just adopted a young cat who was used for her kittens. She’s still getting adjusted. She has such a sweet personality for a cat that’s been cross states, foster home, and shelter ❤️
The kitten lady was my first go-to when I found 3 kittens under a wheelbarrow in my backyard. You were my second source of information. My little boys are almost 4 months old now and have been a real pleasure. Thanks to both of you ❤️👍👵
One of the best days in my life was when I found Saber when I was 14 poor baby was outside in a bad snow storm crying and was covered in snow to the point he could barely move. I just remember hearing his faint cries looking out the barn window and just running out and scooping him up in a towel. I put him in front of the wood stove on a blanket I warmed up in the dryer after I got as much snow off and as dry as I could and fell asleep on the couch next to him. I was woken up because he crawled under the blanket with me and curled up on my chest purring. He was my first cat that was truly mine and I loved him more than anything at the time. I ended up finding his owner after a while who kept letting him out in horrible weather but he always came back to me. Sadly he was about 17 years old and passed away after a few months of knowing him but he was the sweetest cat I ever met.
I am getting ready to adopt a cat after years of wanting one and I have been watching many of your videos. I am so glad I found your channel because you make it easy to understand what cats want and what they need. So thank you I feel more educated with each video 😊
my cat Rayne is 1 and a half and I bought a cover bed for him he never touched it then last week I decided to take out the mat, now he lays on it all day! I use the cover part to put all his toys, picky cat!! love these videos
so it's not just me! I have also noticed that things, where such a mat is in, my cat doesn't use. So I decided to replace one of the mats with a pillow he really loves to be on and ta daaaa, he chilling there. The other mat I also took out and replaced it with a soft towel and ta daaaaa, chilling in there. It can be so simpel, right? Too simpel to notice sometimes
My sweet girl that I adopted less than a month ago said she was almost euthanized in her medical records because she was very underweight from worms but I'm so glad my cuddle buddy started to gain weight because she really did save me.
My cat, George, has a toy box. I rotate the toys but I have to keep one or two in his toy basket. He yells at me if he hasn’t got toys to bring me. I wake up with a toy and George laying next to me EVERY morning so we can play. He’s allowed out twice a day but won’t go out if I’m not the one that motions it’s ok. I call or whistle and he runs home. He knows several motions to sit, stay, come, up and several more. And people say cats can’t be trained! (I also really do love dogs too.) I love watching your show and how you help people understand how to make their fur buddies happy and how they can truly enjoy how special cats are! Great job!
I myself like the dry food, but I also mix in wet food throughout her day. In the morning and given I won't be home, she get a bowl of dry food, which help her ''brush'' her teeth and make it so she eats it slower and when I get home, she get a wet meal and before bed, she get treats after 30 min-1h of playtime and so far, she seem very happy of that routine ritual, plus given my income, its really hard on me to continuously buy wet food I just wish I could get more cat trees and install cat shelves, I like in an appartment so I can't drill anything and on top my window's borders are in a 45 degree slope, which is super lame for the cat, I tried to remedy this by putting my couch by the window so she can use the top and lay there instead I just wish cat stuff wasn't so expensive, being low income is rough, but she was a kitten I rescued from the winter cold, so I'm trying to put as much effort to make the apartment as cat friendly as I can
Hey, It sounds like your an amazing cat parent. I will suggest a floor to ceiling cat tree, they don't take up much space because they go straight up like an actual tree, but also they have a spring pressure thing on top, so they get wedged in a way against the ceiling..so they won't fall over and they don't need drilling. I'm sorry that i didn't explain it but I don't know how to explain it. Xx goodluck
just got a kitten and im fully devoted to her !! thank u for this!! ready to explore my babies preferences *_* she’s currently so happy with everything i’ve done!! even down to bathing in the tub, shes mildly okay w baths. a little clawing but with some pets and a treat shes relax. ugh. love her to death. baths are the hardest so far. but clipping nails, and cleaning her eye gunk easy so far easy!
Life saver video!!! I had this little stray kitten that showed up at my back porch 1 night ago and heard it meowing. I went out to look to see what was going on and he saw me and come running up to me. I picked him up cause he was trying to run in to my screened porch too me. Once I picked him up I saw his little eye all bulging out and started crying that was it I took him inside set him up in a dog creat I had from out doggie baby that passed away after 20 years last summer. Got up the next morning getting on the phone with the vet to get him seen as soon as possible the vet had me in within an hour. Took little man in and found out he has a sever eye infection and he will more than likely will lose that eye. He has ringworm and an intestinal infection as well. I wasn't going to keep him at first cause I don't know anything about cat's never had one and wasn't planning on getting another pet, but since ive had him he wants to be around me all the time follows me, rubs his little head on me and wants to sleep on me. Little thing has grown on me quickly. The vet says hes about 8 weeks old. I've never had a cat (only dogs) so I have been watching as many videos as I can find on what a cat dose and what it needs and then this video piped up in my feed! So happy it did cause this will help me while he's in treatment here at my house his next appointment is Monday to find out about his little eye. I have been feeling nervous cause I know I don't know anything about cat's. So happy this channel is here!

I’m about to adopt a cat with my girlfriend tomorrow, we’ve been talking about it for a while but she’s never had a cat and I haven’t had one since a child.

Your mum was right. I’m also good friends with my cat. Have u ever looked into islam, it has a nice ending once we die ♥️
I agree. My cat is my companion. He's only 7 months old. He keeps me entertained
Oh bless your heart ❤️ most people would not take their cats ashes with them, I quite like this concept
this is so cute i teared up on that last sentence :( you are such a good cat owner even though you're a stranger i just know you're a really good person please continue to live healthy and life to the fullest!

Once they realize you are their human and this is their home and THEIR toys, they will start to come out of their shell more.
that reminds me, I thought my cats had lost interest in one of their toys, turns out they were playing with it at night.
Thank you for being such a saint in saving that kitty!! I'd have done the same
This is a great list.
Bless your heart!!

Plus, its the best part of my day every single day!
brush and then treats?
how did you make them learn that this is bedtime?

Smh.

Omg how sweet I hope this is going well for you
My late cat was a vertical scratcher, he had the door of our shed torn to bits so I nailed a fresh row of wooden planks to it every month or so and he'd get super excited every time fresh wood went on!
Sorry for questioning, but why did you need to "import" the adopted cat?
While I understand that humans eat meat, I don't understand the inhumane treatment and torture.

im a child, not overly experienced- but i have volunteered at shelters, and have several cats!
and what i found out is some cats (not all. some dont care) like their food dishes a bit more shallow, so their whiskers dont bend when they try and eat.
That is very helpful actually. I've only ever had a handful of cats in my life and adopting one soon so this could be top importance for all I know.
Bells might be intended for outdoor cats. The sound of a cat bell warns potential prey, spoiling the hunt.
A few more tips:
- get a more “plate-shaped” food bowl for your cats to avoid whisker fatigue.
- for small kittens keep the toilet lids closed and make sure to plug up holes they can disappear into (dishwashers, pipes, drains etc.)
- give them a place to hide (cat box/bed/carrier and never force them out of that space or put ur hands in.
I'm trying to give him a better environment and this channel really helps me.
thank you for promoting adopting a cat :) all that choose rescued street souls are really saving lives
Blessings
Poor baby why was the woman chasing her?!?

How's she doing now??

how is the kitty doing
I automatically adore this man and what he does i came across stuff about him on tumblr a million years ago and what he does is so important. Im so glad we are turning this generation to respect their pets. I'm not treating my pet as a kid specifically I'm treating it as a LIVING THING with a consciousness and FEELINGS
I adopted my boy last year. He has defo saved me as much as I him! He helped me through quarantine and gives me a reason to keep going each day ☺️
I'd also add a visit to the vet. I'm shocked at how many people adopt out or sell or give away sick kitties and puppies... the vet should be the stop you make on your way home from getting the cat.
Another reason to use a shelter. One of the first things a decent shelter does is examine all incoming animals.
Agreed! Always take your cat to the vet asap!
My cat will bring me his "fishing pole" toy to me, drop it at my feet and yell at me to play with him
I would often find one on the hallway outside the bedroom when it was last in the living or family room.
That's beautiful

Thanks for all the great advice and for always sharing it with love.
Thank you 💛
The most important thing a cat needs is Love and respect from their human

I’m a SUPER experienced cat Mammy. I still watched, and I approve this message!!! 😻
My kitten almost a cat is like my own daughter, I treat animal like part of the family.
Ummm my neighbor was throwing their cat trees out so I ... stole them
ain't no shame in that.

Yes!! The number of times we’ve been to a vet that basically assumes cats are just small dogs is ridiculous. Especially nutrition-wise.
RAW FOOD! Not only is it the best for your cat (as long as it is actually formulated for cats) it also has awesome benefits like smaller, nearly-stinkless poop and a shinier, softer coat.

I have had cats for almost all my life, but you never stop learning

It is horrible! I wish I had known 30 years ago when I had it done to one cat. I know so much more about cats now but a lot of it was from what he taught me.
Agreed. I refuse to declaw my cats!!
@Robin Siwula did YOU take him to the vet to be declawed?

Kitten Mama and Cat Daddy!

Your cats lived a long life for a cat. Please share what brand of food did they eat?
We just got a tunnel exactly like you're describing. My boys love it and like to flip it over on each other, too 🤣
Yes! My cats love it too. They broke the dangling toy but, love running through the tunnels.
My cats love a tunnel too. They don’t like the kind that makes the crunchy sounds and that’s the kind that I see everywhere. I ordered one of Jackson’s tunnels and they spend hours in it
I had to find a special tunnel on amazon to fit my 18 lb cat, sorry Jackson your tunnel was just not wide enough.

I love talking cat all day everyday..they surprise me, teach me and I love learning about them every minute of everyday

I never thought she could get in
Thank you Jackson!! My girls' mojo is my priority!! Love to see them happy and safe.
Great job!
an 8 ish week old kitten climbed into my work truck yestsrday. This is my first cat ever. She's mine now!
I myself like the dry food, but I also mix in wet food throughout her day. In the morning and given I won't be home, she get a bowl of dry food, which help her ''brush'' her teeth and make it so she eats it slower and when I get home, she get a wet meal and before bed, she get treats after 30 min-1h of playtime and so far, she seem very happy of that routine ritual, plus given my income, its really hard on me to continuously buy wet food
I just wish I could get more cat trees and install cat shelves, I like in an appartment so I can't drill anything and on top my window's borders are in a 45 degree slope, which is super lame for the cat, I tried to remedy this by putting my couch by the window so she can use the top and lay there instead
I just wish cat stuff wasn't so expensive, being low income is rough, but she was a kitten I rescued from the winter cold, so I'm trying to put as much effort to make the apartment as cat friendly as I can
Im sure your cat friend appreciates the home and the food.
Xx goodluck

I got a cat tree from Amazon for about $60; it’s not very tall but it’s sturdy and it includes two scratching posts!
@@phiacraft338 we might of got the same! aha
just got a kitten and im fully devoted to her !! thank u for this!! ready to explore my babies preferences *_* she’s currently so happy with everything i’ve done!! even down to bathing in the tub, shes mildly okay w baths. a little clawing but with some pets and a treat shes relax. ugh. love her to death. baths are the hardest so far. but clipping nails, and cleaning her eye gunk easy so far easy!
How kind of you.
On Community Cats channel, she has lots of medical rescues and the comments have lots of info
Bless you for saving his life!
@@meadowlarkb.427 He's a year old now. He did lose that eye but it didn't slow him down one bit😃 he loves to lounge on the dryer and his cat wand lol.🐱🐈
I’m about to adopt a cat with my girlfriend tomorrow, we’ve been talking about it for a while but she’s never had a cat and I haven’t had one since a child. Although I am good with all animals and most of the things you state I already know, but a refresher is so nice and the information is so well relayed! And the stuff I don’t know, I appreciate you for teaching me! This is going to be a fun journey for the both of us ❤️
God bless you my brother
