    Holy smokes. Anyone involved with dog behaviour or training or welfare should know NOT to introduce unfamiliar dogs this way, especially greyhounds with non-greyhounds. Staff at a rescue/shelter should know proper procedures, and use them always. Best wishes though.

    I don't understand why you were more concerned with the greyhounds interacting with your aunt's dog and not you guys?

      Criteria for dog "shopping" for their new family member; Color? She's not a sweater. Age; A grey can share many loving years with them at eight or or develop an osteosarcoma and die in four heart breaking weeks. That dog interaction test with another dog that doesn't even live with them? The aunt should just let them keep her dog for the two weeks it will take for them to resent that dog and take her back to the aunt. The adoption group should make their usual home visit and see the apartment with a bed, bowls and toys. She'll most likely chew the couch and unstuff some pillows while left alone as she won't know the difference. It will her busy and happy while they are at work. Finally, the "pee in the house" issue he wanted no part of? Guess what. I'm happy to have had eight greys in my life. The groups each matched my dog to me. We've all had a great time together.

      @@cynthiahiigelcls9930 I can see adopting by color, up to a point. The hubby and I made the decision to adopt only black coated (and older) cats because they are the least to get adopted, everyone seems to want kittens.

      Thank you... I stopped the video when I saw all the heartbreaking comments about them picking the prettiest dog not the one who chose them.
      I'm going to foster adopt mine I'm thinking 2 at once so they get to "grow" together.
      I read if I foster they grow with how I do things and who lives here my 2 kids now big enough to have almost any size dog.
      We will have 3 budgies too so they will learn to respect their space at the same time.
      Couldn't think of a better fit for my family they sleep up to 18 hours a day need very limited walking and so well mannered off the bat.

    One, why bring you AUNTS dog/pet to the adoption. Two, if you had a cat and/or dog then bring your own. Greyhounds are very accepting, if you did proper research then you would know that. Three, besides your boyfriend doesn’t want one anyway, you can tell by his face.
    My first dog was a Greyhound, and this “shelter” is not providing proper nutrition to them. Yes, Greyhounds are skinny and bony, but not this bad. You can tell by the spine and hips.
    I have fostered many dogs over the years with reputable organizations but this...
    This video is horrible in too many ways

    This constant parading of dogs in and bringing back the top contenders is like a beauty contest or selecting the best dress. I have never seen greyhound rescues allowing this method of choosing a dog. Usually a potential adopter is allowed to bring a dog home with them on a trial period to see how well the particular dog adjusts to your home and routine, training , etc. and you either decide that that the dog is a good fit with your home and lifestyle or you bring the dog back. I think that a potential adopter is allowed to trial a total of 2 dogs in a rescue.
    Any greyhound rescue/adoption should be vetting you and ascertaining if you really have the commitment it takes to care for a dog for the rest of her or his life and if you know what is involed.

      Im in california, i have never heard of trial runs. Once the dog has been selected and home checks are done, the rescue will take the to them, dog and spend an hour or so helping the transition but after that its a done deal. I dont think one rescue i know allows trials for days.....now that youve said i feel the need to ask them. (I transport for rescuers, im unable to foster and place, im a foster failure, 3 dogs 4 cats 5 of those are rescues , i worry to much and become attatched. Driving them is the only thing i can do.)

      I’m kinda disappointed that this video gave you insight. Don’t get me wrong I personally love your videos and I think they’re really informative but the video above is an example of how to not adopt a greyhound. I’m saddened by this video and the way they handled the adoption process. Adopting a greyhound should be focused on the connection between those who live with the greyhound and not your aunt’s dog that you visit every once in a while. I just don’t understand how this video provided any valuable insight into the greyhound adoption process.

    @PhyllisGlassup2TheBrim 8 років тому +125

    I hope that you still have the dog because you seem totally unaware of how dogs behave. You discarded dogs because they were "too rambunctious". They were simply excited at being out of the kennel. You panic and ask "what was that" when Kelsey initiated play and demonstrated that she was the boss.
    I have owned many 'long dogs' (old gypsy word for Greyhounds and Lurchers,) over the years and love them.

    • @bitchhp2973
      @bitchhp2973 7 років тому +2

      They did not want a rambunctious dog, and you do not know the other dog. the way she shows dominance might be by biting and showing aggression. A rescue center will not give you a dog if there is aggression.

      the lack of punctuation in your post makes it really hard to understand what you are saying.
      One doesn't *have* to know a certain dog. Dog behaviour is dog behaviour no matter what the breed. Dogs do not demonstrate dominance by biting and aggression. Violence is always a *last* resort with animals, after body language such as shown in the video,

    When adopting a dog the most important thing is that only the people and animals you LIVE with not your aunts random dog that has a neurotic energy, (over excitement is not something you should praise) should come with you to meet the dog. You definitely want to nurture calm balanced energy . I think you guys really need to focus on you guys and the dog.

    This is heart-breaking to watch these beautiful greyhounds being brought out and paraded in front of you both only to be sent back through the back again. It's like you're shopping for a new couch, not a pet dog.
    And what was the point in bringing your aunt's dog? It's not like the dogs are going to live together.
    Sorry but you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Why you thought you'd make a video of this and share it with the world is beyond me.
    Just horrible.

    • @ReallyBrandi
      @ReallyBrandi 5 років тому +12

      Actually they did exactly right. They brought the dog because they need their dog to get along with aunts dog, meaning theyll be seeing eachother a lot. Thats what is suppose to happen, when adopting you arent suppose to pick willy nilly thats how good dogs get labeled as bad. Looking for a match to ensure the dog and the family are going to be successful together. Many dogs get returned because people dont take the time to do this. Please educate yourself on adoption, these dogs werent being paraded they were being tested, as it should be.

      Because greyhounds tend to jump around a lot when they're excited, which is probably at least as stressful for the other dog in this situation and is no doubt an insurance consideration for the rescue centre, hence the muzzle too.

      Greyhounds are in fact jumpy around other dogs, especially ones who've only know the race track their whole life. This is for safety reasons for both the greyhound and others as well. The tension wasn't from those holding the leash it was from the greyhounds thrusting at the other dog.

    I'm a dog and cat lover, the hubby is more of a cats-only person. In discussing potentially adopting a dog someday, he's more open to adopting an older dog because he thinks they may be calmer (health-costs aside). If it wasn't a match, at least we would have a relatively shorter time frame and we'd give the dog the best final years of their life possible instead of sitting out their days at a shelter.
    We also made the decision to adopt only black coated (and older) cats because they are the least to get adopted, everyone seems to want kittens.
    So far, we've adopted three older, black cats, all with health issues that no one else wanted. We were able to give the cats a nice few years at the end of their lives. We wouldn't change a thing - although difficult when it was time to go over the rainbow bridge, they gave more to us than we ever could have imagined. Our lives are better for it.
    It was disappointing to hear them comment on picking the 'prettiest' one.

    Honestly I don’t think this place was very professional because of the muzzles and the fact that the place wasn’t really puppy proofed because of the decorations and stuff on the desks. They also had to bring the dogs out side which makes me think that the the greys are being mistreated. Also, it doesn’t seem like they were really ready for a dog. They don’t look excited and they had to see all the dogs multiple times to know which one they liked. When I got my puppy I knew instantly that it was her that I was going to choose.

      I have lived with three Greyhounds, the first one choose me. The second was when taking my dog for a group walk organised monthly by the kennels. Someone had returned a dog because he barked too much. I ended up going home with two dogs.
      After many happy years I sadly lost both within a short while of each other. After a period of time I felt I was ready to have a other and asked at the kennels which one they had most trouble rehoming .
      It was an 18 month who had been retired because of a leg injury, and had been bought back three times for being aggressive to other dogs, pulling hard on her lead , and being to boisterous.
      Five years on and we are still together, she is a lot of work but I wouldn't have anything else.
      What I am trying to say is all dogs are individuals and all deserve their forever homes.

    I know this video is old, but holy crap, the amount of dog 'experts' in the comment section is completely insane. Dogs are not one size fits all, and the couple was choosing a dog based on what the qualities were, and they probably weren't ready for a higher energy dog, would you have rather they end up with a dog they didn't want and they put them back in the rescue. You're not paying for the dog, leave them alone.

    you seem like your getting a dog for all the wrong reasons.
    I have an 11 year old male exracer who puts up with me.
    we have lived together for 7 years, the only requirement I had when adopting was he or she would be ok with my cat.
    sex, colour, and everything else didn't matter. I trusted the adoption folk to use their knowledge to pair me with the ideal hound, and they did.
    he was 4 years old, raced a hundred races in 2 years. almost all black.
    when we got home, he just walked in and was happy.

    It’s sad that people decide against getting a dog because they’re “too rambunctious.” What you’re seeing is a dog that is highly stimulated and probably doesn’t get nearly enough exercise at all with those people. Energetic dogs are usually smarter as well, so they’re some of the best dogs, but no one wants them.

    Good job, you two. I hope that Diamond (still her name?) worked out for you. I would love to think she did. I personally have 3 ex-racing greys and often foster (on top of) when I can. Every hound adopted (even a humble lurcher) is a hound given a chance at the life they deserve and probably would never otherwise have. In fact, it often means a hound saved from euthanasia. You have saved a life. You couldn't take them all. You picked the one you thought was right. I salute you! To everyone who doesn't have one of their own, there are endless more still waiting for a forever home. You will know when you are ready - and they are waiting for that magical moment. Best wishes

    I've always had greyhounds I've never lived without them they're my whole life my parents adopted Prince and Cassie when I was four Cassie sadly passed away first and then Prince did 2 years later half a year later we adopted my greyhound Jill who was found in Ireland she is now ten years old and we adopted her when she was just 6 months she's now on her last legs she is the best dog 2 weeks ago we adopted a 12 wk old greyhound who they couldn't race because they didn't know who the father was lucky for her. Her brothers and sisters were took to hunting and she was the only one they could save. So don't buy dogs of the internet they're are perfectly good dogs in adoption shelters and rescues centres that are probably alot more loving and haven't had a great start in life and want the rest of they're life to just be loved and want to love u some people think greyhounds need alot of excersize but actually they're the easiest dogs they can have a 20 mins run and their flat out on the sofa all day then so don't buy dogs adopt them😘😘

    Overall a really nice video. I like the area that is used for meet and greets. Interactions are usually rather stressful- they dogs aren't sure what's going on and everything is new. The humping is usually indicative of over-stimulation; it's not always a sign of '"dominance". The hounds are often rambunctious at first meeting- they're excited. The dog you meet and potentially choose often changes once they settle in to their new home. I adopted a very obnoxious youngster (he had just turned 2) who turned into the laziest hound I've ever had! However, he's extremely smart and a trouble maker so I have to watch him lol. He's content to potty outside and come right back in to continue napping! I adopted an 8 year old and he had more energy than my younger hounds! He always wanted to play and loved his walks. You never know what personality you'll get once they become your dog : ) Oh, and by the way, boys marking is not their fault. It's ours for not keeping them on lead in the house and watching them carefully. I know some females who mark worse than all the boys!!

    Why the muzzles? I read online these dogs are not aggressive. They wear them to prevent injury during races.
    What the heck? Why would you make these dogs look dangerous?

    • @riotofthewolves6848
      @riotofthewolves6848 7 років тому +18

      Greyhounds are muzzled by adoption agencies when being introduced to other pets as they tend to have high prey drive and they're trying to prevent injuries. It's generally not necessary when introducing to large dogs though, as greys are genetically designed to view small animals as prey and grow up surrounded by dogs their size. But yes, muzzles are a very good idea when introducing to smaller pets. Many greys will chase and kill small pets, including cats and dogs. They ARE hunting dogs, not just racing dogs.

    • @JessBeautyJunkie
      @JessBeautyJunkie 7 років тому +1

      Sighthounds tend to have high prey drives, which is not the same as aggression. I have an Italian Greyhound, and she's the least aggressive dog you'll ever meet. She's a total lovebug, BUT she tries to chase down and kill (and has succeeded - she gets up to 35mph, fast for a 13lb dog) every small animal she sees in our yard. That's just a sighthound's instinct. Although there were no smaller dogs in this video, so I don't know the reasoning there.

    • @phyllisnunn2061
      @phyllisnunn2061 6 років тому

      The muzzles are because the track Greyhounds grow up isolated from other breeds. As someone mentioned, they are a hunting dog, and is *possible* they could see another breed of dog as a prey animal when meeting for the first time. On top of this, they are very, VERY fast, not just when running but when excited and moving around. So these greyhound volunteers are just being extra cautious and keeping Kelsey safe by using muzzles. If this couple had NOT brought the Portuguese Water Dog, (and I do not think I would have, but - it did work out well from the looks of things), then they could have met the Greyhounds without muzzles immediately.
