The larger one which was mixed with wolfhound to improve muscles (stupid because that slows down any athlet) 😊 was extremely scared if thunder and we had to close the windows on every 4th of July being close to a park where they were blasting fire works. Me and my wife adopted an ex-racing greyhound yeas ago and Ruby was a great dog. She got along great with other dogs. We lived on a small farm and Ruby killed several wild rabbits. My wife then got our daughter a pet rabbit and one day we forgot about having the dogs in the house and had the rabbit out in the kitchen and weren't paying attention to it. Next thing we know the rabbit was gone and I started looking for her. when I looked in the living room, Sonny the rabbit was lying up under Ruby the greyhounds chin and both were sound asleep in the floor. After that we would bring our Scottish terrier in the house and put Sonny in the dog lot with Ruby for exercise. Ruby would chase her till Sonny got tired and then Sonny would just sit down and Ruby would lay down and lick her on the head and bark at her wanting her to play some more. Ruby accepted Sonney as a family member and never offered to hurt her, they were best friends.

Thank you for this video. I really appreciate it. I've been thinking about getting a greyhound for a while. I work from home and go out exercising (running & hiking etc) for an hour or two per day, so this looks like a good fit 🙂

1hour exercise is true for younger greys but once they're past 5 years old, honestly they won't mind smaller walk time. Mine is 8 years old and asks to go back to the car after 20 min.
Prey drive is the reason I wouldn't just point blank recommend them to elderly owners. My boy's prey drive was so extreme for the first 12 months I had him, he'd go ballistic on seeing a cat, squirrel or small dog. He'd lunge into the road even when cars were coming, spin, try to escape his harness etc and it was extremely hard to control. 2yrs on with training and a strong bond, he's much more relaxed but will still lunge on occasion. Its so important to be aware of breed characteristics, and a hound's level of drive, before taking them home!
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment and share your experience with prey drive. This is all good information for new adopters to get a variety of owners takes.
My sweat Greyhound is almost nothing like you describe, Yes loves a morning walk of lead, He lives at work with me and greats every customer as his new best friend, he was well trained by my cat and they now tolerate each other but with a fast claw if my cat is grumpy, he wants to make friends with small dogs and cats. his food bowl is full all the time and it's only treats that disappear instantly, loves to eat leftovers, never over eats still just as skinny as I got him, he loves cuddles and to be lazy all day. I do find his feet are soft and commonly get cut, also his skin is thin and commonly gets scratches on bush walks
Loved our beautiful greyhounds Grace and Gatsby. They were graceful, beautiful and funny. Grace was regal, reserved and classy. Gatsby was playful, outgoing and affectionate. I miss them dearly.
Another great vid. I have a rescue lurcher, all you described is dead on she has a quiet life and the separation anxiety is yet to be addressed. She loves humans, still 50 50 when meeting other dogs but we’re getting there. What lovely animals they are.
I’ve been having my fur baby Mercedes for 7 months and she’s a challenge, compared to my other dogs, but she’s so cute & sweet !! most definitely love to chase squirrels and eat up every toy , bone or anything she can get to !! 🐾💚
I’ve had my girl who was an ex-racer almost 2 years. She is 6 and finally settled down after a year. At first she had separation anxiety if we were out for a couple of hours sometimes chewing, not really destroying more nibbling, we had some toilet issues despite the fact she could go all night with no issues, she would waken and start howling and crying around 4:30 to 5:30. Now she can go 4hours and is settled till around 6:45 I usually waken before her. She is the love of my life, at times mad as a box of frogs but I can’t imagine life without my Tipperary girl
@@magnusgreyhound Yes it's hard but wouldn't change anything she enriched our lives very much. She was black and white 30 kilos a real beauty. We looked after her brushed her teeth etc. She lived a great live right up to the end. kept her weight never got skinny. The week she died she was still a happy confident girl. In fact we'll do it again. After some time. All the best with yours. you can keep them happy and content right up to the end.
I love greyhounds. Had friends who had two. It's the prey drive along with their size that wouldn't fit me too well. I am actually a fan of the mini version lol. (Italian Greyhound). Used to care for one of them in my pet sitting days. Greyhounds are fun to watch and learn about though and I really like the variety of colors and markings they have. Oh and any dog in clothes, I just can't get enough of that. Lol.
Greyhounds are actually very good at being left alone. I accept there exceptions. From the word go my rescue greyhound has been very good at being left on her own. They are certainly great dogs
I think your girl may be the exception, all of the greyhounds we’ve had over the years have displayed some form of separation anxiety. With one being so extreme that we have had to rehome her as it was borderline cruel to keep her in the environment she was in. As a breed they do tend to have some form of issue with being left alone but obviously not all dogs will display this. Like your girl!
Yes, we may have been lucky. From day one Amy was fine left at night, and could be left 4 hours on her own without even a whimper. She is quite aloof though, and doesn't crave attention. @@rhubarb9740
In 1992 I brought my retired racer home for a short period. Then something happened in the first week. My missus went to work and I took the dog out and then gave her breakfast. I then had to go out and it was around 8am. Long story short, during the day I had a heart attack. My missus came to the hospital and by the time she got her mother to go to my home to sort the dog out it was almost midnight. She hadn't even peed on the floor ... the dog, not the mother! Being a bitch, they tend to be able to hold it better ... again, the dog, not the mother ... but even so, 16 hours was a long time. I was impressed ... once more, with the dog, not the mother. 😁
I feel that what has been said can apply to many other breeds as well. Quite a few other breeds have issues but I agree everyone should do their research before buying any pet.
Thanks for another great video. I got my greyhounds around the same time as you started videos with Magnus and seeing them progress and settle in to home life has been amazing.
Thank you for the informative video. I would have loved to get a lurcher/greyhound or galgo. For all the mentioned cons we didn't get one but took in a large scruffy black and grey sheepdog cross.
Thanks for watching. I work with a greyhound rehoming charity and it is always sad when greyhounds are returned when it could have been avoided if people were better informed. Hoping this videos helps people who are unsure about adopting.
loved my sisters greyhounds. just the loveliest dogs. still get emotional now, when i think about them. just one thing about bloat for anyone reading: dont let them eat after exercise, and exercise after eating. or drink too much in one go
We were told 20 mins walk in the morning and 20 mins in the evening was all Riley needed. And the rest of the time he sleeps. He is so loved!! (Ps: he has an air tag on his collar in case he ever runs off). WHERE DID YOU GET THE STRIPED PJ’S??
20 minutes is a bit on a short side. I do a quick pee walk when waking up, then in the midday an hour walk in the park, in the evening a pee round, And a quick pee right before bed.
When we adopted, we weren't advised to do an hour a day. It was never any big requirement for exercise. She always enjoyed a walk and never got anxious unless we weren't home. If we didn't walk one day, it wasn't a big deal. And when we did it may be 20 minutes.
I have had three great danes and a great deal of what you say has applied to them equally. In fact "spot" is a lot like a heavier greyhound. The only big difference is that she will not leave me to chase small animals. Whereas my previous great dane would. So even animals of the same breed have their own character. Just like other people.
A great video, and your hounds are beautiful and obviously well loved and well cared for. I do disagree with you about hip dysplasia though - I don't think greyhounds are particularly prone to it. I do agree with you about bloat, and we sadly lost one of our hounds to it. All the best to you and the hounds!
The information about medical issues that Greyhounds suffered from was from a veterinary medical journal study. I would not have thought so myself had I not read this report¦ as I had never heard of any greyhound having this issue. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment
I was lucky we never had separation anxiety but made sure from day one she was left minutes at a time and then building it up to 4 hours, she sleeps downstairs so the door to upstairs is always closed and we are constantly going up and downstairs and closing the door so she's not fussed.
Thank you for your informative video!! Magnus and Scout are so beautiful-and are just magestic when they are together❤❤ I have a 12-year old greyhound!💕 Greyhounds are just special! 😇 from Jean, Denver, Colorado USA.
ARENT THEY ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL...??? THESE DOGS ARE AT THE TOP FOR GRACE,😢 ELEGANCE, BEAUTY, SPEED, STUNNING BODIES, AND LOVELY SOULS. NEVER EVER BE WITHOUT ONE ITALIAN GREYHOUNDS AND AND BORZOI, WHIPPETS AND SALUKIS ARE IN THE WINNING CIRCLE ALSO. SWEETNESS PERSONIFIED. 😊😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
Well worth being aware also, that Greyhounds and many other of the sighthound lot, are (or can be) very sensitive to the normal injected anesthetic that many Vets use as a matter of course. Apparently related to the very low fat load on these great runners. Have been through a half dozen Scottish Deerhounds, close to that many Italian Greyhounds (you will never sleep alone again! Or sit on a couch, without a blanket across you and your adoring fan!), and now have my second Whippet. Needless to say, I am pretty much of the 'sighthound' temperament! :) Almost all the Breed Clubs related to the sighthounds, will usually have some links to specialist suppliers that can supply broader collars suitable for the breed that you have. It helps take up some of the impact (on the dog's neck) when they see a squirrel, bird, or truck on the horizon, and lunge after it. Won't help the shoulder of the owner... I have seen very nice Brass tags that are riveted to collars, that are inexpensive and easy to get, that you can fill out the contact info that may get a runaway back, too! Phone number, email address, and a Reward offer, are pretty good to add in the engraving!
Our two are wonderful. Tallie Amber and Madam Currie. 2 of 5 that have been part of our lives for the last 18 years and would consider more whenever it is time. Great choice they are socially and actually wonderful companions. I say get one. You won't regret it.
Watched your channel for a long time! Love the videos! We have one greyhound and she has corns on both front paws. We got some shoes from Hunnyboots which is a greyhound shoe store. We put these on her feet so she can comfortably go over rough terrain. We think of it as us putting on shoes, how much better it is than walking with bare feet. One thing I think probably could of been mentioned for a longer period was diet, for example they can't have grains, etc. I think that the title probably would be better as reasons to be considerate while adopting a greyhound, but the title being how it is does hammer a good point. Love the videos, this one was great to watch, and agree fully with every reason made. Keep it up!
Thanks for watching. Going to do a video shortly on foods to avoid, so did not want to go into too much detail on this video. I hate it when greyhounds get returned to the rehoming charity due to lack of research by the potential adopters so I made the video to try and help explain in advance what you need to be aware of. I want the pups to go to the right home the first time.
Greyhounds are by far the most understòod breed. But im telling you they are amazing. My 2 make my day ev3rytime. I have had other dogs as pet's. Nothing compares to a greyhound. Nothing's close. I actually mean it.
You forgot to mention they need their teeth cleaning everyday, especially as alot of these dogs come from kennels where they are only there to make the owners money. Sad but true!😢
Awesome brilliant site for potential greyhound foster parent like me. Wish I knew what Country you were from because then I’d like to visit it your town and take you for a cup of coffee. PS I don’t drink ale
Greyhounds are a great pet if you're lazy. They only need one short a walk per day (more than about 20 minutes and they're toast) and spend the rest of the day just wanting to hang out and be cuddled. The only drawback can be if they aren't used to smaller dogs, their instinct is to rip them apart, so you need to make sure they are properly socialised.
Utter nonsense about ripping small dogs apart. I've seen ex-racers curled up in front of the fire with the household cat. The only time they would be aggressive to a small dog is during their racing career. Once finished, they detrain very quickly and get on well with other dogs. I'm not saying it would never happen but, in my experience as an ex trainer, it is wayyyyyyy more the exception than the rule. I personally have never encountered that situation but on many an occasion I have seen them frolicking with smaller dogs. One dog I had was really keen and we used to keep a teddy bear in the cupboard to wind her up with. I only used to have to say "Is Teddy in the cupboard?" and she'd be off her bed with ears pricked. If I took Teddy out she would be straining on the leash. When Teddy was thrown across the grass she would pounce and savage it. When she retired, within one month I could throw Teddy towards her, she would glance at it, and then roll over and ignore it. That's how fast the aggression can disappear.
@@TheRealPureBlood If you had read my comment more carefully, instead of jumping in and attacking me, you would have seen that I said that the problem is with greyhounds that aren't used to smaller dogs. Of course they can get over it, and greyhound shelters are aware of that and do their best to make sure they are socialised properly before they are adopted. Honestly, some people are so eager to be offended about anything!
I'd add that they aren't great with young toddlers. If a child was crawling all over it, tugging at the ears, pulling the tail, etc. Mine would probably react with a snip. I'm not sure I could break her of this, it's how she reacts when she's being hurt and is also scared. Beyond that, mine fits every typical stereotype of a greyhound except the prey drive. We walk by a squirrel on a walk, and she barely does more than perk her ears. Even if I tried to bait her, nope. She also lives with a cat, who she mostly avoids.
True when my niece would come around with her young children I would put my dogs outside in the back yard while she visited with her young children. My greyhounds would tell my 12 yr old son when she had enough pats, in fact my rule was do not touch them when they are on their beds only if they came up to you can you pat them
They are both lovely. All animals have downsides. I had a cat an Abyssinian that have a reputation before being troublesome and was he troublesome., but I loved him to bits. He hardly ever slept unlike greyhounds. He would be awake all night up to no good, crashing about chasing flies or dragging the towels into the kitchen. He would wreck the house trying to catch a fly. One of his favourite things was annoying the dog across the street. There was a dog behind a wall across the street and my cat would go across and jump up on the wall and just sit there washing himself, it would drive this dog nuts. We would always know where he was when heard the dog barking. I would see him sitting on the roof of neighbours houses, I don’t know how he got up there. He was a menace but a joy at the same time. He was knocked down by a car and I cried my eyes out and I am a man.
Not heard of hip issues, but the corns are an issue and greyhounds often get bone cancer it seems. There's a tripaw on my on the walk I do who had a rear leg removed for that reason.
I plan on being a teacher, and if i do end up getting a gig in-person, I'd be gone from like 7am-4pm.... I just wanna ask, do you think this would make me unfit to be a greyhound owner, considering their separation anxiety? :0
You would most likely need a dog walker or dog daycare if you would be gone for that period of time. We started with daycare with Magnus for the first few weeks after we adopted him then transitioned to a dog walker.
Most of these "reasons" apply to most dogs. All dogs need to walk/ run every day. And No dog should be left outside., or alone for long days. Bottom line, They are suppose to be part of the Family.
No hagáis caso. Adoptad galgos. La mejor raza. Y los que más lo necesitan. PS: En lugar de "razones por las que no...", hubiera sido más adecuado el título "cosas a tener en cuenta si..."
Thank you. Makes things more comprehensible to me. I used to guard a dog for someone I know and that person ruined the dog by letting him alone at home for hours on occasion, like 5-6 hours. Poor doggo. @@zemakomakis69
As another viewer stated. It does depend on the dog. Magnus suffered a lot from separation anxiety at first and would struggle if left on his own, even for a few minutes. Now we can leave him for 3 to 4 hours without any issues.
A very good point. We take ours to the greyhound trust every 8 weeks to have his teeth cleaned which he doesn't mind, they only charge £10, although we always give a bit more. We also give him a raw carrot every evening which helps with teeth cleaning, he'll only eat them if they're firm and fresh!
Love our adopted Greyhound, she is smart, knows her place (she basically rules the house), listens only when she wants to and regularly kills squirrels. I place high value on a dog that can kill prey. She is great!
There's one on the greyhound walks I go on. It barks almost constantly all the way around the walk. My greyhound barks at my galgo when playing. When he wants something the first level is a sort of excited bounce, if that doesn't work then it's a whimper and finally he will bark. My galgo will bark at some dogs, usually german shepherd. But if another greyhound growls or barks at her she will jump out of the way and then bark to give it a telling off.
Both of mine bark, my girl Rosie is really loud and my boy Tyson sounds like a big girls blouse 🤣 they bark out of excitement when we get home after being out. Sometimes they bark when playing. They don't bark constantly like other dogs but they do bark. My parents greys never bark, not one of the many they've had over the years.
I have a Greyhound and 99% of what is said in this video doesn't apply to my dog. Also if you want a dog, don't get a Greyhound. If you want a cat that looks like a large dog and costs a lot more money to run, get a Greyhound.
Most peopkle don't do it, but "walks" do almost nothing for a dog. My European Doberman has to RUN, i take him for 4-7 miles almost every day, off leash, at about 8 mph. He loves it.
They are all different. My red girl wanted to run all day, she would hike for hours because she wanted to. My current girl is a rescue and she does like to romp with her friends but she prefers multiple smaller walks like 20 to 30min clips 4 to 5x a day.
Like that you didn't treat this as a joke. There are good reasons to maybe pick another breed. Here is the USA, it is pretty hard to get a greyhound anymore due to the tracks being closed. I've heard that cerrtain cancers are also issues in this breed, but this is hardly ever mentioned. Not sure is this is accurate or not.
Thanks for watching. I work with a greyhound rehoming charity and it is always sad when greyhounds are returned when it could have been avoided if people were better informed. Hoping this videos helps people who are unsure about adopting.
@@magnusgreyhound All the sofas. The spare bed. Your bed... Actually come to think of it, I'd say we've been 'annexed' by the greys. There's nothing better (especially as it gets colder and they get more snuggly)

Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience with your Greyhound. It is good for adopters to see

Yes it's hard but wouldn't change anything she enriched our lives very much.
Another excellent video explaining the facts of life about retired racing greyhounds.

Lol.
Thanks for watching. You get used to the size pretty quickly. I thought we would get a small greyhound. Ended up getting the biggest they had.
Greyhounds are actually very good at being left alone. I accept there exceptions. From the word go my rescue greyhound has been very good at being left on her own. They are certainly great dogs
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment
Thanks for another great video. I got my greyhounds around the same time as you started videos with Magnus and seeing them progress and settle in to home life has been amazing.

loved my sisters greyhounds. just the loveliest dogs. still get emotional now, when i think about them. just one thing about bloat for anyone reading: dont let them eat after exercise, and exercise after eating. or drink too much in one go
Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience with bloat
We were told 20 mins walk in the morning and 20 mins in the evening was all Riley needed. And the rest of the time he sleeps. He is so loved!! (Ps: he has an air tag on his collar in case he ever runs off). WHERE DID YOU GET THE STRIPED PJ’S??
20 minutes is a bit on a short side. I do a quick pee walk when waking up, then in the midday an hour walk in the park, in the evening a pee round, And a quick pee right before bed.
It was on etsy. Think it was trendy whippet
Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience with sighthounds. They are wonderful dogs
Almost all the Breed Clubs related to the sighthounds, will usually have some links to specialist suppliers that can supply broader collars suitable for the breed that you have.
Thanks for taking the time to comment and share your experience and knowledge.
Our two are wonderful. Tallie Amber and Madam Currie. 2 of 5 that have been part of our lives for the last 18 years and would consider more whenever it is time. Great choice they are socially and actually wonderful companions. I say get one. You won't regret it.
Very impressive... well balanced, informative and you may have improved both dog and human lives.
Thanks for your kind words. Glad you like the video.

Thanks for watching.
❤very nice greyhund ❤
Thanks for your kind words
I'd add that they aren't great with young toddlers. If a child was crawling all over it, tugging at the ears, pulling the tail, etc. Mine would probably react with a snip. I'm not sure I could break her of this, it's how she reacts when she's being hurt and is also scared.
Beyond that, mine fits every typical stereotype of a greyhound except the prey drive. We walk by a squirrel on a walk, and she barely does more than perk her ears. Even if I tried to bait her, nope. She also lives with a cat, who she mostly avoids.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. It's great for new adopters to hear from as many people as possible.
True when my niece would come around with her young children I would put my dogs outside in the back yard while she visited with her young children. My greyhounds would tell my 12 yr old son when she had enough pats, in fact my rule was do not touch them when they are on their beds only if they came up to you can you pat them
There are no reasons. They are the most gentle compagnons one can imaging.
They are great dogs, just trying to make people aware of the responsibilities of greyhound ownership.
@@magnusgreyhound that counts for all breeds. Greyhounds make great family dogs. I should know because I already adopted 7.
One good reason is, if it gets away from you, you've got no chance of catching it.
Thanks for watching

@@magnusgreyhound Got it... Thank you very much for the speedy response!

Most of these "reasons" apply to most dogs. All dogs need to walk/ run every day. And No dog should be left outside., or alone for long days. Bottom line, They are suppose to be part of the Family.

What does it mean "been left for too long"? How long is too long for them?
depends on the dog itself, but generally not more than 3 hours atta time

👍Excellent. Also greyhounds are notorious for having dental issues.

Never had a barking greyhound
They are rare but I do know a few. Thanks for watching
Same
There's one on the greyhound walks I go on.
@@6581punk Different personalities :)
