  • In this video we show you our Mercedes Vario 4x4 from the outside. We talk about the chassis, the engine, the habitation box and other technical features. And we clarify the question, whether or not the Mercedes Vario (as we built it) is a hardcore offroading machine. We also included some nice pictures of our Iceland trip in 2019.
    In the next video we will show you the interior of our Vario. Stay tuned.

    As long as I know (Argentine native) in spanish nafta is not diesel. Diesel is diesel, and nafta in spanish (if some day you come to South America) is ordinary gas, in american english. We called like that and there are three types: comun (which I think is extinct), super and premium. Then, apart, you have diesel. So when you ask for nafta here people assume you re talking of regular nafta, not diesel. Be careful if some day you come here.
    No idea how it works in Spain. In Mexico and Central America they dont call it nafta either, since they have other terms. In S. America (Arg, Peru, Uru, Paraguay, Chile, at least) is like this.
    Like your van!
    Saludos.

    thw for the video, your trucks looks stunning with these awesome features !!
    is 6 gears enough to drive smouthly such a heavy truck ?
    does it drives more like a heavy truck or a light vehicle ?

    • @bennygoesoverland
      @bennygoesoverland  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for your feedback. I just released the video part 2 about our interior. Have a look ;-) The Vario chassis is derived from the heavy truck chassis Mercedes Atego, and also has a heavy truck engine. So the Vario drives like a heavy truck and not like a Sprinter or Iveco Daily. We like it, and enjoy the fantastic sound of the engine. Like a tractor ;-))

    Another great video!
    A couple of questions:
    1). Do any of the Vario Models have portal axles or is that only the Unimogs?
    2). Is your model insulated enough for winter camping?
    Thank you!

    • @bennygoesoverland
      @bennygoesoverland  3 роки тому

      Thanks very much. The Unimog has portal axles, the Vario not. But portal axles are technically complex. I am happy that we can keep the Vario 4x4 as simple as possible. And yes, our Vario has a habitation box with fiberglass sandwich panels (5cm thick), which isolate also during winter camping.
      Cheers, Christian

      Vielen Dank. Das Layout würden wir genau gleich machen. Hecksitzgruppe und Alkoven. Das ist schon ein tolles Raumgefühl. Heute würden wir aber auf Gas verzichten und komplett auf Strom bzw Solar setzen. Und die verbauten Plastik Pushlocks sind Mist. Da würden wir heute stabile Kompressionsverschlüsse einbauen.

    • @bennygoesoverland
      @bennygoesoverland  4 роки тому

      Thanks. Our Vario needs around 7 litres Adblue per 1000km, so almost the same.

  • @MrAveFenix

    In your opinion, which generation / model of the Vario 4x4 is the best option for long trips?
    The first generation 814/815 (prior to 2006):
    -Deposit 70 liters
    -Tachometer / Analog speed limiter (no limited speed only switch on one light on the control panel).
    - 5 speed gearbox
    - Euro 3/4 without Adblue electronics
    - Plastic finishes (bumpers, rear lights, wheel arch flaps)
    - Interior finishes in navy blue
    The second generation 813/816/818 (after 2006):
    -Deposit 90 liters
    -Tachometer / Digital speed limiter (90 Km/h)
    - 6-speed gearbox
    - Euro 4/5 with Adblue and particle filter
    - Metal finishes (bumpers, taillights, wheel arch flaps)
    - Interior finishes in black
    - More customization options such as air conditioning, heated mirrors ... etc
    ¿Other differences?
    For me a 815 with the 6-speed gearbox would be the perfect truck base but this does not exist as standard. What I can do is take an 813/816/818 and remove the electronic part from the Adblue and the digital speed limiter.

    • @bennygoesoverland
      @bennygoesoverland  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks für your message. The Vario generation with Euro 3 and before has the big advantage of less electronics and no SCR catalyst. So you have more space to realise bigger diesel tanks, which is good for long trips. The disadvantage is the 5 gear box. I know Vario owners who chiptuned their Vario and destroyed the 5 gearbox. Obviously not made for higher performance levels. But its possible to replace by a 6 shift gearbox (however expensive exercise).
      Therefore I prefer the last generation. The Adblue can be de-mapped, which is good if you want to ship your Vario overseas. You also get engines with a higher performance (which can be increased even more) and a robust 6 shift gearbox. And the interior simply looks better in black than in blue, but thats individual taste.
      The speed limiter (90km/h) can be easily de-mapped by any official Mercedes Benz dealer, if your Vario is registered as a camper and not as a truck any more (at least this is the practice in Switzerland and Germany).
      Wish you good luck to find a Vario 4x4 in a good shape with low mileage. They are rare, and expensive ...
      Cheers

    you have chance to make video. Thanks..
    from the video it can be deduced that Benny has an autonomy of 590 km. Not much for an expedition vehicle. congratulations instead for the cooling system with forced ventilation

    • @bennygoesoverland
      @bennygoesoverland  3 роки тому

      How do you calculate 590km? Diesel tank is good for 1200km. Water tank with 400 litres is good for 2 weeks. Power not limited due to solar and big batteries. Cheers
