Wahoo Speedplay Pedals Review || PROS & CONS

- My full review of the wahoo speedplay comp pedals, after trying and testing them for around 6 months. Some pretty big pros and cons to this pedal system.
After swapping to the wahoo speed play pedals a few months ago from shimano spd sl's I can say I'm pretty impressed overall. However, for me they aren't the perfect pedal system just yet.
Let me know in the comments below, what pedals you prefer for your road bike and if you have tried the speedplay ones.

Check for sideways movement on the platform. The first ones from Wahoo had the wrong Loctite. Mine came loose and made the same noise. After 3 replacement sets that all came loose I gave up and went back to Dura Ace. I also found with the Wahoo pedals the new metal Body and the metal in the cleats the wear caused Lateral rocking.
Thanks for the review
Thanks BikeSavvy, i'm starting to think that's exactly the problem. It's been mentioned a couple of times now about the first versions of these had some issues! Interesting it wasn't sorted for you after 3 replacements :( did you have the speedplay comp pedals or a different version? cheers
I’ve had that same noise on my bike. I use the Assioma power pedals. I had a bike shop look at it and they wouldn’t find anything wrong with major components. I got it to go away by simply cleaning my bike and lubing up some
components, but I think lubing the seat post is what got it to go away. How did I come to the conclusion? I found that when I stood up on my trainer the sound went away. It comes back from time to time. Can’t hurt to give it a try
Hey Shawn, thanks for the tip! How do you find the assiomas? They look awesome. I'm definitely going to give everything a good clean
I've been riding on Speedplay for about 10 years now mainly for two reasons : lower stack height & choice of spindle length..! Now that I need new pedals and since Wahoo doesn't seem to have solved that 'lateral play' issue, I'm about to switch to Shimano Dura-Ace (+4mm)...!
OMG IM HAVING THIS IDENTICAL PROBLEM! I had to take it to 3 bike shops before I found a mechanic who was able to identify and fix the "clicking" problem.
Ah man sorry to hear that!! Hope you get it fixed, I actually need to update this video
I’ve just bought speed pay titanium nanos.
The Philips screws are a pain as I find them hard to torque up properly. They feel really good. I don’t know what lube to use on the cleats though. People are generally using a dry lube but what brand is best, please say in the comments if anybody knows.
Those Titanium nanos seem like a good way to go. I might actually try them at some point. Will be interesting to see how you get on with them
You don't need to torque them, just tighten them. Any dri chain lube is ok.
White Lightning.
I use a silicone lubricant. I tried spray graphite. However, the graphite lubrication was effective for only a couple of bike rides (20 miles duration). Graphite stains everything it touches and is difficult to impossible to clean. The silicone lasts about 3 bike rides.
Yes any dry chain lube works, no need to get anything special. I used DuPoint Non-Stick dry film lubricant. Clean and then lube the cleats about once a week (tend to do about 120 miles weekly) . Currently trying to decide whether I will go back to speedplay (its stuck on my older shoe). Using spd sl for now (trying to compare ) Note these are the cleats before Wahoo purchased them
Before wahoo bought speed play had a grease fitting and a special lubricant for cleats
Ah that makes sense! I should probably get something similar
How do you find the walkability of the cleats with the covers?
Pretty good! The rubber cleat covers aren't slippy 👌 Better than my shimano spd-sl but not as good as the mtbs.
@@alexreader Good to know. Thanks
I bought new zero paddle but i have issues to clip in its so hard but to clip out its ok , i have to jump 2 or 3 times to clip i really Disappointed i was waiting for it 3 weeks , please if some one can help me how to fix this issue ,
Ah man that's a shame, I've heard good things about the zero pedals! Have you tried loosening the tension on the cleat?
I keep it in the meddle i think that one just for clip out , i dont know if that help to clip in , but i have no issue to clip out
For new Wahoo pedal, use dry lub to place all over the pedal to make it easy to click in for first 100 km
@@thwong1212 great advice thanks for the comment!
any update after lube?
Biggest complaint is with the cleat covers coming off during a stop.
Someone else mentioned that to me but I haven't had that issue at all with mine. Even during a few triathlons running through transition.
Does it benefit hip pains?
I guess it depends what's causing the pain. But they have a super flexible set up sp it's easier to adjust things or get a more comfortable position
Thank you 🙏🏼
Me: My pedals are making noise. Also me: I don't do any bike maintenance at all. 😂
Guilty 🤣 although the bike shop struggled too
Noise from pedals? Cleats? our non of the above? Try riding the trainer with no or regular street shoes. No noise? Could be the cleats. Take the pedals off and put your old pedals on. Noise gone?
I think it's the pedals, on and off the trainer with street shoes the noise is still there unfortunately
@@alexreader Just a long shot. Have you checked if the pedal has somehow gotten loose? I would take the pedal off, re-grease the threads. Who knows? Can't hurt.
@@stevenmeyer9674 guy at the bike shop did that for me, still no luck unfortunately
@@alexreader Do you have any other pedal you can try? This way you are 100% sure its the pedal.... Some of this pedals had issues and there was a lot of play after a short period of time. I would contact wahoo as this pedals are still in warranty.
@@habs ahh that's interesting to know. That's a good idea, I do have some spare mtb style ones I can try
Company is out of stock on key items
Yes man Wahoo Speedplays are cheap junk. I have tried a pair and it start having play at 300km. Where my original Speedplays still go strong after a decade.Try to source original Speedplays if you can, they are much better than the Wahoo junk imitations. Also keep in mind original Speedplay's required some greasing through the grease port. Use only Finish line Teflon grease on them once every week until you see clean white grease coming from the other side.
Weirdly mine seem to be okay now 😂 thanks for the tip about the original ones!
Been riding Speedplay's for over 20 years. Never had that issue. You admitted that you're poor on bike maintenance, you should look elsewhere like others suggested. Perhaps you should stick to reviewing something you know about instead of creating clickbait titles.
Hey Jay, thanks for the comment. Do you have the original ones or the wahoo ones? Yeah I thought these newer pedals would be easier to maintain than expected. I thought the cleats would be where most of the maintenance was needed. Just my review of how I got on with them based on my ability and experience.
@@alexreader The way a gentleman replies to criticism.
@JDP I have my flaws 🤣 not everyone is going to find my opinions useful or correct and that's fine by me! Just hope it's useful for some :D
dont buy from wahoo. they refuse to make speedplay frog cleats .. lame company
