In Part One of "The Making of a Wildlife Manager", we follow eight recruits as they start their journey to become a WM. It's a year-long process that starts with 18 weeks of police academy training. I see the value in a lot of this because there are a lot of regular citizens who want to harm our ecosystems so I commend our wildlife managers for their service. The part of this that causes me worry is that the conformity that is broken into these people will cause them to remain silent when the real crimes against our ecosystems take place. The real threat to Arizona and the lands of the world are the big money interests who buy compliance within all our government institutions. The big cattle ranchers, logging companies, and mining companies are the ones that purchase compliance from the upper management levels of the BLM and forest service. I saw it first hand when Resolution Mining had their dog and pony show town hall meetings and the poor sell out wildlife managers had to toe the company line or lose their job. Just look at how the institutions who are bestowed with protecting the land view the land. They see it in terms of a resource. Something to be commodified. True wealth is clean water, fertile soil and as diverse of ecosystems as possible. That’s a world that will foster life for future generations to come for thousands of years. The system we have now of subsidizing millionaire ranchers and selling the metal in our mountains for 30 years of economic gain.

I am glad to hear that you are considering an FWC position. I was a Florida Marine Patrol Officer for 10 years and then as the merger took place in 1999 became an FWC Officer for 12 years. I like most have plenty of war stories and as a previous FTO, RPU and Investigator can also share some really great stories. But what I want to share with you most is PLEASE develop a sense of wisdom and compassion for people but be aggressive. Don't just be re-active be pro-active. Get out of your comfort zone and be there when they don't expect you to. Brave the elements, violations occur 24/7 and if you have the flexibility as we did, gather intel, check out all complaints, set up details and deal with the perpetrators accordingly even in the middle of the night. It's so rewarding when you have the support and flexibility you need
to make some great cases. A uniform presence is a deterrent but plain clothes/unmarked catches the real criminals. The FWC L.E. is extremely short staffed and lacks the necessary funding to perform the necessary coverage as indicated in previous surveys and as a result the resources are victimized. Uniform coverage is stretched and additional resource enforcement efforts are marginalized. Of course all this is simply my opinion and there are those that may disagree, but when the dust settles you must remember you are protecting our resources for our future generations, so go and be the best you can be. God Bless. Frank Di Martino ret/ SLEO

@@frankdimartino9774 I am currently an applicant, just completed my swim & PAT, for the FWC and I wanted to thank you for taking the time to share some of your experience. I am very excited and hopeful to be able to work just as you have, to work beyond expectations of violators and ultimately preserve resources for the future generations.
