  • Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel and another Bolt Action update. In this video, I will be outlining the progress that I have made with my early war French army. In the previous video, I had explained that the plan was to replace all of the metal infantry with the new plastic infantry that have just been released by Warlord Games. My box has now arrived and I have painted the first five.
In the video I will show you exactly what I have painted so far, outline the paints that I have used to pain these and also show some recent kitbashing that I have completed to replace some of the metal units.

I have a love for the French army after 1815 .... a much maligned force by us Brits. Very brave soldiers often badly let down by their senior officers and politicians.

I'm not ashamed to say the French uniform vies with the 8th Army for the top-spot as my favourite WW2 uniform, and you've really done them justice here, Ste; really lovely work!

Cheers buddy, much appreciated! I was really impressed with these new plastics, very nice sculpts with lots of additional bits and pieces on the sprue. Highly recommended kit 😃👍

Excellent stuff. The loader picked up the rifle of a fallen comrade!

Cheers Martin! That's definitely what happened.....and nothing to do with my modelling error. I won't be making the same mistake again 😃

Nice little kit bashes! I've been thinking about my French starter army and I've decided to run it as an army of the Levant, 1941 Syria. I get to use some french Foreign Legion :)

Not only the Legion but also some obscure British Yeomanry regiments on horseback.

Cheers Ken! That actually sounds like a really interesting approach and will make for some interesting units, especially the Foreign Legion. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses 😃👍

Great vision for what bits can fit or be made to fit, to create some unique poses.

Thanks Rich, putting the kitbashes together was a lot of fun ans I always enjoy the challenge of finding the difference bits and pieces. Seeing a unique looking miniature come to life really makes it worthwhile 😃👍

Really good work Ste. I think any sensible loader would carry a rifle what can you hit with a pistol. 😁The red tone of the Saddle Brown for the personal kit works really well against the green/yellow of the uniform. Very useful guide this for painting the early war French. Curses on you, you've made that new Warlord plastic box look very tempting.

Cheers Andy! I could never really get my head around the loader not having a rifle. But its probably laid out in some doctrine or another somewhere. Either way I wouldn't be too happy about it! Saddle Brown is a really versatile colour that I've used across quite a few Bolt Action projects. This is a kit I would definitely recommend, certainly one of Warlord's best so far 😃👍

Thank you! I'm really happy with how the infantry turned out as I thought it was going to be quite a task to match the same painting as five years ago 😃👍

They look very nice indeed Ste. The sculpts look a lot better, in my opinion, than the metal ones I bought from another manufacturer. Being a fan of the early war period (and Allo Allo) I’m watching your progress with interest.Madame Edith will be impressed with those brave Poilus 🤣

Thanks Keith, really happy with these first five. I would definitely agree that the plastics are a step up from the old metal miniatures. The support options are passable still but the infantry haven't aged well. And I'll say that only once 😅

Very interesting video, with great painting work on this french set! The french LMG is called effectively "Châtellerault" (your pronunciation is not bad at all), but also FM24/29. You made me want to paint more french infantry! :) Keep going your excellent work.

That's awesome, cheers Darrin, glad you enjoyed the video! A few people have asked me about the colour scheme and, as I've seen many different variations, I thought it would help to see what paints I've used on these. Really enjoyable project so far 😃👍

Back packs were a tan color with orange leather trim. The canteens were the same color as the uniform. The side pouch was the same color as the back pack, tan with orange leather trim. The dump pouch, that would dangle beneath the back pack, was a pear color and had white leather trim.

Fantastic looking figures Ste loverly paint job but as a proud Englishman should not all french soldiers have many large arrows sticking out of them ?
