My Worst Painted Miniatures?* Why I'm ok with that (*probably not...)

  • Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel and are these really my worst painted miniatures? I have been painting more Epic Battles by Warlord Games, this time specifically Pike and Shotte with the Push of Pike box. I made a video earlier this year all about my painting Epic American Civil War and that project is still continuing but I have made a start on painting my Push of Pike box.....and decided that a different approach was required for painting these.
    Comparing the two, I am definitely happier with the ACW than the Pike and Shotte but is this all in my mind? In the video, I'll show you my first completed regiment and my thoughts on the painting technique, the mistakes and why I'm happy with them despite these errors.
    If you're currently painting in this scale, I'd really enjoy hearing your thoughts and opinions on how you approach the painting and the techniques you use!

    Solid video. Love the chat about the 3-ft-rule. One I love very well from my painting of 6mm, but it's amazing to see tiny scales becoming more popular.

      That's awesome, thank you. While I have to remind myself of the the three foot rule, while painting this scale, it was very prevalent and really did keep me focused. We're definitely seeing a lot more smaller scales. Within our podcast's community, we are noticing an increase in people working on smaller scale projects 😃👍

      I wonder if that is a back lash to the prevalance of small scale skirmish games. Give me a big battle any day in any scale.

    Great work ste, I must admit I had the same problem when I started painted epic I had only painted 28mm, and I painted the epic scale the same as my 28mm. It took me so long I had to change my technique and cut corners to complete units quickly and they still look fine

      Thanks mate, much appreciated as always. I think with the very nature of these (scale, strips etc...) a change of technique is necessary to actually get a decent amount of finished. I could easily spend hours on each strip but it's not really feasible in getting them onto the tabletop 😃👍

    I think they look great Ste, totally agree about the 3ft rule, trouble is if the detail is there i have to paint it, like my 6mm higlanders, never see the detail but i know its there. I agree with you and know what you mean but painting is a personal thing, and i do go over the top lol, thats why it takes me forever. Now turn to the dark side 6mm i know you want to

      Thanks Sean, much appreciated! This is definitely one thing I have to keep telling myself when painting these as they do have quite a lot of detail. It's a case of telling myself when I need to stop painting! I've only ever tried 6mm once many years ago and gave up very quickly 😅👍

      Thank you, much appreciated! As I mentioned in the video, the three foot rule definitely applies to this scale. Having worked on these and the Epic ACW range too, they're certainly enjoyable to paint 😃

    They look really good. I think sometimes most of us do try and do too much detail on smaller scale figures. Your three stripes method works very well- ingenious!

      @OnPointHQ  8 місяців тому

      Thanks Martin, much appreciated! I think with these it's very much a case of knowing when to stop and remember the three foot rule applies. The stripe thing was a bit of an experiment but it seems to work 😃👍

      Thanks Lucian! I think sometimes with painting at this scale, the challenge is knowing when you've added enough detail or when it's slowing you down. Definitely a learning process 😃👍

      Cheers Steve, much appreciated! I think the more I paint, the happier that I'll be with them. Certainly aiming to get a lot more completed in the coming weeks. I think with your 6mm, just getting paint on them is definitely a start. Although having seen your collection of 28mm, I can see you flying through 6mm 😃👍

    A jump from 28mm to epic scale is a huge jump. You done great work. Details in this small scale is really not needed. Problem is everybody get lost in details even if we not even notice it. Just get all epic scale in tabletop standard and have a fun game. Keep up the good work. 👍

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Nic! I know what you mean about the detail not needing to be seen as it really is all about the overall effect of the unit. I'm happy with the technique that I'm using and hope to have more completed soon 😃👍

    I got told by a tutor in a 3D modelling class once that animators work on the principle that if it can't be seen, don't work on it. Very much applies to miniatures too! I never get why people paint sub assemblies to an exquisite finish that just end up obscuring each other!

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  7 місяців тому

      This is definitely an excellent way of approaching it! The penny dropped when I added the front rank of Pike and realising that approximately half of the individual figures won't be seen and from three feet away is even less important! Lessons well and truly learned for when I work on my next regiment 😃

    @bickercity6392 9 місяців тому

    I certainly don't think those are your best work, Ste, but they don't look bad at all. The fact that you can get a good quality paint job and finish a unit in a very reasonable amount of time, well that's the name of the game when you are painting in that scale. If you get up close to them, of course you can see the flaws, but when you look at a hundred stands spread out on a big table, those are going to look like an army and that's what you want. Great stuff.

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  8 місяців тому

      Thanks Don, definitely agree with all of this. As I said in the video, its all about the mindet when approaching painting at this scale. I think when you've got multiple units on the table, any mistakes or flaws will disappear 😃👍

    It’s all about the impact on mass with these figures mate. I think they look perfectly good for the look on table. However if we ever playa game I’ll be insisting on -2 on movement for no boots 😂

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  8 місяців тому

      Definitely agree with this Dom. When painting my Epic ACW, I found the more I painted, the happier I was with the overall visual effect of all the units. I may have to check the Pike and Shotte rules for that 😅

    I thin they look good. When I started painting mine, I also thought like you, but as soon as I got a method going, I powered through them. I have completed a lot of them and they look great on the table. Are they as good as my 28mm? Hell no. But for the scale and for gaming, they are just good enough.

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  8 місяців тому +1

      Cheers buddy and definitely agree with you on the approach to painting these. As soon as you have a set method that works, it certainly becomes a whole lot easier. Agree that they'll never be as well painted as 28mm but they have a different style of visual impact on the tabletop 😃👍

    They do look definetly good enough! The bases do 50% of the total result I did find on this scale, can I ask you what you used for yours? Thanks!

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  8 місяців тому

      Thanks Alessandro! You're definitely correct about the basing. With these and ACW, I'm trying for a consistent basing theme to tie everything together. I'm planning a video about how I base these but I start by applying Vallejo Thick mud to the entire base. When this is dry, I add quite a bright coloured static grass and then finally, quite large pieces of Woodland Scenics clump foliage. This is great at hiding mistakes and unpainted boots 😃👍

      I wouldn't be worried about it mate, the figures are lovely sculpts and really enjoyable to paint. It's all about finding your own technique and what works for you. You'll certainly enjoy painting them and seeing a finished regiment makes it all worth while. Good luck with your project! 😃👍

    They are fine, not really your worst painted miniatures Ste. You have to change the style of painting to the scale your painting. Imagine how crap your 6 mm would be in comparison? Some 15mm you can get away with more detail. But infantry in just coloured clothing cant take the detail of 28mm. You can put as much detail as you can into them but they are not in the realms of a 28mm figure no matter how much you try.

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  9 місяців тому

      Thanks Anthony, definitely agree with you. I think with these, I felt like I had reached a point where I was comfortable with the level of detail that I added but didn't really want to take it any further. A scale I'm definitely still learning and improving 😃👍

    • @granapriego

      I have the same problem Ste. When you change scale you need to adjust the detail appropriately. Difficult for us 28mm guy’s to get used to things feel unfinished. When in reality they have gone beyond what most people used to the scale would do.
