  • A small snippet of the champion front running sprinter Vo Rogue. A super hero of the turf in the late 80s early 90s. He left some champions in his wake.

    Truly a magnificent racehorse so exciting to watch. Now that's what I call a champion so versatile. The racing industry needs another Vo Rogue.

    The most underrated Australian racehorse of all time! The mighty Vo smashed the likes of Better Loosen Up, Super Impose and many other big names time and time again. He won over so many different distances and broke their hearts more often than not. One of the greatest stories in Australian turf history. I could watch him run everyday. Love that mighty horse and Vic Rail was such a character. Great buds now together. RIP

    All the speedy squibs of today would'nt have got near Vo Rogue if he was racing today. It's the 2nd time I have watched this video, truly a freak of the turf.

    One of my all time favourites as he was mostly always there for some horse to chase him down. The horses he beat, Super Impose, Better loosen up and the times he ran pulling up in most of them were simply brilliant.

    Bill Collins call of “you can’t beat him no matter what you do” in the 1988 St George Stakes refers to the Hayes stable’s tactics. They sent a handicapper called Dowie out to take him on in the lead to set it up for their chance, Cossack Warrior. Dowie was beaten 50 lengths, nearly held up the next race.

      He gets my vote just on the excitement factor. The most exciting races when he set those big leads up and defied everyone to catch him.

    I'll never forget the 1988 Australian Cup race! The advertising that went into that race was incredible; BoneCrusher vs Vo Rogue. I remember turning to my mate Nick before the race and said neither 'horse is going to win, long shot Dandy Andy @ 40/1 is going to win. Nick stop watching the race at the last 200 metres, turned around to look at me and said "How the F... did i get that one right. That Race is still the Greatest Race of the Century!

    • @hswforme
      @hswforme 3 роки тому

      His last 16 starts were winless, but he had a 2nd in the 1991 Australian Cup, so he had 26 from 67 at that stage, before age and time wearied him a bit. Wasn't ever cosseted either, that's a lot of starts for a top-liner, and he had 23 placings too, and won $3.1M 30-odd years ago, so that's no mean feat. Ran 2nd and 3rd in the '88 and '89 McKinnon as well. And was robbed of a win when protested against in the 1990 St.George too. I mean, everyone knows Vo Rogue leads, you take an inside line on him when he usually hugs the rails, it's on you!

      @@hswforme I don't know if you remember - really only suited to WFA eventually because he was being weighted out of handicap races, but unfortunately Vic Rail decided to keep starting him in a lot of handicap races in the second half of his career, and he carried huge weights and got beaten a lot. I don't think it did the horse much good because he was a front running horse, that's how he raced and he just couldn't complete carrying the likes of 60 plus kilos in races with most of the field carrying light weights. You have to take notice of who he beat in the top WFA races e.g. Super Impose and Better Loosen Up just to name a couple. That's the real measure of how good the horse was. We have haven't seen one like him since in terms of setting up big leads and defying other champion horses to catch him.

    A very good horse but it was the era of steroid use and Rouge was roided to the eyeballs

    • @shanemcnally2069
      @shanemcnally2069 6 років тому +1

      Nonsense. Where do you get this stuff? On steroids for 3 full seasons? I saw the horse close up at the stables several times, he wasn't on anything.

    • @alanwhit5429
      @alanwhit5429 6 років тому

      Most horses, especially geldings, were given anabolic steroids before they were outlawed in the 1990s. Vo Rogue's trainer said that the horse would never have made it to the track without steroids because he was so bulky and would never have stood up to training ... there you go

    • @shanemcnally2069
      @shanemcnally2069 5 років тому +5

      I interviewed Vic Rail for several Racetrack stories and used the information when I wrote the video you're watching. He was admant Vo Rogue had "no steroids, no vitamins, no nothing". You can't just make up stuff about a trainer who's not here to defend himself.

      @@bushjustice6649 he cost $5000 and owner Jeff Perry and Vic thought he looked so bad when he arrived at the stable that he'd die. They nursed him back to health and Perry said No showed great intelligence and had something about him. Vic left the horse in my hands in the middle of the racetrack 20 minutes... I found the trust rather odd..... and he was just a lovely, gentle and smart horse. Not like a lot of champions.
