Kingston town was a rare horse on any continent,he won group races at ever distance from 3/4 mile to 2 mile , INCREDIBLE.Always no 1 in my book.

Saintly won both the Melbourne Cup and the Cox Plate in the same year in 1996, Kingston Town got beaten in the 1982 Melbourne Cup by Gurner's Lane after winning the Cox Plate that year. Kingston Town never ended up winning the Melbourne Cup.

Saintly was great ,but not as versatile as Kingston Town which was the point i was making.If your point is pound 4 pound Saintly was a greater horse than Kingston Town you are wrong there records aren't comparable.Saintly was great though!

Black Caviar shouldn’t even be in the top 20. She only won crappie 1200 metre races
Phar Lap at 3 lol. Ran all races to 3200 metres, 27 Group 1 wins, equal 1st with Tulloch. Several of these Group 1's, have been adjusted to shorter distances than he originally ran. Put them all into a stayers race & he'd win easily. 3rd what great odds for punters lol.
My wife and I love Black Caviar and Winx and we share a special and rare bond with them. Black Caviar was born on my birthday and Winx was born on my wifes birthday Amen

Can’t include Makybe Diva, yes 3 Melbourne Cups. But to be the greatest you have to win more than 15 races @ 41% ratio. I would replace her with Sunline. She won 13 group 1 races including the Japan Cup. Her race record would have been a lot better except for her having to race against Northerly & Lohnro in their prime. Both are probably rated in the top 10 Aust horses of all time. She stood out in a very strong era in Australian racing.

I know So you think was born in NZ but no other Australian trained and owned (before moving to Ballydoyle) has won 5 Group 1's in Australia and 5 group 1's in Europe and raced against and beat the best in the world. A true star!
In the modern era I would challenge anyone to propose a horse that had a stiffer preparation than SYT in his final 2 preparations. After towelling Workforce in the Eclipse and beating Snow Fairy in the Irish Champion Stakes he ran a massive 4th in the fastest Arc is history, backed up on a heavy in the BCS and was beaten Cirrus des Aigles. Had another two weeks off and went to the Breeders Cup Classic (when he should have been in the BC Turf) at Churchill Downs, one of the most difficult dirt tracks in the US for his first ever start on dirt. Then went first up in March to the World Cup for his first race on the Tapeta surface when he could have gone to the Sheema Classic fresh in a rematch with CDA, or the Duty Free where he would have beaten Cityscape running backwards. It's like Balleydoyle was trying to get him beaten. Like I said.... I'd challenge anyone to find a stiffer program given to any horse.
Phar Lap is the greatest horse to race in Australia. Between 25/10/30 & 08/11/30 he won the Cox Plate, MacKinnon Stakes and Melbourne Cup, along with two other group races. Something well beyond the horses above him on this list.
He gave a nation hope during a tough period. A Racing Icon of the Australian turf.
There are horses with better winning records than Phar Lap, but given his historical context and his premature death, which meant nobody will ever know just how much more he could have accomplished, he will always be the most iconic.
@@m.l.b.2908 Correct if you look at his overall record, but he won 36 of his last 42 starts once he hit his straps as a 3yo (a late bloomer) and was only unplaced once in that run carrying an all time record high weight in the Melbourne Cup. Yes, never saw all that he could do. My thoughts on the horse are that he was without limits, not limited by distance, frequency of racing nor handicap weights until it got ridiculous. Most of the horses on this list were limited in some way that Phar Lap wasn't.
@@marknorris1381 I have him at number one of these. He faced far greater challenges and his trainer was lucky to find him. Definite case of the horse making the man as far as I'm concerned.

And tulloch? he beat pharlaps ajc derby time by 2 seconds yes 2 seconds thats 12 lengths
@@brumbyrider54 Tulloch is really the only horse that bears comparison to Phar Lap. Without the illness he suffered as a 4yo who knows what might have been. As it stands though Phar Lap's record is far superior. Time is only important when you're in jail
@@bgardiner3354 tulloch lost 23months with that illness no other horse in history has been sick for so long and still come back and win group one races.
Not only was Pharlap a brilliant race horse, that horse helped ease the depression in many households.
Australia has had a bounty of exceptional horses.
Colin Hayes always considered the I'll fated Dulcify as his best, in front of Better Loosen Up who was a Japan Cup winner. David along with his father both had great horses, and should have some idea.

When i grew up it was the 2nd biggest industry in Australia,2nd biggest what country has a sport as theyre 2nd biggest iindustry?I guess probably because in other countries its mainly for the rich and elite from them only having wealth to own property where as in Australia you can own a bush property and call yourself a trainer.Apparently also i heard we have more horses than uk france and the usa,just something i heard

Makybe Diva deserves a higher rank than fifth. She won most of the major races including a Cox Plate, and still has the Australian record time over 2000 meters. She was a more versatile horse than Winx or Black Caviar that raced over a short range of distances. Though I love Winx, I would have the Diva first then Winx, Blackcaviar, phar lap
It's probably her winning ratio - only thing where she drags the chain a little. She seemed to be a big race specialist - nothing wrong with that but it was 15 wins from 36 starts.
So the best three horses ever to race in Australia ran in the last 15 years?

As good as Makybe Diva was it should be noted that she was beaten 21 times. Black Caviar was NEVER beaten and Winx was only beaten 6 times despite having more starts than Makybe Diva. Winx and Black Caviar were both far superior to their opposition
@@leedelaney70 the winning strike rates of our best horses (Black Caviar and Winx aside) go to show you, as you say, that they need to be substantially better than their opposition. So many variables are present in a race; any one of these could result in them being beaten. Then there are factors involving the horse... they aren't machines, and they can't tell you if they don't quite feel up to it on any given day. Horses rarely deliver their peak performance.... so winning sequences only exist where they are a lot better than their opponents.

If we had footage of Phar Lap's victory in the AJC Plate in 1930, which in those days was run over 18F (this is the modern-day Queen Elizabeth Stakes), there would be no doubt in anyone's mind who the GOAT was. At one stage Phar Lap was an estimated 100L in front... and was slowed to a canter for the last 2F. Worthy of note is that the horse that ran 2nd was a Melbourne Cup winner.
@@bgardiner3354 limerick won it twice , tullock won the qe2. 3 times, tulloch beat pharlaps ajc derby time by 2 seconds about 12 lengths . Pharlap would not beat the likes of might and power, tulloch, makybe diva etc. People need to chill and look at the facts.
@@brumbyrider54 Facts ey? yours is a fairly common misinterpretation of time data by people who really don’t understand racing. Do you know what the track record is for 2400 at Royal Randwick? It’s 1:26.36, set by a Queensland stayer named Spechenka in 2010. Spechenka was a good horse. He won 12 races including a couple of G3’s, including the Summer Cup where he established the Randwick 2400m track record that stands today. Allowing for the conversion from furlongs to meters it equates to a difference of nearly 2 seconds, the same difference between the times ran by Phar Lap and Tulloch. Not sure where you get 12L from… it’s ~7L… using the average speed for Spechenka (59.03kph) and the conversion of meters to Lengths (2.4m).
So, by your logic, Tulloch would have beaten Phar Lap by 7L, and the great Queensland G3 winner Spechenka would have beaten Tulloch by 7L. Not diminishing Tulloch’s performance… a comparable performance today would have been rated alongside Frankel’s Queen Anne or Flightline’s Breeder’s Cup. But, using total times as a comparison is fraught with danger even if you compare them on the same course on the same day, because race tempo, track bias, handicap, barrier draw, speed maps and a hundred other factors can impact the total time. This is especially true for middle distance and staying races. Your assertion also does not consider the 30 years of improvement in track curating, animal husbandry, nutrition, training techniques etc. between the careers of Phar Lap and Tulloch.
Spechenka ran the Randwick track record immediately after the resurfacing and realignment project that was completed in 2008-09. Imagine what time Phar Lap might have run with modern nutrition, training and horse-care on a modern track? Imagine what time Tulloch might have run? In terms of legacy, the advantage that Phar Lap had, his ridiculous 1930 Melbourne Cup carnival performances aside (4 G1’s in 7 days from 8 to 16F), was that, after dominating Australian racing (32 wins from last 35 races vs Tulloch’s 15 of last 24) he could have been labelled a big fish in a small pond. But, he travelled to the US, took on an elite group of G1 horses in the US (albeit missing probably the best 3 US horses racing at the time), on an unfamiliar surface, half fit and set a track record.
I’m afraid your argument holds very little water.

Tulloch Stakes. Taking in mind tulloch lost 23 months due to illness take 23 months racing away from any 3 and 4 year old is when they win most of their group ones if not a lot of them. And dont forget he won ajc,vrc and qtc sires produce beating the mighty todman as a 2 year old.
5 who aren’t there :Tulloch, Octaganol,from the old days-Wakeful, Carbine ,Bernborough to name a few gloaming was a NZ horse as well
That’s true he was bred in Victoria. But NZ owned trained and ridden for the most part. He’s our phar lap in that way. However the big red was bred in nz trained by a kiwi , US owned and ridden by an Aussie
Gloaming met Desert Gold 5x and won 4 and was the 1st horse to beat her and yes he won his 1st start as a 3yo in Sydney @ Wfa in the Chelmsford Stakes (FREAK).as for the great Kindergarten he is a true enigma ww2 prohibited Aus seeing the best of him but he started once in Sydney @wfa ran 3rd but was returned to NZ as he never settled in to the conditions. Any 3yo who wins over 2 miles is special. He won the Wellington cup. And carried 64 kg in a very high class field to win the Auckland cup by 5 lengths @ 4yo . The VRC handicappers knew there was a beast across the ditch and allocated him top weight 3 x he got given more weight than Phar Lap .he never took part due to injury and the travel risks during the war a true shame . I never forget my Grandad telling me just how good he was and he saw some of our greatest go around in the flesh and he said none compared to Kindergarten and I believe him
No worries. I’m a tragic for history let alone racing. And yeah that era early 20’s was full of champions you mention Poitrel there was also Kennaquhair Trafalgar etc of course our great mare and many more. I hate to detract from Winx these days but imo she wasn’t beating great ones I think champions are defined by there rivals as much as there achievements in another example there wouldn’t be Ali as we know him without Frazier or Foreman . And any horse that won 50 races plus well what more can be said Gloaming ran and was winning right through to 9 yo you think about all those trips across the Tasman back then on a ship etc I saw an interview with tommy woodcock explaining how rough it was when the bought Phar Lap back home to spell before his voyage to the states basically saying those 4 days were by far the scariest and roughest of the journey.so gives credibility to Gloamings toughness longevity and durability. People often overlook the travel aspect of what it took for us to bring our horses across to Oz back then

IMHO Gloaming should be up there with the best. 69 starts, 59 wins, 9 seconds and did not take part in the other. Won 19 straight.

Carbine didn't race under Australian ownership until he was 4. He was owned and trained by a New Zealander before that. I'm assuming that's why he isn't on this list. If he'd exclusively been owned, trained, and raced in Australia he would be on top for me.
Carbine should of never been of the list. He is the No.1 by a long way.
As i said two months ago, and still stand by, Crisp! Tom McGinley on Crisp would have won the Grand National! Crisp for me is one of the greatest horses in history!
Yes - I agree. And he was really only a 2 miler and almost won the National. Crisp was a freak and his National jockey admits he only lost because he produced the whip. Crisp has to be the most over looked Australian racehorse.

Black Cav was restricted to glorified Barrier Trials and was also good enough to win three Cox Plates.
There is Phar Lap who is the benchmark and then the mighty Kingston Town.They are the first and second,followed by the rest.People who have never seen the King should know he won everything from wfa to handicap,he was the real deal.Winx might come from behind but when the King makes his move,it gives you goosebumps

Winx and Kingston Town effectively had the same Timeform rating. You can't compare their racing careers. Geldings, especially historically will race until their ears fall off. Especially when trained in the 80's by Tommy Smith. He had more opportunities than Winx was ever going to get. He was a genuine stayer who could sprint, whereas Winx was a genuine sprinter-miler... who knows what Winx might have done had they disregarded her well-being

Black Caviar should be number 1. Her owner took her to England to prove she was the best sprinter in the world and won, winx on the other hand should have gone overseas to prove she was as good as she is. Would have done well in a Hong Kong Cup
Being a sprinter and limited by distance I don't believe she is the best Australian. Just my personal opinion, others would see different. Still rates very highly however.
@@underscore2824 haha. I don't know man - Black Caviar was pretty good. You can't argue with unbeaten in 25 starts - she does sit second all time with that anywhere. Yes I know Vain was an outstanding champion juvenile but my argument (no disrespect intended) is similar in regards to all the UK hype re Frankel. Those horses aren't what I'd call true race horses. Their connections know how good they are before they've raced them, they've put the clock on them in trackwork etc, then they put them in cotton wool with intention they are primarily going to be stud horses, give them very limited racing over a couple of seasons to give them credibility as stud horses, and then put them out to stud after their very limited racing careers. One reason why I like Kingston Town for example, a gelding yes, but a true race horse. I wouldn't put Vain in my top five Australian race horses list on that basis, although if it was a 'racing ability' list, yes he probably is there, hard to argue with how he won his races. My personal opinion, you're entitled to yours.

Quite honestly why do we have to risk our horses to go overseas to prove them? If they want to prove her bring the horses to her. Virtually disease free it would be safer to bring them here than take her there. I would have rioted if they'd taken her overseas. Black Cavier was injured while in the UK, and yes I know that can happen anywhere, it still happened over there. What happened to Phar Lap left a bad taste in the mouth.
OH and Chautauqua should have been on the list purely because he retired by his own decision. LOL

The comments bring up most of the obvious candidates from the past. A few other seriously good horses come to my mind such as: Rain Lover (two Melbourne Cups), Galilee, Vo Rogue & Vain

@@woodywilson7596 yes, and Tulloch! My Dad also used to rave about Bernborough and Flight! You can almost tell the age of the person making the comment by the names they mention!
Just have a look at Manikato his record of 5 William Reid stakes etc etc not forgetting 4 Futurity stakes and many more.👌👌👌

What about the Goondiwindi grey? I do not know enough to say he should be in the top 5, but he cannot be far off. He was spectacular over a mile, but did well over other disances too.

Do you know the name of the featured horse?
Gunsynd gets huge respect for his run in the Melbourne Cup. Close third carrying 60.5kg and not at all a two mile horse showed what an outstanding champion he was.
I love a grey. Won a lot money at Caulfield with Ming Dynasty. Gunsynd was a great horse. We are spoilt in Australia as we have bred so many great champions
@@vinorob I trust you are aware that Gunsynd and Ming Dynasty shared the same paternal grandsire Star Kingdom (Ireland) which traces back along the top line to Newminster - out of the most impressive mare ever to race, Beeswing. Look her up, well worth a couple of minutes of your time. I am originally from the same area as Beeswing and her magnifient two sons.
To be honest Tulloch belonged in there he was a great horse.
He certainly went very close. What's your favourite memory of Tulloch?

This was great, thanks, I have been researching "how to win money from horse racing" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Siyaria Nonpareil Superiority - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a great one off product for discovering how to bet on winning horses without the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my co-worker got cool success with it.

Melbourne Cup had a full field plus emergencies on standby every year.
Melbourne Cup fields generally have 24 horses going the 3200m (2 miles)
The best Australian horse's were all Bred in N.Z.
Phar Lap, Carbine, Night March, Red Craze, Mainbrace, Tulloch, Daryl's Joy ...
That's only a handful ...
Daryl's Joy won in 3countrys, an was at stud in U.S. ..
Then shipped back to Australia.
Winx's dam was N.Z. Vegas Showgirl, raced by Graham Rodgerson ..
The title should be changed to Top 5 Australian racehorses of the past five minutes (apart from the truly mighty King).

As others have staed, Gloaming should be on the list. If we include New Zealand horses that raced in New Zealand, like Phar Lap, then Nightmarch, Carbine, Sunline and Tulloch should be considered also.
Nightmarch and Sunline... no... very no... as good as they were. Carbine... absolutely. Problem is that they didn't even ride in a 2-point seat in those days... there's a lot of talk about Phar Lap's racing record, especially his 4 wins on each of the 4 days of the 1930 spring carnival. But some of Carbine's performances even make those look like a part-timer.

Black Caviar 2nd no way could not run past 1400, Winx 1st yes, Diva 2nd , I know Phar Lap carried big weights in 3 Melb cups for one win , but the mare won 3 and the win in the Sydney Cup was unreal, she got fatten making her run in the straight turn sideways and still won.

I knew the son of the owner of Phar Lap. He told me the Melbourne Cup was locked on the safe, and every time he received an invitation to come to Melbourne, he would bring it with him. I saw a Phar Lap painting in his den, n shocked n asked how the hell he knew of Phar Lap n why he kept the painting in his den. He smiled n said his dad owned it. I was floored.
Mr Davis was a very nice generous kind man. He taught me what to look at when the horses ran... that was our daily betting games watching races on TV, just to pick who would be the winner starting from 2 furlongs around the corner of the turn. A fun game.

Phar Lap, Carbine, Tulloch, Kingston Town, Bernborough, Makybe Diva, Winx, Might and Power, Vain, and Black Caviar are my ten. Shannon, Chatham, Wakeful, Rising Fast, Galilee and Better Loosen Up on the short list.
Difficult to compare thoroughbreds from different eras, but the constant principles should be: dominance at the highest level, consistency, versatility (different going, distance range), and durability. The first five in my list had all of those. Vain and Black Caviar were specialist sprinters. Might and Power couldn't sprint, but 2400m and beyond he was unbeatable when fully fit. They all did things that left one gaping in wonder.

I'll be damned if I could Put either Black Caviar or Winx in the top 10 in Australia? really what did they do that was so great? absolutely NOTHING, they just did the same thing over and over again, I have no doubt they were Champion racehorses but they didn't really get a chance to show it, it's like right wing politics, if you just keep repeating the same thing over and over and over again, until people start thinking it must be true, I hear it all the time, that is what BC and Winx have going for them,
I mean if you watched the same movie 33 times would it get better by number 33? or would you be bored and want it over? they beat the same horses under the same conditions over the same distances, once you beat them once, what does it prove beating them twice or 3 times etc?? They were more akin to schoolyard bullies and school yard bullies are not what heroes are made of, Phar Lap won the Cup with 9 stone 12lbs in 1930 and then was asked to carry about a stone more in 1931, if (like Winx and Black Caviar) he had stuck exclusively to WFAS races he would still be winning them, Same with Tulloch and Bernborough, Berborough carried the Crandsatnd, literally, he was beaten when asked to carry 10 stone 10lbs in the Caulfield Cup and the trainer Harry Plant never spoke to the Jockey Athol Mulley again cos he reckoned he pulled Bernborough up, How would Winx and Black Caviar's record look if they were asked to prove just how good they really were, like champions of yesteryear
By the way when looking at the weights Phar Lap and Bernborough etc carried, never forget that the bottom weight was well under 6 stone 7lb too, so the weight differential was close to 4 stone, or 56 pounds or 25kgs for comparison then look at Winx and Black Caviar receiving a couple of KGs from the opposition, then take into account that the field sizes were much larger back then,
I think there were close to 30 runners in the Newmarket that Bernborough won with in excess of 10 stone on his back coming from last, could Black Caviar have done that? would you put your money on her if she was giving Hay List a stone(6 kg's) in weight instead of receiving 3 kg's, so when looking to compare, make sure you are comparing apples with apples and not apples with grapes!

Winx was the most OVER-RATED 'champion' ever to grace the turf. Sure, she won a lot of races but against who? Always the same competition- none of them could have been rated 'great'.
On the other hand, Kingston Town won Group 1 races from 1200 metres to 3200 and you can include a second to Gurner's Lane which won the 1982 Melbourne Cup in the shadows of the post.

No pacemakers in Australian and NZ races I'm afraid. Racing jurisdictions all over Australia and NZ outlawed the use of pacemakers in races. This ensures fair racing for every horse. Whether races have strong pace or not, they'll unfold naturally. Most racing jurisdictions around the world also outlawed the practice as well.

He won his 2nd Cox Plate by sitting in the 2nd half of the field when the pace of the race was more genuine. He was one of those versatile horses that can race anywhere in the race based on race situation. Lohnro was, on the other hand, just like his sire, Octagonal. He needed the pace on to produce his best. Northerly beats Lohnro everyday of the week when u line up both their best days. No need to have pacemakers to produce fair racing.

Black Caviar is the most over rated horse that ever raced.l know it was unbeaten but she never beat anything special
she beat far better horses than Winx ever did.
She beat Moonlight Cloud in G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, abeit by narrow margin, and Moonlight Cloud went on to win 5 G1 races in France since then. So you can't say she never beats anything special. The horses she also beat, Hay List and Buffering, are no slouches either. Buffering won G1 Alquoz Sprint over 1200m in Dubai so he is a high quality horse.
