Some quick and dirty math gets me to about 1,454 shorts. I'm assuming the first and last 5 seconds over lap content so it's a little more coherent and that gives you about 50 seconds of content each.
@@johnnybensonitis7853 it would fuck quality so down into the dirt i don't think he'd do it for that reason alone, but as an out of spite thing or a flex absolutely.
I literally didn't know about the reduced magicka cost enchant applying a reduced enchant cost on weapons function until Pat's video. One of my pet peeves in games is when core information is not disclosed to the players.
audio design is SO underrated! i watched an "ultimate retrospective" of persona 4 recently, which took up 15 hours. and my god, was the audio editing NOT AT ALL a priority there
This might've been one of the best podcast episodes I've listened to in a long while. Really interesting to hear you go through your process! I also kinda agree on the "plot summary" analysis videos. They're fine if I don't know much about the game and am interested in its story, but if I already know how it goes even tangentially, those are really hard to get through.
On the topic of disconnecting, I once read a study which concluded that your brain more easily makes connections when it's "turned off" and your thoughts are allowed to wander. That's mostly how eureka moments come to exist and also why you get so many great ideas when you're laying in bed trying to sleep. Your brain keeps connecting different almost random ideas which leads to different new ideas and so on. I actively try to stimulate this process when writing by making sure to take breaks to go for walks, work out or something that completely removes myself from the creative process. It's kinda cool.
Your anger in the video about magic was honestly beyond words when you explained it. I had tried a pure mage build and eventually switched to a stealth archer because I thought I was doing something wrong, but not the game's magic system is just that bad.
1:06:03 I know this is an old video and it’s probably pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things but your long form videos have been extremely helpful in getting through my second shift sanitation job, I’ve listened to each several times before and each time I try to think really hard about the points you make and the ways you chose to present the game and make your argument. It has helped me think more critically about the media I consume, and helped my brain not melt out of my ears while I push a broom or mop around
Its funny how, having sunk a decent amount of time over the years into Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, I genuinely prefer the familiar staticness of Morrowind. Its somehow easier for me to suspend my disbelief and just accept it as opposed to the artificiality of the other two trying to sorta force "life" into the world poorly.
Honestly your statement about videos to work to is a huge part of why I love your stuff. I sit in the back office 9-6 sorting trading cards and listing them online, so I get a ton of time to kill and don’t like fidgeting with my phone. I’m on my second and a half listen through of the Skyrim vid already and managed to fully fit the Morrowind and Oblivion vids in as well.
I'm with Tetra and PrivateSessions on spoiler warnings. Joseph Anderson put one early in his Prey video and I ended up playing it first. It's a top ten game for me. Very glad I didn't have the experience spoiled by finishing the video first. It definitely depends on the style of video though: Anything with analysis/restrospective/critique jn the title makes me expect the game to be spoiled rotten and/or if the video is an 1+ hour long. Also depends on the type of game of course. Narrative-focused games need it more than gameplay-focused experiences.
Patrician have you considered doing a comparison series too ? I love the retrospective stuff, why I actually subscribed to your channel last year. By comparison, I mean for example you've played Jedi Outcast/Academy, Fallen Order and Force Awakens. Now we all know Starkiller is overpowered. But a factual section for example between Kyle, Jaden, Cal. And then a theory section of a video, if for example would Cal be equal, lesser or better then others since he is still a padawan for example and future games probably will show him eventually becoming a master. Just would love you intake on such.
@@zyrkugilgamesh Not so, I think Patrician and his friends could even if he did such on his own or had a debate podcast would be more enlightening, I just used a example since it was easy to do. Like in this video he's said he's trying hack and slashes, if he enjoys or dislikes such being DMC why not speak to someone who's opposite to him, if he likes hack and slash, have someone who dislikes the hack and slash games they've played. Really think it'd be a good branching out point. Like myself, I love strategy games for example, I dislike some but love others. Imagine sitting down and saying I love this game for these reasons, this is the gameplay etc, I dislike this for this reason etc it'd be a interesting concept
It would be interesting to hear Patrician 's opinion on Enderal rework of core mechanics like leveling, magica and health. Though I would want him to first playthrough either Gothic 1 or 2 as Enderal caries a lot of that series DNA.
Devil’s advocate: The reason that reviews on why good things are short isn’t because they’re good, it’s because critics and analysts don’t have an objective basis of why that’s the case. It’s very easy to be upset about something, it’s very hard to say why something is measurably and factually good without just saying “I like it.” There’s an untapped genre of praise vids because people don’t have a grasp on what it means. I hate things that are good and love things that are bad. You really can make content explaining greatness that isn’t just “I like it.”
I was really young when Skyrim came out so I don’t know or remember a whole lot about the gaming landscape before then, but I feel like Skyrim’s influence was in the abundance of open world games after it came out. It felt like the majority single player games and especially rpgs that came out after Skyrim were really into having an open world. I hope Elden Ring doesn’t extend the obsession with them. It might be more accurate to say this was Bethesda’s influence on the industry as the Elder Scrolls games, specifically the Howard ones, were all popular along with Fallout 3 and New Vegas, it’s just that Skyrim was the most popular I think and it’s still pretty culturally relevant I think. I mean people like you and Private Sessions made and are still making videos on it 11 years after it’s release.
52:35 "I hear his Boston Accent now, and as a New Yorker, that immediately sets me off." *Car explodes in the B-Roll* Love it. Absolute perfection. Also, Emil is a Masshole? That... Explains so much.
I hate my city Boston is represented in a shitty fallout game the only game to do boston well was D4 dark dreams don't die and that was cancelled I'm so sad
I would argue that Outer Wilds isn't just adequate. It shows mastery of design that's worth breaking down and examining the same way people do with masterful films. I wonder if part of the reluctance to talk about it is that you have to kill the game to do so. The entire mechanic consists of gaining knowledge as a frontier explorer, which could be robbed by a video essay. It's just so damn good that you just want everyone to experience it without spoiling them on it to get them there.
Glad to have the LARP come back We'll take the personal things and the meta commentary I really like the spoiler warning for Outer Wilds because it is a pretty unique game
(I know I should’ve put this on the actual Skyrim video but I want to see reply’s that are more recent) I was listening to the 20 hour Skyrim video while replaying Skyrim with the Anniversary edition and currently going through all of them to see how they are. My biggest complaint is the houses and how stupid some of them are to get. Myrwatch is so stupid on how you get it, the riddle is so simple and easy to do it’s just a free house. Why even make it locked if all you need is to cast Flames, a spell you have by default. Nchuanthumz is too large and a giant let down. It’s a house that can fit a small town in it. I have to run to get anywhere efficiently. The factory part is useless afterward making the house and 3/4 of it isn’t even used.

I feel like shorts and their ilk are better when they're longer, e.g. around 1 minute, and involve some sort of skit, or a clip of a TV show or something. Obviously at the end of the day you can waste a lot of time on them, but you can waste a lot of time with long form content too.
55:44 You don't get what going on if u don't watch some of the movies and tv shows so that there a incentive to watch all of them and honestly it not like that for The Elder Scrolls. I would say Kingdoms Hearts have that issues massively as you be confused if u just play the main line games and not the spinoffs even the mobile game is relevant to the story.
i don't see how non serialised movies are any better since all the movies are the same movie also marvel comics go for 100 years and that the part where it starts being it's own separate interest when it goes for so long it becomes stupid and insane i want MCU earth 199999 be as insane superior spider man was the only good spiderman run and spiderverse was interesting without 100 years of history spiderman cartoon could pull all those characters so it ended up being a dogshit about 5 jarjarbinks and daddy issues
