A true immersive sim has three key cornerstones that work as the foundation of deciding if it fits the genre.
      1. You can get through a locked door via means other then using a key.
      2. You can stack boxes.
And 3. It kills the company that makes it.

Have you tried the first two Thief entries? They're amazing games, and the first one has a very strong atmospheric presence combined with that sort of Morrowind magic where everything ties together coherently without sacrificing player agency.

    • @mythosspecialist1352
      @mythosspecialist1352 2 роки тому +1

I think that, in those terms, the 5 defining missions in those games (and immersive sims [System Shock, Prey, Deus Ex, VTM Bloodlines, etc.] by extension) would be:
      By Rank:
Trail of Blood (The Metal Age)
      The Sword (The Dark Project)
      The Haunted Cathedral (TDP)
      Down In The Bonehoard (TDP)
      Return to The Cathedral (TDP)
I will mention that RTC does have two significant flaws related to its extreme atmospheric strength. It is a very tense level, very punishing to mistakes, and needing hyperawareness to stealth through. This is because of these enemies called haunts, whose presence pushes the player to the final limit of stealth and escape (if you aren't save scumming).
However, there exists ways to kill these enemies to make navigation more convenient, and the level will even require that you do kill these at the very end. I would consider those to be a compound flaw. I would remove these entirely, making the haunts stunnable but impossible to kill on higher difficulties.
Secondly, I believe that the single exit of the main Cathedral conflicts with the level's primary objective. I would make the completion of the false main objective not as jarring by making a second way out of the Cathedral through the rooftops. This would sacrifice having to deal with the lower 3 haunts for instead traversing difficult paths blocked by undead. Illuminated by the full moon, you could then potentially being detected making your way down by patrolling haunts, zombies, and ghosts (hypersensitive because of the Eye's meddling).
Apart from those two flaws, this is one of my most respected levels in a game, for what it does in terms of difficulty and gameplay. Many of the difficult missions have less threatening pursuers in exchange for labyrinths of level design. The Cathedral is unique in that it is the hardest of these amazing missions, and it plays completely different (if you play it stealthily) from every other mission in the game. The randomized pathing and high awareness/aggression of the haunts forces you off any sort of rhythm or flow in a structurally simple level. The level doesn't try to make implausible dark little spots to prevent you from getting caught in the moonlight. Enemies aren't going to deaggro to you, because you've been running in a circle for 5 minutes. You are in a Cathedral of demonic presence that killed an entire organization of Hammerites. The game doesn't care if you quicksaved while they were on your tail, and you have to get instantly punished with death 20 times to get away.
And what you actually do in the mission is so off, in terms of character and context. Your character usually has some sort of wise crack or cynic joke, but he just remains silent for most of the mission, and what he says shows his discomfort. It's this unified uncomfortable atmosphere that acts as a perfect lead into the final act of The Dark Project (shame it was so poor).
Even you don't enjoy it, the level is extremely memorable, and you have to respect it.

"Content" sounds extremely corporate. I understand its usage as a catch-all term to cover the large variety of internet "content creators" but the word itself is just soulless. It's so easy to imagine a group of Netflix suits presenting a powerpoint where "content" is nothing but a fungible good measurable in hours or dollars. "We have 10,000 hours of content, the consumers will love it!"
Instead of treating works of art or entertainment on an individual basis, grouping it all as indistinct "content" boils everything down to this featureless gray goo. The soylent green of media.

    Halo Sperging
    Halo 1 levels
Pillar of Autum, I geniunly great introduction to the mechanics and world, I like that it has these closed corridors and plenty of human ammo, a certified hood classic
[what ever the second level is called], I like it, but it is probably one of the weaker preflood levels ( only Truth and Recognsilation is worse in my eyes) It is novel how the level opens up for the player and is open ended on what order you help the marines as well as tiny details like the hub getting more crowded with covedent after each marine party to show the covedent search from inital scouting to sending in infantry as well as the introduction of the Jackel ( my favorite enemy).
Truth and Recognsilation, I like the ship part, and the preship part, but it just does not click the same way the next two levels do, the introduction of Golden elites, Hunters and invisible elites is neat as well.
Silent Cartographer, probably the second best level in halo CE, and probably over all, the island is a sand box that never gets old for me, the digging into the catacoms is also great as well as the fight back up.
[level 5], the best level in any halo game hands down, the fighting down to the ravine and the pushing with either a tank or Warthog gets me every time, then racing to beat the elite to the banshee and green bombing the elite general at the end is a comploltion of mine.
[the flood level], neat shift to horror, the best level to contain flood in CE, a good second act twist.
Libary, the worst level and needs no explaination.
Two Betrayals, I like the begining cutscene and having 3 enemy factions, but an absolute slog.
Keyes, I never really replay past the flood introduction besides Maw because although it is neat to go through the previous areas with the change in relations, the flood suck.
Maw, I like it, it is a level that i rarely play (I have beaten the first six levels [particularally pillar, Silent, fifth, and flood dozens if not a hundred times] but I still enjoy it.
    Halo 2
Cairo, a neat level that is a good follow up to the pillar of autum, not much to add.
Africa level 1, I like the tight corridors and urban combat, the beach and interstate were a particularlly fun but.
Africa 2, I always play 2 and 3 together and together they are a nice time killer, the scarab battle is great.
Arbitor levels are all bad, except the final mission
The drop ship level, I usually skip to this level after killing the scarab, and have a blast killing and driving through these ruins and taking the farries.
high Charity, the last level I like replaying as chief, it is all fun and enjoyment until the flood arive and ruin the second half
final level, the third best halo level in my opinion, it has a nice variety of experiances and the boss fight is fun
Halo 3, I like the game until the flood arrive, but it is the worse by a considerable amount to be honest.

While some instances could be chalked up to game rentals or playing games that your friends owned (I did this a lot myself), you are probably right that some people have nostalgia for games they never actually played. Sometimes it's trying to be cool and other times you just accidentally gaslight yourself into believing that you did play that game.
Like I thought I had played Doom 2 for the longest time as a kid until I did a replay of the first game (on something that wasn't the SNES for the first time) and realized that I had just separated the first game into two distinct parts in my memory for some reason.

It's the same thing with Elite Dangerous. I watched Mandalore Gaming's video on it and just had zero desire. It looks too much like a "No Man's Sky" clone.
I try to at least once watch a creator I love's video even if I have no desire or interest in what they are reviewing. So for videos like that I'll mute them and let them play in the background while I go off to eat lunch.

2:05:15 separate channels for different kind of games is a faulty practice in the grand scheme of things. technically such tendency encourages companies not to try something different, like original crossbreeds between genres (death stranding, even everything fallout since fallout 3). or vice versa, encourages companies to release seemingly safe, yet undesirable and unoriginal products (blizzard and diablo immortal, valve and artifact, n amount of moba's, etc.). without going too deep into all of this, market observation exists.
