The general reaction to this film makes me wonder why the reaction to Eternals was so much harsher, considering that that film at least tried to do something different from the MCU formula, whereas Thor 4 follows it to a T

Loved the movie, but I think it's because it lines up with my beliefs. To quote Kurgan from Highlander: It's better to burn out than fade away. 😅 The whole movie seems structured around that ideal, better to embrace life and love, than focus on denial and grief. Powerful messaging there, even if the film is a bit of a mess (studio interference?)

I think people gloss over the fact that Ragnarok had potential to provide actual drama but the jokes drowned any chance of that in that film as well. It’s just more obvious in this film, because the humor is dialed up to 11 and they made more of an effort to be serious, but it’s so obvious that they can’t balance the drama and comedy.

@@VictorDiGiovanni I don’t disagree with this at all. I laughed at this movie a lot. But I also love movies that make me care about the characters, make me feel and cry. I’m just annoyed by Thor at this point and Gorr was the only element of seriousness that I clung to. I think it’s personal preference and your own experience that decides what emotions you take away from a film.

Ragnarok had sincere moment and actual drama, even the jokes were used to convey than to drown it. It's tricky but that's Taika's MO.
L&T is like Taika forgot how he does his own style.

The latest example of Taika losing control of his tone.

After hearing all the mixed reviews I wasn’t as excited to see this especially not being a big fan of Ragnarok, but I was surprised! I enjoyed L & T much more... I think the emotional parts (Jane’s cancer) got me. Unlike Ragnarok, which didn’t pull at my emotions at all.

I agree!! Great as Ragnarok is, it never made me cry the way this movie did.
Still surprised to see so many people say it's "too silly" because it has some of the most emotional scenes in the MCU.

In Ragnarok, the comedy was a mask. In L&T, that's all there is. The worst part was that the jokes weren't even funny.

I really dug this movie. Maybe it wasn't as good as Ragnarok, but that's my favorite mcu movie. So like for me being one of the best mcu movies isn't a dissapointment. Also like Natalie Portman and the romance with Thor in general was flat and boring in the first two. In this they make it work. Also I strongly disagree on your take on phase 4. Very nice to really take a breath after Thanos. I don't need every movie to connect to each other

To me the MCU is responding to all of it's criticism, and trying to be what the critics want it to be, and now critics are upset they listened to them

I rolled my eyes at every Jane-Thor moment before this-even the better ones didn't make me say "I want these 2 crazy kids to make it together."
About halfway through this movie, that all changed: I was rooting for them to live together forever! Hoping beyond hope that they could drum up a cure, maybe in Wakanda...
...but also knowing the selflessness that gave her Mjolnir in the first place wouldn't let her stay in bed when lives were at stake.

Even though I had no issues with the use of the volume in this movie (also saw it in IMAX) it is starting to become problematic. I feel llike Obi-Wan ended up looking much worse for it. Filmmakers really need to figure out when it's useful and when a green screen or set is better.
I agree with Chris too that the serious moments weren't actually undercut with humour in this movie, Ragnarok was worse for that. Yeah this one had WAY MORE humour but it let serious moments be serious for the most part.

For me Love and Thunder felt more like an SNL skit of a thor movie for most of it but the jokes don’t land well and runnings gags outstay their welcome. It’s almost cringe. Too many jokes and not enough time to sit in serious dramatic moments that wouldve meant more if it had more room to breathe. Plot and story felt very rushed and we got to things with characters that don’t feel earned in the midst of a million jokes a minute. The emotional beats dont make you feel the way it should. Christian Bale deserved better for sure. He was amazing as Gorr and needed more screentime to show more of his story, character and him actually butchering Gods but it kind of felt out of place in this more comedic movie. Its like if Heath Ledger as Joker in terms of performance and story was thrown into a SNL sketch. It’s a disservice to the actor and character. Gorr shouldn’t have been the villain for this tone of a movie which sucks to say cuz Christian Bale was amazing. There were no stakes really. Watched Ragnarok right before Love and Thunder and Ragnarok had a way better balance between jokes, drama, tone, dialogue, story, and character development. And the jokes in Ragnarok landed way better than in Love and Thunder. The theatre i went to only had a big laugh the first time the goats came in and screamed but that was really it. I really didnt like Thors character or his arc much in Love and Thunder. Thor has gone through the most tragedy and loss, yet his character in Love and Thunder is like when he went to SNL to do skits of Thor. He is a caricature, not someone who is humanized or one that you can empathize with. Thors best trilogy and story arc is between Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame.

The Jane and Thor romance ark is part of the first 3 pantheon of the MCU.
Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter over 3 solo movies.
Tony Stark and Pepper Potts over 3 solo movies.
Thor and Jane Foster over 4 solo movies so yes if you are not invested it just means you are not really a Thor and Marvel Phase 1 fan.
This movie was better than Thor Ragnorok just because of Christian Bale's performance(Creepy and Compelling) and Jane Foster(cancer ark and Mjonir giving power but also killing her accelerating the cancer so she sacrificed herself out of love for Thor to save him, because he saves her in Thor 1 without the power of Mjonir then Odin cries and give him Mjonir again because he know decides Thor was worthy again)
Eternals 4/10 too long no real compelling story
Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness 5/10 disappointed with the Multiverse's fights, Earth 838 Superheroes being to little of screen time.
Thor Ragnorok 6/10 the Hela ark was great but the side adventure with Jeff Goldblum was like a parody movie starring Ben Stiller on the level of Tropic Thunder I hated it as a Thor 1 fan
Thor Love and Thunder 7/10 Gorr the God Butcher Christian Bale playing the best MCU villain ever, with a more compelling and legit reason to become a villain than Thanos, Jane Foster why she becomes Mighty Thor is because of a protective wish of Thor out of Love for her so she can have strength for few months that she got left instead of dying in a hospital with chemo therapy. Beautifully acted. Starlord helping understand that it's better to find love and feel shitty than to never find love and feel empty. And finally he becomes an adoptive dad as a promise to Jane(dying wish"she won't be alone) and Gorr(dying wish"please protect her") and Thor find a new kind of Love and overcome his fear of loss by becoming a Dad(one of the main reason he drifted away from Jane in the first place).

The only thing you got right in that is Bale's performance. It honestly pissed me off how good his acting is when the rest of the movie is so dumb. Starlord also could've been in it a lot more because of his parallels to both Thor and Jane.
Gorr's motivation made 0 sense, especially since they had Stormbreaker as a key for no reason. He kills gods because they are uncaring yet he kidnapped Asgardian kids to lure Thor because he'd care for those kids???

I too was disappointed in thor. I thought there was a great story somewhere in there. Cancer…religion..gorr..death…even finding your self. I think a lot it was played for jokes which is fine BUT it made me realize something. Maybe I’ve just out grown the MCU. Winter soldier is probably my favorite MCU movie. Political story .. it had funny moments but didn’t cross the line into absurdity. Endgame played for a lot jokes but for the most part was ok. Maybe it’s the lack of focus on a bigger over arching story. You felt you had to see all the movies to get the whole story but now it isn’t the same. I’ve skipped all the D+ shows. Black widow was horrible..doctor strange was disappointing. Spider man no way home was good. Even that played for a lot of jokes unnecessarily. So maybe us expecting thought provoking or slightly serious movies is to much. Love and thunder is funny ..kid friendly except for some parts. Easy to watch. Marvel formula…2 hours villain dies idk. I think Thor just suffers from the fact they just didn’t lean into the mystical part upfront. They didn’t need to explain magic as science. Infinity war thor has been the best.

They didn't even explain magic as science. Movie treated magic and science as empty CG spectacles.
You didn't grow out the MCU, the MCU regressed.

I didn’t like it, You guys are insane , The movie had major plot holes and a lot of the humor was overused. The movie felt unfocused and I really disliked that thor was the butt of every joke as well as there being no serious moments even though there were serious elements in this movie. The part that really killed me was How Thor in this was a bumbling idiot throughout the entire movie and barely got any time to actually be the hero in his own movie.
I really don’t understand how the movie had a budget of $250 million and looked so bad with the CGI

I laughed a lot and I had a good time. But still didn't like it. Huge fan of everyone involved in this film. But it felt like a parody of itself rather than a comedic super hero film. I think they got the balance right in Ragnarok, but in Love&Thunder it felt really off. The whole time it felt like the movie was mocking itself. I wasn't able to connect with any of the serious parts of the film or the message it was trying to deliver. It seemed like important parts of the character and story development had been cut in favour of pointless jokes.
Valkyrie wasn't in it nearly enough.
We meet Zeus in the MCU - as an audience this should've felt like such a big moment but instead the character is slapstick.
Just to name a few things.
Re the comments on Natalie Portman in comedy films. Her comedy performance was great in No Strings Attached. She can do comedy. I think she didn't have much to work with here.

'My mother passed from cancer' is not a gotchya argument for this movie being good. I'm sorry for his loss, that's terrible, but using that as a counterpoint in a Marvel movie discussion was cheap and distasteful, came off in bad faith.

    • @ZachBobBob
      @ZachBobBob Рік тому

I don't think he meant it as a gotchya, as a I'm right and you're wrong argument. Just saying that he's been there and that humour can be a great coping mechanism for it. That cancer isn't completely devoid of joy and laughter.
