  • Yugioh has seen its fair share of issues throughout the years. But, if you think about it, there's really no game like it. For all of its flaws, it has an equal amount of greatness. There's a reason why the game continues to grow and to inspire so many people to partake in duels. In today's video, let's talk about why there will never be another game like Yugioh.

    Who would have thought that a Shonen Manga would become one of the Most Popular Card Games in the World?

    • @KevinGonzalez-hs7so
      @KevinGonzalez-hs7so 18 днів тому +8

      This really. I mean the Pokemon phenomenon is even crazier, while both franchises accomplished many amazing things. But yugioh could have been managed better

    • @bsgfan1
      @bsgfan1 18 днів тому +13

      You know what’s even crazier? The game wasn’t even the main point of the manga. The original story was about gaming in general, and what we know now as Duel Monsters only appeared in a single issue. But it became so popular that they brought it back. It actually derailed the entire series because everyone wanted to see more of this one game specifically. Later issues focused exclusively on duel monsters specifically, which became the game we all love/hate today.

    One of the best parts of Yu-Gi-Oh is the deckbuilding because you could have the most fire idea for a deck and go to town and if you're missing a piece, there's 10000+ cards there HAS to be a card that'll help round out your deck if its something reasonable and the best part is it's probably some random card printed in 2013

  • @dante9284
    @dante9284 22 дні тому +100

    It always makes me smile when a random card from 15 years ago is suddenly relevant because of a specific niche in modern format (Foolish return, Testudo Erat Numen, Shock Troops of the Ice barrier, among many others).
    No other card game does this. For all its flaws, Yugioh has some truly great moments.

    • @pk_tuneworld

      Oh, this is so true. I talked about decks, but I agree that having one special card resurface for a format is so fun. There's also the option that a deck that counters the current format resurfaces (bad example, but Evilswarms were okay into Dragon Rulers back in 2013-2014).

      @@Zanji1234 assuming this question is directed at me: the main games I've played are PKMN, One Piece, Runeterra, Hearthstone, and Flesh and Blood. I understand Magic does have alternative formats where you can play with a ton of older cards. Though, I was trying to argue that Yugioh having its central defining format being timeless is kind of unique.
      I do acknowledge that some of the individual arguments that I've made in the video overlap with other card games. Main point is that all of these factors in tandem make Yugioh special. If you disagree with me though, I would love to hear it! Discussions like these are nice to have - it's just fun to talk about these hobbies we enjoy.

      @@pk_tuneworld :-D well i wasn't direct my comment at you but the "well ygo has an eternal format" is imho a weak point. Considering Power Creep and Bannings exist ...ygo does kinda have a rotation every few sets when a new set totally outperforms every other deck that is currently available and while you can play your old Gladiator beast Deck you have played 15 years ago or so... they will not make any dent even on local level due to power creep and even WITH new "retro stuff" (which for me is like "hey look you remember xyz? you can play that now again!)

    • @pk_tuneworld
      @pk_tuneworld  20 днів тому +6

      It's still a notable counterpoint that can be brought up against my points about the anime. I think the main thing that separates Yugioh from Vanguard (outside of those resets, yes), is the other reasons I discuss in the video. Each individual point definitely overlaps with one other card game at the least, though combine them together and that makes Yugioh special.

    • @dragonknight1560
      @dragonknight1560 20 днів тому +4

      @@pk_tuneworld I agree. I never played Cardfight Vanguard but I did enjoy the anime... until the V Series introduce that weird Magical Girl thing and I was like "So G remake?" and then they did Overdress and I'm like "OKAY..." and I never looked back. It's how I feel about Rush Duel animes but worse. It's not my Yugioh. I figure since Konami does care for this game; that they could have done like a movie or something on a Yugioh series or 2 or more to show the respect it deserves but I also remember they just care for money.
      My only hope is the Chronicle series and hope it becomes real. People shouldn't forget that the Yugioh anime, at least DM to Vrains, is that good. Sometimes NOT that good but other times just hits SO GOOD and gets kids to enjoy the card game to play for fun. That's how important an anime should be... again, can't say the same for Rush Duel animes.

    Right now the main issue is card prices,, people just can’t afford to play the game unfortunately and with literally a new set every month (sometimes 2) plus tins structures etc it’s burning out the player base,, and to top it all off the tcg rarity system makes everything and the prices even worse which prices people out of the game
    I know I personally can’t keep up with all these new flippin sets they drop, I stopped buying any kind of boxes or packs, even though I like opening them because it’s just not sustainable or affordable to be doing that every month when you need like 12 boxes just to get *most* not even all of the cards you need is just absurd.
    I only buy battles of legend every year and like 1 other really good set from the year and that’s it and mostly onoy because I do just like opening packs,
    but nothing else because it’s just not worth it anymore when I can just buy the deck cheaper than one single box of packs costs
    The only way they’d get me to start buying sealed product again is if they bring the OCG rarity model to TCG
    Then I would buy 1-3 boxes every single set hands down, but not unless they changed the rarity system

    • @pk_tuneworld
      @pk_tuneworld  20 днів тому +1

      Yeah, I don't like buying product that often anymore either. It feels like it's usually better to just buy singles at this point unless there's a really cool set (e.g. this year's Battle of Legends). As you say, too many sets drop per year, and some of them are really bad versus others. I'm glad Konami is finally bringing some OCG rarities over via Rarity Collection, though having a rarity model like OCG would definitely shake things up.

      @pk_tuneworld  20 днів тому +1

      Yeah, everyone has their own reasons for playing either or card game. I'm happy your friend enjoys OP TCG. I'm playing the game very casually and it's incredibly fun! I would agree with your friend that some of the cards do look prettier (especially that game's alt arts) and, similarly to Yugioh with its archetypes, some of the leaders do kinda feel like the iconic characters in the anime. But, man, does Yugioh just hit different.

    im facing against tearlaments with an icejade synchro pile deck
    opponents is on 2500 lp left with kaleidoheart on field, fairy tail snow in grave and tearlament scream out with its -500 atk debuff already active and its my turn with nothing strong enough to beat over his kaleidoheart due to scream, i do have little aegirine out and aegirocassis in hand so if equipped she will be able to beat over kaleidoheart due to him having used snow already but snow can also shut this avenue down too
    - i go and summon accel stardust to access dis pater with the intent to bait at best and crash into kaleidoheart at worst since its 3000 due to scream but opponent doesnt bite so i went and equip aegirine with aegirocassis
    - opponent goes for snow in response -> i negate with dis pater but he goes for snow again this time banishing his remaining cards including kaleidoheart (this is important) leaving him with only snow across his hand, grave and field
    - aegirine is briefly 9700 atk before his snow triggers flipping aegirine facedown destroying aegirocassis due to having lost its target
    - i realize i have karmic justice in my hands now -> activate dis pater summoning his banished kaleidoheart who ends up at 2500 since hes now on my side of the field -> kaleidoheart activates targeting snow returning it to deck leaving opponent with absolutely nothing left anywhere -> kaleidoheart goes for game with exactly 2500 dmg
    i will never get something as metaphorically picturesque as this win in any other game

      @@pk_tuneworld yeh i played around with the aqua therion a bit for some rank 7 plays or ultimaya into crystal wing in the deck and even a variant with kash too but it was really inconsistent and didnt actually synergize with the direction of the deck too well
      i call it an icejade synchro pile but it did used some tearlaments itself though just 1 copy of each reino, havnis, scheiren and tear kash while maxing out on grief so it was just a small tear engine mainly used as a backup plan or disruption in rulkallos rather then for the milling but the whole idea of the deck started from trying to find some way to make use of the recently unbanned tidal dragon ruler of waterfall's effect to mill a monster of your choice that wasnt atlantean focus since thats been done to death and back and i sorta just got a bit too creative with it
      i later realize that im effectively capitalizing on selective mills with an aqua archetype so tear came naturally, threw atlantean dragoon in just to have a search for the deep sea diva package (another avenue to tear due to prima donna being able summon reino from deck) since ran, tidal and even tinola is all waters that discards for cost and i got a deck that oddly synergizes everywhere, especially tinola though since she can be summoned off of manifestation or the link 2 marincess to bring back a spent rulkallos or prima donna, reino thats been unfairly milled or even water barrier statue
      i even had a stint with blackwing sharnga and full armor master too for shits and giggles due to tidal's dumping to access sharnga and the accel stardust combo with diva
      i once even pulled off an odd combo using kitkallos as synchro material with lappis dragon to synchro baronne after searching grief then using it to dump 1 of the fusers to get to rulkallos afterwards and the deck even manages to make use of rulkallos' battle protection to aqua since i can pair it with gymir for protection from banish, destruction and battle which is pretty toxic if i throw in water barrier statue
      overall deck is surprisingly versatile as hell but can also brick like hell too

    I personally love trading card games like Yugioh, Magic, and Pokemon ever since I was a kid. Especially when they were advertised on TV, magazines, and almost every game shop/card shop. Its almost as if anybody can get into playing them no matter how old you were. Nowadays, they're only advertised to specific consumers (basically fans and players) on social media platforms, but not as much or popular enough to be shown to an average person strolling through the internet. The charm of Yugioh in the past was similar to Pokemon, everyone's moms and dads knows about it since it was everywhere.

    • @pk_tuneworld
      @pk_tuneworld  16 днів тому +1

      Why not just ask me? :D
      In terms of picking up the game (I'm referencing the gameplay here, not acquiring the actual cards), I'd say it's really easy. Me and my friends understood how to play after reading the manual + playing 1-2 games in one night. Of course, there are certain tips and tricks you can learn that boost your capabilities (e.g., you'll later learn about the "counter" system which, if employed well, can be absolutely detrimental to winning games). But, the basics are completely reasonable. And, I'm biased, but yes, the game is fun! Matches bar top cut are best of one, so a game can be really quick. I also have found the majority of this community to be overwhelmingly positive.
      The main issue with the game right now is prices. Bandai has been having printing issues, leading to a scarcity of product on shelves. If you're the type of person that likes buying packs or, sometimes, even structure decks, it might be hard to find these things. Singles, in my eyes, are the way to go (make sure to practice a deck first on the fan-made, online simulator, "OPTCG Sim"). But, some singles will be really expensive due to the former. Just keep that in mind.
      TLDR - I'd argue it's fairly easy to pick up and fun to play. The only problem you'll face is a lack of product for the time being + some cards being expensive.

    • @pk_tuneworld
      @pk_tuneworld  17 днів тому

      Even then, my argument is that it's not a strict rotation. I don't deny that many older cards get powercrept and, hence, invalidated competitively as time goes on. I mention this point at the end of this video. Also, your point regarding how any older decks played today are mostly comprised of new legacy support is also a completely valid point that I didn't think about. Nonetheless, there's nothing stopping you from giving older decks a shot (those that don't bank on all the new support just to be good, or those that don't have new support at all). And, even if it may not be a frequent thing, I still enjoy getting schooled by players with these strategies either on MD or at locals. If you disagree, completely fine - I appreciate your take and am glad you shared it! It's fun to talk about these things.

    @aka_Ingmar 20 днів тому +2

    I understand why people love the idea of not losing cards when a new set comes out or a new format comes out however this isn't a great solution when it comes to card design because Konami often forgets how older cards synergize really well and weren't put in check because the time that they were made they didn't have a once per turn clause or whatever and then they become inherently busted. I get why there's pushback for set rotation but I still don't agree the fact that set rotation couldn't be implemented in a separate format

    • @aka_Ingmar
      @aka_Ingmar 20 днів тому

      Also you're just wrong about how set rotation works. Just because a new set comes out doesn't mean that all cards are completely invalid. It's called reprinting those cards and allowing them on the rotation list itself. There are legacy cards that exist in other games that just get rotated back in

    • @pk_tuneworld
      @pk_tuneworld  20 днів тому +1

      I won't comment on whether or not Yugioh should have set rotation or not either in the main game or in an alternative format like you mention - it's definitely a complex debate, and both sides have their pros and cons. I'm on the side of no set rotation, but I do see the many issues with this approach (as you say, sometimes there are really weird and toxic synergies that arise). I will say, though, that I didn't explicitly state set rotation lacked reprints - I omitted the matter from the video because it didn't feel necessary to bring up. I'll explain my thought process.
      Yes, games with rotations do have reprint systems. Pokemon reprints key trainer cards (most notable one I can name right now is "Boss's Orders"), and Hearthstone has a "core set" that allows the devs to rotate back in any cards that are relevant for the new era. Nonetheless, these games can't always rotate in whole decks from previous eras without creating some alternative format. Take Pokemon for example: one of my favorite decks from around Cosmic Eclipse era (2019) was "Reshirom", a Reshiram-Zekrom duo card that acted like a glass cannon by detaching all of its energy to one-shot foes. There are definitely Pokemon that use a similar mechanic in the current format, but they don't play exactly like Reshirom did back in the day between cards like "Welder" and "N's Resolve" mass-accelerating energy. Plus the fact I'm not playing with a Reshiram-Zekrom duo card.
      With Yugioh: ignoring the flaws of rotation + the fact that older decks will undeniably be power crept to some capacity, I have the option to still play with, say, Crystrons released in 2017. I don't have to wait for Konami to miraculously reprint that archetype's key support cards let alone the archetype itself. I have it at my disposal anytime I want.
      If you disagree with me, would love to hear it! I'm open to these sorts of discussions - I make these videos to talk about the game and or concepts surrounding it. I appreciate the takes you've presented!

    Just wish it felt like it did back in the day... Rush Duel anime for the last like 4 years is really not helping in the slightest, imo. • @pk_tuneworld
      @pk_tuneworld  20 днів тому +2

      I think the biggest shame with Rush Duel is it has the potential to do well with older people, but Konami hasn't brought it to the west. They brought it to Duel Links, sure, but if we could try out the physical card game in other countries, it might get more people into it.
      I agree with you that it would be nice to have a more mature show again, as you can still market a game to kids with older characters.

    I don’t know how you can say yugioh is a fun game and support that with t0 combos and negates. That’s why there will never be another yugioh. Cause if you aren’t bound to it through nostalgia, it’s not fun
    Also hearthstone has a wild format where cards don’t rotate and magic has legacy and commander. You have fewer options than those games for deckbuilding because you have fewer formats

    • @pk_tuneworld
      @pk_tuneworld  16 днів тому +2

      Well, because it is to some people. I completely understand the disgust with all the t0 combos and negates. I myself have gotten tired of it too at times - I alt-tabbed out of Tearlament format when it happened and am currently alt-tabbed out of Snake-Eyes format until the next banlist. There have been occasions where I get frustrated at a deck completely locking me out of a turn using some disgusting combo (Floowandereeze should not still have Feather Storm).
      Yet, to say I can't call Yugioh a fun game feels weird. The game is still doing incredibly well. Yes, yes, Yugioh has a new player problem - it has plenty of other problems too (complexity, product issues, the issues you stated). But, there are still a ton of people who enjoy the game, me included, completely separate to the nostalgia. And it's not because we're sadistic and enjoy invalidating our opponent, or because we just want to win. I play the most AWFUL decks and rarely top locals by choice. The decks I play (e.g., I always flex the PUNK archetype) have no connection to the anime nor to any iconic decks of the past. There's just a weird charm to the amount of crazy things this game offers.
      Also, yes, I am aware Hearthstone and Magic have legacy formats. I am aware Yugioh's current lack of alternative formats is very limiting, and I do wish we had more legacy formats or just funny side formats. The point of the "set rotation" part of the video is to just stress how Yugioh emphasizes its timeless format as THE main format. Plus, when taken in tandem with other points listed in the video, this culminates in the unique game Yugioh is.
      That said, though, I completely respect your opinion if you don't like Yugioh. The game, though it resonates with many, isn't for everyone. Plenty of people in this comment section have already voiced how they dislike "X" or "Y" including the same thing you said. There's nothing wrong with that - if anything, I'd be alarmed if this game was considered the shining example of card games. I just want to argue that it's a special type of game amidst the others.

      @@pk_tuneworld I think you made a cool video and it really speaks on the problem with yugioh. They have a sick IP and way to advertise it and they make a bad card game. Yugioh is plagued with bloated card design and the best thing they could do is a hard reset on the game.
      Magic has a similar problem, and they address it with set rotations and casual formats, but still get outsold by Pokemon because Pokemon has a sick IP and simple, accessible game. If Konami was making a good card game, you would see the TCG performing somewhere between those properties. It’s not. It’s performing worse than Magic, and there’s nothing creating hype for Magic outside of the TCG.
      I just think it’s telling that there is so much propping up Yugioh to be a successful card game and it’s still losing relevance. It’s been completely dropped by my LGS in the last two years and even at Walmart, there’s hardly any space dedicated to yugioh cards because they’re not selling.

      I appreciate this response! I don't really have a counterpoint to it because you're completely correct. I'm glad you like the video, but, as we're both aware, it forgoes talking about the game's problems to momentarily be positive. Yugioh is sick, sure. But, it's undeniably riddled with problems at the moment. It's a shame too because, in my opinion, it really wouldn't be that hard to fix some of them. Introducing and promoting extra formats like Magic doesn't require some grandiose effort (to my knowledge). I guess Konami is sort of trying with the recent Time Wizard 3v3 YCS, but they could be doing so, so much more. Sure, it might suck to have to reprint sets, but it's clear the company doesn't have printing issues.
      In terms of designing sets that do well - not sure what Konami's angle at present is. Probably greed - they do tend to delay reprints for certain sets when they could easily spread these out more to other sets that need the flair. Regardless, it's a shame to see LGS's drop the game because of this (or for Yugioh's less relevance).
      I still love the game and think it'll be around for some time. I wouldn't be 100% confident in claiming it's "dying" like some other Yugitubers say. Nonetheless, the game is sure to continue losing relevance if Konami doesn't act more.

    Engine's and handtraps ruined this game

    • @pk_tuneworld
      @pk_tuneworld  16 днів тому

      Very interesting point. I myself have gotten used to them, but I understand the angle. With engines, I think if they're not too commonplace, they're okay. For example, Scraps, to me, is fine. It's neat for machine decks, but not everyone is using it, and it's very, very flawed. But, when an engine becomes completely splashable everywhere with little drawbacks like Diabellestar or Adventurer (the latter in reference to when it was good), I wholeheartedly agree that they limit deck building a TON. Also makes it so that certain formats become too expensive.
      Hand traps I would be a bit hesitant to look down upon. I feel like they are a little necessary for the current pace of the game. Though, you could make the argument Konami introducing hand traps is what led to them being able to make the game faster in the first place.

    Sorry yo pop your bubble, but Yugioh Animation Chronicles isnt something to "wait and see", it's just what we saw, there is no anime or anything *confirmed* past it.

    All of the things you described about yugioh that make it unique due to its lack of mana system aren't actually unique to yugioh, magic has those things too despite having a mana system. The lack of a mana system is what causes those back to back tier 0 formats you mentioned. It is a downside of the game, not an upside as Konami themselves originally made links to rectify (unsuccessfully). As for the variety of decks, those come with age of the game. Given enough time younger games like one piece may have such a variety of decks as well. And in terms of anime, Digimon currently has a TCG manga that's pretty good and captures the essence of the game in the same way. Given time other games could develop those as well. That Pokemon doesn't already have one is shocking to me but it wouldn't be a challenge at all for them to make it so. Yugioh is struggling to gain new players, and relys solely on the nostalgia of its core playee base thats still hanging on, this is why the anime pivoted to rush duel. Kazuki takahashis original manga was iconic, and the game that shuiesha and Konami spun out of it has been a cash cow for them up until now but it's looking more and more each year like that may soon come to an end.

    Take yugioh away from konami and tv tokyo first
    Give them to companies that will know how to deal with player bases and keep the game alive and the anime instead of only seeking profits

      As interesting as this would be, we know Konami would never give up a game that's generating them so much revenue :( - also, for all the negativity we give them, they have kept the game afloat for years now at least? We've definitely had low points like right now with Snake-Eyes format, but there have been a ton of highs in the past years too (Unchained format before AGOV, Rarity Collection, the hope of Animation Chronicle, etc)

      @@pk_tuneworld I know its unrealistic but its the best solution I see
      they are not a demon of course but they are way many flaws in their management , yes we had good formats but the way they deal with bad format and players feed packs
      not to mention how they ruined last ygo series , vrains, it had many production issues and filler eps when it had potential similar to 5ds
      but lets hope they actually do chronicles (but please keep tv tokyo away)

      I don't think they necessarily need to give it away, but there does need to be better handling of the products and franchise as a whole. A bit more transparency would be nice to know about any potential plans for the franchise and reasons for ban lists. I love that they often release concept art and even have the art books, but hate that they can release a full art book with the artists' notes and not credit them. Also, the ever decreasing support for our friends in Europe is crazy when the official YuGiOh EU channel puts so much effort and love into presenting the game. They could also do with re-negotiating the contract to allow for cash prizes like most card games are doing now, and if they can't, at least include better prizes so the players can make some profit.
