  • Your laptop is likely the most expensive part of your keys rig... So why are you trusting its well-being to some wobbly music stand? Have you ever had your laptop fall in the middle of a set?! My heart jumps out of my chest just thinking about it. In the past I've advocated spending a bit more money to purchase a "laptop stand"- a music stand for laptop that is supposedly designed for the task. But is there really any difference? So I put on my "science" hat and put together a little test to find the best way to keep that laptop secure on stage.
In this new video I test
    A) A Music Stand
    B) A TV Tray
    C) A "Laptop Stand"
    *spoiler alert - I was wrong!! 😆

I’ve lately been using an EV ZLX-12P. Good luck knocking that over.

If you use a stand, make sure the legs are quite long, this works best, my K&m has 3 feet each 1 /12 foor long, which gives much more stabillity. I use it in my small setup. In my bigger setup, the laptop stands on top of my 19” rack..

Hi, I’m setting up my worship keyboard rig. I’m fairly new to all of this - on Sundays, would you recommend an 88 key digital piano + 61 key midi keyboard or the new 88 M-audio hammer midi keyboard?
Pros & cons if possible :) Ty for the videos, really found them to be useful!

It's really up to you! Any keyboard that sends midi will work :)

How about this idea? If you have an X-style keyboard stand, you can buy this flat tray that fits on top. I needed a slightly bigger surface for my wind synth (Sylphyo) setup that would hold my laptop plus a couple other bits (Korg Nano, bluetooth receiver, etc.). Seems VERY sturdy, with just the right amount of room to spread out, without being too big (tray is 28x14.5). I just ordered, will let you know how it works out!

I use a laptop when gigging (usually). I did a gig in a big club. Great sound and lights but but they loved using a smoke machine. For anyone who has ever played on stage with a smoke machine, you are worried about 2 things. 1. It leaves a layer of 'oil' all over the top of your equipment and 2. It's as slippy as hell!
The gig went along the lines of this..........
Due to the oily shite being applied to all my gear, my laptop started to move (sub-bass). It ended up falling off the stand. In a panic, and trying to recover the situation, I made my way around the front of my keys rig to pick it up. In doing so, I trod on some gaffer tape (which has been turned into an oily skating rink!!!! ) I went arse over tit in front of 500 people. When the laughter had died down, I repositioned the laptop and we carried on with the gig. Needless to say, ever since then, I have ensured I have a very good laptop stand. Roland and K&M being two of the best.

Very cool test. You should look at some solutions pro photographers and cinematographers use with C-stands and rolling c-stands as laptop stands. Some solutions are very strudy (but may be expensive too...) For example tether tools make some very professional accessories.

I’m curious how a mic stand with a laptop mount would have fared

Yeah - those have a weighted bottom often and very low wobble. I haven’t seen mine budge like at all while I’m jumping around.

Uh...hit the TV tray from the other side. Of course it's more stable if you hit it at the end of the long side. If you hit on the side, I have absolutely no doubt it would fare worse than both of the others.
Why am I here watching this idiocy...lol

Instead of testing striking with the same angle 5 times repeatedly, should have tested 3 or 4 different angles, depending on number of feet. Murphy’s Law means knocking something over at the weakest possible angle. Not striking the TV stand from the front makes the testing look rigged.
