  • Rob Renfroe and Tom Lambrecht of Good News, an advocacy group within The United Methodist Church, penned an article to inform their audience of the plan to end operations now that the transition they undertook has been effected. In a spirit of gratitude, they acknowledge the body that hosted their ministry and the people who mentored them along the way. I salute them for their ministry and acknowledge the ways in which they blessed Methodism in these most recent decades. Enjoy.

Rob’s video series on the apostasy of the UMC was extremely helpful to me in educating my people. Thank God for faithful servants. They spoke truth in the face of lies from the enemy coming from pulpits. Thank you my brothers. This causes me to also be grateful for the opportunity to serve as a non-Methodist in the UMC for sixteen years before leading my congregation out. I had a DS who was one of the great mentors of my life.

Remember all the "little people" who worked for and with Good News behind the scenes.

Jeff, I'm so grateful for your ministry. As a Southern Baptist "outsider," I have often turned to the Plainspoken podcast over the last 18 months or so to find information and perspective on what was happening in the UMC. Thank you for your firm conviction and spirit of gentleness that have been twin hallmarks of every episode I have watched. I grew up not far from Joplin, MO, where, back in the 70s and 80s, one of those evangelical stalwarts, Bill Henderson, pastored First UMC and led that congregation in support of the Good News movement and other initiatives which promoted the authority of Scripture and the Lordship of Jesus. So thankful for men like him who stayed faithful in the face of theological liberalism and social gospelism. Thanks again for sharing this touching letter from Rob and Tom.

I was a child in the EUB church. It was quite conservative. When Dad had the call to the ministry, I was in jr high. There were so many Evangelical, conservative pastors then. He had many mentors. He knew Riley Case, and he was thankful for the Good News movement...memories that bless and burn. Dad passed in 2012, but I know he would have been both heartbroken about the UMC and heartened by the revival in the GMC!

I grew up in San Francisco and had no clue what Christianity or any other religion was. I remember very well growing up with other boys that all had the same interests as me. I also remember having that curiosity as they did, of the opposite sex long before puberty along with those same boys. Silly stuff like sitting at the bottom of stairs and trying to casually look up the skirts of girls as they top the stairs and getting that little thrill of a slight flash of panties as my friends did at the age of six and up. I also remember the grown Gay men trying to entice me from age six on up. They would try to entice me with all the things they found out from talking to me. Those men would try to get me to come to their apartment to see their book, fish, or rock collection. I was a street wise boy because we were poor. My mom worked all day as a secretary. I thankfully never fell for their charms. My friends, unfortunately for them, did fall for those different techniques of enticement and were molested. To this day they are homosexuals (I mourn the loss of a wonderful word: Gay). When were at parties, those same friends also say they’ve always been attracted to the same sex when people ask them. I dare not correct them in fear of losing their friendship. I dare not remind them of that first experience whether it be with a friend they loved so much they just wanted to kiss them, or that scary dude his mama lived with and he didn’t understand what was happening. Molestation is a very personal thing, whether it be from a mutual friend or some scary stranger. The only way the mind can deal with it is to convince oneself that it’s natural. The truth will set them free, but today’s society encourages falsehoods of being born that way because it’s easier and more convenient than the cold honest truth. This isn’t hateful, it’s just the truth.

I was so glad in 1970 when the public schools in North Carolina announced that girls could wear slacks. Even little boys can be predators

My mother worked as a secretary for a while at the Good News office in Wilmore back in the day.

Speaking of James Heidinger II.... You need to interview him on his book the rise of theological liberalism and the decline of American methodism! That would be an interesting interview....

The UMC didn't fail because the Traditionalists didn't fight, it failed because of the seminaries that produced liberal pastors who valued the world's values over Jesus. The traditionalists that remain in the UMC don't have any place to go. The GMC doesn't have churches in many areas of the US, especially in the suburban areas. I'm un-churched because the nearest GMC (a large, wealthy congregation with a $1.75MM mortgage) is 23 miles away; they could afford to pay to dis-affiliate.
