PlainSpoken is a project undertaken by Jeffrey Rickman, an elder in the Global Methodist Church. Its purpose is to restore to Methodists a sense of identity by working through developments in modern Methodism or the larger Christian faith, often using scripture and foundational Wesleyan doctrine. The hope is that a new sense of vital piety and disciplined discipleship might emerge among a new generation of believers.
While Jeffrey's churches support this ministry, it is not officially a ministry of the churches in Nowata and Delaware. Rather, this is a labor of love on Jeffrey's part, with the help of TJ. Eventually, both hope that this can be something that can result in more income, such that TJ can quit his job and Jeffrey can fund increased ministries for his churches.

I tried to offer a succinct report on the day's proceedings and what it heralds for the future of the GMC. Good things! We have some new bishops, some solid ground on education, and some other good stuff. Spend a few minutes with me!

I could follow easily with the format for UMC GC but I was lost trying to get two devices going to watch GMC GC. Nor was going back to watch you after the Conference session. I actually gave up on both, neither engaged my attention like the UMC format. Frankly think GMC missed a good thing. Maybe next time.
I was a UMC member who loves Jesus and His Word. This is more important to me. I left the UMC denomination. I feel I am still a member in The Church, The Body & Bride of Christ.
I look forward to hearing your interview with Carolyn Moore.
Good morning from Appomattox Va
Loved watching the spirit of everything. Wish we would've set aside a specially called group to come up with a mission statement and bring it back in 2026. The first one was created by one guy, and now this one by one guy. I like that it's more Wesleyan, but I don't like just "make disciples" on there. We could've been even more specific. Not sure why we had to rush that. Don't like the separation of a vision and mission statement as well. Just go with a mission statement and then some visionary goals or something. Anyway, glad about what happened over all.
The Global Methodist Catechism, while mostly good, contains two heresies in it. Those errors need to be fixed first before we adopt it as an official Catechism
The Apostle's Creed did not come from the Apostles, but was a later invention in Northern Italy. To this day the Apostle Creed is seldom to never recited by the Eastern Orthodox Church. The phrase "He descended into Hell" has weak exegetical evidence. There are a handful of biblical passages when read together, appear to support the doctrine, however if you examine each passage in its own context you will find that each of those passages do not teach that Christ descended into Hell. That being said, I support the Apostles Creed and recite in my GM Church every Sunday
Charismatic theology was clearly preferred over Wesleyan theology at the Convening General Conference of the Global Methodist Church
I definitely saw a lot of charismatic worship. Could you help me line out the differences between charismatic theology and Wesleyan theology?
@@plainspokenpod Wesleyans are Charismatics in that we are "non-cessationists". However, there are some important differences. We Wesleyans emphasize the Fruit of the Spirit (holiness) whereas the Charismatics emphasize the Gifts of the Spirit (miracles). Sanctification "drives" our theology whereas Supernaturalism "drives" their theology. We are both pietists, but Methodism, because it is balanced out by a sacramental theology, does not fall into the more extreme pietism of the Radical Pietists of old, or the Charismatics of today. (Charismatics being Zwinglians in their sacramental theology, or lack thereof) MOST IMPORTANTLY: Wesleyans (like everyone else) believe that the Holy Spirit directs/leads/points people to Jesus Christ, whereas Charismatics (in their more extreme form) believe that Jesus directs/leads/points people to the Holy Spirit. Thus we differ in how the Son and the Spirit relate to one another in our Trinitarian theology.
I think this is an important conversation & I appreciate the way you clarified these two streams. However, from what I heard & experienced, there did not seem to be a competition between the two: it seemed to me that whenever the Person / work / gifts / infilling of the Holy Spirit were highlighted, the Sanctification / holiness / fruit of the Spirit were equally spotlighted. Does the global nature of this group affect that dynamic as well, knowing non-Western Christianity as a whole tends to be far more open to the work of the Spirit? I am far from a Wesleyan scholar, but I would say this gathering sought the empowerment of the Spirit in the way that Methodism seeks to recover plain, primitive Christianity. Were you able to be there in person or watching online? I can see where specific preachers & worship moments during the conference could lead to this reflection, but having been there in-person for the duration, taken as a whole I would disagree with such a sweeping conclusion. Blessings friend!
I’m a couple of hours after the livestream in the old barn where my chickens roost doing my daily milking of the goats.
I miss the Creeds in my Wesleyan Church. Though I confess it in BCP daily offices.
Yes, thank you so much for streaming these watches and the summaries.
Can you do a show on the highlights? Also, how long will it be before a new GMC Book of Discipline will be published?
Overall, very positive. My only push-back is the absence when reciting the Apostles Creed about Jesus’s decent into hell (realm of the dead). While this statement is normally deleted when Methodists confess their faith as part of the liturgy, it’s still remains part of the original Creed throughout the majority of liturgical churches throughout the world. Seedbed published a small study on the Apostles Creed, authored by Timothy Tenant. In it, he defended the inclusion of that part of the original Creed, and stated that there is no justification for its removal. Having come from a church tradition that confessed it and the Nicene Creed on a regular basis, I agree.
He descended into hell.
Thanks for all you do brother.
Thank you again.
Also, what happened with our Mission Statement? Was it changed?
I have that Commentary that you have open. That voluminous series is my favorite commentary.
I heard that we adopted a constitution. Is this correct? Did the proposed constitution keep the provision to change/alter/combine the 25 Articles and EUB Confession???
What does it mean for the GMC to be “accredited” in several countries? I have no idea. Please advise.
As someone who works with records, what do you then do with the baptized children (when someone decides that their baptism was invalid) who need their baptismal certificate to get married? Either in lieu of a birth certificate in some states or for marriage within a Catholic Church?
Elites building and securing the institutional “penthouse” while local churches are continually drifting away
Thank you for the helpful summary of the day.
Hi
I’m UMC I find it surprising umc go allowed plain spoken more access than the GMC
I think the UMC only figured it out the last day they could stop him. GMC Conference seems pretty boring as they are mostly into church details and aren't debating politics.
Happy birthday Jeffrey

Return to emphasis on sanctification, yes! Fetter Lane was more pivotal than Aldersgate for Wesley. Carolyn Moore nailed it, THERE IS MORE!
Trust yet to be earned
Will the UMC next re-write Holy Scripture to better fit a progressive church?
Is there no sound on youtube?
Yes more nominations from non American places
I think that you are mostly right Jeffery. I think that the conference should investigate faithless versus inability
There we go
Yes no sound on UA-cam

Good morning from Appomattox, VA
Excellent!
I guess I would have to be described as crypto-Catholic, then. I prefer a liturgical worship format as I feel that it is more worshipful and more edifying as well as tying the present to the past. As another poster said, this is traditional, and for a good reason. My hope would be that every Global Methodist church would use a common liturgy and generally similar worship style and that one could visit any Global Methodist church and feel at home in worship there.
Imo worship is meant to be emotional (emotion is one part of the many parts of worship). Of course, we should not fall into emotionalism or crypto-charismania. But modest contemporaneity does not hurt worship per se.
I like what they did about deleting the Bishop nominees dictated to them by the TLC. It was never in the TLC power to do what they did. The General Conference and not the TLC, is the ruling body of the Methodist Church. I also like the idea of each annual conference having the opportunity to put forward their own nominee for Bishop (regardless if the nominee becomes bishop or not)
Believe it or not, I too do not like the overtly emotional services typical of Pentecostal and Charismatic churches. Traditional services with traditional hymns and a qualified liturgy is better. That's not Crypto-Romanism. Crypto Romanism is another thing. But you are right that there are both present in the GMC, Crypto-Romanism and Crypto-Charasmatic. Best to avoid both extremes. But I like that you are using those categories 😉
Would love to know who the one was that voted against everything. Would like to know why.
Glad that Keith is ok
Thanks for the coverage. Good so far.
