Gojira is one of my top bands now, according to my Spotify year-end report. 🤣
I REALLY struggled getting into them in the beginning though. I kept thinking I should like them but it was hard to even get through a song without wanting to skip to something else.
I ended up finding a few of the more accessible songs and listened to them quite a bit and at some point it just kinda clicked with me. I understood the sounds I was hearing and how they were being used; almost like learning a new language. Now I listen to them almost daily, but I still find that I don't care for their first couple albums. I don't think they'd really found their sound yet at that point.

I’m getting that feeling with both honors and meshuggah. You have to get on their wave length…

@@BaldHeadedMETAL I have the same experience with Meshuggah. I like them now but I almost needed Beginner Level tracks to start with.
Koloss is a great album to start with for Meshuggah. Break Those Bones (...) and I am Colossus are great tracks.

Ya but regardless of finding your sound Mario has no sound. He's free to do what he wants and that's what's took a toll on my neck the most :'( their first three albums I want to fucking tattoo on my face. Not to mention after growing up with heavy stuff like soad and old KoRn and rammstein and static-x but after only liking their first 3 albums I have become addicted to EVERY song. All of them I thoroughly know and it's never been topped. I think of their old album art at times when hearing amazing things on their later ones.

Simply one of my favorite performances of the band. This atmospheric atmosphere (I don't know if this expression is correct in English) works very well for me. Gojira's music is usually very heavy, but deeply spiritual. A bit like many Epica songs (in a different style of course).
I really recommend the song "Esoteric Surgery" for a future Gojira reaction. It comes from the fourth album "The Way of All Flesh", which is in my opinion the best one with the third "From Mars To Sirius".
Anyway, you will only find the studio version of Esoteric Surgery. Joe said that it was too difficult to sing it while playing it live. He said it might happen one day with practice :p

Such a great song! Definitely one of my favs. Btw, once I got into Meshuggah and Gojira, I've found that I can now easily listen to most other stuff out there. Nothing is off limits now and it's amazing

I get what you're saying about them having a unique sound. I listened to To Sirius and The Gift of Guilt, and I was hooked, even though those songs are very different, there's definitely a signature *feel* to them. Also, what you mentioned about Blackwater Park is one of the main reasons I'll just never hold the same love for them as for Gojira. Gojira knows how long a section needs to be and doesn't make it any longer.

Great review once again, Gojira is an awesome band 🤘I would like to see a drum battle beetween Mario Duplantier vs Kai Hahto. Two mindblowing drummers ✊

Je trouve que JO a une belle voix ; MARIO est un grand batteur ; j'aime écouter " BORN IN WINTER" and "silvera" et en live " where dragons dwell " at hellfest 2013 ; ua-cam.com/video/nBLaTY1Rec0/v-deo.html : MARIO in all its glory 😁; love the voice the guitare , bass , and the energy . KISSES from France . Corinne .

All your commentary was spot on except for the accessibility part. I'd argue that Gojira is very accessible- especially their last 2 albums can be a gateway to metal.
You don't like repetitiveness? You should react to "Where Dragons Dwell" live at Hellfest. 5 minutes of the same riff and non-stop double bass. It's awesome! :D

i dont know i feel like unless you are a metal head into extreme metal you might skip this band and even me who does like it has a hard time grasping em.

There are some new talented metal bands in France these years, and not widely known.
You can try Akiavel (The Witness or My Lazy Doll for starting).
Or for something original and highly creative : Igorrr, with the official video of the song IeuD

If you haven't already dived into the discography, I'm absolutely begging you to do a full album reaction to their 3rd LP, "From Mars To Sirius". A majority of Gojira fans agree it's their masterpiece, and it's an intense concept album with fantastic themes and lyrical imagery that really deserves to be digested all at once.
FMTS is one of my all-time favorites of any genre, and I love how deeply you vibe with and grasp their music & how vocal you are with your understanding of it, so it'd be amazing to see your reaction to the whole album. There aren't enough reactors/analyzers like yourself out there who've experienced the whole album as it was meant to be.

It also has some iconic tracks like Flying Whales and The Heaviest Matter Of The Universe; and the song Where Dragons Dwell has a live performance from Hellfest 2013 that's absolutely incredible, but that deserves its own reaction once you're familiar with the original imo.

You’re completely right.. when I fell for this band, I fell all the way. I’ve been listening to them daily for 4 years now. It never gets old.
But I’ve had some friends listen, and I get a ‘meh’ reaction. I don’t get it.. one of the best bands on planet earth.

Wow they really sell it live! Probably better than in the studio. Maybe it's that groove and the opportunity to improvise. They sound very tight here, but at the same time spontaneous. Great reaction!

Old Skule Nerd calls this groove metal( he wasn't the first), the term seems to becoming current. Anyways I think that groove is why the guitars take a back seat to bass and drums, it's about rythem. Jinjer works similarly, though they sound completely different

    • @BaldHeadedMETAL
      @BaldHeadedMETAL  2 роки тому

i can see that comparison but i always saw something like lamb of god, dagoba more of a groove metal. This seems diffrent stylistically but perhaps falls within the same genre. At the end of the day its just good lol

Hell yeah! I end up comparing Gojira to Tool in a lot of ways. A lot of people find similar barriers of entry between the two, but I guess that just comes with the territory of prog metal

    • @juliusmabry4839

also Gojira was my #1 artist this year! Amazonia was my #1 song and two of the deep cuts from L'enfant Sauvage were in my top 3! Pain is a Master and Liquid Fire :D would recommend those over any of the big hits

You said so many interesting things.
I see the drums as the backbone of Gojira and the guitars as the veins and arteries with the vocals as the beleagured soul nestling in there.
The length of their tracks esp. parts of Where Dragons Dwell- the outro- personally seemed long and repetitive even if I loved that particular haunting riff.
But with time Im getting more accustomed to their lengthy moments.
This song is about prayer and evokes that desperation of pleading for someghing from a higher power but not always having your prayers answered- thats how i felt it.
What Im saying is there is maybe a narrative related to decisions to shorten or lengthen a specific part or its repetition.
Fortitude I was a bit disappointed in. It feels commercial. I hope they return to their raw roots for the next one.

    • @BaldHeadedMETAL

i didnt like firtitude for that reason i think i like this more raw sound

Gojira is now in my top bands. No they arent for everyone or easy to get into. It took me awhile. But once you understand what makes them great or their intention behind what they are doing. You realize how fucking SPECIAL they are and how much the metal scene has needed a band like them.
The guitars arent showy, but they are complex in a way we dont often see. It takes alot of skill to base a song around one singular riff and build upon it or mess with it throughout. The Gift of Guilt is an example, one riff throughout but at different points of the song they add to it or change it while keeping it consistent.
Mario is definitely more the lead instrument/the drums.
To me that also makes them unique.
Joe's voice is definitely unique and his power is definitely a standout.

Bro.. everybody in the entire world needs to attain a "metal ear" first off, and second hear every song by this band at least twice. Make yourself no longer unfamiliar with it and it's unpredictable nature
Also, forget about focusing on concepts. Like "critiquing" when you listen to it at least, think about life or vibe to it. Stare out a window etc
Edit: they sound like tool on this album and maybe some other proggy progs they've committed over the years
