Thanks for watching our video regarding how to properly diagnose the cause for the Mercury Oil Tank Sensor 4 beeps every 2 minutes on Mercury Marine 2 Stroke outboard motors. Prior to making this video we searched for related videos and also blogs but did not find anything that correctly diagnoses the problem as we outlined in the video.
Dude the sound effects are freakin creepy. I was waiting on Jason or Chucky to pop out from somewhere! But all that aside, you are the freakin man! A few days ago I ran the oil dry. Finally realized why the engine would not run. Oiled up and the dam alarm would not stop beeping. If not for this video and a magnet I would have gone nuts! Got up early this morning went out to the boat with a magnet 🧲 and WA LA beep was gone! Rubbed that magnet up and down a few times while I ran the motor and the beeping went away. Thank you so much for posting!
I just diagnosed my 2003 240 efi sportjet and have this exact same problem. Thank you again for such a straightforward procedure for diagnosing a grey problem. Ordered my new tank!
+Alan Best Thanks for your feedback. We are glad the videos helps.
Mate, apologies I had a bad day ... I'm not real handy on the tools but your video gave me a starting point to look for and was a great guide, will keep you posted.
+James Young Thanks James I'm hopeful the video will help you. Let us know if you get hung up or have any questions.
good info... but useful voice description would be better than the annoying whaawhaaa audio track....
Great instructions - Thanks! The soundtrack grew on me as I was watching... Perfect white noise.
My dog died shortly after listening.
Omg, the backgrond music, i feel watching horror movie
I came here to say the same thing.
Thank you for the video. Fixed my problem and got me back on the water for a great day fishing :)
This is one of the best troubleshooting videos I have watched on you tube, thanks very much for posting. Have same problem and will troubleshoot this week. Am I correct in assuming the float switch is only for level of oil and not a warning that oil is not pumping?
Thanks for the Help. I had everything right and The e alarm still sounded. I took the cap off so it could prime. slowly it filled up and went off. Now I'm just back in from a 2 hour ride. also might add. Mine is in a Sea Doo Utopia and is inboard. .....same engine
Extremely detailed video
I became ill listening to the music. Always edit video when straight and sober. Also, the oil float sensor failure is such a common Merc. issue, you have to wonder if it is intentional and planned obsolescence. Hmmmmmm
If Magnet turn off beeps am motor is running sweet why bother replace the reservoir? I know bad things can happen just asking. Great video.
THANKS!!
T
Good video. Straight to the point. Thank you
Great info, and I maybe can assume that the previous oil switch that was replaced may have been still a good switch. The new resivoir for my 115 opti is like $350 plus installation....and the switch is epoxied in from the factory..... makes me wonder the same thing that Ron was wondering about built in failures to sell parts. Thank you for your video. I enjoyed your content.
Thanks for the video minus the most annoying background sound
great information, I took off the cover of my 135HP mercury and see slot of oil mix with gas I'm sure is coming out the carburetors is this end ez fix help! and thank you so much for your help
+Jose Robletto Thank You Too!
What will happen if I bypass this oil tank and just connect the two hoses together...I'm asking because my oil tank broke and the oil was pouring all over the place..so can I bypass the oil tank if I have an emergency like that????
Thanks for a great informative video! Do you think installing the Mercury monitor system (the one that has a small display guage) is a worthwhile project for a DIY'er? I have no idea how complex the installation process is. My thought is it'd save some $'s & grief wondering what code is being thrown. I worked for Mercedes Benz & am familiar with over engineered products. Thanks for any help you can offer!
It really depends on exactly which engine model you have. If you have a SmartCraft ready engine there isn't much to hooking things up aside from connecting the harnesses and components.
I prefer the sound of the alarm to that painful music !?!?!?!?!
+James Young Does your computer have mute? The reason I ask is that we get complaints for silent videos as well. Therefore it's easier to mute than add sound. However, I have to ask did you find the video technically helpful?
You don't understand. That beep is the sound of heartbreak.
Thanks for the helpful video. Can anyone describe or post link on how to "Bleed the oil system as instructed in the Mercury Marine service manual"? Is there more to do than what's shown in the video?
Dear Captain stud,
All in all the 115 Opti’s are good motors. I know that some brands of the DFI oil can look a little brown. I hope the previous owner didn’t dump cooking oil in the tank!! If you question the oil, empty it out and put fresh in. It will be cheaper than replacing the powerhead.
Thanks for the video. I had the same issue on my 09 250 ProXS. Exchanged the oil resevoir..and whaalaa!
+Chris Brewton Thanks for the feedback. We're really happy the video was helpful for you.
can someone help
Ok Great Video, I have the 2000 Mercury Optimax 150hp an the dam thing is beeping off the hook, also I think it killing the throttle but can idle. kinda did the same thing on the oil tank on the motor an ill need to do the magnet trick. Please Let me know what else I need to do. Thanks Ron.
Make sure the oil tank on the engine is full before testing. If the “magnet trick” makes the beeping go away…. Send me your serial number for your engine and I will send you a link to order the correct oil tank for it.
@@PerfprotechMarineProducts hello having same issue on my oil resivor. I leave it to the full level once it gets low pass the float it starts to beeb thst it but it not filling back up to it proper level . I'm thinking the oil pump is working cuz it runs low on the resivor but it not staying full
Outstanding Info Thank you
Audio commentary would be infinitely better than horrible sound track. I bypassed the onboard oil tank sensor wiring as a temporary fix, I check the onboard oil reservoir frequently, as the alarm is not functioning until a new unit is installed.
Great video man. I have a question I know these video are couple years back but if anyone can shed some info would really appreciate it. I'm having the issue on the oil resivor going low then the alarm sounds. I tried adding more oil to the resivor but it always runs low agin I'm wondering why doesn't the resivor fill up once it starts to run low I'm new to the boat it a 2001seadoo utopia 185
Question. Recently replaced a oil reservoir in a Mercury XS - it's either a 225 or 250 I think. After replacement of 'new' part, filling with oil, and bleeding - the alarm at the console sounds off after the motor is turned on with flush muff in place. Do you think this will discontinue after placing the boat in the water, warming it up and running it?
3fhobbyist
I would say if your alarm was beeping due to the oil reservoir float being bad, and you replaced it, it should stop beeping once the reservoir is filled to the top. Depending on the year of your motor, you can get a warning of 4 beeps every 2 minutes from other possible causes from the list below.
Low oil - check for low oil level in engine reservoir - (as seen
in this video)
Water in water separating fuel filter - empty contents into
clear container an inspect for water - replace filter
Low battery voltage - check battery connections and battery
condition
Good video! Background music was horrible
I am having this beeping issue on my 2014 Optimax 115. I believe mine is tied to a loose battery cable. I will handle up on it tonight and let everyone know if that corrects it. I never let my oil get low enough for the sensor to be triggered. However it could be a bad float.
Please let us know what you determine.
Where can I buy the wonderful sound track ?
Nice job. Great video.
hi guys great videos. i am thinking of buying a boat with a merc 115hp saltwater series 4 cyl 2st. is there a year model that had more problems than others, what do i need to watchout for that would be specific to this series? TIA
Great background music.
My 115 was beeping due to a bad oil tank. replaced it and I'm back in the water..thanks for posting..
Great!!
Performance Product Technologies I spoke too soon, did you need to re-prime the oil pump? I was told not too and too dump some oil in my tank until the pump starts working. That just doesn't sound right to me. Any help would be appreciated.. thank you..
Yes, you will need to prime the oil pump to ensure there is no air in they system.
Performance Product Technologies opening the bleed screw on the pump and let it bleed until I get the air out will that be good or is there a better way? thanks..
That is good. Be sure to monitor your oil level and make sure it is being consumed.
What if I change the tank and the new one doesn't fill with the cap off?
need help urgent ; i have a mercury 115 optimax there``s a beeping sound it beep 3 times , when accelerate
First thought is that it could be over-revving upon acceleration (like a slipping prop hub). If that isn't it. I would check for loose battery connections, water in the fuel filter or sticky oil sensor float. Having a Mercury service center hook up to the engine with their diagnostic laptop, will tell you exactly what the alarm is for.
Does it take long to bleed the oil out ?
hello I have a 200 efi and I was getting the 4 beeps. after confirming i had a bad magnet/float I replaced the oil tank but it still has the same 4 beeps. the motor runs good but still keeps beeping. any idea what it could be? thanks
mine had this 4 beeps i was on my way back to the shore and for some reason it also stopped me from goin above 1800RPM ... oil tank was full but still got the beeps ...
What about 6 beeps in mercury 60cv 4t efi

Great video! So helpful! What is the part number and where can I purchase just the oil level sensor?? Thanks!
+djschmitt88 What is your engine serial number?
My issues is that the oil reservoir is not filling? If I pour oil directly into the reservoir, the alarm goes away. Any thoughts or recommendations on diagnosing the filling defect?
I having the same issue , have you figured out the solution ?
is there any way you can take a picture of that page in the manual and post it in the comments?
Service Manual Vault
www.servicemanualvault.com
go here... I got a service manual for $5. its 654 pages
Great video. I have an 08 150 EFI. It makes 3 beeps while idling. Usually after first crank in the morning. Any ideas. Thanks. Already replaced thermostats and impeller.
+Tyler T
I’m not seeing anything listed for 3 beeps. I would have a
mercury dealer hook up their diagnostic equipment and see what is causing the
alarm to beep. You might check to make sure the oil tank on the engine is
100% full. If it is a little low it can cause the float to fall and set
the alarm when the engine is trimmed very high or when you first take off.
Alright I'll give that a try. Thank you very much.
You're welcome!
I'm assuming the 150 efi would have the same set-up??
How long does it take to bleed? Just replaced my oil reservoir and ran boat for about 10 minutes but no oil is coming into tank. System was working fine before I changed tank. Thanks!
+Darren Murdock Double check your oil reservoir caps on the oil tank inside the boat and make sure they’re tight. Also, make sure you have the cap off or vented when the engine is running. You might bump the idle up to pressurize the boat oil tank quicker. The bleed process should take about 5 - 8 minutes to fill the tank on the engine.
Well turns out it was my check valve at the crankcase. I just had time this past weekend to work on it again. What are the odds of my magnet falling off in my reservoir tank and my check valve going bad all at one time! Just my luck!! Oh well, got her fixed.
No way, that is really bad luck no doubt. It’s great to hear that you got it fixed however. Let us know if you run up against anything else or have additional questions. We love putting our experience to good use helping boaters do it themselves and do it right.
Performance Product Technologies I'm also getting an alarm. There is a small air bubble at the top of my tank how can i get that to go away and not return
please help i have 250 Evinrude Etec outboardsEngines 2016 model, they are running very well but always after 30 munite the portside engine speed drops and alarm always went on and i use to put the gear in neutral , switch of that engine and wait for one minute and then start the engine again from there there will be no dropping of speed but only sometimes.Reply please.
+Gbl Investment With that amount of information, it could be a number of things. Being that the engine is giving you a buzzer and limiting power; there should be a code stored that should aid in finding the root cause. Get it in to a dealer and have them hook the diagnostics up and troubleshoot from there.
Annoying sound. Good vid.
What’s going on with the music
How can l test a reservoir float on a 200 hp yamaha l think the float is not sending the signal to the computer so the computer is not sending the signal to de oil pump tank to fill the reservoir tank ,when I ground the blue cable coming out of the computer the pump start to fill the reservoir tank anybody can help
I have a 115 that is making the same beeping when I turn the key on. If I unhook the float the beeping goes away. If I check the oil level every fill up why should I buy a new oil tank?
That float and alarm system in the oil tank is nothing more than a reminder to the operator that the oil level is getting low. If your checking the oil level at every fill up then you should never run the engine out of oil. If in the off chance that does happen once and the oil tank goes empty, it will surely cause major damage to the internals of the engine. In both scenarios it is up to the operator to check and fill the oil tank. You have to determine if you want an audible warning to assist you in remembering to check the level, or not.
Because there are cases where the boat oil tank has oil but the engine mounted oil tank runs out.
New video can you can the HOMO music thanks
I need your help. Just bought seadoo jet boat with 2001 mercury 240 EFI. The engine was underwater so I rebuilt it. Starts every time and runs good. No alarms. The problem is when I give it full throttle and get on plane the engine just dies like someone turned the ignition off. No rough running, just quits. I restart it and speed up again and it dies again. I've heard that this is the problem with Some 240 EFI but I can't find a solution. Changed spark plugs, filters and had fresh fuel. Any ideas what the problem could be?
+Jay V We have not heard of that issue specifically however we do not see many Sport Jet products in our market area. Our suggestion would be to get the boat into a dealer or mechanic that has the proper diagnostic equipment to check for any trouble codes.
Performance Product Technologies thank you for responding. If I won't figure out the problem I will take it to a dealer
+Jay V No problem.
Performance Product Technologies problem solved. Replaced inline fuel filter again and runs perfect now
+Jay V Great news!!
w.t.f., i watched another video today where a guy actually shows u how to service the floats and magnets, this is really sad for the money we spend , this must be another part made in china, but, thanks for the video, you are like the 3rd guy to show that even completing mercury test with ohm meter 3 other guys have showed just what u did on diff size outboards, the dame float magnets just dont work. thanks, now go out and giv'er
put new oil tank on same problem now they say new tank is bad has anyone dealt with this before
I’ve never received a ‘bad’ new oil tank. You might confirm through Mercury’s diagnostic software that the alarm is related to the oil tank switch.
The Solution... O sistema funciona com uma boia e um ímã colado na boia e com o tempo o ímã descola da boia e aí o sensor só marca nível baixo de óleo. Solution: colar o ímã que é um anel preto na boia.
Magnets don't send signals, the magnetic field activates a switch.

The sound of the video is disturbing man
Es natural el ten legue del mercurio 2 tienpo
My 40 hp 2012 Mercury is getting 6 beeps
Did you find the problem ?!
Why would you have such stupid music in the background….?
If the engine purchased used
There i a possibility of
Vandalism by previous owner by replacing the magnet with piece of metal or neutralizing the magnet somehow
The music is aggravating.
i hate background music
Get rid of the music
Mr Chucky
soundtrack is super annoying
poor video.narration is absent, and the music ,well what can i say!!!!
Painful music!
kill the music, please
Audio sucks dude
