BMW OIL LEVEL YELLOW OIL WARNING LIGHT ON START UP
A common failure on A BMW is the Oil Level Sensor. This sensor can cause a bunch of odd problems. In this video I will go over some odd failures and the symptoms created from a bad failing oil level sensor and I will show you how easy it is to replace a BMW oil level sensor DIY.
I also try out the vacuum method of keeping the oil in the engine while you replace or swap out the oil level sensor.

Never in a million years would I have thought of that vacuum trick to save the oil.
I have to do this same job on my wife's '02 Z3 MCoupe. Even though the vacuum trick is tempting I'll just wait for the next oil change to do it.
It was fun to try the vacuum trick and share the results. I think it's smart to plan this replacement with your next oil change 😀
solid quality video!! Very informative and to the point
Thanks Johnny!
@@AskTheCarExperts whoops looks like I saw that wrong. It was a new video my apologies. I was genuinely shocked that a video with so many views had no interaction (my UA-cam glitched view count). Great video brother. Happy thanksgiving!!!!
@@johnnystock7294 Thanks bud! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
useful video, thanks bro
You are welcome!
***super duper Pro-Tip***
Those plastic splash shields’ “edges” should be “tucked-in” in the stiffening plate’ edges. And not covering the edges of the metal plate. You should be able to take out that metal plate w/o taking the plastic shields. right?
I love that vacuum trick! So cool. I like the oil funnel also.
You’re awesome man. You just earned another Bimmer super duper pro to subscribe.
Hey bud! Thanks for subscribing! You are right that the plastic shield is tucked around the stiffening plate and it does come off without having to take the metal plate off. The vacuum trick is just fun to do LOL :)
@@AskTheCarExperts thanks man. I appreciate the tips and tricks. So cool.
Bravo, Roger!
Cool trick with the shop vac. Whodda thunk??
BTW your wife called...she wants to know if I want your T-shirt! 😝Literally, the one you're wearing. D'oh!
I think it's in the mail already! 🤔 🤣
Great Video. My only question is why does the car have an oil level sensor and a dip stick? (I own a 2011 BMW X3 F25) With your very helpful video I now able to proceed and change my oil level sensor.
Thank you. The oil level sensor is also an oil condition sensor and it helps determine oil condition for condition based service interval.
Thankful
Your welcome Syed
Nice video, Tom Cruise. Still not sure if its the same person. Never use the word finagle like the old days.
LOL
So any oil on the gasket like we do for oil filter? Thanks cool video my sensor gasket is leaking ..it works so just a new gasket
You can just get away with a new gasket if the sensor is good.
Great vid but I’m curious I have a 2010 e90 4 cylinder engine that I recently serviced I put 6 quarts with 1 marvel mystery oil thinking I’ve over filled it but the gauge stays on about 75 percent no matter how much I added could this be a bad oil sensor it never says low or inactive or triggers oil light but I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to use 4.5 quart how is it at about 7 and still on 75 percent
Sounds like the sensor. You will want to drain and measure the correct level. I have seen 4 cylinders with 10 qts. They smoke a lot!
@@AskTheCarExpertsthanks for the fast reply but I read in the manual that if the sensor was bad or needed to be replaced that it would say inactive isn’t that the case or not all of the time?
It can also read inaccurately. You would not get errors because the system is sending a false reading.
@@AskTheCarExperts ok thanks for the clarification
9nm for those sensor to sump bolts
Thanks for sharing the spec
Do you need to deal with the codes afterwards or no need to ?
Always a good idea to clear codes. Test drive and then rescan.
My oil level won’t give me a reading on the dash.. any idea.. I have a 2008 x3 6cyl… when I do oil check it just keeps recycling… I make sure my car is running while doing oil check
Hello Miles, If it times out when doing the oil level check. This is usually due to fluctuations in the oil pressure. It can be from a failing oil control valve but I have also had it be from a failing oil pump.
Not what I wanted to hear however thank. I guess it can’t be a bmw if it doesn’t have any gremlins.
I was able to get it to show oils level. By resetting all re-learns.
Goodin tight 😊
My favorite torque spec
Nice but was there oil in your shop vac.. I wld think it wlda suckd oil into it lol
Hello, I had checked and no oil in the vacuum because it really is just creating a vacuum and sucking air.
Oil level show inactive on my car
Hello, I have seen this on a few BMW's. If it starts to read and then stops then this may be an oil pump issue. If it reads inactive all the time then diagnosis of the oil level sensor is needed.
@@AskTheCarExperts in my case the sensor I got it from FCP wasn't working and I got the message. When I installed back the original one that previously was removed from my car the message disappeared.
