I just purchased a stainless steel airfryer, but I’m really gonna miss my old one. I love it! I did it because I discovered that the Teflon ones are toxic. They have PFAs, PFOAS and PTFEs.
I don’t think the air fryer per se is the dangerous part. But I would be a little concerned with this non-stick accessories, that come with the air fryer, when those accessories begin to break down (because they are probably made of some Teflon-type materials…not sure if it is Teflon exactly I think they started trying to phase out that dangerous material, but I think the material that is non-stick in general isn’t best/safest for you to use… so when it begins to chip, still beware) … but I use paper and silicone liners with the appliance to decrease the chance that any non-stick paints will break off and leach into the food. If you want an interesting and entertaining, close enough, depiction of what exactly happened with Teflon years ago, go watch the movie Dark Waters. It was very good and close enough. I would say that those materials are still used today, and people are unaware they only cook safely until the material begins to chip and scratch, when that occurs it is time to throw it out and replace.
The movie is about Teflon manufacturing though, specifically PFOA. Finished Teflon as you'd have in an air fryer is inert and according to (among many!) the US FDA, Teflon chips are not dangerous to accidentally consume. PFOA is also not allowed to be used in manufacture today.
I recommend everyone gets a air fryer oven and make some space for it on your counter top. I have an iconites air fryer oven from Amazon and I love it. I've been using it for about two years and it's always worked great.
I only think about such health worries if the fryer smokes and gunks up. A clean air fryer is smokeless and gunk free. NEVER SPRAY OR APPLY OIL TO AN ALREADY HOT AIR FRYER BASKET AND CATCH BASIN and you get no tarry gunk build up. Apply super thin layer of oil to the cold surfaces and it will form a second no stick hard enamel seasoning that repels tar and gunk. Less scrubbing, less scouring, less ware on your no stick surface. Easy soft sponge and hot dish water rub off. Occassional deep cleaning involves 1 hour soaking in hot dish water with baking soda to increase caustic grease breakdown
@@back2the80s Ironically, that is what my Ninja Foodee instructions recommend and I have followed many hundreds of times. No degradation to the ceramic no stick surface. Teflon is quite inferior to high grade ceramic.
good remark. i have been screaming head and tail about the scare article. but in all honesty, acrylamide isnt ONLY produced through air fryer. technically, any means of cooking the starchy food. as long as u REACHED the reaction temperature, the same food will turn into acrylamide anyway. In short, what type of appliances is quite irrelevant. Acrylamide production is defined by the Food you cook. and the temperature you cook at. Not the APPPLIANCES you decided to use. this is important such that u know, regardless if you Oven bake your fries, Deep fry, BBQ the Fries/ Potato, when it reaches the SAME reaction temperature, It WILL produce Acrylamide. this is why the targetting focus of Just air fryers are absurd. you might as well just put the original article as 'any means of cooking any potato/ french fries and starchy food at XXX Celcius will give u acrylamide' this sentence is far more accurate than the focus associating it with ONLY Air fryers. Hope my description clears the air for the rest of the world. And personally, i think whoever that perpetuated this 'study' on the 'dangers' by putting into the picture with 'air fryers' must have been the competitors of air fryers (Conventional Pot & Pans and cooking oil producers ) HAHAHA
Thank you! This answered my questions fully along with this video. I thought baking in the oven would be fine, but realized it's just all about temperature.
People, do you see how he cited scholarly articles in support of his claims? This is how you know he's making a legitimate claim! He's not quoting someone who quoted someone who saw a stupid video that was on social media! Good job! Really appreciate the information on air fryers!
Thank you. This is exactly the straight forward information I was searching for. (as compared to ads from manufacturers) Now I'm off to see the rest of your vids. Best.
Hi. I was wondering - does the non-stick give off a lot of forever chemicals - especially with all that hot air circulating around - wondering whether to buy or not?
So in regards to Acrylamide a key thing you missed in your video, to minimize the amount of Acrylamide in your food when doing virtually ANY air-frying, portion control is one factor but the other factor is HOW MUCH TIME IS COOKED, what type of food is used and food preparation. For example, if you prepare your potato's and soak them in water long enough and then you do an Air-fry, you reduce the amount Acrylamide. In addition, if you cook your fries in 180 instead of 200+ and then you cook it one more time at 160, to get the crisp, you already reduced the amount of Acrylamide in half.
He did say that. He said "the longer the food is cooked" it's common sense not to overly cook the food if prolonged cook times result in higher acrylamide...
@@samaraisnt it still does not change the fact of misinformation in regards to my criticism. The moment people start talking anything in regard to the overall well being health of someone and do not include factual science but "exp" is something the person on the other line who preaches that needs to realize that what they say will be held accountable.
So basically acrylamide come from overcooked food: food turning brown or worse, black! But what's funny is we can get those brown or blackened food not only from air fryer but also other means of cooking. Even overly done bbq food can have those blackish substance on your foods. So that's why it is very unfair to say that air fryer produces cancer-inducing substance when any way of cooking can cause such chemical to be produced. So it's important to get our facts straight. Thanks for your informative video.
As a Moroccan , that black trademark is ALWAYS in tajine bottom , i always say to mom if microwaves causes cancer then asia is going to be the heart of it .
As with all foods and dietary related things… too much is not good. Eat in moderation everyone, it goes a long way! Learn to calculate what you need and consume based on your BMI, there are alot of apps and websites to help you. And find out what dirty dozen foods are, you will be surprised! And cook at home instead of eating foods from outside as much as possible, so you can know and control what u eat.
Thanks Dr. Leonard! What worries me is that most have teflon and that kills birds when it gets too hot. I have a large parrot and have not been able to find one that does not have teflon.
Suggestion: there are many videos out there where is teaching you how to cook fries from normal potatoes which everyone have in their cupboard, so cook stuff as much natural as you can ❤ , also there are like paper trays to put at the bottom of the air frier tray so your food won't touch the non stick coat if you are afraid of that
My question is about the material the surface is made of where the food cooks. I don’t use nonstick pans. I know a lot has changed about Teflon and similar surfaces. But I didn’t think about it until I got mine. I haven’t used it yet. I have been wondering if I want to send it back and get an air fryer oven that is made from stainless steel. It’s a little more but wondered if I would be happier
Thank you for this short yet info packed video! i got really scared when i saw this guy on tiktok being very aggressive with his info and stands on using air fryers and i reaaaally didnt wanna throw mine out ! XD
Any starch based food or even coffee contain Acrylamide. Other things we do daily have higher chance of death anyway. Air fryer has been an absolute godsend for me! It’s not the air fryer, it’s how we cook!
Frozen fries are pre-fried. I'm 100% sure there's going to be a strong build-up of all sorts of stuff in the factory along with acrylamide, they'd be recycling the oil of course. The pre-frying is also what helps in getting the extra crispiness, but it can be mimicked at home by double frying.
starch in food such as potatoes is what causes the Acrylamide if you are making your french fries from your own potatoes, peel, cut then soak in water to get excess starch out then dry well on paper or linen kitchen towel before air frying to get rid of excess water that cuts down on Acrylamide it is something present in starchy food also cook a lower temp and don't over cook
Thank you so much I’ve just been in remission from cancer for just over a year and I just starting using my air frier just last month 💜 So this Scared the s@&t out of me
Let's talk about the refined sugar they put in our proccessed foods--makes us sick and diabetic. GMO foods causing cancer. Our medications cause cancer. I just found out mine does. Do we really think we can avoid it?
How do I remove acrylamide from my body? Drinking more water, a lot more water for some of us, will probably be the most important thing you can do to get rid of Acrylamide. However, make sure you are drinking pure water; otherwise you may inadvertently increase your exposure. Taking herbs to improve kidney and liver detoxification may be helpful.
What about far infrared radiation from some of the air fryers ? Some of them use this form of heat and its toxic af. Also the Plastic coatings on some of the inside of the air fryers cause massive hormone problems . What are your thoughts on this ? i am doing research because my mother wants one and i keep telling her to just cook the veggies in the oven.
Airfryers are the new convection ovens or the bulky turbo broilers in the 90s. If you're scared of the all metal air fryer then just get the convection type from the 90s with the glass body and stainless steel grill. It uses the same hot air circulating in an enclosed area.
@@zoenoore840 none. We just use the generic ones. My relatives even have one that has been around for 20yrs. They are just too bulky and heavy though because of the glass but maybe they have ones now that are smaller in diameter. Because the old one were usually made for turkey
I’m more concerned about the absolutely toxic smell my air fryer puts off and imbues into the food. Tried burning off the smell many times as it’s supposedly common for new air fryers to smell toxic (not a great sign but ok) but the smell is still there. Not nearly as strong as it was when new but enough to make me feel uncomfortable eating the food.
Something must be wrong with your airfryer. Or you maybe had something plastic that burned up in it or something. All families in my generation use air fryers. Mom. Brothers family, sisters family, cousin aunties. Everyone. And we all adore our airfryers and have never ever had or even heard of the issue you have mentioned.

I have been researching for a while and found that the Ninja af101 does not contain PFOA PTFE or BPA and it has a ceramic coating inside. And the one I have now is PowerXL vortex model. 7qt( 7 quarts is the size) But I've honestly never experienced the burning plastic smell or flavor that's been mentioned here in this page. And I've used at least 5 different models over the last 6or so years. And actually if you don't wanna invest a bunch of money and just dip a toe into airfrying. $70 at WallMart. For the 5qt size. Or preferably. A little more for the 7qt size Will be a good idea. And they have a 3month return policy. If you find it too small. You can take it back.
@@daisyblue7209 the smell or taste I'm kinda thinking people are getting. May be from. Something they have burned on the heating element. There is like a electric stove eye. Above where the basket goes in. And if there was a microwave safe bowl or something in there that touched or was too close to it. I reckon that could leave a lingering effect. And also it needs a clear air flow around it. So if it's in a cluttered space. Something could had sucked into it and be burning in the element causing a issue. But really. No one I know has ever mentioned such issue. So Im thinking those whom have had such issue. Had one of the aforementioned issues. And so like I mentioned. Can't beat Walmarts 90 day return policy. @CampingforCool41 Where did you get the idea it's normal for air fryers to smell bad? Something is wrong and i would stop using that item? Did you put anything in it that wasn't food at some point?
I have a PowerAirFryerXL. I recently noticed the copper-colored coating on the basket has been flaking or peeling off and sticking to the food. Do you know if there are any health risks associated with consuming this coating? I'm not even sure what the coating is.
That is the nonstick coating coming off. Toss it out and get a new one. The nonstick coating is toxic if you consume enough of it. It is okay for cooking things under 300 degrees Farenhightth...if it flakes...throw it as far as you can.
Here I thought he was about to start hating on my air fryer. 😆 I am glad I watched the video thank you very informative. My air fryer has made my life so much easier when it comes to cooking.
This is a great video for people who don't really want to stop eating certain foods. For me, it's simple. Stay away from it. There are other ways to eat.
Im good on air frying. I will continue to fry in my virgin unrefined coconut oil. It’s just like when microwaves came out, now come to find out those are unhealthy too.
Didn’t they say that about microwaves, hotdogs, pretzels, yet I’ve never hear of anyone dying from cancer being caused by these products decades later. If you listened to everything society puts out, we’d all be on tube feeding
Well no technically things like hot dogs do cause cancer but if you aren't eating 500 a year it wouldn't directly kill you, they can verify it by pumping 100x the normal dose into a rat to induce death and show that there is a certain amt of cancer causing agent....If you find someone who eats hot dogs like people smoke cigarettes, you'd have a lot more people dying of cancer from that. (Still not as much as smoking as nothing is as hazardous to our health as smoking is).
It’s important not to cook to hot. It ok to cook at a lower temperature it still saves time because it’s a small area and it’s at temperature quicker than an oven
Only when you eat char bits, or burnt fries, carbo, if u freeze rice or potatoes, it increases Acrylamide content as well. Keep below 180DegC... But think about it, I know people who avoid high fats food but smoke 2 packs cigarettes aday.... Good factual demo !.
Nice vid! How about TMAOs found when cooking meats at high temperatures, as in grilling, and also linked to cancer? Any concern about them when using an air fryer?
It's a product of intense heating of starches. You won't produce acrylamide cooking beef in the air fryer. Furthermore, acrylamide is likely already present in freezer fries before cooking.
What about the plastic tray of the air fryer on which food is placed for frying? Wouldn't that plastic secrete chemicals when heated to high temperatures?
Generally speaking, those plastics are specially designed to withstand such temperatures, and are normally for the outer layers only, in between other materials or insulators. This is where the old adage, of trusting reliable brands comes in handy. Hope this helps!
Not only does air frying still run the risk of creating acrylamides, but polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines can result from all high-heat cooking with meat.
Just don't cook at higher than 350° in any form of cooking to keep carcinogens found in food to a minimum. I just received an air fryer oven as a gift, and it allows me to choose the cooking temperature. From what I have seen on the internet, dedicated air fryers do the same thing.
I read that the non stick coating in air fryers contain polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and like no stick pans, the PFAs can get into your food if the coating on the air fryer gets scratched or damaged. Would using air fryer liners help prevent this?
What about presto halogen low fat air fryer? I’m worried the light is damaging to the eyes after reading a review about it on Amazon. The lid is made of see through glass so the light is really bright and shines. I cover it with a tea towel just to be safe
It's a tricky question, while higher temperatures can be bad from a health POV, if the overall cooking time is short it can actually be better. For example, 180 d C at 20 minutes may be worse that 200 d C at 6 minutes, from an acrylamide POV. personally, go high and fast if you can, or go super low and slow.
I was more worried about the Teflon that some of these Air Fryers have inside to make your cleaning easier. My air fryer is all stainless steel, more difficult to clean, but I rather take 2 or 3 minutes more to clean it.
I just got an instant pot duo crisp and the main pot is stainless steel, it's got a non-stick air fryer pot but you can use the stainless steel pot to air fry instead
@@tania354 Hi, I’m also interested in getting air fryer lid for my 6 qt Ip that I have. Did you mean that you can air fry in the stainless steel pot that comes with IP? Which one did you get?
Which one?
Yess! It's so versatile.
I love my air fryer oven 🤤
Soaking ruins surface
Perfectly said. Any time you fry a starchy food using any machine, it can cause acrylamide, which may or may not be bad.
What about the teflon danger?
Thank you! This answered my questions fully along with this video. I thought baking in the oven would be fine, but realized it's just all about temperature.
Acrylamide was found to be way higher in airfried food than in deep fried.
@@takeiteasymommy8697 there is also acrylamide in cofee or cookies... Etc...
People, do you see how he cited scholarly articles in support of his claims? This is how you know he's making a legitimate claim! He's not quoting someone who quoted someone who saw a stupid video that was on social media! Good job! Really appreciate the information on air fryers!
Great common sense advice.....driving your car is 10000x more dangerous than air frying.
Same
Use air fryer parchment liners. And it also keeps ur air fryer clean
Very well said Jannah. I was thinking the exact same thing
So your telling me i shouldnt eat anything? So i can die of starvation ?
"You also, have an air fryer just like this."
Me while holding pan: yes indeed
You had me concerned with the title! Glad I watched it all the way through. Thanks for the info and background detail regarding those studies.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Dr. Leonard! What worries me is that most have teflon and that kills birds when it gets too hot. I have a large parrot and have not been able to find one that does not have teflon.
Don’t try and cook ur parrot?????
@@sbuyea407 🤣🤣🤣
You dont need the air fryer , its for lazy people
Boiling will ensure there is no acrylamide. Baking may cause a small amount depending how over done you cook. Air frying is in the same category
The teflon material is perfectly fine to use; unless you purposely scratch the coating out when cooking; it's harm is very minimal at best.
Get a glass convection oven.
My mother is 83 years old who love her foods brown all the time or crispy all her life and she still healthy .

Can't agree more. Thank youuu 🙏🙏❤️
Good info...just get the fryer with stainless steel inside components instead of the toxic non-stick coating.
Any starch based food or even coffee contain Acrylamide. Other things we do daily have higher chance of death anyway. Air fryer has been an absolute godsend for me! It’s not the air fryer, it’s how we cook!
Oh wow I just bought an air fryer! Nice content.
Its a heating element with a fan lol, insane that people think it can give u cancer...
starch in food such as potatoes is what causes the Acrylamide if you are making your french fries from your own potatoes, peel, cut then soak in water to get excess starch out then dry well on paper or linen kitchen towel before air frying to get rid of excess water that cuts down on Acrylamide it is something present in starchy food also cook a lower temp and don't over cook

I wish I had Air Fryer in college in the 90s. I finally got one today and just cooked chicken wings. Amazing.
Kudos to you, very easy & Convenient isn't it..
Any cancer yet?
How do I remove acrylamide from my body?
Drinking more water, a lot more water for some of us, will probably be the most important thing you can do to get rid of Acrylamide. However, make sure you are drinking pure water; otherwise you may inadvertently increase your exposure. Taking herbs to improve kidney and liver detoxification may be helpful.
The cooking oil producer afraid already, they are losing the market
What about Teflon? Should we buy ceramic air fryers to protect ourselves?
absolutely
@@kimyah do you have a brand you suggest?
@@zoenoore840 none. We just use the generic ones. My relatives even have one that has been around for 20yrs. They are just too bulky and heavy though because of the glass but maybe they have ones now that are smaller in diameter. Because the old one were usually made for turkey

Just breathing the air nowadays is Cancerous, what can we do but do our best to use common sense and find balance xx
At this point, I’m over it! Everything is an issue!
@@Smith1980 hi, could you tell me what brand of air fryer that you or your family use? I'm considering buying my first air fryer and the reviews that I have read on most of them are people complaining about a burning plastic smell and that's one of the things that's been holding me back on buying one. I have been researching for a while and found that the Ninja af101 does not contain PFOA PTFE or BPA and it has a ceramic coating inside. But there is still quite a bit of reviews saying that it has a burning chemical smell. But most of the reviews on that same model say they don't have any kind of smell at all with theirs.Strange.
@@daisyblue7209 hiya I will ask my mom the about what brand she uses at her home. She uses the really nice stuff. But I'm admittedly broke. And I use what may be considered a cheapo brand. My last two being of the PowerXL brand. From WallMart. Like $70 bucks. The one I had like two years ago was stolen. In a home burglary.
I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide. And I'm very confident you will be pleased. As everyone I know has been so far that uses them
@CampingforCool41 Where did you get the idea it's normal for air fryers to smell bad? Something is wrong and i would stop using that item? Did you put anything in it that wasn't food at some point?
What about finding one that BPA free? Does it matter? Some dont list air fryer to be BP free.
My air fryer is going in the trash because it has a strong plastic odor.
Line the bottom with perforated parchment paper.
Good explanation. well done. Thanks Leonaard.
Don't throw out your air fryer, just because of the provocative headline.
Here I thought he was about to start hating on my air fryer. 😆 I am glad I watched the video thank you very informative. My air fryer has made my life so much easier when it comes to cooking.
So the issue isnt with the air fryer itself. Its with the browning (over browning) of starchy foods. And we could get it from any cooking method.
I was scared at first to watch this because i just got an Air fryer for Christmas and i was like Noooooo😱. But now i feel better! Thanks!🥰
Luckyly u to watching this
Didn’t they say that about microwaves, hotdogs, pretzels, yet I’ve never hear of anyone dying from cancer being caused by these products decades later. If you listened to everything society puts out, we’d all be on tube feeding
And im sure no one has died of cancer since microwaves were invented😅👌
Thank you for calming my wife down while I was cooking
What about the plastic tray of the air fryer on which food is placed for frying? Wouldn't that plastic secrete chemicals when heated to high temperatures?
Generally speaking, those plastics are specially designed to withstand such temperatures, and are normally for the outer layers only, in between other materials or insulators. This is where the old adage, of trusting reliable brands comes in handy. Hope this helps!
ua-cam.com/video/tqcuskaReug/v-deo.html
Not only does air frying still run the risk of creating acrylamides, but polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines can result from all high-heat cooking with meat.
Those studies regarding those are also bullshit. Mice given 10,000-100,000 the doses humans are exposed to. Dyor
This is why I still have not used one yet.
Just don't cook at higher than 350° in any form of cooking to keep carcinogens found in food to a minimum. I just received an air fryer oven as a gift, and it allows me to choose the cooking temperature. From what I have seen on the internet, dedicated air fryers do the same thing.
What about the Teflon coating
Well, the FDA says acrylamide is from a combination of sugars and the amino acid asparagine cooking at high temps.
The thing is no matter how I rinse it with clean water, still smells like dishwasher after the next use...please advise.
Well I use much lower temperatures I understand 400 is not good for anything. I also don’t use these more than once every other week.
Isn't an Airfryer just a hot coil with a fan circulating the heat?
So if we cook food in air fryer at low temperatures and lesser time or in intervals so it could reduce the risk of acrylamide formation?
Watching this while I'm eating air fried food...
Hi Leonard, a little peering is coming off the fryer is it still safe to use?
Hey, yeah it's generally fine.
Informative and balanced report 🙏 thank you!
What about the teflon danger??
May I know what is the max temp we should set to be safe. Besides if we use oven at 180C, will it be bad for health?
It's a tricky question, while higher temperatures can be bad from a health POV, if the overall cooking time is short it can actually be better.
For example, 180 d C at 20 minutes may be worse that 200 d C at 6 minutes, from an acrylamide POV.
personally, go high and fast if you can, or go super low and slow.
