Greatest Running Back Ever and one of the greatest football players ever. Period end of Story. Side note: My dad got me one of Walter's early trading cards at a sports collectibles store outside Chicago. I think the card was from one of his Pro Bowl years. This was about 20 years ago. I was a little kid back then (obviously I wasn't alive when Walter played). I looked up how much the card is worth today and it's 500 bucks (my dad bought it for me for I think it was like 20 or something). I am definitely keeping that card. Rest in Peace, Sweetness. We still miss you. We'll always miss you. 🐻🏈

Best blocking HB all-time. He sawed defenders in half with his blocks. Walter was the Bears top receiver early in his career. He legitimately could play QB. Always delivered the hit. Played 13 seasons. Only missed one game, his rookie season. He wasn't injured, the coach held him out for no reason. His first three seasons were 14 game seasons. The 1982 strike shortened season cost him seven games. He graciously accepted a reduced role his last season to make room for Neal Anderson. Add it all up he lost approximately 16 games. If you add in these games he easily would've had 18,000 rushing yards. And Walter accomplished this on teams that were FAR FAR worse, on offense, than Barry Sanders' Lions, when you compare their first eight seasons. The Bears playbook early on, the joke went, was Payton left, Payton right, Payton middle. Imagine if Walter had Emmitt's O-line and offense? He'd probably would have rushed for 20,000 yards and received for 6,000. The Bears were bad and Walter could've called it quits after 9 seasons and retired. But he pushed through and got his Super Bowl ring.
Under no circumstances would Walter have retired after his 9th season, 1983. He was very close to Brown's record going into 1984, and was still playing All-Pro.

The greatest football player of all time. I’m not talking Quarterback, I’m not talking Wide Receiver, I’m not talking Tight End, and I’m not even just talking about Running Back. Honestly the best highlight reel I've ever seen of Sweetness. Thanks NFL Throwback (@NFLVault)!I was born in the 80s and missed all but the tail end of his career.
W.P. is one of the greatest. You can't ask for more. The heart and the tenacity. And he didn't play for my team. He was just a phenomenal football player.
Walter...on behalf of MILLIONS of your fans...you were and are the best IN HISTORY!! We were all w you on that Super Bowl Sunday...we ALL wish you had scored a td...BUT... what still remains, almost 40 years later, is that you were the best!!! PERIOD!! Rest in peace my friend...you ARE & will ALWAYSI be missed!! You Are Sweetness!!
I AM 65 YEARS. I HAVE BEEN A FOOTBALL FAN FOR 60 YEARS. I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF RUNNERS COMING OUT OF THE BACKFIELD I HAVE ONE WORD FOR YOU. WALTER PEYTON
walt could do everything .... he could freaking kick, pass, block, run, catch, return kicks, play qb, he just destroyed DBs too... man walter was the most complete player of all time
I am a Packer fan but in those days all that was in my local market was the Bears, I loved these games and actually started rooting for the Bears because of the greatest running back of all time, the late, great Walter Payton. He could do it all and even played quarterback and threw some TD's. His strait arm was the best ever and he was fast, could break almost any tackles and was strong and brave. The all time best player in NFL history, or at least in the top 3.
The best football player I EVER saw. He was a do everything/anything player. He had the greatest combination of skills and running ability I ever saw. Most halfbacks are speed and juke guys like Sanders, Sayers, Dorsett and Faulk. Other guys are powerbacks like Brown, Campbell, Riggins and Alstott. Payton had juke AND could run you over and he did that at only 205lbs missing one game in 13 seasons. 🐐
Walter Payton was a football player. The football player. In all my years i have never seen a football player like Walter. He is indeed the greatest of all time. I do believe we will never ever see another like him.
You'll get some people who'll say that Barry Sanders was the best pure runner of all time, and he was indeed great... but Walter Payton was not only right there with him, he was the most-complete football player in the history of the NFL ~ with one or two possible exceptions. There was nothing on a football field he couldn't do, offense, defense, running, blocking, tackling, receiving, throwing, kicking, punting - he could do it all, and at an elite level. If you could've fielded a team made of up carbon copies of him, they'd have been darned near invincible.
Born 1980 north of Pittsburgh, I still remember watching Walter Payton as a kid in the 80s on ESPN highlights or nationally televised games. Steelers my team as Vikings also in 87. Anthony Carter became my idol (besides my dad). I followed the highlights, stats in the paper, football cards and knew how great Mr. Walter Payton was. Gave my Vikings a run for their money. It was crazy back then being a fan of a team out of town. Only see them if nationally televised and espn highlights for a minute or two.
Without a doubt THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!! No one can or ever will compare to Walter Payton. Like the man said, “When God created a football player he made Walter Payton.” He was powerful, he was quick, he was tenacious, he was determined, he was classy (on and off the field), and he always honored the game of football like a true professional. That’s what made Walter so special. He is truly missed. Rest easy “Sweetness”.🏈
He was so good at breaking tackles, nice combination of physicality with elusiveness. What a special player sweetness was. My favorite play was the run he did against the Saints in his rookie year. R.I.P. Mr. Payton
Born in Chicago. Life long Bears fan. Watching Walter taught me about heart, will, determination, and sportsmanship. He was my hero growing up. Everyone loves to argue about who the best running back is, but it’s more than just running the ball. When you factor in blocking, passing, and receiving it’s clear that Walter Payton is the best offensive football player in the history of the NFL.
I was born in central IL and grew up watching 34. I couldn't agree more about the lessons learned from watching him. His teachings have served me well in life.
Jim Brown's all-time rushing record I saw him break that and that was a lot of fun but an earlier call her or an earlier thing said Walter Payton left Walter Payton right and Walter Payton up the middle it was like that for many many years that's all they would do is come in and try to stop painting and they couldn't do it he was the only offensive threat we had to Willie golf came along and Dennis McKinnon and Jim McMahon then there was no doubt about it we were going to get a win somewhere in the super bowl it's a shame that team didn't stay together and went three or four more or a couple more at least because they were dominant in 85 they lost to a rookie Dan Marino I don't know what happened that day but every other day they were down there I believe that Eric Dickerson had negative yardage in the NFC championship game against him and after we won that championship game we went on to beat the Patriots 46 to 10 in the super bowl prior to that with both shutouts the Giants and then the Rams and then beat the crap out of the Patriots that was the MVP of that game and Walter didn't score a touchdown because of the guy by the name of William Perry which is a shame but this girl was a better man and put two grand on the 25 to 1 odds at William Perry would score a touchdown in the super so he was a big winner that day but Peyton didn't score and that's a shame Jim McMahon said he would have given the painting the ball if he didn't think Payton would still score again later in the game
There's only one Walter Payton like he was the G.O.A.T the 1st Round 4th overall pick out of historic black college university in Jackson State University what a larger then life athlete who's the heart and soul of the Chicago Bears R.I.P Sweetness
FINALLY!!!! Thank you, NFL Films for releasing some full speed footage of Walter. All those old slow motion highlights don't do him justice. He gets called "slow". He was not slow he was very explosive, and this footage finally shows that to the younger generation.
I don't see how Walter isn't rated #1. He WAS the most complete football player I have ever seen. As far as being a man goes, he was also the epitome of a class act. A fun-loving prankster, his teammates and coaches all loved him. Speaking of teammates, Jim McMahon, probably the most underrated QB of all time, threw a lot of aggressive blocks for Walter and other teammates -- not your typical QB. If he had been on a passing team, he probably would have rewritten the NFL record books (as he did in the NCAA), even though all he cared about was winning (like Walter). I thank my lucky stars for having been a Bears fan for all the years these guys played. Super talented and dedicated players who did everything they did for the love of the game. Those were the days...
Been in a downward spiral for too long a time and happened to come across Mister Payton's highlight reel and it was inspiring. Having been born and raised in Chi Town and privileged being an age to watch Mr P at his finest reminded me I not only can but HAVE TO get my shit together. I say thank you for the memories and the message to play hard, play to win cause life is a game and I was born a winner. (Insert mike drop now )now
My favorite player at that time, and so profound was his impact that he is still my favorite. The guy I wanted to be when I played tailback. His skills and his character-the elegance and dignity with which he played, just beautiful.
First off thank you so much. I’ve been waiting for this since you all started putting out videos ❤ But as they say… save the best-or the SWEETNESS-for last. Secondly, Sweetness is the toughest son of a gun to ever play this game. He was built like a tank and ran like one.
I'm 56...and some of my most favorite & memorable times were Thanksgiving Day....Bears & Lions, Bears & Packers, Bears & Dallas, Bears & Minn....you get the picture....CLASSICS....Walter, thankyou. Love you, miss you...RIP
Superb way to end this amazing video with the great Emmitt Smith saying “ His name is at the top of the list…..TRUST ME … TRUST ME HIS NAME IS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST!!!!” 🔥🔥 Absolute Chills they don’t make ‘em like that no more.
I don't care what anyone says, as far as I'm concerned, Walter Payton is the greatest RB of all-time & he might just be the greatest football player of all-time, as well!! 😤💯💙🧡🐻⬇️
You never know what you got til it’s gone. We knew they were great, but it still seems we undervalued just how great. I grew up in that dump called chicago and we were gifted Walter, Gayle Sayers, and a home grown Dick Butkus. Between the music of the time (especially compared to now) and those guys, I was such a lucky bastard to grow up during that time. As an extra added bonus, I never saw any of those guys do any GD dance after a TD or tackle. I think it was Walter who said “When you score, act like you’ve been there before”.
gayle sayers was the first phenom running back of the era. well, it turned out he was the greatest, and to have Payton succeed him ... possibly the two greatest running backs of all-time. really !
I’m old enough to have witnessed some of the greatest running backs play the game, Brown, Simpson, Dickerson, and Walter Payton is at the top of the list, truly my favorite football player of all time, Walter was a wonderful role model on and off the field, thank you Walter Payton for blessing us with your greatness…I’m not ashamed to say I cried when I heard we lost him 🙏🏾🕊️
When I was in junior high school, I had read a article in Sports Illustrated magazine on Walter Payton when he just came into the NFL and they had put some of the feast he was able to perform in the weight room and on the field just a physical specimen at such a young age and what a great running back....... the greatest ever and when you look at it he really only had maybe two to three good years his entire career, pre the 85 Bears the man pretty much did it all on his own, and the article, and the article it read that he could at 5"10 185lbs bench over 400lbs....walk the entire football field on his hands, flat footed throw a football 90 yards....not to mention what we all seen him do on the field as a player...he used to say if a defender would come ar him,he wanted to deliver the hit, not be hit and you'll see in some of hus highlights where he does just that....and never ever did I see watching him, anyone ever push, shove or take a cheap shot at him or get up in his face and talk smack......his legacy on the field was hus legendary play, heart ,will and team player ,and for that the Walter Payton award was created.....his legacy off the field was his children and their attitude towards life and society is a direct reflection of him...."sweetness" the greatest running back ever in my words...I wasn't able to watch Brown play...only in highlights.
His life keeps going! I watch all of his highlights! I’m to young to actually to have watched him played, but my parents always talk about him! He’s a beast!
I know this comment won't mean much but Walter Payton has been my favorite player since I was 7 years old and he passed away literally one day before I was born 11/04/1999 And with that I try and be as mentally tough as he was Walter is the greatest nfl player to ever live and he's name sweetness will live on forever🧡🧡
Walter Payton is my favorite running backs ever and one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. He was setting multiple records and earned the nickname Sweetness. He quickly established himself as the most versatile and powerful runner, breaking off tacklers, bouncing off defenders, passing skills and catching passes. He won the MVP award and he broke the rushing record for 275 yards in a single-game. He retired as the NFL’s all-time leading in rushing yards, touchdowns, yards from scrimmage and several other categories. His biggest accomplishment is helping his Bears dominate the NFL with a 15-1 record and a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots. He was more than just a complete football player, so he was a true legend.🏈🏈🏈🏈
Watching one of the pre game warm up on one of the football pregame shows they showed Walter doing head over heels somersaults from end zone to end zone, what an acrobatic feat and he made it look so simple and graceful.
The absolute GUTS on Walter; every time he took to the field. Toughness, along with his field awareness made him dangerous on either side of the ball. The day I heard of his passing I was unrecognizably saddened. Thank you Walter.
WALTER PAYTON WAS WITH US FOR ONLY 46 YEARS BUT HE LEFT THE WORLD A LIFE TIME OF MEMORIES HE ACHIEVED ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD BY GIVING HIS 100% TO THE GAME OF FOOTBALL-------REST IN PEACE-----.
God took his chisel and crafted a running back that had all the tools....power, speed, quickness, agility, fearlessness, and absolute determination to succeed. You were the GREATEST OF ALL TIME, WALTER!
I'm sure it's been mentioned, but he accomplished so much on terrible teams with terrible blocking and no threat of a passing game until 83/84. Everyone knew he was the Bears offense, and they still couldn't contain him. Imagine if he had that Dallas O line of the 90's.
Hes the best. He was the Bears. He single handedly carried that team for so long. He could just do everything. "Sweetness" was tough but it was his Heart. Dude didnt stop. So tough, he didnt avoid hits. He hit people double his size with ferocity. And he was a stand-up guy off the field. Forever my favorite player of all time. I know im biased. I dont care. His durability is insane too. 190 games. To put his workload in perspective. The modern running back in the NFL might get 280 carries in the season, look at his numbers. He bounced off of Ronnie Lott, one of the hardest hitters in NFL history, just took the hit and still stayed on his feet.
I'm always blown away by Walter Payton whenever I see these documentaries and highlight videos. He was a great football player and a really great human being. R.I.P Sweetness.

@@calronske1853 Brown was great but his shorter career and playing against smallish defenders make Brown hard to compare to today’s time. I understand people saying Brown was great, he was. I never put him in comparisons because I never saw him play. Videos are good but we didn’t see him play. Kinda like Chamberlain and Russell.
Didn't Barry retire to preserve Walters record ? If so I would think that makes Barry the GOAT. @@williamgullett5911
The greatest football player of all time. I’m not talking Quarterback, I’m not talking Wide Receiver, I’m not talking Tight End, and I’m not even just talking about Running Back. I’m talking football player. He could run better than anyone, he could block, he could run routes, and he could even throw the football. He truly is the greatest football player to ever play the game! GOAT
I still can't believe the Bears in that SB romp over NE did not single Payton out to score, Ditka was such an a##hole at times.
@@aarondigby5054 yeah he’s said that’s his biggest regret. He was so focused on winning he didn’t even think about it. Should’ve happened though.
The best combination of speed, power and balance as a runningback in NFL history
i think when you add his heart - i think you are right - he is equal to the top ten. these are " forever " people.
@@aarondigby5054 Shit, the Fridge got a score...unacceptable.
The Greatest and Most Beautifully made Walter Payton Career Highlights/Mini Documentary ever made on UA-cam by far.

He’s the best all around football player to ever play in the NFL
Yep
Btw this is going to go viral. What a masterpiece. Some of these clips I’ve never seen.
Same!
@@thepaperfootballleague2313❤🎉❤
Honestly the best highlight reel I've ever seen of Sweetness. Thanks NFL Throwback (@NFLVault)!I was born in the 80s and missed all but the tail end of his career.
W.P. is one of the greatest. You can't ask for more. The heart and the tenacity. And he didn't play for my team. He was just a phenomenal football player.
Both the best RB and QB in Bears history
True duel threat QB
I like that one 😁
And receiver
He started a game as qb an played the whole game there
AGREED.
Walter Payton was one of one
Unquestionable 🤷🏾♂️🤝🏽...
Greatest back ever, releantless!!
I AM 65 YEARS. I HAVE BEEN A FOOTBALL FAN FOR 60 YEARS. I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF RUNNERS COMING OUT OF THE BACKFIELD I HAVE ONE WORD FOR YOU. WALTER PEYTON
Ok here we go!!!! 38 minutes of Payton highlights!!!
walt could do everything .... he could freaking kick, pass, block, run, catch, return kicks, play qb, he just destroyed DBs too... man walter was the most complete player of all time
I am a Packer fan but in those days all that was in my local market was the Bears, I loved these games and actually started rooting for the Bears because of the greatest running back of all time, the late, great Walter Payton.
Walter Payton played the game with pure heart & emotion. His competitive spirit was unmatched.
What a playing this guy is he’s so much made for football he can break tackles 10X better then Derrick Henry he is a beast of nature💪🏽
By far the greatest football player of all time
Fantastic video! Love the clips combined with the voices. What a great player! Thank you ❤
He was so good at breaking tackles, nice combination of physicality with elusiveness.
When you factor in blocking, passing, and receiving it’s clear that
Walter Payton is the best offensive football player in the history of the NFL.
I was born in central IL and grew up watching 34. I couldn't agree more about the lessons learned from watching him. His teachings have served me well in life.
We have the best offensive player in the history of the game in Mr Walter Payton
I got to meet Walter Payton when I was a little kid. He was the most kindhearted person I've ever met in my life.
Great video. Incredible guy to watch. Such a great talent and nice guy. The nickname fits so well. RIP WP. 😢
(Insert mike drop now )now
Some of these highlights seriously look like a wild animal found it's way onto the field, nobody ran with more heart and tenacity than Walter Payton.
Adrian Peterson only
@@mixumup1 I always say Adrian Peterson was the only guy that reminded me of or that I would compare to Payton
Thisi is the finest tribute to Payton. Beautiful work regarding his beautiful work.
Lost him too soon - pure sweetness on and off the field. RIP.
This was the absolute greatest highlight video I've ever saw. You deserve some sort of recognition. Just incredible. Thank you
I don’t care what anyone says he’s the greatest running back of all time
My favorite line about Payton was , One day God decided to create a running back so he created Payton
Got my vote Walter Payton 😊
The greatest combination of speed, power and balance ever in a runningback
Superb way to end this amazing video with the great Emmitt Smith saying
“ His name is at the top of the list…..TRUST ME … TRUST ME HIS NAME IS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST!!!!” 🔥🔥
Absolute Chills they don’t make ‘em like that no more.
I don't care what anyone says, as far as I'm concerned, Walter Payton is the greatest RB of all-time & he might just be the greatest football player of all-time, as well!! 😤💯💙🧡🐻⬇️
I’ve said this frequently. Forget the RB argument. He was the best PLAYER of all time, regardless of position.
Simply amazing Walter Payton was one of a kind and thank you for the wonderful video.
The absolute best. Required viewing for any young football player. #heart #sweetness #gobears
I know this comment won't mean much but Walter Payton has been my favorite player since I was 7 years old and he passed away literally one day before I was born 11/04/1999
And with that I try and be as mentally tough as he was
Walter is the greatest nfl player to ever live and he's name sweetness will live on forever🧡🧡
... nice comment !
That was a great tribute to a great player...thank you...
Greatest running back to touch the football. Was waiting for them to make a highlight reel on Walter Payton 🏈💪🏾
Simply the GREATEST FOOTBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME!!! R.I.P Sweetness my Idol
A blend of Earl Campbell and Barry Sanders. A deadly combination.
Yes, indubitably so; alas if he only had their "SPEED of FOOT."
You don't see tailback like this anymore! Love watching this more than today's NFL football!
I am blessed to have seen him play.... hero!
He doesn't seem extra fast, just smart, careful, agile, and a pain to take down.
Walter Payton was my hero growing up. His will and drive to not let anyone take him down was remarkable.
Don't know what I'd do without you all. Great community, great channel, great people, great plays. All GREATNESS
Watching one of the pre game warm up on one of the football pregame shows they showed Walter doing head over heels somersaults from end zone to end zone, what an acrobatic feat and he made it look so simple and graceful.
Walter was my favorite RB of all time he is missed ..RIP SWEETNESS..#34🙏. They’ll Never be another.
Walter, and then everyone else. Thanks for posting. Even I chuckled when Lott got trucked the phunk over by Sweetness.
The absolute GUTS on Walter; every time he took to the field. Toughness, along with his field awareness made him dangerous on either side of the ball. The day I heard of his passing I was unrecognizably saddened. Thank you Walter.
Walter Payton and the 85 bears were dominating

Walter Payton is the only running back I've seen that rivals Barry sanders' sheer athleticism. His cuts, spins, speed, and power were amazing.

God took his chisel and crafted a running back that had all the tools....power, speed, quickness, agility, fearlessness, and absolute determination to succeed. You were the GREATEST OF ALL TIME, WALTER!
The effort he put into every run was crazy. Dude was a fucking gladiator.
Greatest football player ever and one of the best running backs ever.
Ummm...what? That makes zero sense lol
@@slipknot6789 A football player would encompass all aspects of playing football, not just one position. Seems pretty simple. Payton could do it all.
What a great player he was ,certainly on my mount Rushmore
My favorite player and a beautiful human being.
The absolute best running back of all time no disputing it
Not even a discussion can be had about it!
The true greatest running back of all time.. A masterpiece. Congratulations to NFL Throwback..
