The Only 8 Players To Ever Rush For 2,000+ Yards In A Season

- A lot of times NFL running backs are underappreciated for all their efforts on the field whether it is blocking or actually running the ball well. Today we look at the only 8 players in NFL history to rush for over 2000 yards in a single season. These eight guys the league couldn't ignore because of how good their performances were!
Craziest thing OJ did was 2000 yards in 14 games. 14 games!
Barry Sanders rushed for exactly 2000 over his final 14 games too, after just 53 yards on 25 carries over the first 2 weeks
He’s done crazier things
@@nonot8232it’s easy to kill, a 2k yard season is a different story
@@JohnFKennedy313 But “magically” making a glove not fit is definitely not easy
@@nonot8232 Him not going to jail for that might be crazier, you right. The killing two people part was easy for him
I grew up in 70's. Power Football. RB's were the QB's of today. They were the ones that you strapped a saddle on, and road it to SB. That was Football.
@@timorean320 true!! But 40 years later, most now are showing evidence of CTE!! That's because we did not realize that football can kill you!!
ok, CTE and players talking in hieroglyphics as a result is real football 😂
@@migo.offa30 You know what? Even with all we know, all the risks, Men will still play, and love it.
This is why I love to watch the current 49ers and Lions- great running games as well as passing the ball!
@@timorean320yeah play it smarter and better, so not running your back into the ground and maybe relying on the guy who could throw you the ball for 10+ years 😂.
Put Barry Sanders on Emit Smith's Cowboys and he has 3 plus 2,000 yard seasons easily...probably in a row. G.O.A.T. Period.
@@johnjohnson1657 Put Walter in his prime and he rushes for 3,000
@@samsonbabayan6894 You're either smokn' some good bud or you're absolutely delusional or both. As soon as you said "3,000 yards" your response fell into the trash can. Do some math on what he would've had to run each game for 3,000 yards in the amount of games played back then. Fandomship tends to put common sense to the side, as in your case. Anything else?
Is he really the GOAT when your only argument is a made up hypothetical scenario?
@@Supermanfan99um kinda….
In 16 games OJ would have had at least 2,300 yards. Probably more if he had cracked 200 in either one of those games.
Minnesota robbed AP of true immortality. He was THE last power back.
They didn't rob him of anything lol
AP tore his ACL and came back the very next year and not only joined the 2k club but almost had the record.. #MyGoatRb
Er. Derrick Henry? Hello?
I'm just going by the temporal aspect that defines things like 'before' and 'after'.
He didnt mention this in the video . But Minnesota had to kick that field goal to make the playoffs. It wasnt just a regular game
Derrick Henry was the last
Barry Sanders is the only back with almost 2 2k yard seasons. He’s 3rd on the list and like 12th again with 1800+ yards
O.J is the 2000 yard KING, he had only 14 games to do it. And he did it in 14 games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cj 2k in the first 2 clips just made me happy
David's style with Shanahan's O style really did him in !
Jamal Lewis was the most absolutely expected to make this list for me. I watched it happen.
Dude said Barry Sanders had a bad start the first two games of the year and only had 32 yards rushing the first game of the season and 20 yards rushing the second game of the season. Remind you there were 16 games in a season back in 97'. And then at the end he said Barry had 2 games with 200+ yards rushing and 14 games with 100+ yards rushing. How is that even possible when there were 16 games in a season in 97'?
Terrell Davis is my favorite player & the reason why I am a broncos fan barring injuries TD could have chased goat status
Simpson, Sanders, and Peterson all shatter Dickerson's record if they had as many carries as he did.
when i played football in middle school. i watched this one middle school kid on youtube who was an AMAZING RB and he ran for the equivalent of 2k yard in middle school ball. shit was insane n can’t EVER find it
Eric Dickerson's 2,000-yard season is still the gold standard, but with the way modern running backs are used, is there any chance this record will be broken, or are we witnessing the end of true workhorse backs in the NFL?
Man that guy crying at the beginning had more tears than I've ever seen. You could put a fire out with those
Peterson was disgusting as a runner. People forget they he had one year with a good qb other than that he never had any support. Dominating on the ground when the defense can load the box every play is amazing.
Yea. And the vikes were 1 bad play from the superbowl. Too bad that year he couldn't get out of his own way with all them fumbles that year atleast
@LifeIsChill13 I would argue they wouldn't have won that superbowl either way because of how beat up farve was after the bounty gate bs. However, it seems the saints may have won but cursed themselves in the process, which makes me smile every time it rears it's ugly head.
The 2k year the Vikings felt like they went back to the 60's with how dominant their run game was and how lacking the passing game was. Not to mention he had injuries that appeared during the season yet still cranked those yards out. It was honestly baffling how much he was doing to the point it completely overshadowed iirc a Kansas City RB Jamaal Charles? Who I think was also recovering from a significant injury at the time.
@@jeff8366 Losing 4 Superbowls is far more of a curse! At least the Saints knew how to take advantage of their opportunity. You Viqueens fans never cease to amaze as if your team never had some form of "bounties" or any NFL team for that matter, when Cris Carter could tell you otherwise; it's not like Goodell used the Saints as scapegoats due to the league being sued by former players to save face and attempt to "protect the shield" or anything! Should I fell to mention your team had a better chance in 98 to go to the SB and botched that up by losing to the Falcons who were 14-2 that year but didn't nearly possess the same firepower! Oh and what happened against the Giants 2 years later?
Yeah, they've owned the Saints in the playoffs (lately seems the only team they can beat just to get curb stomped the following week) except the one time when it counted most! That puts a smile upon my face every time!
Oh who was O.J QB
There’s only one out of these 8 who rushed for 2000 yds and won a Super Bowl in the same season: Terrell Davis. In fact when you add his post season games that year, no other RB is close to his total yards that season.
😂 im done... Dude called them the Jacksonville Jagwires LMFAO!
OJ Simpsons killed in football and always knew how to run away from people.
Yikes!
NFL champion NFL rookie of the Year 8x first team all pro 8x rushing yards leader 5x touchdown leader averaged 100 yards a game for his career. 3x MVP. Averaged 5.2 yards a carry for his career. No running back was greater than Jim Brown .
There needs to be an All Purpose Yard list. Chris Johnson is the only one in the top 10 from this list.
AP really knew how to beat defences and children
AP was the man! All day my fav on this list!
No matter what angle they might have had on the “Juice”, Oj still managed to get away free, some of those pursuers are still upset today

good job .. Fantasy Phenoms
Barry Sanders is probably the only one to ever do it without spiking the ball 😁👍
I love CJ2K but Henry is the GOAT
22:04 AJ Brown had 1000 recriving yards and Tannehill had 40 total tds so idk where you got that from.
Td was the best playoff RB OF ALL TIME
I might be wrong but I think Barry is only back with 2000 yards in college and nfl
By far the greatest was OJ as he did it in 14 game season!
It almost sounds like you said barry sanders was past his prime when he went off for 2000 yards. Barry was very much still in his prime, in fact that's the thing about it. He was still considered to be in his prime when he retired, which is why is surprised everyone. It's widely agreed upon the he would have been the all time league leading rusher had he not retired.... in his prime. Ask Emmit Smith, he even said that he would not have been the all time leading rusher had Barry not retired...in his prime.
Age 31 isn’t a RB prime…
Just a note to your editor, 6’3 is not 6.3 feet
Barry Sanders will always be the GOAT to me!👍
Opinions vary!
People forget how early Sanders could've broken the all time rushing record. He retired after another 1,000+ yard season, just 1k yards short of Walter Payton's record.
Took Emmitt Smith playing for quite a while after his prime & many years to finally beat it
Yeah we don't have video of Barry Sanders decline. Even Emmitt admitted he would've likely had the record had he stayed. He had almost 1500 yards rushing and only 4? TD I think his final year and it was considered a "down year." Honestly absurd looking back on it.
This is one reason I think he’s the best RB to ever lace em up
People forget that Payton played (3) 14 game seasons, lost 7 games to a strike shortened season and then bowed out gracefully his last season accommodate Neal Anderson. That's about 16 games and 1,500 rushing yards given away. Sanders would've needed 2,500 rushing yards to catch Walter when these are considered. I'm not saying that Barry couldn't have gotten the yards, but you can't only factor in what Sanders gave away without also factoring in what Walter gave away.
Barry's the goat
@@Bluewatercat Barry was one dimensional whereas Walter did everything. Barry is without a doubt the greatest breakaway runner of all time. But Payton was also a primary receiver with nearly 2,500 more yards than Barry. And Payton is the greatest blocking HB of all-time. In today's sports world, where all metrics are calculated to determine the GOAT, Payton's all around game makes him the best, by a wide margin.

@Sldumas1983 The Oilers ran Campbell into the ground.. He would have had a longer career if they had split some of his carries with another back the way they do now in today's NFL.
@@philb.1502 But they did and remember he didn’t play the lockout season, Earl ran when he wanted you got to remember in that era the ball was through the running and less passing.

What people forget about Terrell Davis is that the 2,008 yard year, he was often rested during a lot of those games. Denver would be up big and they would pull him. Could have been much more yards.

On top of that, Ryan Tannehill had 4,000 total yards and 40 total TDs. That comment you made there made no sense whatsoever since their defense was bad that year. Very bad.
Cozy super lucky to attend Ravens games when Jamal Lewis got 2K yards. His game at home against the Browns when he ran for 295 was truly insane. Baltimore was a safe city to be in that night.

Barry Sanders was my favorite running back in the 90's. He was the most explosive guy on the field, in my opinion. I didn't even like the tenderloins back then, but I liked to watch Barry. When I ran track, I modelled my running form after his style: low to the ground and aerodynamic with his elbows in.
Terrell Davis sat out for a total of 8 quarters in his 2000 yard achievement. He could have easily gained 2500 yards. He is the most unappreciated running back of all the 2000 yard rushers.
He also could have got hurt so I understand the coaches decision
Watch Bye Bye Barry he constantly took himself out of games he was a few carries away from the rookies rushing record and said naw I'm good.
Truth. Terrell Davis was dominance personified that year.
TD is tough to judge because he felt like a system back. Seemed like every RB they threw in there when he was hurt or retired also dominated. Heck, Portis averaged 5 YPC behind that Broncos line and never came close to that in Washington.
Terrell had a feared QB to relax the defense on him tho.
Walter Payton was on the verge of a 2,000 yard rushing season in 1977 when the season was only 14 games. The final game was played on a literal field of ice. Everyone was slipping and falling and consequently Walter came up short. If it was a 16 game season, no doubt Payton would hold the record. Walter was also the Bears primary receiver and blocked on plays when he didn't have the ball. None of the other backs had these responsibilities.
Amen. Walter Payton is the greatest running back of all time, because he was a "complete" running back, that spawned LT, Marshall Faulk, Christian McCaffrey and others too. Payton showed running backs how be a hybrid, running, receiving, blocking, throwing touchdowns and kick off returns. Walter Payton is the best no question, and my favorite player, well him and Lawrence Taylor.

It’s all about the touches and not number of games played to try to make a valid comparison. When looking at rushing attempts, Barry and OJ win the contest, with both having roughly the same number of rushing attempts. All others have more to much more attempts. Davis had nearly 60 more attempts that season vs Barry and OJ. Barry posted the best per rushing average at 6.1 yards per rush and was the oldest player to rush for 2000 yards in a season.
Sanders had a shitty first two games and then rushed for exactly 2,000 yards in the final 14 games, an average of 142.8 yards per game. Had he posted that average in all 16 games, Sanders would have finished with 2,285 yards.
Barry sanders along with Jim brown had many good years ahead of him

Terrel Davis did it while sitting out 8 quarters out of a 16 game season. Practically he did it in 14 games.
Just for clarification, he sat out those quarters because the Broncos were so far ahead keeping him in was not worth the risk of injury.
Sanders had 53 total yards through 2 games. Then collect 2000 in his final 14 games.

What may be the most amazing thing about Peterson's 2000+ yard season is not that it came 8 months after the knee injury. It's that it came on a team with no other offense. Everyone on the planet knew Peterson was going to get the ball on most plays. He was frequently facing 9-10 men in the box because no defense was worried that Ponder was going to beat them in the air... and still couldn't be contained.
