Im surprised not more people do this video more often. I often ride lower in sag and use a lot of compression for mid stroke support. Seperate High and Low speed control is so useful for me and I am really looking forward doing this installation on my Z1 coil very soon as well.
I mean.... I kind of get why they don't as it's only $50 shy (at time of filming) from a Fox 36... but for heavier folk or people who have forearm/wrist discomfort or even arm pump from small trail chatter... this is the best combo I'm aware of for it. I still need to get my 2021 Fox 36 converted to coil and then do back to back rides between the two setups.
Awesome review!!! I'm thinking about eventually switching to a grip 2 damper when I get my foxzochi bomber... Now just need some Mexican food and white claws...
Thanks for posting this video! I just ordered a Z1 Air 160mm thanks to you. Fox should send you a commission check. Found the Z1 Air 160mm on sale for $620. I went back and forth between Air or Coil and decided on Air to save some weight on the build for now. Knowing I can upgrade to Grip2 plus have a coil option sealed the deal for me. I was also going back and forth between Z1 or 36 Performance Elite but decided to save $300 for now. The stock Grip damper may work fine for me at 160 Ibs. I suspect there will be a Marzocchi 38 to compete with Domain and Zeb in the near future. Hmmm...maybe I should have waited.
Thanks for the great review🤘 Seeing the pricetag in the end I have been wondering if there are any stiffer MZ1 coils available to prevent heavier riders from bottoming out?
Hey Dave! I'm 235. No issues here on the stiffest spring with this setup. It would be rad if they had more stiff springs though. For heavier riders coil is just such a no brainer!
Hello! Is it possible to install Fox 36 GRIP2 Damper Cartridge (820-18-335-KIT, i.e. for 180mm travel) to Marzocchi Bomber Z1 Coil with travel adjusted to 160mm?
Nice to see this is an option as I am looking at it myself. I do have one question though. What is up with those cables?? Super long, hanging all over. Total disaster...
Heh yeah I never bothered to shorten the really long front and rear cable after install. Hasn't bothered me enough to fix it. I'd have fixed it in the winter buy I've been surfing down south instead of being cooped up!
Not really? It did let me adjust low speed rebound to be quicker but keep high speed rebound up so it wasn't kicky on big hits. Without high speed rebound you'd have to compromise normally and have a slower rebounding ride (can't boost off of things as easy) or you'd have a faster rebounding ride for boosting(and traction in my opinion) but it would be hardh on heavy landings. It's still not as poppy as air suspension, but if your air suspension is that puppy you're going to get bucked in really not bottom outs generally speaking.
Do you mind sharing the model year of the fork and the damper? I've bought a Z1 Coil M.Y. 2021 and I see both a 2018 and 2021 version of the damper. I'd go for the newer which is called 820-18-335 by fox. Just wanted to be sure. Thank you very much, wish you the best!
@@shredandenjoy7311 Okay, I solved it! I'll write it down in case someone needs the same answers as I did. Basically the 820-18-335 is just an updated version of the grip2 damper that solves a problem with the compression being too harsh for light riders, increasing the range of adjustment. That's also the correct one to install into the Z1 coil, as it just threads in as shown in the video. I'll have mine installed sometimes next month (availability is kinda crap) and I can't wait to shred my new Kitsuma+Z1 Coil Grip2 build 😍
I was 240 at the time of filming. Worked great. Don't think you'd want to go past 250ish though. Having high speed compression really helps expand the capabilities of the coil springs ability to provide support across a wide weight range.
@@shredandenjoy7311 I really appreciate the quick response. Right now I have the Lyrik ultimate and like you said I can't find a happy place with the air spring. Same when I had a fox 36. So basically I'm torn between getting the Bomber Z1 or installing the smashpot kit into my Lyrik. Price wise it come out close to the same.
I'm running 29x2.5 with room to breath. In the 29 fork I'd feel pretty safe running that 27.5+ tire size. You likely wouldn't get it on the 27.5 fork thoug. I'd also encourage anyone to go 29 over 27.5+. Way better rollover and much faster. All 27.5+ did better for me was improved braking.

Wow. Great video on this swap and also lots of suspension info explained at at level I can understand.
Glad you found my descriptions and some images alongside it helpful.
been very impressed with my smashpot conversion on my zeb

Great video! Can you add a Marzocchi Coil kit to a Fox 36?

Think you could do this with a Z1 air? I have a pooched 36 factory with a prefectly fine dampener.
Thanks for the great review🤘

oposite, 36fox grip 2 with marzocchi coil kitt upgrade?
I put a z1 coil in my rhythm with a grip 2 and just recently installed a vvc top cap assembly.
@@toddeasterbrook8936 what is a vvc top cap? Replacement partor something additional? Thanks

Did you find that you had to run your rebound slower with the coil conversion?

Great video! I am currently between 250-260. Do you think the Z1 coil would still work fine?
I believe so but much more and you're going to struggle
@@shredandenjoy7311 Thanks for the quick reply. Hopefully I can shed some more weight and will look into it.

Hi, i hve now z1, i want to put lyrik ultimate charger 2.1, which better?
hey mate great vid, i have the z1 with the stiffest spring, did the grip 2 allow you to boost off stuff more than stock?

Did the damper come with the high and low rebound knobs? Or did you have to get them separate?

hey could i remove the grip 2 from my air fork in the same manor as the car park install without dropping lowers?
Yes. You don't need to drop lowers to remove damper.
How much do you weigh? I’m looking at getting the z1 coil but I’m concerned with only having 4 spring choices. I’m 220lbs for reference.
