Sooo I ordered this shock because of this video and put it on my Stumpjumper. It added weight and was very eager to go through the travel when climbing. I could have possibly gone with a 600lb spring. But then I tackled my least favorite techy climbs and found that I was clearing sections I couldn’t previously. Medium rebound = major grip. My downhill chatter and rock gardens are fun now instead of death grip sessions. I’ll take the weight penalty for the performance 10/10 times. In short, it punches above its price point and I’m starting to see these on Uber expensive bikes on my local trails.

Nice. What kind of stumpjumper do you have? I have a 2020 Stumpjumper Evo 27.5 and I read that the 210x55mm fits. Might take the plunge…

I’m a novice on these things. Are coil shocks more reliable than air?.
I have a San Quentin 2 that came with a RockShox RL air fork when that one breaks I think I’m going your route but only if it’s more reliable. Still this shock cost almost like the whole bike ha.

Yeah it does. I like more hard tails because I don’t jump from cliffs. Full suspension is coming soon. Also I have a Gravel and thinking about a road bike.
I have been riding like 8 months and doing better than people with $3,000 bikes.
What I know is that when things breaks I hate it. That’s why I’m looking at this fork.

I'd love to see a large blind test study between this and all the other current coil and air shocks. Have 10-15 test riders all with similar travel bikes. Then have an independent hidden party install the shocks on each bike, followed by wrapping each in a cloth "jacket" of some kind, and zip tie it tight on the bike. Have the riders shred a test circuit that has a climb followed by a descent that has both fast flow, and rocky / blocky stuff. Then have the same independent party swap the shocks between each bike and re-hide the shocks with the test jacket / zip tie thing. Repeat the test until each rider has done a lap on each shock. From here, design a standardized questionnaire that allows for subjective measures to be transferred into objective data.
I would be VERY curious to know if these "cheap" shocks hold a flame to top-tier products like the 11.6, in terms of statistical significance for rider feedback scores.
This test could be re-run several times, with several groups of testers to increase statistical significance. From there, you could also structure into the questionnaire some sort of metric that looks at rider biases based on perceived value based on shock brand. With that data, you could sort out what statistical significance perceived value has on perceived shock performance. The models could also be isolated for analysis on coil vs. air on perceived rider shock descending performance, as well as for climbing performance.
You could take this even a step further by creating yet another test study that does the same test, except this time allow each rider to know which shock they are riding. Run each shock on multiple test rider's bikes and run a statistical model that isolates "knowledge of shock brand, and its correlation to shock performance".
After running both studies, my hunch is that the high-end / expensive shocks would probably out-perform the cheaper products in terms of blind rider feedback, as well as non-blind rider feedback. However, I also think that perceived value would have a statistically significant impact on a rider's perceived shock performance. In other words, perceived value very likely has a significant impact on how someone "feels" that a shock is performing. Its possible that even if a more expensive shock feels worse than a cheaper shock, that the perceived value factor potentially offsets that difference.
I think a killer example of this is hubs. As of 2020, its really damn hard to find a garbage sealed bearing hub on the market. I'm willing to bet that cheap vs. expensive hubs are damn difficult to distinguish on the ride, particularly if you can't see them / distinguish the hub brand because of some test design.
I am kind of sick of the bike industry constantly convincing all of us that we NEED to upgrade to the newest shit because it supposedly waaaay out-performs the previous product.
Now, all of this crap being typed, I love the 11.6 and I9 hubs! LOL

It had coil and boy was that bike fun to ride. I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since. I’m saving my spare change for this thing hopefully it won’t disappoint.

The first blow, I waited 3 + weeks for a warranty ... that stunk! Now it's in for a second time at dirtlabs in Longmont CO. So three fails total. I'm over it and need to replace it with a shock that is reliable. Is anyone else dealing with multiple fails? What a pain in the ars!

that should be the way they do it..unfortunatly the HSC is to closed and its only solvable with a tune witch cost the same as a service..I managed to get mine riding well with a TI spring but im lucky that a friend is a FOX technician and had springs to try free of charge..still might go for the tune later on

I have a 2021 Vitus Mythique VRS with Fusion air shock 200mm x 56mm. I am a heavy rider about 255 lbs and am always have to put air in rear shock. Is this compatible? Thanks

  • @AbideinChristSealed

The calculator you use says 340ish lbs, and the Marzoochi site says 380 lbs. In Capra forums for my bike people are using 500-550 lbs, but for FOX DHX2. Does brand matter? I wonder why the large differences?

Hi Mike! I’d like to get one of these and put it on my Commencal Meta TR29 and at the same time add a bit of travel (fits 210x55). The thing is that the rear eyelet is horizontal, so rotated 90 degrees as oppose to the front eyelet. Is this an easy thing to do? Can I adjust that out of the box or is going to be tricky

I ordered that shock yesterday and I don't know what to do for the spring. The TFT spring calculator gives me 527 for a plush/33% sag for my type of riding.... that is right in the middle of a 500 and 550 shock... what is the advice in this case? Go a tad firmer (550#) or a tad softer (#500)...?
Speaking of the TFT spring calculator... I assume Rear WHEEL travel is the same thing as my FRAME rear travel?

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  2 роки тому +1

Hey Fred! It's hard to say because there are a lot of variables that go into choosing spring weight. Most importantly is how aggressive of a rider you are. For anyone who's priority is a comfortable and safe ride, then the softer spring is a great option. If you're someone pushing the limits and looking for some adrenaline, then going up to the 550 is a good idea.
Another option is the sprindex (which I use on my bike), which lets you get more specific with your spring weight.
And yes your rear wheel travel is the same as your frame travel as long as you haven't changed stroke length or installed something like a cascade link! -Tor

I’ve been wondering how the new 2020 giant reign 29 is with a coil would be as I used to ride the 2017 giant reign with a coil but it was not good what so ever because on the smallest jump it would bottom out as the frame wasn’t progressive...

I am looking for a new shock (216x63) for my bike but have been told because of my weight (115kg) 254 lbs with full kit there is no coil that will take my weight? I like to have a lot of support & no bobbing on the climbs with my shock.
I have been told I will have to have an air shock & it's about £500 to £700 uk. $682 to $955 US
    What do you think ?
Would this shock be any good for me?
Do they have a spring that would take my weight?

I run a Cane Creek Coil and a Ohlins ttx coil on my dh bike. But I really would like to have a much simpler shock. 90% of riders don't even change the settings on their dhx2's and Cane creeks. SImplicity=reliability
