Naked Snake ≠ Solid Snake Sorry for the slip of the tongue there guys. I OF COURSE know Big Boss is known as Naked Snake in this game. What happened here is years of hearing "solid snake" and a distinct lack of calling Naked Snake by his full code name throughout MGS3. As you know most characters default to just calling him Snake. And so since solid snake also drops the "solid" in favor of just "Snake", my brain was doing this weird thing where it just wanted to say Solid Snake. So despite catching myself a few times annoyingly saying "Solid Snake" by accident. I guess i didnt catch them all in the editing process. Wanted to admit the error myself and dispel the idea that im a "fake fan" with insight into how this happens.
In MGS discourse there's nothing that makes the ol' predator's instinct kick in higher than someone mistaking Naked snake with Solid snake, it's like their own metaphysical gulp of ichor, bite of ambrosia. Hence why I always refer to every snake as David Hayter or Not David Hayter.
the stuck arrows are not a glitch, when you don't pull out arrows, bullets or other shrapnel before letting a wound heal it's stuck there for the rest of the playthrough. it's an intentional feature, Kojima planned this to emphasise on hardships Snake deals with along the story
When I figured this out, I did the minimum to stop the poison and tank as many arrows as I could with The Fear. Watching cutscenes with pincushion Snake wearing American face paint never gets old.
That stuff at the end where they managed to fake specular reflections with transparency maps or whatever is blowing my mind. It's so easy now to get reflections like that with the modern PBR workflow, yet the MGS3 team really had to go the extra mile in the mid-2000s to achieve that effect on floors and walls we barely pay attention to before the technology caught up! I really appreciate that detail now!
The devs that worked on mgs 3 were definitely extremely talented and even as a pre teen i was able to recognize that it felt more technically impressive than a lot of other ps2 games even when i couldnt put my finger on exactly why
Game developer here; the reason The End’s eyeballs are like that is because they modeled “more” of them (i.e. they almost make a full sphere) to account for them popping out a bit in certain scenes, but for performance reasons they removed the vertex on the opposite side of the eye. Why? Because no matter how much it pops out you never see that side of it, so they modeled just enough to allow the animators to do that. Also the reason you can see inside of it is because the game doesn’t use back face culling (also called double sided rendering) so you’re seeing the exterior pupil from the inside :)
19:25 it's seeing incredible visual tricks like this and these episodes of BB that I love so much. Really helps me think of more performant ways of crafting scenes. Cheers Shesez!
It really is amazing what they pulled off with this game. I think a lot of the details were managed with clever texture tricks but they must have had some impressive memory management tricks as well considering the limitations of the system. Unlike the PS1 the PS2 did have a Z-Buffer which I'm sure helped a ton but this was still the days of bespoke hardware mostly based on Power PC architectures (nowadays only the Switch has a non-standard architecture, closer to a phone than a PC, but even so modern development software makes porting much simpler).
4:56 I'm pretty sure that in the top left corner of the philosopher's legacy, that's a portrait. You've got it turned horizontally. The other pictures appear to be the portraits of other philosophers.
At 17:09 the tombstone says "HIRO L USUDA WATERMARK" Hiro Usuda is one of the artists who worked on MGS and Silent Hill series. This might be a prop she produced. I saw this in a video by thevoicebox who relised his own mgs3 out of bounds video a few weeks ago.
I find it funny how there's comments calling out the "Solid Snake" slip up near the end, but they miss the fact he did it earlier in the video too. But he did also call him Naked Snake in parts of the video so y'know, not like he doesn't know that. Comment engagement if nothing else. lmao
Got more than one the glitch he was talking about with the arrows wasn't a glitch it was an intentional feature if you fail to remove the arrows during the fear boss fight.
Arrows do not disappear if the injury is somehow healed without actually removing the arrow itself. For example, healing the wounds without removing the arrow dramatically increases the natural healing of that injury. The injury is naturally cured and removed from the list of injuries, but nothing was done to remove the arrow model in your body.
18:08 So actually in the cutscene you can clearly see Fury without his helmet, this was something you're able to see in the cutscene without the boundary breaking
I suppose it wouldn't have made sense for them to make a separate character for Snake with one eye, at least not in the original PS2 one... The game is probably pushing the DVD's storage space as is.
I love that you got footage of Snake shoving something up his butt. Also, this episode must hold the record for creepy "camera inside a character's head" shots. Lastly, seeing Snake roaming around with a bunch of arrows in him made me laugh
Stuck arrows aren't a glitch :) If you don't remove certain injuries quickly enough they remain for the entire game to show what Snake has been through.
20:05 im fairly sure thats just a case of the whole model includes the emission light texture WITH the ceiling light part. no real light casting, just probably easier to dupe the model than pulling the texture from it on its own. also sad about the cave cutscene, BUT surely someday somebody will figure out how to un-cull the models in all the shadow-only situations so we can see the shenaningans.
Mgs3 is still my all time favorite game. Though there were some mistakes in this video, it doesnt matter, this was great video and had been hoping for an episode dedicated to mgs3!
Just got the notification for this! I’ve seen your sneak preview of this game on your Twitch stream! Keep up the great work Shesez and I can’t wait to check this one out!
Seeing Snake full of arrows in your footage is funny to me because I had the same thing happen to me in my play through on the PS3 HD copy. Edit: Another commenter pointed out that’s a feature if you don’t remove the arrows in time.
Would've been really interesting to see underneath The Pain's mask, the guards throughout the games mask and especially get a closer look at The Pain's hornet's whenever they surrounded him or they formed weapons. Also would've been neat to see the Secret Theater scenes from different angles. And nothing with The Sorrow's river when you actually fight him? Surely there should be some off-camera secrets there especially if you killed a lot of soldiers throughout the game.
the arrows in his body aren't glitches - it's by design. If you leave them in you 'heal' with them and like you notice, they can't be scooped out anymore. We noticed that back at launch and used it on purpose to try to get through the game collecting body arrows.
This is my favorite metal gear game. A true Masterpiece imo. I love it so much that I even have the Nintendo 3ds port of "Metal gear Solid 3d: snake eater". There's a few 3DS games that are so impressive to see running on such underpowered hardware that it adds an extra sense of awe to the experience. Games like "Kid Icarus uprising", "Monster Hunter 5: Generations", "Monster Hunter: Stories", "Resident Evil: Revelations", "Xenoblade chronicles" (imo the most impressive marvel of technical achievement on the 3ds as it's just completely bonkers to see every inch of that massive game running on a 3ds), and of course "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater". Especially before the Switch came around it was truly something special to play these games on a portable piece of Nintendo hardware. Anyways, unfortunately like many other 3ds titles, MGS snake snacker is now semi rare and expensive to buy. But if you really love the game I would highly recommend getting it anyways. It's only gonna increase in value and it's just so damn cool.
PLEASE do a long episode showing out of bounds / out of reach areas for all the tracks in the Crash Team Racing Remake. There are times when I'm racing and think "dang, I wish I could get over there" and.. "dang, I wish I could get over there too".
Man, ocelots soldiers look even dumber than before in that wide shot. “Leave him, Shoot the other one!” *approaches snake to hit him I guess because he’s stupid* *nobody out of the several people surrounding him with guns put him down with automatic fire and shotgun blasts*
Second time watching this lol love these kinds of videos, but did anyone ask you to see what Snake looks like when he stands on his tippy toes? I always wondered myself the animation has to look goofy but we can only do it in first person.
oOh boy, Somebody didn't do their research and now all Metal Gear fans across the world have united to look down upon Shesez for getting one very simple (yet very important) lore aspect wrong. A lot of the transparency tricks done with the lighting and texture effects are the same as what The Twin Snakes had, which is weird because TTS was made by a different developer (Silicon Knights).
The "Godzilla" photo looks like it might be someone (Snake?) in a cave, I'm thinking they put some concept art into the game itself. Look at the darker lines towards the bottom, they look like a figure standing there.

MGSIII is an excellent example of what the PS2 is really capable of!
More like the actual capabilities of game developer when they are not being spoiled by advance hardware.
I give the credit to the developers.
You can get Fear's arrows permanently stuck in Snake by treating the injury witj anything except the knife and letting it heal over time
I let em stick in for my first run and ran around as Naked Porcupine.
