    You don’t have to cross your fingers and just hope that a child with autism will become conversational. There are building blocks that you can teach that will help a child become more conversant and get them to be able to answer intraverbal questions. Since becoming a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst in 2003, I’ve learned how to quickly assess where a child’s language skills are at, and how to build on those skills to improve their ability to communicate.
    B.F. Skinner’s book, Verbal Behavior, really lays out the groundwork for how language learning occurs and sets up the order in which we should teach language to children with autism. Mands, tacts, and echoics will occur first in language development, and intraverbals will come in later. But intraverbals are incredibly important because most of what we learn in life, whether it’s in school or just building relationships, revolve around the give and take of the “who, what, why, when, where” questions.
    In today’s video you’ll learn:
    ✔️ The order in which a child with autism needs to learn the four operants.
    ✔️ How to quickly assess how high functioning a child with autism is.
    ✔️ Real-life examples of how I’ve given intraverbal assessments and what they can tell me about a child’s communication skills.
    ✔️ My tips for giving a successful intraverbal assessment.

    This is great, thank you. My daughter is 3 and has a lot of words and phrases but is not very conversational. Occasionally we can go back and forth with one question and answer but that’s about it so we are really working on this. She reminds me of the girl you described getting super upset when she saw you mark a negative. If I try to correct my daughter or say calm down or anything like that, she goes crazy. I am seeking out a behavioral coach to maybe help us figure out some ways to work with her because I think a lot of her behaviors are because she’s just a toddler, not necessarily because she’s on the spectrum. I’m never quite sure how to handle each situation. We have a lot to work on. I’m trying not to get overwhelmed 😩

    Is there any intraverbal assessment list available for a pre teen or teenager with autism? I would like to test my child.. he is almost 13..

      The intraverbal subtest is good for kids with language levels of under 5 regardless of chronological age. Is the child developmentally older Than this?

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  3 роки тому +1

      Intraverbals is the hardest operant and at just 2.5 he may not be ready for some of the questions. Make sure he can fill in the blanks to songs and such.

    My son is turning 4 this year and he still isn’t speaking, he will try to say words but will give up very easily and start hitting himself, do you have any advice with Kids who have ASD that hit themselves?

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  Рік тому

      Hitting and self injurious behavior can be so tough! Do you have a BCBA that helps you? My biggest recommendation would be to join my online toddler course and community, where my team and I can help you begin to engage your son at the learning table, increase his language skills, and decrease problem behaviors like you described. You can learn more about my courses by joining a free 1 hour webinar here: MaryBarbera.com/workshop or jump right in at MaryBarbera.com/courses.
      Here's a podcast episode, where I interviewed Dr. Vollmer about SIB and aggression with autism that I think you'll find helpful: marybarbera.com/self-injurious-behavior-aggression/.
