  • Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP of teachmetotalk.com for this podcast for CE credit for therapists as we discuss joint attention and turn taking in very young children with autism or red flags for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Do you recognize these behaviors in the young children you treat? Is it difficult for a child to stop, listen, and respond to you when he’s busy with something else? When you point to something to show your child, does he continue what he’s doing, rather than look? When you bring out a child’s favorite food, a preferred toy, or some kind of screen, do you seem to disappear because your child becomes intently focused on the item and no longer looks at you? Do you have to work hard to get her to play a little game with you like “Peek A Boo” or giving kisses? Does she stop after one or two rounds instead of keeping it going? Does she seem to ignore you when you try to get her to make a choice or try to respond to your questions, even without words? If you answered yes to these questions, a child you're working with has difficulty with joint attention and turn taking - which also leads to being concerned about autism - not just language delay. Kids who have difficulty with joint attention and turn taking miss hundreds of opportunities each day to learn language. When we prioritize these skills as goals for therapy, we begin to see changes in other areas of communication too! The course handout will be provided with the purchase of the course credit at teachmetotalk.com.. show 404... teachmetotalk.com/ceu_course/...

Thank you so much for providing us with these videos. I'm quite sure my 16 month old son is autistic, I'm just waiting for his evaluation. Thanks to you I now have the resources to learn the skills to provide him with the correct interactions he needs to learn

I love your videos! I purchased your autism workbook and am just starting out in all of this. We are in between speech therapists, as we have had only therapists that have let us down. So i am taking a bigger control of their speech and trying to understand all of this! ❤️

As a (non-sponsored, hah!) speech therapist, I'm SO GLAD you're getting her books! So much of this wasn't taught to STs in grad school, and we often don't realize when we need to take a developmental approach versus a "classic" ST approach. In general, Laura's stuff has really helped me in my practice to work with tiny kiddos across the board, so you're in the right place!!

@@mariecarie1 hi there, this is really interesting... can you tell me what you mean by a developmental approach vs a classic approach? What are the differences?

@@Abulina09 As speech therapists, we often focus so much on just getting a toddler to say something-ANYthing-that we often forget that learning how to learn (to develop) has to happen first. Developmental therapists focus on playing, taking turns, following directions and, essentially, learning how to learn. If we early intervention speech therapists can also better implement these skills, we would be assisting the DT achieve their goals AND help lay a more solid foundation for true speech therapy to take effect.
Hope that clarifies what I meant! 😁

Hi Laura do you have advice for a 2yo with asd who will not imitate actions on himself? Like if I show him how to use a comb, he will try to comb my hair but not his. When I clap and say clap, he will only try to clap my hands not his.

Hi! This podcast series is a great place to start. I also highly recommend my therapy manual The Autism Workbook. The checklist and questions will help you decide what to work on first at home and the strategies are outlined so you can get started the day you get the book. Here's the link:
