  • This week’s film breakdown analyzes Trevor Lawrence's rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars have drafted rookie quarterbacks in the first round in the past, but time and time again, they’ve churned them through their factory of sadness, and ultimately ruined them. Unsurprisingly, Lawrence had a horrible season and the Jaguars went 3 and 14. What happened during his rookie season? And are there any hopes of improvement? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Jacksonville Jaguars Quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

      Tom Brady is overrated. Pretty much every team he's been on was stacked (players and coaches). Put him on a team like the Jags for every year of his career and all those rings and MVP awards go away. Would likely still a HoFer but definitely not GOAT status.

    The one thing I do like about Lawrence was his willingness to stand up to his coaching staff. When they benched Robinson for a fumble he went to them and had Robinson's back and in a press conference he called out the disarray within the organization and did it in a way that was diplomatic at the same time. He looks and seems very laid back but he also is willing to step up and be forceful and showed leadership as a rookie. Whether that overcomes other deficiencies we shall see but at the very least he's willing to step up and say what needs to be said.

      Thing is a well ran coaching staff wouldn't even get to that situation. Rational minds would be in sync with Lawrence in trying to get the most out of both sides of the ball. If the generational QB has to be pulling these things, legit ownership/FO (and they have much at stake with this as well) have to bring in ACTUAL adults who have a plan to help coach these young adults in a work environment.

    I still believe Trevor Lawrence can be a great QB and fulfill his potential, but the next season or so will be pivotal in determining that. Whether that will be a detriment to his overall development remains to be seen. He was fantastic in college, but I don’t think any QB could do anything with that Jags offense and Meyer as head coach. He was undoubtedly the biggest blue chip QB to come out of college since Luck. Anyone needing a QB would have selected him at 1.

    • @TheHeadincharge
      @TheHeadincharge 2 роки тому +4

      The worst QB on the best team is still going to be far better than the best QB on the worst team (only factoring in offense of course). Would love to see what Lawrence could do on a good team. Shit, imagine him on the patriots for example.

      Trevor Lawrence is Tim Tebow 2.0 - a great college quarterback who, once he got to the NFL level showed the deficiencies in his game when against a similar caliber of athlete to his own squad, unlike his situation in college. Just look at what LSU did to him in the 2019 championship game. Ok, that's cruel - he has better mechanics than Tebow... but he's not the talent he's been hyped to be.
      The Jags have a poor O-line, and even if Lawrence is better than I've ever thought he was, he'll never have a chance to show it with an O-line that can't keep him clean.
      On the other hand, the Bengals, who also have a terrible O-line, went to the Super Bowl last year behind the same QB that thrashed Lawrence in the aforementioned 2019 Championship game. Don't even try to argue the point, Burrow is the most sacked QB in the league since he came into the league! Its not even close, either.
      I don;t think Lawrence has any real shot to be Aaron Rodgers 2.0, but he DEFINITELY doesn't have a chance if the Jags don't buy him a better O-line!

  • @SayNoobB4ULeave

    This is why the Jags overpaid for Kirk btw. Getting some players in there that are at least good enough for your young QB to actually get to play normal QB snaps and improve is 10x more important than whatever production you think you will get from Kirk. The Jags aren't paying 18 million to Kirk for ~1000 receiving yards, they are paying him 18 million to allow Lawrence to develop. In the short term that might be an overpay, but in 3 years time when they can get out of that contract that 18 million is worth every penny if it means Lawrence has developed into a franchise QB.

    Great spotlight. After the 49ers the Jags are one of a couple teams I like to keep my eye on (loved the Brunell/Coughlin years). Really unfortunate what happened last season with Urban Meyer nuking the franchise, and basically wasting a year of Lawrence's development. Hopefully, he'll be able to bounce back under an actual competent coach in Doug Pederson. It's only been one season, so if he's developed any really bad habits, maybe Doug can start to iron them out. Team still needs a lot of talent though, and I'm really curious as to why they shelled out a bunch of money for guys like Zay Jones or Christian Kirk. I know Lawrence needs weapons, but damn that's a lot of money in guys that haven't necessarily done big things in the league. Also, maybe I'm spiteful since he was the previous GM with the 49ers, but Trent Baalke being involved seems like a demoralizing reality.

As you were saying 'he had nobody open'', he had a guy open at the 36 and the 46 - 1 open at the first down, and 1, 10 yards beyond (looking back at Lawrence, ready for the ball). If he'd thrown it quick and early, especially to the guy at the 46, with the receiver still running, he'd have had this 1st down and possibly more.

I think that Doug Pederson is an amazing hire and I'm happy that they went after some players in free agency opposed to what they did last year. Here's a hot take: if Pederson can get the most out of Trevor Lawrence in his sophomore year the Jaguars will be a playoffs-calibre team

    Trevor Lawrence's ceiling -- not the floor, but the CEILING -- with the Jaguars is Matt Stafford when he was with the Lions. A solid upper half quarterback who can look legitimately top-tier in certain seasons, but is always held back by the sheer incompetence (or insincerity) of the franchise he plays for. Of course, given how Stafford's first season outside of Detroit went, all is not doom-and-gloom for Trevor. It's just gonna be really bittersweet watching him have major team success elsewhere, whether it's 10 years from now, at the twilight of his career, or maybe even 5 years when he gets fed up of the Jags' constant self-destruction.

      I think that's a great comp in terms of best case scenario. I will say however that Trevor doesn't have anybody at receiver who's ever even sniffed a pro bowl consideration and Stafford had Megatron. Evan Engram does not count

      @@AlexRollinsNFL I know people were throwing Peyton rookie comparisons but there was a reason why Marvin Harrison who was a lanky outside receiver went from a project 50 catch guy in year 1 to a 100+ catch guy in year 2. Besides talent chemistry matters. In recent years not all young QBs got their dreamy star WR early on (Josh Allen didn't get Stefon Diggs till year 3 with the Bills, Kyler didn't get D-Hop till year 2 with the Cards) but if these young QBs are to ascend and reach their ceilings, they need to get comfy with great quality receiver talents. Stafford was able to get comfy going deep knowing Megatron was always a looming threat at the sidelines.

MJD was as great RB and the Jags were tough back then, too, then something happened and they just could not seem to get the draft picks right. I recall when the grabbed Justin Blackmon...I thought he was gonna be great...he wasn't. Then it was a string of QB's that either had bad luck or were really not ready for the NFL. I'm wondering how bad they're gonna ruin Lawrence before he escapes to a winner.

    Urban as the Jags coach set them back. A money grab. The organization needs the right PRO football leadership. Trust is the issue and talent acquisition.
    If ANY football team get their lines of scrimmage issues corrected, they can scheme sub level talent to wins or at least exciting pro football.
    They remind me of the 70s through the 80s old Tampa Bay Bucs. Until they got the right coach (Tony Dungy) in the 90s. If you are not old enough to remember, ask your parents.

    • @Nightwishmaster
      @Nightwishmaster 2 роки тому +1

      That's exactly the problem with hiring guys like Urban, not even getting into all the dumb shit he pulled. Guys like him are rockstars at the FBS level and they don't seem to either believe or understand that those exact same plays you were running against teams you outgunned by an absurd amount of talent won't translate to the league. Sure when you where in college and you had a bunch of future NFL players rolling over a bunch of future accountants and shit with some random NFL talent thrown in here or there it's one thing, you can somewhat consistently count on your guys being able to outplay the others, but in the NFL the skill gap is significantly smaller and all of a sudden those easy windows and gimme plays don't exist any more. I honestly feel so bad for Trevor, what a waste of potential talent rotting away with that Jags org, I truly hope they can get their shit together and at the minimum allow him a chance to bloom into the player he has the potential to be... (not a Jags fan btw, just hate to see them ruining such a promising career)

    You have me wondering if that play with the outside WR off the line and having to go in front of the out route was during Urban Meyer's time.
    A play like that might work in college because of the ability of the secondary in college being way behind to the pro level. I consider it the biggest disparity out of all positions in football. And the biggest reason why college QBs who get a reputation as the next great thing not panning out.
    It's why I thought Matt Leinert and Geno Smith was greatly over rated in college. The time it took to recognize a WR and to throw was too long. They could get away with it in college. But not pro level.
