      When Carson Wentz switched things up post-injury that's when things went wrong. I think that we should build a bit more of the offense surrounding Jalen Hurts. However, it would probably be less beneficial if they did it a lot as the ravens with Lamar Jackson. I can see Jalen Hurts being a good athletic quarterback and is definitely worth taking a good look at this season to see if he is a long term future qb.

    It is more difficult for a QB to be great throwing outside the numbers than throwing inside the numbers. Part of Jalen Hurts' problem was that last season, he had inexperienced, not so physical WRs. He protected them by not throwing much over the middle. Offensive concepts dictate whether there's openings in the middle of the field.

      Howie drafted Jalen first and foremost because he saw value in him where they selected him. Obviously the plan was not for him to start, and certainly not as early as 2020, but I don't think Howie makes that pick if he doesn't think Hurts at least had the upside to start in the league. For how much QB prospects bust, Hurts being average or at least borderline average in the league having been a #2 validates this, and given the opportunities they had to upgrade in the offseason, I continue to believe they think he can keep growing. Maybe he was never Plan A, but I think the front office always figured he could be a strong Plan B.

  • @CFBDeepDive
    @CFBDeepDive 2 роки тому +3

    Hurts has a lot of room for improvement, that's for sure. But the one thing I will say about him is that he's improved so much since he was a freshman at Alabama. I remember watching him back then, he could barely throw at all. He was basically just a running back playing QB. Then he transferred to Oklahoma and I was shocked at how much he had improved as a passer under Lincoln Riley. By all accounts he's been improving every year in the pros with Philly, too. Look at his rookie stats vs. his year 2 stats--clear improvement. I really think he's been getting better as a passer every year since 2019. I'm expecting that to continue for this season.

    • @Don-md6wn
      @Don-md6wn 2 роки тому +2

      Hurts really started improving as a passer in the season he backed up Tua at Alabama with Dan Enos as the QB coach. He started seeing the field better and throwing with more anticipation. That was his junior year, when he came into the SEC championship game against Georgia in the 4th quarter trailing after Tua suffered a high ankle sprain and won the game with 2 TD drives. I don't think Riley would have wanted him if he hadn't shown a lot of improvement as a passer that last year at Alabama.

    Hurts has 2 NFL seasons under his belt at age 23. Most of us can agree he has been inconsistent with his overall decision making, reading the defense, and more importantly, anticipating those quick hitters over the middle... He's only going to be 24 when this season starts. He's absolutely the leader and QB of this team right now. He still has a ton of upside, and he's got all of the "intangibles" to be a great leader. As a lifelong Eagles fan, of course I'm hoping for the best, but I'm going to have a lot more patience than most fans. We all forget sometimes just how young some of these guys are.... He's still a very young man thats still growing as a player, a leader, ect. As long as he continues to grow and get better wherever he can, he's not going anywhere. In fact, with his above average running abilities, he just needs to be a consistent above average passer, and he will be a top 7-10 QB in the league this year. He doesn't have to do anything crazy to keep his job. Just continue to get better and utilize your young playmakers. He doesn't need to necessarily carry this team. They are pretty deep at the skilled positions for a change..

    Bad take

  • @oldschoolcars3318
    @oldschoolcars3318 2 роки тому +1

    The point of view simply is myopic in that it seems to ignore coaching ability to de-emphasize weaknesses in game planning and matchups. The guy is doing fine and is progressing. seeing and reading remains his challenge yet you fail to see his developed tool kit otherwise is sufficient to march his team to the playoffs in 2022. Given a 2nd year smith, a Veteran Pascal, Speed in watkins and bulk in AJ brown, the receivers along with Goddert, Stoll, and Gainwell will help Hurts throw 4500 yards 22 passing touch downs, 450 Rushing yards, 9 running touchdowns and an NFC EAST title. Given their offensive style which was run heavy and likely will be slightly less so this year, he will come in somewhere around 360 completions on 580 Attempts which would put him at 62 percent and 7.75 per attempt: a modest improvement yet these are good stats for his second year and the increase to 7.75 will reflect the ability of AJ brown to rough up opposing corners coming off the line . Hurts' attempts could very well suffer to some degree if Hurts succeeds against better teams early on like the cards, cowboys, packers, and Titans, as Siriani will turn to the run to eat clock. Lurie/Roseman will attempt to showcase Minshew in early season blowout games in the hope of trading him for another 2023 Draft pick. If Hurts does not meet whatever the Lurie/Roseman Mendoza line is for the season, Hurts, may still be retained if he is showing signs of what the coaches feel is improvement in his game that are crucial to future success. Should Hurts stagnate they could still continue to develop late season gameplans to maximize his value for post season trading rather than focusing solely on wins for the team this year: Lurie and Roseman are too cheap to not get something for him if he does not pan out and Hurts does not have a drama queen temperament so if there is a divorce in the future it will likely be done without benching and drama as all parties are interested in maximizing their value. Since no one has an interest in Drama, I wonder what a modest Hurts success would look like followed by the Eagles trading Minshew, retaining Hurts and using their Round 1 picks to procure a top tier QB prospect?

      Please stop young yes, but talented as heck, qeuz was open so many times and hurts didn't even look his way 80% of the time. He seemed to focus on Dallas and if he didn't get open in time possibly look for slim reaper. But unlike even qbs that others think stink can turn their hips and rescan the other side of the field because already they have(should have an idea where they are cause of the call). Kirk cousins is a great example of a so so qb but at least can scan the whole field. Even in that wild card game quez was so open nobody was within 7 yards but the issue was not even not looking his way it was not pulling the trigger. I truly hope the game slows down for him because I've seen him when he's not racing in his head and he's more accurate than it seems on film. As far as Tom Brady waiting in the wings? Gardner ran the offense the way it should be run and looked great like 260 and 2 TD. He won't ever get the spot but still using the excuse we don't have anybody better so just keep him in there isn't an argument. If he struggles with this team that basically has stars at every position[miles needs to stay healthy].

    You make an often overlooked and important point about scrambling. Elite scrambling is often praised as a universal good. PFF is guilty of this. When a QB scrambles and makes a play it's always couched in a presumption that a pocket passer would have been sacked or had a throwaway on that play. Tom Brady was sacked at the lowest rate in the league (per game and per attempt) last year despite passing the most because he had the second quickest time to throw despite also throwing the most big time passes. When you see an elite scrambler make a play with their feet, it's not uncommon to hear the commentator say something like "Brady can't do that." or "that's a sack if Brady's back there". Except, no, clearly not. Because elite pocket passers like Brady buy time in the pocket and/or get the ball out on time and make clean throws under duress, which is why Brady takes sacks at a historically low rate.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 2 роки тому

      QB getting sacked in 3rd and mid/long passing downs is also in part their fault nowadays. As they are trying to extend plays in the pocket as best as possible to make something happen. Burrow is guilty of this but as you see in his film even in the 2nd half the season (counting playoffs), he was taking highly calculated risks on which defender he could evade to give himself an extra second to find Chase or his 2nd/3rd read in a play. Disciplined defenses are willing to play contain rushes vs scramblers who aren't great reading the field to just get them to put the ball up and hope the safeties and secondary read him to make the play.

      That's highly unlikely. Most nfl qbs aren't great their first year starting in the league. Adjusting to the game speed of the nfl and learning to read nfl defences usually takes a couple years. It's very premature to assume he's reached his ceiling already and doing so really shows a lack of understanding of the game. Between the weapons added on offence, the natural progression of another year in the league and the weak schedule they have this year It's most likely that hurts not only takes a step forward but a bigg one.

      Another terrific video on Hurts. I commented on your video of him last year, essentially staring the difficulties he will have to deal with because of his limitations but more importantly the structure of the Eagles organization. The eagles are an analytical franchise that believes strongly that you win by passing in the NFL. While this belief is correct, it can result in forcing poorly constructed rosters and quarterbacks who are not capable of throwing the ball with no cap on their attempts into bad positions. It is the reason Carson Wentz failed. He was/is not capable of throwing 40+ times a game, and certainly not when they couldn’t protect him due to an aging Jason Peters, Isaac Seumolo at left guard, an always injured Brandon brooks, Lane Johnson’s injury struggles, and a first round left tackle in Andre Dillard who couldn’t take over for Peters. Forcing a quarterback who doesn’t have great pocket presence and isn’t very cerebral to drop back 40+ times a game behind an offensive line that can’t pass protect is a recipe for disaster; especially when that quarterback is injury prone. Inevitably his eye level will drop out of fear of being hit, which is represented in a drop off in yards per attempt.
      This brings me to Hurts. The eagles offensive line is LEAGUES better then what they had in 2020 under Wentz, and certainly having receivers like AJ and Devonta are much better then what Wentz was working with. However Hurts still falls under the category of quarterbacks you don’t want throwing the ball more then 40+ times a game (you probably don’t want him throwing more then 30+ times a game). He is not cerebral, he lacks pocket presence and struggles resetting his pocket, he is not very accurate, and he is not a big quarterback so he struggles seeing over his linemen which lends to his inability to throw in the middle of the field. I would also like to mention that while Hurts does not have an extensive injury history, he is not as big as people seem to believe and he exposes himself to awkward hits inside and outside of the pocket.
      The biggest thing I would like to say is in relation to your comments regarding quarterbacks who leave the pocket too early and leave plays on the field. I am a Saints fan and I had the privilege to watch one of the greatest duos in the NFL’s history in Sean Payton and Drew Brees. I hold Payton in the highest of regards and almost all of my knowledge and understanding of football can be attributed to them. But in the tail end of his tenure the New Orleans, when he was touting Taysom Hill as the next franchise quarterback, he would talk about how important it is to have a quarterback that can and will operate outside of the pocket A.K.A. Outside of the structure of the offense.
      Alex, you put up different plays on your channel, do you think any of those plays that the coaches drew up were ever intended to be executed NOT in compliance with the way they were drawn up? No coach in the history of football at any level has ever drawn up a play with the hopes that it would fail and the quarterback would be forced to operate outside of the structure. Every play ever drawn up has been designed to SUCCEED, not to fail. A perfect play would executed exactly as it was drawn up every time. Obviously it is unrealistic to say that it is a possibility to be perfect on every play (no one wants a Mike Glennonesque statue under center), however Super Bowls are won three ways offensively (for the most part): 1. Threw the air 2. In the pocket 3. Over the middle of the field
      I’ll conclude this obnoxiously long comment by saying that yes, Jalen has improved from his time at Alabama and even between his first and second season in the NFL. However those improvements have been incremental at best, and he plays for a franchise that values a quarterbacks ability to carry the team on his back THROUGH THE AIR, not on the ground. And that franchise won’t hesitate to replace their quarterback when they feel like he can’t do that for them, which is the exact way Jalen found himself to be the Eagles starter.

    Plenty of one read QB’s in the league, most of them on the bench or practice squad. Having the best o line in the league and his leading the league in time until he throws (and it’s not from the pocket either) tells you all you need to know and it’s not good

      @@jonpoetical I don’t believe they are one read qb’s but rather are similar to Drew Bree’s or Brady who scan the entire field and never take their eye off of downfield. Hurts has one of if not the best o line in football so SHOULD be able to stay in the pocket to get better longer completions but opts to scramble if his main read is covered. Not a good long term habit for longevity.

      @@jonpoetical we can agree to disagree I think the difference between their squads and ours (before DeVonte) is their receivers don’t struggle to get separation off the line and actually get open. Makes life a lot easier. You can’t deny that he unnecessarily scrambles when he should be staying in the pocket. Pocket qb’s win superbowls. I might add that he has a reluctance (according to the video I watched today) to throw over the middle and apparently they say AJ Brown feasts on crossing routes so he best learn to be patient and learn to throw there or we will be drafting one of the top qbs this next draft.

      @@dennisfyfe920 Thank you for making my point. It's EASIER to read when you have receivers that get Separation. These Quarterbacks aren't Brady in the pocket. Devonta at times has his struggles as well. With that said, Mobile QB'S win Super Bowls as well. But that goes against the narrative. The Eagles don't Need Hurts to be a 4000 yard passer next year for them to go deep. The Eagles had 1 4000 yard passer. Probably would have a few more if McNabb didn't get Hurt. With that said, the Eagles need balance. That's the reason why they won the Super Bowl. Not because of this High Octane passing offense. Does Hurts bail early? Yes! That has to change. Do I expect a 180 from that, no! That's not realistic. Just like these expectations of growth! There's a misnomer thinking that only 5-10 Quarterbacks are capable of winning a Super Bowl. Which is the furthest thing from the truth. You can be in the 12-15 range and win Super Bowls.

    i think the fact that they got A.J. Brown almost solidifies the fact that Hurts will improve throwing over the middle. If he doesn't do it right away A.J. has his ear as a close friend and wont hold back behind the scenes, im sure of it.

Siriani and him took to long to start learning how to run the ball and learned how to stop pulling the ball every "option" play. He isnt good, he a walmart lamar.

    The problem is you clowns keep comparing him to a regular QB. He will never be a 400+ yard passer. He's gonna be a 250 plus 70 on the ground QB. This man has unfair criticism on him since day 1 due to the Carson Wentz situation. You can't punish him for Carson. You're treating him like a girl treats a new boyfriend who had a previous bad boyfriend. The man is paying for Carson crimes.

    You’re exactly right about AJ Brown. As a Titans fan I’ve been wondering how he will do in a different system. This potentially answers that question. He’s incredibly gifted physically but he has made his living off of in breaking routes on play action, when the LBs panic over thinking Henry is getting the ball and leave the middle wide open. It will be interesting to see what happens for him

    I don't think there is anything abour Hurts's situation wherein 2022 being a make-it-or-break-it year is absurd. Roseman and Laurie know what a successful running QB looks like (McNabb) and are aware that QB development isn't always linear. I think the team has done a good job showing faith in Jalen even while acknowledging he needs to improve to be the long-term guy. I think the team and Jalen himself will maximize his abilities.
