This week’s film breakdown analyzes the Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Kyler Murray as he heads into his 4th season. Murray is an incredible player capable of doing just about anything he wants on the field, but the Cardinals have routinely fallen apart in the second half of the season, most notably in the wild card against the Rams. What are the issues plaguing Murray and this team? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Kyler Murray.

in 2020, Robert Saleh completely broke down the Cardinals offense by bringing constant pressure through the right side, forcing Kyler to scramble to the left where he isn’t as good. Every team should follow this formula imo
But can't he just set his protections to the right side then????
@@tumelomatsela7941 in theory yeah lol idk, Kliff Kingsbury isn’t exactly the best at adjustments
Yeah ok...the reality is the Cards beat the 49ers more often than not..
So bring pressure to the quarterback's dominate side and he's worse when scrambling and throwing across his body? That isn't exactly something new.
@@maddenairraid9667 I remember when the Bills managed to flush Kyler out and to the left, making him throw across his body. Considering the play was named the Hail Murray and was the best play of the year makes me think this isn't exactly a 100% foolproof plan...lmao

This isn't just a short QB problem. Randall Cunningham had the same problem early in his career. Instead of stepping up in the pocket and letting his offensive line do their job he got antsy and had a bad habit of bolting out of the pocket. This is one of the issues that a lot of really athletic quarterbacks face is reining in there instinct to use their athletic ability over being calm in the pocket.

Wilson as well.

@@undericesinger Btw good point about big bodied QBs not sliding…I feel it’s an ego thing where they can take on anyone
The cardinals need to do what the saints and Seahawks did with Bree’s and Russ. They have to roll him out the pocket more on play action. One it can help him see the field better and two it fits his strengths, typically on a play action roll out you are passing deep which is what Kyler is great at and if nothing is open he has the speed to take off with it and pick up a ton of yards.
Brees is a much different guy than Russ. he played with a lot more timing and anticipation, has much less raw arm talent but much more ability to read and play within the system. I'm not sure their play styles translate. If you're a Cardinals fan, you want to see Murray go the way of Brees this year, and go hard. His play currently seems extremely Russ-influenced. It will be interesting see if this year Russ can adapt to an offense that requires more reading, quick throws, and staying within structure bc he's traditionally a guy playing outside of it, much like Murray. He has so much more experience, though, and breaks pocket less often and is less antsy than Murray, though. (My amateur analysis.)
@@smoothkid765 i just read this whole comment and thought you made pretty good points. Thats why the last sentence killed me, good to have some self awareness 😂😂😅
Kyler is far more dangerous than Russ and I’m a niners fan. I expected Russ to leave when the going got tough
@@jnastyyeet4627 he's not though. He's much more predictable, I think.
@@jnastyyeet4627 Murray is definitely the better athlete he’s faster, and appears to be stronger just going based off looks. I think compared where to Russ was going into year 4 Kyler is the better individual player just looking off the numbers. I think we might be at that point where Kyler is better then Russ or approaching it. When both qb’s where fully healthy last year Kyler looked better and more dominant. Even when both clearly weren’t 100 percent Kyler still looked better. I agree with what you are saying I do think he could be a better leader he definitely isn’t the leader that Russ is and I think he could be a little more pac isn’t and less antsy because it always looks like he is looking for the big play he passes deep a lot and is more explosive then Russ but Russ knows when to hit his check downs or take what the defense gives him instead of forcing something but that is something Kyler can get better at and to be fair to him most young qb’s are like that. If we want to be fair to his play style as well in defense of it no one does is it better then him ever since he’s come into the league he’s been one of the best deep passers and he is always a home run threat both on the ground and through the air. Enough of me going on about how great Kyler is tho.
Zach ertz was wide a** open on so many of those plays 😂 more than the one you mentioned like every single one with Zach in it he's wide open. could have had an amazing season if K1 just sees him.

I'm a huge Russ Wilson fan! Over the years I've noticed that he would miss wide open receivers in the middle of the field and was basically to the fact he was 5"10, when the OL and DL are averaging 6"4 and 300+ lbs, I'm sure it's hard to see things. I think this will be a common problem with shorter QB
Very well said
Quarterbacks use throwing lanes. This is a perfect example of the US metric system messing with people's heads. No one would say this if Kyler was 6 ft. If your QB can't see the middle of the field, the middle of your OL is probably breaking down. The Seahawks have always struggled to build the interior of the OL and that is especially important for shorter QBs. But also it's not as much of an issue as you make it out to be.
@@Smooth258
Everyone knows there are throwing lanes. I've watched Russell Wilson since his rookie camp in Seattle and felt he would be a good QB, I didn't realize he would become HOF QB, much respect. The 1 issue is the under utilization of the middle field, he would miss EASY wide open throws and I've come to realize over the years is his height. When I play basketball, I play point guard and I stand 5'11 ft and I have hard time seeing people when the many of the defenders are 6'2++. It's a fact and not a criticism of RW.
@@Smooth258 I think this heigh stuff is hilarious. 5”11 Wilson won a Super Bowl. 6’0 Brees won superbowl and will be a first ballot hall of famer. Kyler Murray and Bryce young are too short though at 5’10 1/2. They are 6 ft in cleats btw.

Before I watch the video. I always thought that teams adjusting to the style of offense would expose them, but granted I am not sure at all what that would involve. Something tells me it's safeties over the top or backer underneath perimeter routes.
i don’t totally disagree, but he’s actually fairly accurate throwing over the middle. they don’t do it often but part of the is by design to help clear room to run. And every QB has a flaw or things they are better at than others, kyler may have to deal with reduced vision in the pocket but he’s done that his whole career and he still is ridiculously accurate when he’s healthy and can make a bunch of throws downfield and timing routes only a handful of guys can do on a regular basis
Statistically he's very solid over the middle, he just barely throws there. I put up a heat map in my community tab to illustrate
Taller, pocket passing QB's win Super Bowls, with rare exceptions. Shorter, scrambling QB's are entertaining during the regular season.
The ratio of pass only QBs who have been drafted and failed to win a Super bowl is far higher than scrambling QBs. Outside Brady every passing QB in NE failed to win a SB, like every franchise, which far outnumber rushing QBs they teams have had. It’s a simple numbers game. If the ratio was anywhere close, and the rules weren’t made to favor the passing game and scoring, you’d have more successful scrambling QBs.
@@antcantcook960 But they aren't, and you don't. Running Qbs don't win rings. I've been watching it happen for years in Philly. Guys like Vick saw way more success after they learned to be pass first, and no running Qb (besides maybe Steve Young and Wilson, both who only run as a last resort) have won SB rings
That’s because most QBs are tall QBs. Both of the best short QBs of the last generation in Wilson n Brees won Super Bowls.
He looks like a child who stole a popsicle in the freezer when he not supposed on those scramble plays
😂 bruh I like your titles and I think your intros are underrated

You know I thought this would be a problem looking at him coming out. Its telling that the start of his career was better than the latter before defenses adjusted to take away the outside throwing lanes. His success depends entirely on him being the BEST athlete on the field and while that not hard at 21 what's that going to look like at 27 after a couple injuries and age?
Kyler isn’t even in his athletic prime yet lol. And he has beaten team from the pocket. He was really good at throwing the ball I’ve the middle last szn

My man Kyler just wants to ride some rides 😂
I mostly agree with you but the way kliff runs his version of the air raid he doesn’t rely on the base concepts enough which has all the concepts to attack each level of the defense i see what you’re saying about kyler bc of height he can’t see those underneath concepts but i remember watching a texas tech game in 2017 or 2018 and his scheme was working flawlessly in the first half getting 29 pts but the second half the offense couldn’t score
I don't think Kliff can run his staple concepts cause of Kyler's play style. I charted only a handful of Mesh concepts in the ~5 games I studied and I think that's cause Kyler won't throw the crossers over the middle
@@AlexRollinsNFL i disagree on that bc during his tenure at oklahoma they ran a lot of mesh & variations of it plus there was a game against the lions where they did run it a few times but the lions saw it coming bc of presnap alignment & game planning

@@Chrisd0ntmissif u can’t win with kyler at qb, then that’s sad
@@dylanpeterson3513 Kliff couldn’t win meaningful games with Brady at QB
Building an offense that relies too much on alerts is both arrogant and unsustainable. Yes, you can hit them but some days you won’t and you have to scheme to win. You’ve got to develop a team. Kliff doesn’t regardless of what the records say and that’s why all his teams fall apart on the back half.
It's also a horrible way to develop a QB since at some point you won't have the D Hops outside to win
Protection upfront is key
Dang this was good

At the end of the day for a QB height matters. Size matters. Russell Wilson, who's an all time great, prefers to throw outside the numbers for a reason.
When it comes to short QB's we need to appreciate Drew Brees(who's taller than you think at 6'0) even more for being a 1 of 1.
People want to show that the experts are stupid for thinking there are necessary height thresholds for QBs, but in reality to be great you need to be a certain height unless you're an absolute unicorn
@@AlexRollinsNFL Sadly K1 is as close as your gonna get to a unicorn, its crazy that the guy can convert a 3 and 16 down the middle against the Vikings to kirk but can't do that again for the rest of the year

@@Nazim909 The best weapon for 99% of NFL QBs are on the outside. But like the video showed Kyler really struggles anticipating inside breaking routes.

Thanks Frenchy
Let's hope this is the year. Dobbs has entered the picture.
Hasn't this been obvious since he came into the NFL?
This video made me appreciate Kliff's offense more than Kyler. I wasn't really a Kyler fan when he was drafted and thought Rosen should have been given at least one more year.
But my goodness, I could see RG3 run this offense and just kill it. If the Ravens want to trade Lamar for Kyler, it would make me consider watching the Cardinals this year.
Great video again.
Thanks BL!
I figured out how to solve Kyler's problem seeing the middle of the field...
Get 7'2" TE's and WR's
Get Bol Bol outta the NBA
Once opponents realized he couldn't throw to the middle it was a pretty straightforward adjustment to work on the outside. This adjustment was a large part of the second half collapse of the Cards. He's very talented, but if he can't use the middle he'll never be a consistent winner.
Teams always figure it out the second half ...but then always forget it the first half of the next season?
I love the new music
Thanks my man! I need to find more
Alex are you an NFL scout? Or are you a hobbyist. I only ask because you see the game like a pro, and know so much terminology. Big fan of the channel!
He should be a scout tbh, my Jets need him on the staff
Thanks Eugene! I've never scouted professionally for a team,
Poor Ertz. Dude is a stud and is going to get wasted in this system. At least he already got his ring.
It's crazy cause he actually got about 8 targets a game so he's a pretty sneaky fantasy option even though Kyler had so much trouble getting him the ball.
Fantastic Video!!! However I will say his over the middle of the field passing has gotten much better last year. In year 1 & 2 i'd argue he was maybe a bottom 3 medium passer but last year he really stepped up a little bit to I'd say an average but his height will always limit him from being elite in that range.
This was a great video. It would be awesome to see the antithesis of Kyler Murray. Like a Matt Ryan breakdown or another guy who anticipates windows and throwing so well that he himself couldn't possibly see a guy open in "the middle of the field" (bc he's not open YET) but knows to throw to a spot and trust his receivers and most importantly, knows how to stay in rhythm with the offense. I'm not sure there's an example in the modern NFL that is both short in stature but also plays with anticipation. Brees was/is probably the closest I can think of. you CAN teach shorter guys to play like this (look at drew brees with his underwhelming arm but elite IQ and anticipation/ film study turning him into a 1st ballot guy) by teaching them to play with anticipation. A guy that's so short can't see the receiver but he can still deliver a ball to the space that the stretched defender vacates, trusting his guy (in kyler's case, Ertz a top of the line guy) to be in the right spot. This is what preseason is for. And if he's not growing in this dept by year 3, he probably never will. Don't pay Kyler.
I think playing ertz out wide to go to the center will make Kyler trust him more. And having the WR2 be placed in the tight end spot but go wide from there will help Kyler a TON. He needs to trust ertz. And having him start wide so Kyler can see where he goes might actually make it easier for him to trust ertz
Thanks Randal! I think in previous years I had a bias towards the pocket/ in structure style QB that I've worked to overcome. It made me overvalue Tua coming out cause of how good he was playing with good timing, manipulating defenders with his eyes etc.
@@AlexRollinsNFL ideally you get a guy that can both stay in the system and then play outside of structure when necessary. but that's Aaron Rodgers unicorn shit.

, this video itself is pure cap there’s countless off plays where Kyler hits the middle
The reason Kyler can’t stand in the pocket and hit the middle like Drew Breeze is because the Cardinals are weak up the middle. When, they did have a productive run game in 2020 it was built on tricks not muscle. You can’t throw down the middle until you run up the middle.

In 2018 the Cardinals were 3-13. In 2021 the Cardinal's record was 11-6 in 2021, a winning season. Kyler Murray took the Cardinals from loser to winner.
He's definitely a good QB
Defenses have figured out Kyler. The Ram's game showed that a back-up QB can hit receivers over the middle and on long routes. This is not in Kyler's playbook. Defenses simply wait for the screens and short routes that Kyler can throw. Pressure Kyler and he will run.
Also, unless the o-line and judgement is perfect, KM is going to wear down every season. He's 5'10"? Where? on the International Space Station in zero G? He looks 5'8. On the field he looks like someone's kid wandered out there.

People seriously need to stop comparing the Mouse(listed as 5'10" but more like 5'8") to Wilson(5'11") and Brees(6'0"). Brees at 6 foot already needed to stand on his toes to see receivers over the middle, Wilson has the deepest QB drop of anyone a going. Murray is at minimum 2 inches shorter than either one maybe up to 4 inches shorter and those two already have issues over the middle due to their height. Murray will get Kingsbury fired this year and then everyone will see what the real issue is. Signing Murray to this long term deal will also get Keim fired as well, and anyone who follows the Cards knows that it was the owner, Bidwell, that really wanted Kylar "Tiny Dancer" Murray.
What's the difference between arm talent and arm strength ?
Arm strength is raw power/ ability to push the ball deep, arm talent is the ability to layer throws in between defenders with velocity/touch with velocity
@@AlexRollinsNFL Thanks
This actually explains why they don’t work his favorite receivers into different routes in the middle of the field
Exactly! It's so obvious when you see it.
I guess my dumb solution would be to wear lifts. Yeah, anything more than a couple of extra inches would likely be impossible given he'd have to remain mobile, but it would at least put him at 6ft. I think if they were properly designed and fitted, he could practice in them and get used to it. I had to wear some for shin-splints my junior year, and while it was weird at first, I became accustomed to it and was able to play in them, just fine. Of course, I played line... so there's that.

This can work, ONLY IF Cardinals have a great running game, otherwise it will never produce a team that's a SB contender. Go watch games where Cardinals ran the ball really well, they destroyed the opponents like 49ers,Browns,Titans,Rams...
Not surprised on the run game portion. I think Kliff's best strength isn't his application of the Air Raid concept but rather, the creative ways he makes the run game work in different formations. When they get running the pass game comes easy with Kyler and the defense has to pick their poison. But yeah without that run its easier for the DC to scheme things to make Kyler beat them as a QB with his rhythm and anticipation. Something he's shown in short stretches but not the the entire season. Not surprised why Kyler gets in early MVP talks around week 7~11 but when the Cards sputter towards the end of January, he gets out of that discussion.
@@t4d0W i don't know what happened to Kyler,It's like he makes up his mind before the snap (especially if he sees 1 on 1) and on 3rd & short he will just chuck the ball down the sideline, when he can easily get a 1st dumping it to TE or RB or even use his legs, His rookie year he was going thru progressions carving defense up. Kliff has to focus on running the ball because it benefits everything from OL to Kyler to Defense. Coming out dinking & dunkin using hurry up and going 3 and out puts Defense on the field way too long and leaves Kyler frustrated. And Cardinals are not built to play from behind,if you get them down It's over.
I’d like to see how Bill Belichek or Kyle Shanahon would utilize Murray. I don’t think Kliff is a very good coach.

It was the Raiders cause I'm from Oakland, but then they left. Now I just kind of like the best players/ best teams but don't really have a rooting interest in any one team, I just want to see the best ball. Bummed the Raiders left 😡
Makes you appreciate guys like Drew Brees a even more
I think Drew opened the door for a lot of these short kings, but they don't have what Drew did to make them great. Incredible athletes, good QBs, but I'm worried if they have the ceiling of being great like Drew
@@AlexRollinsNFL I love your videos. What in your opinion does Brees have that these other short qbs don't?
@@kameronsmith1531 Thank you Kameron! Many things, for one Brees played perfectly within the system/structure of the play better than any QB to ever have done it. In terms of vision, if you watch closely he would literally crane his neck almost like he was trying to put his chin on a tall table (so he could see over his OL as well as possible). The Saints also invested in Centers and Guards so he could have space in between him and his line.
I've tried to point this out to my fellow Cardinals/Murray fans but some people are just not willing to listen. They point out his qb rating on medium range passes over the middle is above league average and I try to tell them it's true but also a bit of a mirage. When Murray misses over the middle he tends to miss high and you pointed out exactly what I've seen, he doesn't throw over the middle a lot. His qb rating is good over the middle because he doesn't take that many shots and leaves yards on the field too often. I hope he gets better, been a Cardinals fan since they came here in 88 but still not a believer in Kliff. Still feels as though Bidwell and Keim think they were just so much smarter than everyone and it's obvious over the course of the season just how many questionable calls Kliff makes. He would have these great plays he pulled out early in the season then on 4th down calls he gets tight.
thanks James, good eyes brother. Some of Kyler's metrics are skewed cause he'll roll out and run around, then find a guy over the middle 8 seconds into the play
Yea. My problem with this theory is Kyler's issue's the big play. He's impatient, but he can see what's going on
Same issue with Russel Wilson
Exactly
alex you should do a video on if the critics of russell wilson are right about him declining.
I definitely plan on doing a Russ video. I think he'll have a great year, but haven't dove into his tape from last year yet
@@AlexRollinsNFL awesome im pumped and i love ur content.
@@Jsch23 Thank you Joe
Something you should add is theories on how they can solve this issue then
I don't see anything in this video that suggests Kyler can't see over the middle. Even the first example you showed, he was clearly looking at him but hesitated and his drop was deep enough to see over the line.
Imagine Madden's QB vision with Murray, it would just be two slim cones pointed in opposite directions like his eyes with no vision in the middle.
😂😂 love this
Imma send this to Kyle Shannahan!!
Its the DeAndre Hopkins effect.
Just out of curiosity, if you had to pick one NFL team to root for on game day, which team would that be?
I was a Raiders fan until they left my home town, then I was kind of a Browns fan but then they signed Watson. Now I just kind of root for the best players/teams so I can see the best ball
@@AlexRollinsNFL no evidence against watson
Comparing the start of a college season to the end of a college season is not the same at the pro level. The competition for big conference schools is much better at the end of the season when they start with FCS and D2 schools to tune the team.
Ertz should’ve still been an eagle just saying
I just saw your video of Russell Wilson not seeing the middle of the field. It's true. They're too short. You never saw Big Ben missing guys like that, or Tom Brady.
This is why the cards aren't extending him early and he is completely terrified by it. Over the long haul I think Kenny Pickett will have a much more successful career!
You had me until the second half
Cardinals are gonna extend him and that’s a bad take lol.
Lmao that Kenny pickets comment came out of left field
Why don't the checking staff look at Shawn Payton offensive blocking scheme they used for Brees. Gaps, n shot gun and catching from the back field
Those down lineman in their stance stand taller than he does straight up. That man is not 5’10” or he would be as successful as Wilson. The cardinals will never win a SB with Murray, he’s too short.
Is this Russell problem too? Most of his targets or deep or on the sidelines.
Yes! Check out my recent Russ video
10:08 ….. dammmnnn
In madden im the opposite. I see the middle of the field very well
Okay Rollins, you show how Kliff is a one trick pony coach who gets figured out every season and never changes his play style or approach. And then make it sound like it's Murray's fault because the dude is short?
You are right, the team is built around Murray's play style, because he is gifted beyond belief with talent. That's what happens, you build around a franchise QB, every successful team has done it. So with everything said (even your video included), why does this video focus so much on Murray and his Height, when all evidence shows that Kingsbury either can't, or won't adapt his play calling? This video should be called "Kliff handicaps talent again"
Because I think Kyler's play style limits what any offensive coach would be able to call, so I'm not pinning it squarely on KK. I'm also not saying KK is by any means a great coach, but I'm putting more of the blame on Kyler in that specific area
He's nowhere near "gifted beyond belief" with talent bahahahahha
maybe add a RPO layer to it?
No one points out the obvious. The last time a top 10 paid qb won a super bowl was Steve Young over the chargers.
He's but a wee lad.
How many touch downs did Kyler leave on the table last year?
A lot! He actually has a pretty low TD% throughout his career which suggests he struggles to play in structure/ within the system
Welcome to the Russell Wilson experience. We had 10 years of the most simultaneously thrilling and rage-inducing QB play in Seattle. It's amazing when it works, but lemme tell you, after a half dozen years of watching easy 3rd down completions missed in favour of a low percentage alert route or a failed scramble, it wears on you.
He can see the middle his height kinda prevent him from making that throw it's easier to deflect his passing attempt and can turn into int's
I genuinely think Kyler's OL at Oklahoma was on average taller than the one he has with the cardinals, yet if you go watch that tape, vision wasn't nearly as much of an issue. Is it an issue where he genuinely can't see the players down the field, or is it more of a lack of being able to read defenses in the middle EVEN IF he can see them?
If you look at his resume, HS and TT it would suggest he knows how to run offense and read defense. However,I have wondered if the jump to NFL has shown his limitations
With quicker defenses in the NFL Kyler doesnt have the time to go through his reads and decide whether to throw or run before the Aaron Donald's of the league cause him to panic scramble. Kyler will still be good against slower bad defenses but he will always struggle against the faster good defenses especially in the playoffs. I dont see deep playoff runs for Arizona with Kyler.
