      As someone who likes RCHP more, and loves Anthony Kiedis as a vocalist, yeah, Anthony’s not nearly as talented. But then again, very few people can even hold a candle to Mike.

      I love Anthony and the RHCP but Mike is just vocally superior and their styles as are very different. The earlier FNM was definitely funkier from album to album or even song to song with FNM it changes. Instead of Anthony being jealous of their success, he should have been happy someone was trying to emulate him. (Mike was never emulating him but still)

  • @indegoraven
    @indegoraven 3 роки тому +254

    Mike Patton was NEVER trying to imitate RHCP. If you really get into there catalog you’ll see that while there may have been 1 or 2 songs all together that you could compare, FTM is a band unlike any other. You should really look into their history. There’s really no comparing the two. And this is coming from someone who knows both bands catalogs pretty well. And I agree with everyone saying that Angel Dust is a masterpiece!

      Anthony Keidis felt all intimidated by the From Out of Nowhere album but it didn't escalate or have any real substance until Mr Bungle went on tour with RHCP and they were taking the crowds every night. Anthony got all jealous and started talking shit about them and cancelled the rest of their shows with them because obviously Mike and anyone he works with is a million times more talented without even trying. So Patton threw that back with slight remarks here and there and then you have the infamous Halloween concert where they dressed like RHCP and played their songs while pretending to do heroin on stage. Don't fuck with Mike lol

    FNM was years ahead of their time. You can still go back and listen to their Angel Dust album and be blown away by what they were doing. Originally they were labeled as "art rock" which I always took to mean a genre unto yourself because no one could exactly pinpoint what they were doing. Epic was an early rap/rock fusion, Midlife crisis had elements of funk, they did a serious croony version of Lionel Richie's "Easy", and they were one of the few bands to cover Black Sabbath's War Pigs and make it something of their own. Multi faceted, exceedingly talented. For that chunk you love, try "Last Cup of Sorrow" from the Album of the Year release...

    FNM is one of the most unique bands in rock. They played with multiple styles, and it's apparent when listening to whole albums. Angel Dust, which contains Midlife Crisis, has thrash, pop, funk, industrial on it, and it's listened best as a whole album. Solo Mike Patton is even crazier, and just check out his other band Fantomas - it's off the charts bizarre.

      It`s FNM brighter 80's sound (with that Killing Joke vibe) and that sauce of irony that make us all love FNM.
      As much I love the Patton factor in FNM, you have to sacrifice something for the greater good, and in the most FNM way I think, they sacrifice their lighter side of Irony for the more acid, ambitious ways of of the genius of Patton. Fair enough.

    Hey guys, Great reaction. FNM is from San Francisco, and the beef was real with RHCP. Early FNM definitely had similar vibes to the Peppers, but they had big differences too. FNM has keyboards and a more metal oriented guitarist, and the Peppers have Flea, who is a funk master on bass. Mike Patton is a genius vocalist who can literally sing ANY style. I think early FNM with Patton had a RHCP vibe, but they are hardly derivative and when Epic blew up in 91, it was just the time for funk metal to shine. Check out more FNM and you'll see they are very much their own band. 🤘✡️🤘

      The bands are very different in total, but Mike Patton's mannerisms in the Epic video certainly look like they are taken directly from Kiedis. Since it was a break thru hit for Faith No More, Kiedis was worried that people would think he was copying Patton, and not vice versa. Of course, Patton didn't help things by playing a Halloween gig with his other band Mr. Bungle dressed as RHCP and intentionally butchering their songs.

    The horses were recreating someone being “Drawn and quartered”. This was actually a real sentence handed down back in the day. Probably symbolic of being pulled in many different directions at once. Which is sort of emblematic of the fusion of genres the band managed to blend; pulling listeners in different directions.

    So just to explain the beef with FNM and RChP, it actually was not about the music aspect. The bands came out around the same time 1983 or so. At around 1989 -1990 in the bay area there was multiple bands playing funk metal, such as Jane's addiction, mindfunk, living colour or mordred. The beef started in 1990 or something after the video for epic came out. Kiedis was told that FNM singer patton is imitating his moves. Patton at that time was finding his feet and his style, he and Chris Cornell would on purpose imitate their scenic behaviour and vocal ranges and competed in a friendly way with each other since they toured together. Fun fact FNM and RChP actually played together couple shows when Patton joined FNM in 1989. Patton said he didn't understand why kiedis is accusing of stealing his moves as he did what anybody did imitate moves from a hip hop video. The beef spiraled out of control in 1999 when Rhcp got patton's other band Mr bungle dropped from couple of festivals.

    FNM was doing the rap like rock before RHCP. Their original singer Chuck Mosley started it and Mike Patton had to do it because those songs were already in their library. FNM started 1979. RHCP started 1983.

    Patton is 1000 times the vocalist Anthony Kiedis is. Lol. RHCP are also kind of a one trick pony. FNM could play any genre, and have.

    • @Crunchatize_Me_Senpai
      @Crunchatize_Me_Senpai 2 роки тому +1

      Their one trick is really good, to be fair, or at least really unique, if we want to be objective. And there’s still a lot of range in that one trick. But FNM experimented a lot more, and of course, it’s just straight up fact that Mike is a better vocalist. I like RHCP a lot more than FNM, but I’d be literally delusional to call Anthony the better vocalist.

    I can’t believe I got like 50 comments down and didn’t see anyone correct [guy on the right] when he said Dave Navarro is the guitarist for RHCP. He was the guitarist for one album, and it was one of their biggest flops. The “iconic” guitarist for that band is John Frusciante. Also, Navarro had some beef with RHCP, too, after that album, but it’s water under the bridge now.

    After their original lead singer left, Faith No Man became Faith No More, and had a rotating cast of vocalists, including Courtney Love, a kind of live audition process, eventually picking Chuck Moseley as their full-time frontman from 1983 to 1988. After creative differences with Moseley eventually caused everyone to quit, the other members decided they wanted to go on together, but without Chuck. They drafted Patton later that year, and the rest is history.

    For location, Faith No More is from San Francisco. Red Hot Chili Peppers is from Los Angeles.
    As for the imitation, the song Epic got popular before anyone really heard of Red Hot Chili Peppers. That song is also considered one of the first rap-rock songs that Nu-Metal would eventually inherit. Higher Ground off of Mother's Milk (which was a remake) was Red Hot Chili Peppers first globally noticed song (as far as I remember) and released as a single later in the year than Epic was. If anything, they should be thanking Faith No More, not hating them. The rivaly didn't happen until later on.
    As for my favorite FNM song, I'd say Everything's Ruined; which is off of the same Angel Dust album that Midlife Crisis is on.

  • @businesscatlimbo

    The feud between FNM and RHCP started mostly due to Faith's song 'Epic", where Anthony Keidis claimed Mike Patton was ripping his style. I mean they both pioneered the funk rock sound in the 90s, so it's not one or the other that's stealing, since they both were really the originators of the sound. What REALLY kicked it off was with Mr. Bungle, Mike Patton's other band, and RHCP threatening to pull from shows involving Mr. Bungle. All because Bungle's album 'California' came out around the same time as RHCP's song 'Californication' almost 10years after the feud started.
    I think it's just Anthony being bitter. They saw Faith as rivals since they both had a unique sound and they were the first two funk rock bands that hit it big.

    FNM and RHCP both were started in 1982, with pre formation stuff going on before in both case. The rappy album Introduce yourself is from 1985, a full 4 years before RHCP's first album, and it already crossed the pond (I knew the album in /Europe/ at the time). FNM is from Frisco btw.

    Faith No More is from San Francisco. Further info into the Chili Peppers feud..... It is important to clarify that ALL OF THE OTHER MEMBERS OF CHILI PEPPERS LOVED FAITH NO MORE. It was solely Anthony Keidis who had the beef. So much so that he had one of Mike Patton’s other bands(Mr. Bungle) thrown off a festival tour cause he’s a fuckin premadonna.
    It is also worth noting that Faith No More started in 1979, and Chili Peppers didn’t start till 1983. So, if there is any rip off when it come to music style, Peppers ripped off Faith No More.
