I like the idea that emiya comes from the saber route so he only *sometimes* knows what's going on and other times he's just like *"WHAT THE FUCK THIS WASN'T IN THE MANUAL!?"*
Archer canonically comes from a timeline similar to the fate route. So it's not an abridged thing. Not exclusively anyway.
In my head cannon it’s the same Shirou from the fate route. Even before I saw the abridged version. Fate route Emiya suffering for all eternity is too good a tragedy to wave away.

@@ryanoconnell4063 It's not quite sentient, but it tries to prevent paradoxes. The HGW is one of the very few exceptions, and only because Rin actually used an artifact related to Archer (he kept the pendant that saved him through all his life) and because even Archer killing Shirou has barely an infinitesimal chance of actually erasing him from the Throne. At the end of the day, that's just Archer throwing a temper tantrum, and even he admits it.
Also, it's not really needed. The Counter Force acts all the time without killing everything on sight or needing to sell your soul for extra power. In FSN, Shirou and Rin are basically the agents of the CF, and only if they fail and humanity is at risk of extinction, it would deploy Counter Guardians, although the Grail may be powerful enough to block It.
Shirou in Fate's timeline may have failed... or he may have succeeded without needing to become a Counter Guardian. And in A timeline, he actually manages to reach Avalon, as per the new ending of Realta Nua (Saber deserved a happy ending of her own, in her own route, instead of just the one where she joins Rin's Harem XD).
It's not clear if he is alive when he manages or if he just reaches at the point of his death, as Merlin's prophecy goes something like "She must wait for eternity, without knowing if he is still searching, and he must search for all his life, without knowing if she is still waiting", but he doesn't sound like an old man, so either he is still alive and somewhat young, or after he arrives, he is at his prime. But seeing how it says that he has been searching for so many years he doesn't even remember the number, but still sounds like when he was 17, I'm gonna go with "he searched for all his life until he died, and he reunited with Arturia in Avalon, once again in his prime".

To be fair, from Archer's perspective, Rin's still fixated on Siro despite no longer being an asset after losing his only trump card (which was completely his fault) and is pretty much a burden. She was sort of asking for Archer to betray her.

@Tin Watchman I don't think so. I think she realized he was Shirou. I mean, he looks like an older version of Shirou with white hair. He's not even wearing Superman's magic glasses. But then there is the intimate info Archer knows about Shirou and all the hints that he knows all the people in his life, all the asides. I'd be surprised if she hadn't figured it out by now. More so here, as there have been multiple dialogues about that little secret in the abridged series.

I like the back and forth abridged archer seems to be having with UBW Shirou.
To begin with he just passively accepts that Shirou exists and delights in making his life hell because he assumes he's on the Fate route and his own fate is inescapable.
However after realising that A) he was able to avoid fighting Berserker and B) Medusa was killed by Kuzuki not Saber, he starts to realise that the timeline can be changed.
At first he races to save Shirou because it's Rin's desire, but upon having to hear Shirou flaunt the hypocrisy of his current ideals directly in front of him, decides to take fate into his own hands and END Shirou, and therefore prevent him from ever being created as a counter guardian.
However, after being corralled by Rin and seeing Shirou actually start to understand his position, he becomes more passive and actively heals Shirou because Saber is worried about him and he remembers loving her, but UBW Shirou doesnt and Saber doesnt either.
Now Archer has to see Shirou ignore what he wanted for himself right in front of him, and beyond that let Saber get stolen because he can't reconcile his beliefs.
It makes him going after Shirou and betraying Rin to do it so much more believable, because there are so many layers to their relationship now. Shirou isn't just Archer's past: he's becoming Archers most hated possible version of himself: an idealist who understands his ideals aren't working but persists in them anyway, overlooking the individuals he should be caring about to try and save an impossible majority that doesnt exist.
Actually, Archer comes from a reality where he never became very close to Taiga, Saber, or Rin. Also, Mouthwash has said that Archer does not come from the Fate route.
plvs_vltra they said he isn’t from DEEN FSN, they just used that footage since it’s the only adaptation of the route. Nasu himself has said Archer’s route is more-or-less the fate route but with some minor fuckups

Obviously the Spider is Shirou, but Archers description fits the whole series better than I thought.
Archer has been after Shriou since day 1, but in accommodating Rin and Saber has been more or less half assing it. One moment he's trying to kill Shirou to end it all and the next he's saving him for Rin or Saber's sake. Now Shirou has finally pulled the last straw: Saber is enslaved, Rin was put in mortal danger and all in service of his busted ideals.
And what's worse, it's also Archer's fault because if he'd manned up sooner and killed Shirou proper then Saber would be free, Rin would be safe (not having to protect Shirou) and Archer would be redeemed. But since he DIDNT everything that just happened was also his fault. "I made a real mess of things trying to get it, but I never actually KILLED that spider."
Writing is deep as fuck.

It's not really a redemption problem, right?
Archer vowed for an eternity at the service to (the spirit of) humanity after death, and is trying to get out of this eternal nightmare by creating a time paradox. This act is purely selfish from Archer, so not really a redemption...
[By the way, I don't even think that it is canon that his method would have worked if he succeeded. Archer certainly think so, but I don't know of any confirmation in canon.]
@@MoiMagnus1er Well, that was the original idea, but thanks to the genius's at project mouthwash it goes beyond that:
Archer of course is selfishly trying to end his suffering, but at the same time the whole reason he IS suffering is because Shirou (he) wanted to save everyone in front of him in the first place. That's why he hates Shirou; he could just kill him coldly without emotion if it was just to escape his fate, but just seeing Shirou pisses him off. This much is true in the actual series.
The abridged just went one step further: Shirou is now single-handedly responsible for enslaving Saber to a witch she hates, getting Taiga captured in the FIRST place because in Archer's timeline as Shirou (it runs pretty parallel to the original Fate) this shit never happened *deep breath* and then being powerless to stop Saber from killing him, then Rin, them presumably Taiga.
His desire to save everyone INCLUDING Medea has literally either enslaved or endangered everyone Archer (as Shirou) held dear. He's not just a walking embodiment of Archer's current suffering anymore: he's literally putting people in the present at risk because of his ideals.
That's why I'm saying it's also kind of Archer's fault. He's had chances to kill Shirou earlier but hasn't succeeded either due to lack of skill or because Saber/Rin would be hurt if he did, and now the worst possible outcome has occured. What's worse while he's under Rin's control, she'll never LET HIM kill Shirou, because she cares too much about him by this point.
The reason this all works so well is it actually serves to set up
*SPOILERS*
Archer betraying Rin and joining Medea far better than the original did in my opinion, at the very least the emotional stakes are more present. And this simple paragraph about killing a spider perfectly describes how he feels he's ruined everything in half assed attempts to kill the 'Spider' (Shirou) and that he's done playing around:
No matter what it takes, he's got to kill that spider before it hurts anyone else, not just for his own selfish satisfaction.
You forgot he tried to convince the spider that building its web will lead to a lot of deaths.

@FatedAwakening right, but that's why I gave it the leeway of being the main part of Episode 9. I actually have a feeling that they aren't going to draw out the Shirou is Archer thing and they'll probably streamline the other things similar to how the Rider/Caster/Kazuki thing was.

Because I can list more who _don't_ than more who have proper bows to even launch their swords from as "arrows" (Caladbolg and other swords in Archer's case here.) That they can toss around any form of projectile and be considered an Archer says a lot about the loosy-goosy way the Grail/Throne of Heroes treats the ranking of Heroes and what is considered a "True Knight Class."
As far as I know the Lancer Class has to, you know, actually use some form of a lance, and I've yet to see a Saber who pulls out a mini gun XD and somehow _isn't_ justified as an Archer what with those "projectiles."

I wasn’t to talk about how much I love this line for a momment, Seriously the show has been making fun of how broken Shirou is because of his hero dream all episode and for several episodes how it allows him to be manipulated or nearly gets him killed. However in this momment we see it shift in a positive direction, after losing everything, even his own power, with just one word, suddenly all the self loathing and doubt shirou was feeling after what happened gets pushed away leaving him filled with resolve and determination.
And Rin did it on purpose.

Just going to say this unironically: This is the single greatest abridged series out there.
Sorry TFS, sorry SWE, and sorry all you other groups and studios, but the work and dedication put into making these characters hysterically funny without belittling them is something that has not been done on this kind of level by anyone else out there. The dialogue, the pacing, the editing, it's all WAY too good for a parody show. Literally the only flaw of this show is that you have to watch three different series to fully appreciate this show, but let's be honest, most of us have done at least that much as Fate fans. Every character and persona of every scene is memorable, hysterical, emotional, or all of the above. Parodies aren't supposed to be this good. Rin losing her mind, Saber talking in slang, Shirou's obsession with pipes, each of these characters are ridiculous and amazing all at once.
Thank you Project Mouthwash for a truly spectacular project, and I'll be so sad to see it end. Just want you to know that all of your hard work is well worth it.

Okay this was one of the best episodes and I don't use those words lightly. This was amazing. I was hooked for the Whole video, start to finish, it was just out of this world. I just can't really articulate how great of an experience watching this episode was. It was fun to see Rin and Saber 'try' to be normal, their interactions were stellar, and the Bridge Encounter was just emotionally agonizing in the best ways possible. I'm just as torn up inside as they are, pun not intended with Shirou. Heck the scene with Caster and Kirei was just as amazing as the other little interaction portions, especially getting to see Cu Chulainn's Limerick Skills. Spear Mom taught him well. Can't wait for when Cu sticks it to Kirei. That'll definitely be great to see. There's obviously other scenes I can't wait for like Medea getting her Body pierced again, Jason Todd Vs. Batman, Heracles Vs. Gilgamesh, Just so much I can't wait to see. Thanks Project Mouthwash for your Hard Work in these Difficult Times
