Sunyata Episode 2: Buddhism: What is Emptiness | Pali Canon (The Teachings of Buddha)
The Meaning of Emptiness - What Did the Buddha Preach About Emptiness In?
    - "Emptiness" is a unique and specific concept within Buddhist teachings. No other civilization, system of thought, philosophy, religion, or science has articulated this concept apart from Buddhism. It transcends all religions, including "Buddhism" in its more ritualistic, popular forms.
    #emptiness #buddhism #pali
The Buddha perceived that no phenomenon in the universe or in the consciousness of any individual can exist independently, autonomously, and permanently. Every phenomenon that arises does so only through a combination of many causes and conditions, and the absence of even a minor and secondary cause or condition means that the phenomenon cannot occur. This demonstrates that all phenomena are composite and do not contain an independent, individual entity. The absence of an independent, permanent entity in all phenomena is referred to as their "emptiness" or Sunyata in Sanskrit and Sunnata in Pali.
This discovery by the Buddha is profoundly unique and transcendent, relating to the entire human understanding process-spiritually. Today, the concept of emptiness, along with other Buddhist concepts, continues to astonish thinkers, philosophers, scholars, and scientists across all fields worldwide.
For Buddhism, the application of this concept has played a crucial role in the practice aimed at ultimately helping humans escape from suffering.
What Did the Buddha Preach About Emptiness In?
Returning to the Buddha's teachings through the original sutras in the Tripitaka shows that they are concise, specific, and very practical, not laden with the argumentative nature of metaphysical philosophy. Therefore, to avoid misunderstandings about the definition of Buddhism and to better understand how the term "emptiness" (sunyata) was explained and perceived by the Buddha, we present here the meaning of "emptiness" according to original Buddhism, based on two Pali sutras: Culasuññatasutta (The Lesser Discourse on Emptiness, MN 121) and Mahāsuññatasutta (The Greater Discourse on Emptiness, MN 122) - considered two of the most important discourses the Buddha preached on emptiness.

My take on this philosophy of emptiness is simply to be yourself, rely on yourself, but first know what it is that you are relying on; and when you find that out, as the Buddha said in his final message to the Brotherhood, "Be a light unto yourself". Same thing my Daddy told me before he ascended, "Son, be your own man".
    peace and love,

New points of emptiness emerge from points of nothingness/time with interdependence according to logic. Many thanks. ❤❤

Emptiness is detaching your mind from the “grasping” of the 5 aggregates.

“Emptiness” is Energy which is Formless (Non-Material).
Materials (Form) including our physical body are made from multiple Elements which are made from Energy.
All Elements, which are Materials (Form), are just different manifestations of Energy (Formless).
Our Soul (Consciousness) is made from Energy which is Formless & Eternal…
    Our Creator is ENERGY

2:46 The "MN" after the sutta name does not refer to Minnesota but to Majjhima Nikaya, as much as the Minnesotans might have liked that the Buddha had preached somewhere around Minneapolis...
Also - most of the shunyata doctrine is held to be developed by the later Madhyamikas...and Mahayanists. Those two suttas in MN refer to emptiness more literally...🙏🏼🙏🏼

NOT, Shunyata was quite prominent in the Tipitika!
Anatta Lakhana Sutta, Phena Sutta are just a few others.
Mahayanists however were the greatest practitioners of Shunyata and understood this as a core teaching.

    • @amaximus4664

Anatta lakkhana sutta is not about emptiness, it is mainly about soullessness. And soullessness is not emptiness. Emptiness is found teaching of Mahayana Buddhism but not in therawada buddhism. Therawada is the oldest Buddhism than Mahayana Buddhism.

Suffering is a man-made concept, it aligns with the economic structure that we all live in, from the dawn of time, those with more money take our freedom, to believe in pure reality and to stand on the outside of this concept, is to be free.

    • @Jacks-tj9mb

I agree and disagree with this statement. Suffering is not man made. Suffering is the root of all life. It would be hard to argue that animals in nature do not suffer because they do. An animal being eaten alive does suffer. An animal that is sick and devoured by flies and bugs does suffer. Do they understand suffering in the same way as us? We will never know this. But you know this suffering when you see it in all forms of life. It is not man made. We as humans believe this is all about us, that everything we experience is ours alone to experience, but this is wrong. We are just another animal in nature. That’s all we know.
I agree with the rest of what you say. Best of luck in your search.

"Emptiness and Existence are one not two. All dharmas are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble or a shadow, like morning dew or like a lightning flash that appear, spring up in the very spot where they also come to an end.
If you ask Buddha what's emptiness, Buddha will speak about the reality of lives.
If you ask the Buddha about the reality of life, the Buddha will speak about emptiness.
What is delusion and what is illusion?
The Buddha told us, phenomena is an illusion. Everything that appear before us is an illusion. Nothing is real.
    Life is indeed a dream.
When your thoughts cease or when you die, all existence disappeared.
Deluded person has no wisdom to understand the truth.

If this is true, "When your thoughts cease or when you die, all existence disappears. " Lord Buddha would not spend 45 years preaching what he learned. What do you think?

    Emptiness is potential of manifestation.
Empty of cup is potential of holding water.
    Within Emptiness everything manifest.
    Everything is dependent nature.
Depend leads to change, change leads to temporary. Temporary leads to impermanence, impermanence and Emptiness is one nature.

For those who have no stores,
    who know their food aright,
    for those whose resort is

U should not attempt to expound Emptiness. From what u spoke, it is clear that u are not qualified to explain Emptiness bcos people who understand Emptiness do not explain it the way u did. Still, it is a reasonable effort.

emptiness is the nature of any experience you have..your denial is result of not seeing it..means you are ignorant and deluded...where in this world you can claim in ur expereince as not being empty of real essence...its all changing yet you still think its not empty..even ur thoughts alone is empty..

On the contrary it is very relevant to this very life. The understanding of the truth of sunyata or emptiness makes you not mentally attached to anything: thoughts, emotions, belongings, ideologies etc. U can have thoughts, wealth, health etc but U have to understand all of them are composite and fleeting. Goods decay, thoughts change, emotions change, everything changes. The root of suffering is the deluded belief that everything exists independently and you resist any change.

Those who are brought up in Buddhism or Christianity will always say that is so because they fall back on their teachings. But if all religions are taken away, where does one stand? Can we still find out?

    • @toniesan
      @toniesan 3 місяці тому

@@friendsnote.1013 of course someone can. Buddhism is only a label and it is not necessary. You can be an Christian, moslem, Hindu or even an Atheist to understand this truth. Even at the highest level of practice, we shake off all identities and see everything as it is. Buddhism is philosophy and everybody has their own route to understand the truth of life. There is no such dogma that you have to believe and hold on. It is only a way to see life as it is so we can realize that suffering is self dependent. Once you have changed your paradigm based on the most suited way for yourself, you can break off the gripping shackles of self-induced sufferings. Let's take an example: can we find satisfaction and happiness in a luxury mansion? We can't because those people living in shuts can feel happy too while the rich can still feel empty living in their houses. Buddhism teaches us the realization that everything is not absolute and it all stems from the way we think. Once you have come to terms with this reality, no matter whether you confess a religion or not, whether you are rich or educated or not, you can always feel content. That's all.

In rigpa one truly sees emptiness and the truth. Life then is so much easier and full of joy. But if you are only wanting to make samsara feel joyful, you will never succeed in that, and live in a state of dis-ease
