I´m a practicing Buddhist from Sweden. Outside my window, the snow is falling in droves. The snow lights up the darkness. Everything looks like a fairy tale. Going out to my park bench next to an old medieval church for an hour of deep meditation. I love Buddha's teachings

I am a therawada buddhist in sri lanka and things I have learnt and realized are endless. I am a biology student and lot of the time religious concepts doesn't add up with the science I learn. But buddhism was different. Things I learnt from buddhism, things that are in my limits meaning things I am able to experience from senses I have as a human always add up. I encourage anyone who wants to learn it. Meditation is not the only thing that helps. teachings go way deeper in to your mind and is truly amazing. Brings so much peace.

I have been to some of the villages in Bihar where the Buddha taught the four noble truths. One of them is Bhatgawan mispronounounced as Bandagawan in the Mahaparinirvana story. Very educative. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

This video is educative. About the eight fold path, I know where the Buddha taught this. Many of the ancient sangarams are today villages. There is one unique village name which is NAWADA meaning eight promises. These villages are common in Bihar. Eight promises can be translated as the eight fold path. It seems these villages had the pleasure of the Buddha preaching to the distant ancesters of the present day villagers, ‘The eight fold path’. Infact Sariputra became an Arhat in a sangaram called NAWADA in Vaishali. Nawada means the eight promises.

A religion is supposed to be a pathway to divinity.
Some religions are based on BELIEF.
They lead to darkness, ignorance and enslavement.
Some religions are based on EXPERIENCE, SELF-REALISATION. They lead to ENLIGHTENMENT, KNOWLEDGE and NIRVANA.
The former is enforced by the sword with the ulterior motive of world domination .
      The latter is mainly adopted.
I too am born catholic. I was disillusioned. I was intrigued with Buddhism and sanatan dharma.
Yes, it is blissful and peaceful.
Now, I am able to appreciate the message of Jesus. But, the organization is responsible for the enslavement.

Spiritual texts are NOT literal in meaning. They are allegorical, esoteric, metaphorical, yatharth. They are NOT to be understood or interpreted by logic, rational thinking or scholarship. They have to be EXPERIENCED, SELF-REALISED. WISDOM is the prerequisite.
Religious leaders either deliberately or out of ignorance MISINTERPRETED the scriptures.

Theravada Buddhism specifically delves into such depths of the human psyche and realizes such unimaginable truths that I'm awestruck every single time I come across it. It is far more to-the-point than its more modern counterpart, Mahayana, which has taken upon itself the methodical and extensive usage of mythology and other magical concepts.

Converting is what religions do , but Buddhism is not a religion as preached by many , you don't need to become a Buddhist , u can just become aware and implement its teachings in your Life remember Buddha never wanted to make a religion, Leaders destroy the followers and followers destroy the leaders. You have to be your own teacher and your own disciple.

This is a very nice video series and is informative on some of the Buddhist schools. It took me on a journey down memory lane as I studied and practiced the Dhamma venturing through the schools as I developed in practice and study and even pilgrimaged to Tibet. The experience was once in a lifetime and absolutely breathtaking. To give a true overview of the Buddha's teachings however, one MUST also include the Lotus school in this video series. The Lotus Sutra is the core principal of all the Dharma teachings. Although helpful, the teachings prior to the Lotus Sutra are elementary in the actual scope of Buddha Dharma and the Universal Law. It is beautiful. Please allow me to interrupt. I feel Buddhists should know this. As a Romanian Buddhist, I practise aspects from all the schools. Mindfulness and philosophy are very important, leading to enlightenment. Compassion and equality are also core values, but worshipping is not something for the Buddhists. Mantras and tantras are almost as powerful as meditation. I also practise Vedic Chanting, even though this one is a Hindu practice. I am also a Christian, I believe in the resurection of Jesus Christ, who was a pure manifestation of the Divine Potential on Earth, truely a conscious offspring of God. I basically have a new school of Buddhism and a new neo-protestant sect. More than that, I have a whole new religion just for myself, a cult of love, peace, mindfulness and divine compassion and faith.

In Buddhism, there are 4 types of practical abilities: 1. Sotapanna, 2. Sakadagami, 3. Anagami, and 4. Arhat. ^^ The details must be studied thoroughly. Some people will say that there is no need to become a Buddhist. Or do not have to come to worship Buddhism This idea is only half right. because of the practice on the Dharma path or middle way It is very important to respect the Three Jewels, namely the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. But when you attain the Dharma Your mind will know that You don't have to cling to everything in the life cycle, as if we were rowing a boat across another coast. When you reach the shore, you don't need to carry a boat with you.

Thank you for the amazing video! Some of my thoughts:
The 1st noble truth can be described as “suffering exists” (rather than life is suffering and the way out is to get rid of life).
The 2nd truth explains the arising of suffering. Through the six senses, different kinds of feelings, perceptions, and volition are born. When under ignorance, wrong views and grasping tangle us, bringing about sufferings.
The forth truth shows us the way, usually summarised as the eightfold path. But we can also understand it this way:
Following the precepts and living a righteous life, we can easily be mindful and aware in each moment. Meditation on the breathing, loving-kindness and impurity calm our body and mind, bringing ease, joy, happiness, for concentration to be possible. This in turn allows reality to reveal itself. Understanding and non-grasping then help liberate our afflictions or knots.
The 3rd truth talks about uprooting ignorance, craving and hatred, that is the extinction and quenching of wrong views and dukkha’s chain, leaving us freedom, solidity, peace, freshness...
This is my alternative way to clarify the teaching. Hope it is useful for our practices.

A lot of people assume he's some kind of god or deity and we should just follow what he said without examining how to apply those teachings.

The meditation that you referred to a "Vipassana meditation" is actually "Samatha meditation". It's often taught as if it is just the intro to Vipassana but it is actually a stand alone and foundational meditation that focuses the mind and detaches it from distraction and fear, putting the mind in the perfect state to then progress to other forms of meditation like Vipassana (insight)meditation, metta (loving kindness) meditation, etc.

The Vipassanā movement, also called (in the United States) the Insight Meditation Movement and American Vipassana movement, refers to a branch of modern Burmese Theravāda Buddhism that promotes "bare insight" (sukha-Vipassana) to attain stream entry and preserve the Buddhist teachings, which gained widespread popularity since the 1950s, and to its western derivatives which have been popularised since the 1970s, giving rise to the more dhyana-oriented mindfulness movement.
The Burmese Vipassana movement has its roots in the 19th century, when Theravada Buddhism came to be influenced by western modernism, and some monks tried to restore the Buddhist practice of meditation. Based on the commentaries, Ledi Sayadaw popularized Vipassana meditation for lay people, teaching samatha and stressing the practice of satipatthana to acquire Vipassana (insight) into the three marks of existence as the main means to attain the beginning of awakening and become a stream-enterer.

Amazing knowledge. Thankyou for sharing this knowledge. I am really grateful to be a subscriber of your channel. Because I am learning alot from you channel. Just keep providing all these life knowledge or divine knowledge to us because we are fully ignorant and we are on the stage of suffering level . Even the word suffering is originated from the word ignorance , it's our perception of seeing ignorance as suffering. We human beings created the word suffering ,which actually it's not suffering it's just ignorance . Let spread peace and happiness. Amen . 🕉️🙏❤️❤️.

The content of this video is excellent. Thank you so much for making clear what is unclear to so many! I'm a bit confused by all the yoga footage though. I guess it's hard to find good stock footage of Buddhist meditators. They aren't easy to film without disturbing the meditation. It could be a bit confusing to many to show Western yoga practitioners, as their path, view and practices are quite different from Buddhism.

The original Kalama Sutta (first quote of the video), we have (in Thanissaro’s translation): “Now, Kalamas, don’t go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, ‘This contemplative is our teacher.’ When you know for yourselves that, ‘These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness’ - then you should enter & remain in them.”

Your video is educative.

I'm sorry, but Buddha never said life is suffering. The first noble truth is "there is suffering"... if you miss that rather important distinction, you will misinterpret everything else.

      @buildyourownhuman Рік тому +2

@gayan madushanka wherever that phrase came from, it was never uttered by Buddha. It does not appear, ever, in any of the Pali.
The translation of dukkha as "suffering" is pretty problematic by itself... add in mistranslating "there is" to "life is" and the entire meaning is changed.
The problem isn't with life AT ALL... the problem is with clinging and identity view... life is perfectly fine... there's no problem with nature...

Vipassana is an ancient form of meditation which was present even in the time before Buddha in india in 5th century BCE. It’s not originated in 19th century in Burma. However in modern times it’s get popular under leadership of SN Goenka.

I want to wish many merits to those who aided this video,I felt very emotional when i heard my beautiful Island. I am Sri Lankan ,my country protected this great teaching but now my country is beyond repair it seems. The colonizers have made sure of that. I live in an area with a heretic( fake monk/Chivaradari) who molests little boy monks and no one can punish him because of the connections, tricks etc he uses.
    Sri Lanka needs immediate reordination!!!
There are so many heretics in Sri Lanka now its just such a shame. A famous monk said only 10% of the total monk population of Sri Lanka are all good monks, the rest are just heretics. My country has gone through a 30 year civil war with the worlds first terrorist organization (LTTE), tsunamis, floods, terror attacks from ISIS and economic and political turmoil. I don't if my country can take it anymore.

As both a Theravada and Mahayana practitioner, I’d also like to clarify that jhana or jhayati mean meditation. It has both the function of stopping (samatha) and looking deeply (vipassana).
When one observes the breathing with pure awareness, it also calms and concentrates his mind. And when one’s mind is calm, it helps him focus and see unclouded. So samatha and vipassana are not something you can practice separately.
Buddha never really divided meditations into two categories. They were just two functions of meditation. It was in the Vissudhimagga where Buddhaghosa categorised meditations that way.
We should also not be caught in the notion that the four jhanas are insightless samatha meditations. Joy and happiness are what settle the mind to cultivate equanimity and mindfulness, for clear vision to be developed. So vipassana and samatha are never two distinct practices.
