I use DeX in my home office 90% of the time. My monitor is a 4k TV using a HDMI hub. When on holiday i just take a hdmi cable & mouse and use the accommodation TV.
Here's hoping Samsung continues to improve DeX over time, as it feels like it has kind of taken a back seat recently. Though it's also important to keep in mind that there's so much they can do, as the other half of the experience will always have to do with apps themselves and how useful they are or how many additional benefits they might offer when used in a desktop environment.
The biggest thing missing with DeX (aside from more third-party application support for full-featured "desktop" applications) is the ability to use it natively on the inner display of the Z Fold series. There's a multi-year thread on Samsung Members with hundreds of users asking for this and Samsung continues to ignore it. I use my Fold like this already with floating windows and a compact folding Bluetooth keyboard w/ integrated trackpad, and I continually get people coming up to me and asking what I'm using and how they can get one. The only issue currently is that floating windows in the standard UI is a relatively poor experience as there's no true taskbar like there is in DeX (you can't minimize active apps to the taskbar in the standard UI like you can in DeX) and you end up with the silly floating window bubble on your screen. The other downside is that you're subject to the archaic 5-active app limit that DeX has since gotten around via Good Lock (which should just be standard DeX functionality at this point, frankly). There's no reason to now allow DeX on the inner display of the Fold, and every reason to do so. If the fear is that it'd undermine Tab sales, well, I have absolutely no intention of buying a Tab anyways - that was literally the point of buying a Fold.
Yes definitely. That inner display would be incredible as a little monitor running dex. Samsung could sell a foldable DeX kit with a foldable keyboard, foldable stand and a mouse

Then you would have a real reason to use one of these, and not go back to a laptop.
Because by doing this and by raising awareness it increases the likelihood of some day being able to only carry one "core" device (your phone) and simply plug in or cast to different devices as needed to access your "desktop". Look up the term "convergence" and you'll see that this is the dream for many people. You don't need to run another OS, either. "I didn't need to bring multiple devices."I mean you kind of did though right? I like these solutions but I don't think they're all that much more convenient in terms of just your portability than having a diminutive laptop or even better a good two in one tablet solution.
Agree, but I've been doing the same, and just carrying the phone and no laptop in business trips just feels nicer. But yeah if I was doing dev work, I need to use a laptop. For some reason I can't connect to my git account.
I take your point, but it's more about only using your phone for everything, and then when you need more space, dock it into a lapdock and use extra space. A small laptop or a 2 in 1 tablet is another device that needs to hold your information. Your phone can hold it all and then become your laptop should you need one.
Been using Dex only a little over a month now. The one issue I have, is getting a good dang headset that supports Android. I never thought it would be that hard, but apparently nobody is really making good quality gaming headsets for Android, which really sucks if you're trying to play video games or do something that requires a microphone.
I'm using Dex right now, full time because my laptop fried. It's saving me so far. The only annoying issue is that if I create a text file, (odt, txt, doc), it opens it as read only mode on any app. Then, it asks to make a copy for edit, but then that copy is open as read only mode too when I try to work with it again. This happens with all the apps: WPS, Collect office, libre office, etc. Is very annoying. Couldn't find a solution yet, please help if someone knows.
DeX is great but I prefer to use a second hand as new Samsung Tab S8 with a Dexnor keyboard case (like the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro): - I can still use my phone freely and as 5G internet access point - the Tab S8 has DeX and doubles as a laptop - I still have a tablet to read and browse the web
I find potential better option to these next dock type solutions is just to get a used Galaxy tab S7 or 8 or something. Those run dex natively or with an external monitor. So I just find it to be a less clunky solution. Although I suppose the benefit of these lap docs is that they have other use cases outside dex. You could use it as a second monitor for a computer on Windows or something or for a steam deck or something. But if those uses aren't important to you, I would probably for the same price I would probably choose a Galaxy tab on the resale market or even brand new sometimes. The Galaxy tab 7 I have now with what I told GB was $461 brand new with Galaxy buds pro thrown in. But I haven't seen Samsung run any similar deals on the newer model. So they discontinued the 512 GB version on a lot of the 11 inch solutions which is frustrating.
I think the option i like about the lapdock is that i don't need another device with different files on it. I can operate it all from my phone. So I forget my lapdock one day or just want a day with a phone, everything is already set up on it, rather than needing two different setups
I gotta know do your rode nth-100 have issues with the locks. I bought mine when they came out and 3 months in they both snapped. Desk use only have you experienced this
Hudson mate, good to see ya! Yeah I'm already on my second pair, Rode sent me a new one under warranty. They have a lifetime warranty. I imagine because a lot of people have had that same issue 😅😅
You ever notice the phone screen lag when connected to dex or after you disconnect it? I found the only way to fix this is unfold the phone and fold it back again.
Ahhh So that's what's going on..? I was wondering the same thing and had the same question but I figured nobody would ask it in the comments because that never happens with me but.. nope! For once somebody had a good question the same one I wanted answered lol. I just figured it was something wrong with my phone. My S24 Ultra get so damn hot every time I charge it.. It's been that way for the whole time I've had it. I even put it in front of a fan while it charges. I'm talking cable not wireless. All of my cords and everything is good also. My phone is neat and tighty so I don't understand? And I don't see many people talking about it at all.
@bmorg5190 hey for charging I setup a mode to switch on/off fast charging and battery protection. So the majority of time my fold charges slowly and never gets hot, then I only fast charge or charge to 100% only when I need to and that helps keep the phone cooler
The wireless charger sounds good in theory but doesn't make a lot of sense. If you are using Dex with the phone resting on top of the dock, you are probably plugged in, which already charges the phone 🤷♂ One feature that would have been nice (for the laptop dock thing I mean) is a USB-C port that faces *inward* allowing you to rest the phone across the flat area without a u-bended cable sticking out to the side. It would have to be a bit recessed and would compromise on interior component space a bit, but it would be nice just to keep things tidier.
I used dex alot especially during ces. It much more secure because you don't have a laptop with all of your data. I have the same set up that you have . If I have a need then I will rdp into my serves.
I have a uperfect lapdock X and I have some issues with the trackpad... when I swipe from the top edge of the trackpad, it minimizes the app that is on the screen. And the second issue is that I changed the scrolling direction from the dex menu and it still didin't change it in all the apps (still scrolling with 2 fingers up, the page scrolls down 😮). Do you know how to fix this problems?
Can i get netflix working with dex on my laptop? When i play a movie i get black screen and and i can only hear the audio...researched a bit but cant seems to find a solution
This sound more like coping/doing a challenge more than actual use case for the dock/ss dex. In the real world, I think the lapdock is best with multiple devices, for example it could be a monitor/keyboard/mouse for your home sever's pc, a second monitor for your normal pc, and then be a dex dock for ss phone when going out (to remote control back to home pc). If I have all 3 of these, I would absolutely get a lapdock, very convenient.
When you said "desktop-grade" browser, you're talking about Samsung's own browser right? Chrome and other browsers on Android are not desktop-grade I think. Also, is the file manager on Android not an issue with you if you were to use it as your main computer?
does it strain the phone? I got the s24 ultra but i dont want it to lose firepower in 3 years time which is at least how long i will keep the phone. When i say strain i mean simple stuff like screen casting, media consumpation,, net surfing and job related issues like microsoft apps.
Not particularly no, I've never noticed the phone stuttering, especially when using a cable. And this solution can keep the phone topped up with battery as well
Using a surface pro 5 intel i5 8gb ram for photoshop & luminar neo editing. Have a Samsung S24 Ultra if I did my editing with that and this lapdock do you think it would work better and faster than the surface pro.? Thanks
Always love these and while im still watching the video why does no one ever talk about how you can install the dex app ON your laptop? Maybe its kinda like how someone gets a digital notebook to stop from grtting tempted by other apps?
I have a big question would be great if you answer it, and thanks, if you do so I have viewfinity s8 4k 60fps monitor, I have s24 ultra, and generally, I connect my s24 ultra to the monitor though a usbc to c cable that came along with my s8 monitor so recently, on the 20th of this month, I brought a samsung multiport usb c adapter that has an hdmi socket that can support 4k 60fps but when I connect my phone to the monitor through the samsung usb c hub via hdmi cable(the hdmi cable that has come along with the monitor) I am not getting a smooth experience, I am getting a very laggy experience, maybe 4k 30fps and I am also seeing a lot of visible lag in my s24 ui, home screen, notification panel lag but this not happening when I am connecting my s24 to the monitor with just the usb c to c cable that supports audio, video and charging as well I am here now thinking, is there a problem with samsung usb c hub 4k 60fps hdmi socket or is there a problem with my hdmi cable, and I think obvisouly there should be no problem with the hdmi cable since the cable came along with the monitor and supports hdmi 2.0 standards and it is the first time I am using this hdmi cable ever since I brought the monitor few months before I guess there is a problem with samsung usb c 4k 60 fps hdmi socket and now the question is is it possible to achieve 4k 60fps output through a usb c hub via hdmi cable between the phone and the monitor
@mattscomp there is only 1 tablet with dex, but just to let you know, don't make dex a purpose because it's just an interface, not a laptop replacement, or even watered down. You will end up disappointing yourself if you overhype dex.
@mattscomp don't buy it for the purpose of dex because dex is just an interface it's not a laptop replacement or watered-down version and doesn't really add any productivity on dex alone. It's not what some tech reviewers seem to hype about. On the other hand, I'd obviously recommend the best of the best if you have the money. As of now, I'd say wait for the tab. The s10 series will have 7 years of support, and if you're on the budget, get the tab s8 instead of the tab s9 fe it's basically a larger galaxy a54 and I felt like they could've given us much better specs in favor of ip68 the decision was weird they gave it ip68 on a mid range tablet which isn't a necessary feature especially on a tab, they should've gave it better specs instead of ip68 they shouldn't have putted any money on ip68 especially on a budget tablet when your making sacrifices you should first try to remove luxury feature that aren't important to average user or long term and ip rating is one of them.
Good insights, if Google got onboard with Desktop mode and pushed it there may end up being better app support. That's the main limitation in some areas. There's some great apps like Solid Explorer (file manager) that has a great interface allowing closer to Windows management and abilities to integrate local, external, network, and cloud all together drag and drop too. Only limit again seems google with android with drag and drop only working on local storage between apps, and no NTFS. Come on Google if Motorola and Samsung can do all this just help em out a bit😂, Apple peeps wow over just getting a single feature of many (phone mirroring) so the opportunity is there. I use Motorola Smart Connect which is similar, may have some more abilities I think
@@techwithbenefits but can you not get the same benefits with a Chromebook? Plus better browsing and app experiences? And all your data, theoretically, would be in the cloud anyway. Really, you'd just need your phone for a wifi tether (assuming you weren't using free wifi and a VPN). Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of it but it seems superfluous.
@@fall1n1_yt I guess I'm coming at it from a biased viewpoint. I can't think of the last time I used a thumb drive or external hard drive (or even internal memory) to store anything. But yeah, I guess if you have things stored on your phone and you're using it as an external hard drive then it makes sense?
Might as well carry a book 4 pro because your still carrying a lap dock, on galaxy tablet this feature is pratical but not on a smartphone because you still need another device so why even bother.
Because the device that's being carried is a "dumb" device - it's not another OS/file system to manage, transfer, sync etc. You also don't *need* to carry a lapdock if you're going to the office or someplace with a USB-C dock/monitor (most offices these days have USB-C docking hot desks that you can plug a laptop - or a phone - into). In those cases, all you're bringing with is your phone, which you do already. The lapdock is just if you want to get stuff done along the way.
@nickthaskater well if you're already connecting your device to a desktop, you might as well use a desktop rather than connecting your mobile device. It defeats the purpose. On the galaxy tab, this feature is more practical as the screen is large enough to run dex, only they need to remove limitations and make samsung dex more independent. Discounting linux was a mistake, and if they worked on it, it would've eventually become stable, importing C++ software. Ya, not everyone uses it, but it could come in hand for CS people. Imports the desktop version of Office 365 would be smart as most people use Office 365. This feature has a lot of potential, but samsung is kinda ignoring it, and they might abandon dex like they abandoned Linux. The new dex even took the desktop interface away ya I know you can switch back to the old phone, but this showcases you the sign dex might get discontinued. The difference between the galaxy tab ui and dex is very minimal, and with the Taskbar brought to zfold and tablet 2 years ago, eliminates use of dex. The only difference is that you can't minimize apps the same way. Dex can't get you anything new other than making mobile app usage possible in a desktop interface. It's nothing like without dex, productivity can't be done, you can get pretty much same productivity without dex done, one ui is already super advanced. In order to continue to keep dex alive, samsung has to aim to make it a laptop replacement for most user.
@@Shan_Shah you're not "connecting to a desktop," you're connecting to peripherals and replacing the desktop with a phone. The point is having a single "core" device. Getting a Tab, a laptop, etc. is counter to this point. The taskbar on the Tab and Fold is completely different than the taskbar in DeX - you can't minimize active apps to it like you can in DeX. You keep talking about "importing" things into Android. That's not how coding works. The only major thing stopping DeX from being a true PC replacement for some is the availability of third-party applications. The only thing preventing third-party applications from being available on Android is the developers themselves. The developers could code the apps to work natively on Android if they wanted - it's up to the users to convince them that it's worthwhile. There's no need to get Linux involved. Android already does everything it needs to do.
That’s a learning curve I’d rather have a full functional laptop with windows, os and apps, instead of learning something new, run into compatibility issues.
There's nothing to "learn" if you already use an Android phone. Also, a big point here is to get away from Microsoft/Windows and all of the baggage that it comes with these days. It's not like Windows isn't without compatibility issues, too.
Good content overall, but the short music transition at the end of each day is quite loud and annoying. It became frustrating, and you lost me after day three.
I tried this for a few months, it was terrible. The result was I sold my Tab9 Ultra and switched to a MS Surface Pro 11. Now I'm as happy as can be. One of the best devices I ever owned for my use cases (highly mobile laptop / OLED tablet for holidays)
That's a $2,000 solution with the OLED screen. For a lot of people one of the benefits of dex cuz you can take the phone you already own and use it for productivity work. Or you could buy 11-in Galaxy tab for a few hundred bucks. I love a surface pro and I use one although I almost never use it as a tablet on the go. But I find myself using the surface pro at home on my desk and my Galaxy tab when I'm on the go. Gets almost twice the battery life. I suppose the battery life has improved of the version you have assuming you have the new Snapdragon chip although I'm seeing conflicting information about exactly how much benefit it has. I've seen estimates ranging from 5 hours of screen on time to 12 hours of screen on time so I guess I'll never know unless I try it myself. But it's just so damn expensive. When I bought my surface pro 4 years ago or whatever it was like 700 bucks. Those days are gone. Lol
Your're right about the price, but Galaxy Tab9 Ultra was expensive too. The batterylife on the Pro 11 is around 9-10 hrs of normal use I think, wich is enough for me on a workday. But the normal MS Office experience on the move is very important to me. I lost work on the Samsung with Office for Adroid, thats why it is a no go for me. Everbody can have a different use case.

Not sure if this might help, but I edit txt files on my S24 Ultra with Total Commander. Hasn't tested using DeX...
DeX is great but I prefer to use a second hand as new Samsung Tab S8 with a Dexnor keyboard case (like the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro):
- I can still use my phone freely and as 5G internet access point
- the Tab S8 has DeX and doubles as a laptop
- I still have a tablet to read and browse the web
Desk use only have you experienced this
Also as always loved the video, keep up the good work
Hudson mate, good to see ya!
Yeah I'm already on my second pair, Rode sent me a new one under warranty. They have a lifetime warranty. I imagine because a lot of people have had that same issue 😅😅
@@techwithbenefits omg amazing. I’ll contact them. Great headphones. Crap lock.
I am also using DEX using flipbook.
Do you happen to know how to lock the FN key?
You ever notice the phone screen lag when connected to dex or after you disconnect it? I found the only way to fix this is unfold the phone and fold it back again.
Yeah I believe the phone screen goes down in refresh rate. Just to preserve the power for DeX
Man that laptop dock screen wobbles like CRAZY. That would drive me insane
can phone display timer (app timer) and by hdmi display dex on TV same time ? i would like user le phone like timer & pc on 24h/24
The wireless charger sounds good in theory but doesn't make a lot of sense. If you are using Dex with the phone resting on top of the dock, you are probably plugged in, which already charges the phone 🤷♂
One feature that would have been nice (for the laptop dock thing I mean) is a USB-C port that faces *inward* allowing you to rest the phone across the flat area without a u-bended cable sticking out to the side. It would have to be a bit recessed and would compromise on interior component space a bit, but it would be nice just to keep things tidier.
You can do wireless DeX with this dock, meaning you don't need the cable!
@@techwithbenefits isn't it at 30hz though?
youe Peak Design Everyday bag which ine is it? 25L or 35L? Does your laptop fit Good and does it have padding?
I used dex alot especially during ces. It much more secure because you don't have a laptop with all of your data. I have the same set up that you have . If I have a need then I will rdp into my serves.
some spain article said they willl remove dex from one UI 7
is that true?
I have a uperfect lapdock X and I have some issues with the trackpad... when I swipe from the top edge of the trackpad, it minimizes the app that is on the screen.
And the second issue is that I changed the scrolling direction from the dex menu and it still didin't change it in all the apps (still scrolling with 2 fingers up, the page scrolls down 😮). Do you know how to fix this problems?
Is there any performance issue on long ussage or while playing games on dex heating problem
I tried dex on my ss s22+, the only downside being that the thing's running android 💀
Hi, I am unable to see the screen mirroring in notification while I connect samsung dex through HDMI, do I need to change any setting?
I like DeX a lot, but frustrated with the fact i can't invert the scrolling direction of a connected Bluetooth mouse. Track pad...yes. Mouse...no 😢
i love dex but i also love gaming, cant wait till they come together
Geforce now is the way to go 😉
When you said "desktop-grade" browser, you're talking about Samsung's own browser right? Chrome and other browsers on Android are not desktop-grade I think. Also, is the file manager on Android not an issue with you if you were to use it as your main computer?
does it strain the phone? I got the s24 ultra but i dont want it to lose firepower in 3 years time which is at least how long i will keep the phone. When i say strain i mean simple stuff like screen casting, media consumpation,, net surfing and job related issues like microsoft apps.
Not particularly no, I've never noticed the phone stuttering, especially when using a cable. And this solution can keep the phone topped up with battery as well
Samsung studio app in the gallery is actually very good for video editing now.
Using a surface pro 5 intel i5 8gb ram for photoshop & luminar neo editing. Have a Samsung S24 Ultra if I did my editing with that and this lapdock do you think it would work better and faster than the surface pro.? Thanks
It depends on the intensity of your edits. The processor is definitely powerful enough to do it!
Always love these and while im still watching the video why does no one ever talk about how you can install the dex app ON your laptop? Maybe its kinda like how someone gets a digital notebook to stop from grtting tempted by other apps?
what type of lap top are you using?
Galaxy Book 4 Ultra
I have a big question
would be great if you answer it, and thanks, if you do so
I have viewfinity s8 4k 60fps monitor, I have s24 ultra, and generally, I connect my s24 ultra to the monitor though a usbc to c cable that came along with my s8 monitor
so recently, on the 20th of this month, I brought a samsung multiport usb c adapter that has an hdmi socket that can support 4k 60fps
but when I connect my phone to the monitor through the samsung usb c hub via hdmi cable(the hdmi cable that has come along with the monitor) I am not getting a smooth experience, I am getting a very laggy experience, maybe 4k 30fps and I am also seeing a lot of visible lag in my s24 ui, home screen, notification panel lag but this not happening when I am connecting my s24 to the monitor with just the usb c to c cable that supports audio, video and charging as well
I am here now thinking, is there a problem with samsung usb c hub 4k 60fps hdmi socket or is there a problem with my hdmi cable, and I think obvisouly there should be no problem with the hdmi cable since the cable came along with the monitor and supports hdmi 2.0 standards and it is the first time I am using this hdmi cable ever since I brought the monitor few months before
I guess there is a problem with samsung usb c 4k 60 fps hdmi socket
and now the question is
is it possible to achieve 4k 60fps output through a usb c hub via hdmi cable between the phone and the monitor
DeX is great. 👍

Steve Jobs is using Samsung?!
The galaxy tab is the solution for dex. It's much better. With lapdock, you don't get stylus support, and the galaxy tab is lighter than a lap dock.
The difference is that you still need to carry a phone and then you're managing two "core" devices vs. just managing the phone.
Which Galaxy Tab would you recommend? Especially if you planned on using for Dex of course.
@@Shan_Shah lol
Not optimized for ms office apps though. Printer support is poor too
Good insights, if Google got onboard with Desktop mode and pushed it there may end up being better app support.
Turn it off and put on Dex baby ❤️❤️
You keep saying you only had 'one device' but you don't. You have two. How is this different from having a laptop and a phone?
Price + all your content is on your phone and not split across a laptop AND your phone
Why would all the data be on the cloud? 🤨@@tragiclantern
@@fall1n1_yt I guess I'm coming at it from a biased viewpoint. I can't think of the last time I used a thumb drive or external hard drive (or even internal memory) to store anything. But yeah, I guess if you have things stored on your phone and you're using it as an external hard drive then it makes sense?
lower the volume of the music between cuts I don't have to lower the voice each time u stop talking and raise it back up when u start again
Steve Jobs lives!
@nickthaskater either you buy a lapdock or connect to a desktop monitor. It's not even close to replacing desktop with a phone.
@@Shan_Shah I really don't get the impression you have the slightest idea of what you're talking about. Good luck!

That’s a learning curve I’d rather have a full functional laptop with windows, os and apps, instead of learning something new, run into compatibility issues.
alot of people buy a laptop just to use a browser dex is perfect for that.
Now You need only Huawei triple phone.

SamMobile isn't my channel, I produce content for them and this is my channel
I still would rather have a Chrombook. It is over two years now without windows. I wish Samsung would release a top end Chromebook.
they did! was 4k oled too
I tried this for a few months, it was terrible. The result was I sold my Tab9 Ultra and switched to a MS Surface Pro 11. Now I'm as happy as can be. One of the best devices I ever owned for my use cases (highly mobile laptop / OLED tablet for holidays)
Why is it when people like you comment, I never believe a word you write!
@@tronalddump404Tried my hardest to keep my Surface Pro exactly for the full pc experience (especially with MS office). But the tablet experience just isn't anywhere close to the Tab or iPad.
